President Trump, in a series of Wednesday tweets, declared a ban on transgender people serving in the military, but the slow rollout of the messages had some, for a time, fearing he was declaring war.
The first tweet read, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow...”
It was roughly nine minutes before Trump tweeted part two of the message, and, according to BuzzFeed News, during that stretch of time the Pentagon feared, “that the president was getting ready to announce strikes on North Korea or some other military action. Many said they were left in suspense…Only after the second tweet did military officials receive the news the president was announcing a personnel change on Twitter.”
His second tweet read, "....Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming....."
Trump continued in another tweet, "....victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you."
While the subsequent tweets did quell the fears of imminent war with a nuclear-armed country, it created a separate flurry of military-related confusion.
The announcement of sudden policy shift left many looking for clarification on a number of details, including how it will affect transgender individuals already serving in the military and the units that depend upon them.
