Castle Restoration Project In Spain Called ‘Heritage Massacre’

Locals and conservationists are publicly criticizing the restoration work being done on the 9th century castle El Castillo de Matrera in Spain; some have been quoted as saying it is a ‘heritage massacre.’

Controversy is swirling around the restoration of a historic castle in Cádiz, Spain.

The Independent is reporting that locals and conservationists are unhappy with the renovations being done on El Castillo de Matrera; some have even called it a “heritage massacre.”

The structure, which dates back to the 9th century and was designated a National Monument in 1949, had deteriorated from severe rains a few years ago.

Architect Carlos Quevedo was put in charge of the restoration project; he told The Guardian that his goals were to shore up unstable elements, bring back the scale and tone of the original building, and “differentiate new additions from the original structure.”
