Ventura County Fire officials recently went above and beyond to rescue a trapped raccoon. A resident in Camarillo, California reported hearing strange noises and firefighters spent days trying to locate the source. They were quite certain it was coming from a crying animal.

Despite being unsuccessful initially, the crew didn't give up and that determination paid off. They found the juvenile raccoon inside a roughly 6-inch wide drain pipe. The animal was about a quarter of a mile down into the pipe by the time rescuers discovered it.

A hole was dug so the pipe could be accessed and then an animal control worker was able to use a pole-like device to reach inside and safely grasp the lively raccoon. Shortly before noon on Thursday, the rescue efforts were over and the animal was placed into a crate.
