People perform overhead squats for 2 reasons: (a) It's hard and (b) It looks cool, and most of the times it's both. However, if you find yourself at the bottom of the weighted barbell pondering, 'Why are you doing this exercise really?' It's really a good question and here is the answer to the mystery: 1. Mobility, stability and strength: The overhead squat can help people struggling with inflexible core, hips and ankle, and, in turn, make you a more limber and well-rounded athlete. 2. Extension training: Most people sit hunched forward all day and have problems with their back and spine, the overhead squat can help your body to learn how to extend and be more agile. 3. Shoulder stability training: If you've ever put anything heavy over your head, you might have noticed how wobbly the shoulders feel. Overhead squats train your shoulder to stay solid and injury-free later in life. 4. Core strength training: The overhead squat is an excellent core workout too as the weight in the upper body is much higher making your center of gravity much higher.
