The incident unfolded on November 25th and thus far, investigators have not been able to identify the two suspects involved.
The couple had been loading Christmas presents into the back of their vehicle. One of the men approached the pair and asked for directions, effectively distracting them.
While the victims’ attention was on the suspect, his accomplice waited impatiently in the background and edged closer to the couple’s belongings, specifically the elderly woman’s handbag.
The second man only grabbed the purse when pair's backs were turned. He removed the bag and rifled through it right in the street before swiping the woman’s wallet and tossing her pocketbook back in the vehicle.
Both suspects then walked away in the same direction. According to police, the thieves deliberately targeted the couple. The men reportedly followed the couple around the bank after witnessing them withdraw the equivalent of around one thousand dollars and shadowed them as they shopped before carrying out the crime.
Detective Sergeant Dave Faries commented “I will not rest until these despicable thieves are identified and brought to justice.” In the spirit of Christmas, the bank has refunded the victims’ money.
