Burundi: Controversial press law passed

  • il y a 11 ans
Al Qarra - Months of struggle to prevent the passage of a controversial new press law have finally failed. Reporters Without Borders said the law, which was endorsed by parliament and the senate before President Pierre Nkurunziza signed it, set the east African country back 20 years.

The law restricts journalists' ability to protect their sources; gives the National Communication Council the right to grant or withdraw press cards; and prohibits the dissemination of sensitive information.
This text has provoked strong reactions in the African countries of the East and the international community. The government is defending the law by saying it will protect Burundian leaders and citizens.
