00:00 Hi, this is Pinky. We're here in the heart of Hollywood. We are actually showing you
00:06 guys today how to do a red carpet look with Dreamcatchers hair. So thank you American
00:11 Salon for having our live video today. We just really wanted to have fun and spruce
00:17 up this look and so what we did when we first started is I actually put an installation
00:22 of Dreamcatchers in. I did a V for volume, so it's just one row, two bundles, just to
00:28 add a little bit of color and a little bit of length. So I'm going to pull up her hair
00:31 here and show you guys where she's naturally at. So she's naturally just like this, so
00:37 with just the one row, look at the amount of length that we can actually give her with
00:41 a little bit of the volume. So this is really going to help me build my color palette as
00:46 well as give me a little bit extra fullness to create a really soft, nice red carpet look.
00:51 So what I'm going to do first is I actually used a curling wand. I did a soft Hollywood
00:58 wave on the hair and then I clipped up her sections and I put little pin curl clips up
01:04 here just to let it set. So the first thing I'm actually going to do is I'm going to take
01:09 all of this hair here. This is our lovely model Jasmine. Hi Jasmine! So I'm going to
01:18 have you hold this for me real quick. I'm going to take a rubber band and my comb here
01:30 and I'm going to take all this hair and I'm just going to actually just put it into a
01:33 ponytail. I always say the hardest thing to ever do in an updo is always just put a ponytail
01:44 on, right? The basic little things. So I'm going to actually make this a little bit of
01:49 a loose ponytail. And those of you guys that are actually from the 90s or the 80s, you
01:55 totally remember this technique, okay? We're going to do a topsy tail. I'm going to open
02:01 up this, I'm going to take this ponytail and I'm going to slide it right in. By doing that,
02:08 see, this is actually going to create those sections just to be a little bit looser. So
02:12 I can take each side and I can start pulling it through. Now Jasmine's never worn Dreamcatchers
02:19 before and the one thing I asked her is when I was finished is, "How do you feel with these
02:23 extensions in?" "I feel good!" Right? She feels amazing. Now she's ready for a full head.
02:28 This is how we're going to start getting our clients in all the time, right? So I always
02:33 say think outside the box. Just because somebody's coming in just for an updo or just for a basic
02:37 style, this is how you're going to create the client to start coming to you every four
02:41 to six weeks. Make sure you guys add in some color and a little bit of volume. Like I said,
02:46 one row is pretty easy to talk people in. Keep the volume. Yeah, keep the volume. The
02:52 nice thing is too, is like, say she was a bride or even a bridesmaid going on a red
02:56 carpet or whatever the situation is, I always say by putting just one row of Dreamcatchers
03:02 in, you will literally change your client's life one hair strand at a time and keep them
03:06 coming back every four to six weeks. So I'm just going to lightly spray in here.
03:11 Using Mitch Stone hairspray. Yes, Mitch Stone is one of our amazing sponsors. We absolutely
03:18 love him. He does a lot with, here in Hollywood, with studio work, red carpets. He does a lot
03:25 with the Oscars and the Grammys and things like that. So we stay pretty active over here.
03:30 Okay, now right here where I put that V for volume, this is where I'm going to start teasing
03:34 the hair. So what I like to do is use like the big side of the comb and then the little
03:39 side of the comb. This is my special teasing comb, but you can use a regular one. So we're
03:43 going to do big teeth, small teeth. I'm going to pack that hair right at the root. So then
03:48 this is going to give me volume. Now when I get these little loops right here, I'm going
03:52 to take the end of my rat tail and I'm going to start smoothing this out. And then I'm
04:00 going to take this hair, twist it right in here. And right where I put that top detail,
04:05 I'm going to actually take that and push it right in. Now I can spread this from side
04:11 to side. So it's still keeping the volume in there and making it still soft and loose.
04:16 This is definitely the style nowadays. Nobody really likes those tight bun up do's anymore.
04:21 Everybody wants that loose, soft wave, but they want to keep the length. So this is a
04:26 good way to actually get volume, fullness, and keep length. Now I'm going to go to my
04:32 next section. Same thing right in here. We're going to just speed this right at the root.
04:38 So Miss Jasmine is actually going to a red carpet premiere today. So that is why we're
04:44 making her look so fabulous. Are you excited? Super excited! Do we have any questions out
04:52 there? Just a lot of love so far. Alright. Lots of love. If you guys have any questions,
04:59 just go ahead and feel free to ask. That's what we're here for. So now I'm going to take
05:05 this section and I'm just going to kind of smooth it over to one side. And when I do
05:11 a lot of up do's, I tend to not pin everything into place with a bobby pin. I'm actually
05:16 going to use a hair pin. So I'm going to take this hair pin and I'm just going to smooth
05:20 it over and I'm going to take this section and put it to the left. And take the end of
05:26 this. Pull up that volume. Now I'm going to go in through and do my next section here.
05:38 So usually the last thing in an up do that I like to do is actually the framing around
05:43 the face. Because we always have those clients, right, that are like, "Can you move this
05:48 section over? This thing is a little too tight." So the nice thing about actually starting
05:54 from the back and moving forward is if they want to change this or move this in any which
05:58 way, I have the ability to do that. If I started in the front and I tied everything in, the
06:02 problem is if she wants me to move her part, I'm not going to have the ability to do that.
06:06 So I always say leave the front for last whenever you're doing up styling.
06:10 Angela Marie wants to know what colors are you using on her?
06:14 We use the 13 Dreamcatcher color as well as one of our OM14 with the ombre in it. So we
06:27 just mix those two colors together. So we only did two bundles. For those of you guys
06:33 that do use Dreamcatchers and don't know, we do have a whole lot of new colors to offer.
06:39 We actually have 47 different colors now. So we have all of our new ombres in. So it
06:45 really helps break up a lot of the color, especially because a lot of people are doing
06:50 a lot of the ombre look. It just helps blend it all together.
06:55 Sarah Klein asked, "Are these eye tips or tape-ins?"
06:58 Eye tip.
07:00 We use two bundles of eye tips for this look. And Nicole Moy wants to know where we are located.
07:06 We are located in California. Our office is in Costa Mesa. And the salon we're at right
07:13 now, we're actually in Hollywood. So we're pretty much right here on the boulevard where
07:18 all the magic happens.
07:20 Okay. Now these two sections right here in the front, I'm going to take this. I'm going
07:25 to smooth this through with my comb. I'm going to twist this in. And I'm actually going to
07:32 go over that section. And I'm going to wrap that in. Same thing. I'm going to get a hairpin.
07:40 And I'm just going to pin it in like that. Like I said, I don't really pin everything
07:46 in tight until I have it where I want it. Because if I want these sides to be a little
07:50 bit looser, I can start pulling on them.
07:54 Now I'm going to do the same thing on the next section.
08:03 So here in Hollywood, I do a lot of up-styling. And I can't tell you how actually Dreamcatchers
08:08 has literally changed my life and my client's life. Because like I said, a lot of them just
08:13 come in here and they think that they're just going to meet me once and never see me again.
08:17 But really in reality, see now you have become hair-addictive.
08:25 Because to me, a lot of people come in with solid colors. And whenever you're doing an
08:31 up-style, the problem is that if all of her hair was one dark solid color, I'm not going
08:35 to see any of this detail at all. So I can actually just add, like I said, that V for
08:41 volume, add a little bit of color, it's going to add a little bit of texture, and it's going
08:45 to really help break up that contrast.
08:48 Now right in here where I put these pin curls, I'm going to let these go.
08:53 Oh, she says, "I can barely hear you guys. It sounds muffled." Let's try to turn the
08:58 volume up.
09:00 Sorry, it's probably me. I've been hair show after hair show on the microphone, so I am
09:06 losing my voice a little bit. I'll try to speak up a bit.
09:10 Okay, we're going to let that section go.
09:13 Ruby Vietoro says, "So pretty. What length is that eye tip?" Or, it is an eye tip.
09:19 It's 20 inches, and all the Dreamcatcher hair does come in 20 inches or longer. We do not
09:25 make shorter.
09:29 Hopefully that volume change turned it up for you guys.
09:32 Definitely did. Because like I said, naturally her hair is only about to her shoulders, so
09:37 how am I going to create this beautiful look without having that little bit of extra length?
09:41 Like I said, you can do that with just two bundles. Now, say the client doesn't want
09:45 to keep the hair in. That's okay. With Dreamcatcher, everything is no heat, no glue, all 100% reusable.
09:51 So all you're going to actually do is that you can just take those cylinders, wrap them
09:55 up, and you can actually reuse it, take it out. It's up to you. But like I said, most
10:01 of the time, the client becomes addicted to the hair, and they end up wanting to keep
10:05 it or get more bundles at the end of the day.
10:07 Angela Marie said much better. We turned that volume up for you guys.
10:11 Yeah. Okay, so I'm going to pin that right here.
10:14 We do hair here, not electronics.
10:17 Exactly. I don't make the rules. I just do the hair.
10:22 What color cylinders did you use with her darker roots?
10:26 I used dark brown.
10:28 Dark brown cylinders.
10:30 So I always say you want to pick the cylinder to match the client's base, whatever the darkest
10:34 color is at the base. So even if she was blonde, per se, and she has a darker root, I would
10:39 still go down with a darker cylinder because when her roots start to grow out, that's what's
10:43 going to help make it blend. A lot of times when I do certain platinum blondes and things
10:48 like that, everybody thinks automatically go to a blonde cylinder. That's not the case.
10:52 But that's why with Dreamcatcher is we actually have a certification class. We teach you guys
10:56 everything that you guys need to know about hair extension. So if you're not certified
11:00 with us, please do become certified because the class is absolutely amazing. Even if you
11:06 do hair extensions already, I mean, you're going to learn so much just from the way of
11:11 our technique and because our company has been around for so long, a lot of us educators
11:16 have really put pride into helping out the stylists and making them understand what colors
11:22 they need and why.
11:24 Now with the end here, I'm actually going to take this. I'm just going to tuck that
11:28 end right in there. Bring this piece over with a hairpin. I'm going to take this and
11:43 I'm going to connect these two pieces together. I was going to pull this up and out of her
11:54 face, but I kind of like this. Do you guys agree having a little bit of hair around the
11:58 face is nice?
12:00 Yep.
12:01 I'm working with the Midstone hairspray. I really like it because it is a session spray,
12:12 so it's really easy to work with.
12:15 I love the smell of it too.
12:17 Yeah, and then you'll smell good all night.
12:22 Another hairpin right in here. So each piece, you can see I'm just kind of loosely wrapping
12:28 each one in so they all kind of fold together, and then I take my fingers and I just start
12:33 dragging that out.
12:36 Now right in here, I need these two pieces to connect. We don't want to pull. So I'm
12:41 going to spray that. I use the end of my hairspray can a lot. It's my new little tool. The other
12:52 trick I have too that I like to do in FDUs is that if you do tend to get a lot of fly
12:57 aways, like especially in here through the top, and you don't want to put too much product,
13:01 I like to use a tint brush with some hairspray. I'm going to saturate that really, really
13:06 wet. This is good just to smooth out flyaways or even do like a sleek back ponytail. I'm
13:13 going to take these flyaways right here, and I'm just going to lightly saturate that with
13:17 the hairspray. Bring this over, and that's going to help hold it in place, shine it,
13:23 and smooth it down all at the same time.
13:29 Now right in here, we're going to take this section over.
13:36 So these are definitely the looks I feel for what's coming up for next year. It's very
13:42 loose, very soft, a lot of braids incorporated with a lot of different colors.
13:52 Okay, I'm going to take this hairpin, connect these two pieces over.
14:04 Okay. Now with all these loose ends here, now I can be creative. I can bring them all
14:10 up if I want to. I can leave it down. That's kind of up to you as the stylist.
14:15 We already have fans over here going through the window.
14:19 They're like, "Wow, you look so fabulous, Laracey."
14:22 I thought she was fake.
14:24 See, even our fans outside, they think that she's a fake person, and she's a mannequin.
14:29 [laughter]
14:34 See, this is what we get every day in the heart of Hollywood, you know?
14:37 You never know who you're going to meet or what you're going to do with your hair.
14:41 Thank you.
14:43 See, you look so beautiful. They thought you were a mannequin.
14:45 [laughter]
14:47 I mean, that's a compliment, and we're not even done yet.
14:52 Okay, now I'm going to take this piece, bring this piece over.
14:57 Make sure I kind of tuck those hairpins in.
15:02 I feel like that's always usually the hardest part is a lot of people don't know where to pin it, you know?
15:06 And I always say, "Don't fight against the hair. Start moving it around."
15:10 Whichever which way that the hair will actually stay, go with it.
15:14 Don't fight against it. I tell my brides that all the time.
15:19 Now, right in here, I'm actually going to take this hair, and I'm going to tie it into a knot.
15:30 And I'm going to take one bobby pin right here on the bottom.
15:41 And usually this is going to secure it all in, and then I can start popping out those hairpins, and everything should just stay.
15:46 Okay, so to add the fullness right here in the bottom, this is how I'm going to do it.
15:49 I'm going to take that one bobby pin, I'm going to pull it all the way across.
15:54 I'm going to hold that with my finger, and I'm going to crisscross that right at the bottom.
16:02 Taking my other large bobby pin and pinching those two together.
16:08 So inside the hair, it's going to look like this.
16:16 This is another reason why I hairpin it, see?
16:18 So now I can go through and I can spread this out, make this a little fuller.
16:24 And then once I get it kind of where I want it, now I can start using my basic bobby pins and pin it down.
16:29 So then it's nice and secure.
16:31 So I'll take that hairpin and put a bobby pin around it, and lock it in.
16:39 Same thing on this side.
16:43 About three more pins and she's finished.
16:45 Sometimes I can do updos so fast that I feel like my clients aren't feeling like they get what they pay for, so I can like start talking to them a little bit.
16:55 But I say these are my few techniques.
16:57 Take them, make them your own, be creative.
16:59 That's what being an artist is all about.
17:03 We're going to take this on this side, pin this down.
17:18 Right in here, I'm going to take these two pieces, pin this in.
17:21 >> Can you pull the hair a little tighter if need be with allowing the client's head not to be bothered or having too much tension on the hair itself?
17:29 >> Absolutely.
17:30 Definitely.
17:31 If I wanted to pull this just a little bit tighter, instead of doing like I said with the topsy tails to begin with, instead of doing that, I would just put them in basic ponytails.
17:40 So then that way it just comes a little bit more together and then I can take those ends and then move them around.
17:49 So that way I can make sure that everything's nice and even.
17:51 I have one curl here that wants to fall.
17:54 We're going to pin that and we're going to just do a final spray and then she's ready to go.
18:01 No problem.
18:05 So we have any more questions before I send her on her red carpet?
18:15 >> Party.
18:16 >> Beautiful.
18:17 Okay.
18:18 The other thing too I always like to do is check in the mirror.
18:20 So I check for the balance on each side.
18:23 So if I can see from one side, I need to be able to see from the other.
18:28 So I feel like this isn't pinned tight enough because I can see it through the mirror.
18:32 So what I'm going to do is I'm just going to go through and I'm just going to facet that down just a little bit more.
18:47 So this look is supposed to be just a little bit messy.
18:51 But once I'm done, now I'm going to go through and like I said, take those hair pins out.
18:58 Like I said, this messy, loose look is definitely the look for 2018.
19:05 People really, like I was saying in the beginning, don't really want things that are so done.
19:10 They almost want it to look more messy.
19:14 >> Sabrina Parrish says, "I love the messy look.
19:16 How would you make sure it doesn't move through the night?"
19:19 Sorry, just tuning in.
19:20 No problem, Sabrina.
19:22 >> So this is how I'm going to do it.
19:24 So kind of zoom in real quick.
19:26 See where these hair pins are that are a little bit loose?
19:29 When I take that, I'm actually going to take another bobby pin and crisscross it in.
19:33 And that's going to help lock that down.
19:40 So sometimes I'll actually do this very clean or very messy, but the pinning is pretty much the same.
19:48 Making sure I'm balanced on each side.
19:55 Bring that in.
20:00 All righty.
20:02 Now right here I just want a little bit of extra volume just to kind of have that little bit of wave in here.
20:08 >> Chantel Boutreau says, "I love updos.
20:10 I totally miss everything."
20:11 That's okay, Chantel.
20:12 You can tune in later.
20:14 This is going to be up still so you can rewatch the whole thing.
20:18 Taylor Boren says, "Do you use any particular bobby pin brand?"
20:23 That's always a challenge.
20:26 Sometimes I use the bobby pins from Salon Centric, and then sometimes I get them from Walmart.
20:33 It just depends on the day.
20:36 I feel like any type of bobby pin, some of them are really good and some of them tend to twist.
20:42 So it's not really particular to the brand, I feel.
20:45 It's like bobby pins are always a war.
20:47 It's either going to work or it's not.
20:49 Zoe Hughes says, "Olaf pins are secure and it will stay in all night.
20:52 X, X, kisses."
20:54 Zoe.
20:55 >> Good tip.
20:56 I will try that.
20:57 Now see right in here where she has some flyaways, we're going to do that little trick again.
21:03 Tint brush and some hairspray.
21:05 >> Chantel says, "What did you prep the hair with?"
21:09 >> I actually used a curling wand, and I just did a loose beach wave.
21:13 It took me about five minutes to curl the whole thing.
21:18 And I'm going to take this and I'm going to saturate all of this with hairspray
21:25 and start getting all of these little flyaways down,
21:31 making sure everything is nice and balanced.
21:40 Little flyaways here.
21:42 And then the same thing with the ones around our neck.
21:46 It's amazing what a little bit of hairspray and a tint brush will do, right?
21:50 I feel like I used to fight with those little pieces all the time.
21:53 >> No problem, Chantel.
21:54 She says, "Thank you."
21:55 And Ashley says, "Did you happen to tease the hair for the volume on top?"
22:00 >> Just a tad.
22:01 But remember I put that V for volume with the Dreamcatcher extensions in.
22:05 So that's really what helped lift up the rest of the volume,
22:08 so I didn't really need to tease it too much.
22:13 >> Chantel says, "Is that a tiny brush that she uses?"
22:16 Yes, this is a--
22:18 >> It's a tint brush.
22:19 >> Tint brush.
22:20 >> The same thing you're going to use hair color with.
22:22 Sometimes I use small ones, sometimes I use big ones.
22:24 It just depends on what I'm trying to do.
22:26 >> Sabrina says, "How long would it normally take you to do an updo like this?
22:29 I feel like it takes me forever."
22:31 >> Like five minutes.
22:33 >> Girl, practice makes perfect.
22:34 Some people it takes 20, some five.
22:37 >> And we always say, too, if you guys ever have any questions about updos
22:40 or even just extensions in general, please go on to our Dreamcatcher's Instagram.
22:46 Go there, message us, ask us questions.
22:49 There's always going to be a hairstylist that's going to be looking at it,
22:52 and we can always answer your guys' questions.
22:54 So if you guys are in a salon, you guys get a little stuck or something like that,
22:57 please feel free to come and ask us.
22:59 >> Kayleen says, "Do you like to use dry shampoo to add texture
23:02 if the hair's been freshly washed?"
23:04 >> Sometimes.
23:06 To be honest, I feel like the least amount of product the better,
23:09 and I prefer the hair not to be too dirty because sometimes when it is a little greasy,
23:13 it will tend to separate and it will tend to fall.
23:16 >> Okay.
23:17 >> So let's go ahead and have you stand up here.
23:21 We're ready.
23:23 >> We are red carpet ready.
23:26 Our beautiful model, Jasmine.
23:31 She's going to do a spin for us.
23:37 >> See, in just a matter of minutes, you're going to go, you know,
23:41 just walking around with plain old hair.
23:43 >> She's a glam.
23:44 >> Glamorous, Hollywood glam.
23:46 >> She is red carpet ready.
23:48 Thank you, everyone, for tuning in.
23:52 >> And now we're going to take her to her premiere.
23:54 So maybe we might go live, but just make sure you guys check out our photos for the after looks.
24:01 >> All right.
