Mexico – Protests in 8 Cities over Murder of Photojournalist

Mexico’s Chief Prosecutor Rodolfo Ríos Garza has confirmed that Mexican photojournalist Ruben Espinoza and four women were tortured and killed with a shot to the head from a 9 mm pistol. Protesters in 8 cities have disputed Rios Garza’s claim that Espinoza came to Mexico City looking for work, since Espinosa had made it clear that he left Veracruz because of death threats received in relation to his journalism. Fellow journalists and rights activists also rejected the theory that robbery was the motive for his death. Nadie Vera, one of the women tortured and killed, was a political activist who had been previously arrested and threatened. The State is to blame, say protesters.
