The Trump Administration is slated to release parts of its tax plan on Wednesday.
Sources who spoke with Politico indicated the proposal is likely to include ideas Democrats can get behind. Among them are plans for infrastructure spending and a childcare tax credit.
Politico notes that in devising a plan for funding the former, the administration has been examining a 2015 “international tax plan” that, “comes from the duo of Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Sen. Rob Portman.”
According to the news outlet, it, “took one-time corporate repatriation money and funneled it into the Highway Trust Fund to fix the nation’s crumbling infrastructure — an idea that has received the support in the past of Ryan and even former President Barack Obama.”
On Tuesday, former Obama economic aide Jason Furman expressed support for a tax agenda that includes spending on infrastructure.
In an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box, he said, “It makes sense to do both together. You have something better than just one good idea. A lot of Democrats like infrastructure spending, and these two have been paired in a number tax bills over the last couple of years."
During a press conference on Monday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was asked about the tax proposal. While he didn't go specifically into what the Trump administration will announce on Wednesday, Mnuchin did note, broadly, "...we’ve been clear on what the President’s objectives are for tax reform: Middle income tax cut -- a priority of the President’s. Simplification -- the average American should be able to do their taxes on a large postcard. Business tax reform -- we need to make business taxes competitive, and we expect, with doing that, we will bring back trillions of dollars from offshore."
