Officials in London, New York, and San Francisco are reporting dramatic declines in smartphone thefts, due mainly to “kill switches,” increasingly available technologies that enables phones to be remotely disabled.

Authorities in three major cities are reporting dramatic declines in smartphone thefts, due in large part to device “kill switches” which allow owners to remotely disable their stolen phones.

Apple introduced its Activation Lock kill switch in September 2013. From January 2013 to December 2014, the number of stolen iPhones reportedly dropped by 40 percent in San Francisco and 25 percent in New York, while in London, smartphone thefts decreased by 40 percent in the twelve months following Apple’s introduction.

These three cities spearheaded the Secure Our Smartphones campaign in 2013, petitioning smartphone manufacturers to implement the phone disabling technology.
