Police Slash Tires in Kabul to Prevent Theft

In the city of Kabul, Afghanistan, people who park on the street might get their tires slashed, but they can’t report it to the police, because they are the ones going around the city vandalizing cars to prevent vehicle theft.

Although there aren’t a large number of cars being stolen in Kabul, authorities are worried that militant radicals could steal a car, and use it as a car bomb.
Nesar Ahmad Abdulrahimzai, the police chief for Kabul's 10th district is quoted as saying: “The police puncture tires as precautionary measures. The police are poorly equipped and we simply have no other option to prevent car theft.”
It is an expensive measure for citizens who have to fix the problem themselves without any reimbursement from the city, or the police department.
The practice is also illegal, but the police say that they go door to door warning people that their tires will be flattened if they park on the street.
Car repair shop owners reportedly don’t mind the new policy because they are seeing more business from people who need new tires.
