Glass size can have an impact on the amount of wine people consume, finds new research from the University of Cambridge.
The researchers conducted the experiment at a bar in Cambridge, England. The team found out that consumption increased by 9 percent when the same amount of wine--nearly 6 ounces--was served in bigger stemware, reports The Telegraph.
As a result, the establishment’s bar area sales increased by 14.4 percent, and its dining room revenue grew by just over 8%.
Theresa Marteau, the lead researcher, explains that the difference in behavior could be from “people perceiving the glass to contain less and drinking it faster.”
Sipping from larger containers could also be viewed as more fun, leading to prolonged consumption, notes New Scientist.
These findings corroborate previous research showing that people tend to eat more when food is served with oversized tableware and utensils.
The next step for the team is to expand the trial to include more test locations.
