00:00 Citizens of the Reject Nation, we are coming at you today with Batman the Long Halloween Part 1.
00:06 Neither of us have seen it, as is tradition.
00:08 True.
00:09 Have read it. Have you read it?
00:10 I have read it. It's been a while. In fact, I think this would have been
00:13 an opening day of the Dark Knight. It waited 12 plus hours in line with the paperback.
00:18 It is a damn fine novel. I'm very excited to dive into the animated to see how it adapts itself.
00:24 Please do like, comment, subscribe, hit that notification bell so you can see
00:28 when Part 2 pops up, as well as the rest of our DCAU journey.
00:32 Speaking of Batman, the Batverse shirt is available from ShopZero.
00:36 Edition.com.
00:37 And we are also going to be at Comic-Con. And if we see you wearing this shirt,
00:42 we're going to give you a nice crisp high five.
00:44 Hoo!
00:44 Going to be very Adam West-y, because it's going to be more loving than violent,
00:48 but we can promise you some dancing. We're going to be there on Saturday,
00:52 early afternoon. We got tons of details to come very, very soon by the time you see this video.
00:57 But know that if you're there Saturday, early afternoon, The Real Rejects will also be there.
01:01 Marvel ran away from us, so you got time. You're not going to be standing in the Hall H line,
01:04 you're going to be standing in our line. So we'll see you there at Comic-Con, you lovelies.
01:08 And speaking of excellent vigilantes, I would like to thank all of the patrons
01:13 for joining us as ever. If you want to watch this front to back, start to finish,
01:16 you want some resting faces, then you become a patron and you can be super sexy like the
01:21 rest of them as we watch this in its entirety. Without further ado, let's get Halloween-y.
01:26 [Music]
01:33 Ooh, I like it already. That's a cool animatic. Very Batman series. There we go. There's the
01:40 ticket. Maybe it was just a silent intro. It's just luring you in with all the-
01:43 Pulling me deeper. Oh, that's gorgeous.
01:45 Look at that establishing shot. Oh, wow. That may be my favorite
01:48 establishing shot to date. That was stunning. Gotham City, it bleeds.
01:54 I only came here out of respect for my parents who knew your family.
01:58 That is definitely a Jensen Ackles. Thomas Wayne believed in my father.
02:03 He believed a man could bring order to a world of chaos.
02:06 He also celebrated Halloween. And you, Bruce?
02:09 Every year. They're doing a good job of the Jeff Loeb writing, but also the Tim Sale art,
02:13 but not as directly as the Frank Miller. It's like shades of it.
02:16 Tim Sale passed away last year and one of the most formative Batman artists,
02:21 one of the most formative comic artists of all time.
02:22 Rest in peace. What a titan.
02:24 Those scallops though.
02:32 Oh, there it is.
02:38 Already I can just feel like the pace, the tone feels different.
02:42 Seems like this will have a lot more breathing room.
02:46 I love the art style, the watercolor blend. There's my Tim Sale art.
02:52 Yeah. Oh, this is taking me back. This book has beautiful art.
02:57 It really does.
02:57 Oh, rest in peace.
03:01 And like we saw the Frank Miller, that was like a direct adaptation.
03:06 This is more like shades of, I don't know if the Tim Sale style would
03:09 translate to movement as linear. Cause like this just so striking in its pauses.
03:14 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's like, it's made to be still. So you gotta adapt the style a little bit.
03:20 Cause I remember the like splash pages in this where you like turn the page and you just stop.
03:23 Whoa.
03:27 Come a long way from Red Hood, boy.
03:40 This is incredible.
03:41 Love this music too.
03:42 You're the only person who probably feels a little cooler than Batman.
03:47 Right. The only person I could even comprehend what it's like to feel as cool.
03:49 As Batman.
03:50 That was sick.
03:50 Love it. Love it. Love it.
03:52 Oh, that's right.
03:58 Nicely done.
04:08 Now with the nipple silencer.
04:10 A Miss Kyle telephoned.
04:12 She said she was checking the number you gave her to make sure it's real.
04:15 It's an absurd holiday.
04:18 Oh yes. Putting on costumes and striking fear.
04:21 Quite absurd.
04:23 And collecting candy.
04:25 Do you really think?
04:26 That's how it feels, Bruce.
04:28 Who does that?
04:29 Yeah. Bruce just stole Alfred's bit.
04:32 I mean, many of them. MI6 training.
04:35 They're excited, Jim.
04:39 Big night.
04:41 Cop, ghost, the specter.
04:42 Easter egg.
04:47 When? I'm on my way.
04:48 Your father's captain now.
04:50 The whole department's counting on him.
04:51 Well, I was counting on him too.
04:53 Gilda, there you are.
04:58 Harvey, you're home.
05:00 Better late than never.
05:01 Most built DA.
05:03 Do you have any kids? Trick or treaters.
05:05 I don't think I'm really up for all that tonight.
05:08 Yeah, I saw the bull on the porch.
05:10 It's okay. It's a ghost town out there.
05:11 There were a lot of kids out front just now.
05:13 I think he's helping her feel better, but it's also lying to her.
05:16 I'm dedicated to Halloween over anyone's feelings, Coy.
05:20 You sit on that porch.
05:21 Let's just crawl into bed and watch an old black and white movie.
05:25 Baby, I'm so sorry.
05:26 Oh.
05:29 You have to go.
05:31 Pick a movie. I'll be back soon. I love you.
05:34 I love that it actually feels like a Halloween movie.
05:39 Like there's a spooky, ethereal-
05:41 Just kind of pervades the whole sort of ambiance.
05:44 Yeah, it feels like I want to watch this on Halloween with the lights off.
05:47 Yeah.
05:48 Maybe it'll be part of the new every annual rotation.
05:51 Yeah.
05:51 Gentlemen.
05:52 Oh.
05:54 This is District Attorney Harvey-
05:57 Bats.
05:58 Dent.
05:58 Okay.
06:00 Johnny Vitti was murdered tonight.
06:04 It's Carmine Falcone, not the Robin.
06:06 Harvey, calm down.
06:07 Where were your men, Jim?
06:08 Hard to tell if we're dealing with a professional.
06:11 Of course it was a professional.
06:12 This was Falcone.
06:14 He found out Vitti was going to betray the family, so he took him off the board.
06:18 Very used to the art in the photos.
06:19 He was ready to sing.
06:22 Not just about Carmine, the whole family was going away.
06:25 We had a real opportunity to change things.
06:28 A complete opera.
06:29 Say it.
06:33 Who did?
06:38 Salvatore Moroni.
06:39 If anyone is responsible for my nephew's death,
06:42 it's that new son of a bitch in the DA's office.
06:45 Sling blade over here.
06:48 Yep.
06:49 Just say the word, Carmine, and I'll do them myself.
06:51 At the right time, we'll hit back.
06:53 The right time is now, Carmine.
06:55 No disrespect, Carmine.
06:57 Ooh, too late.
07:00 It's Godfather.
07:01 He looks like Don Corleone.
07:04 You see how we've drawn him?
07:05 I mean, that was a lot of disrespect.
07:07 Oh, buddy.
07:11 Ooh, damn.
07:12 Guys, the elements and the sound design.
07:21 They capture all this.
07:22 Water colored, deep background.
07:24 Yeah.
07:25 Got you exactly where I want you.
07:29 Fel Cody.
07:29 Wait till you see what's inside.
07:32 Oh, this was a work thing.
07:34 I thought we were flirting.
07:35 The only thing that doesn't work is the music.
07:37 I thought we were flirting.
07:38 The only thing that doesn't work at Jensen Ackles is Batman.
07:41 Both of his voices sound too cool.
07:42 You'd recognize him.
07:43 That's true.
07:44 He doesn't have the perfect gravel.
07:46 Just Jensen Ackles.
07:47 It's authentic.
07:48 So crisp and clean.
07:51 Actually, it's incredibly dirty.
07:52 Falcone's been having trouble laundering his cash for some time.
07:54 Oh, damn.
08:04 Let him go because he's with me.
08:05 Also, because he's the DA who put all your friends into Arkham.
08:09 We got room for one more.
08:10 Yeah, of course you do.
08:12 Falcone owns the mayor and the entire city assembly.
08:15 So the only way to make an impact is to make it disappear.
08:18 Moving it could take days.
08:19 Burn it.
08:20 Well, who said anything about moving it?
08:22 Why are you trying to hurt Falcone?
08:28 Why are you?
08:29 It's not personal, sweetheart.
08:30 It's justice.
08:31 It can be personal.
08:34 As we burn it down.
08:37 Okay.
08:37 The cut.
08:44 Oh, no.
08:45 Fantastic.
08:48 Batman shops at magic stores.
09:02 Oh, man.
09:05 Got a huge break tonight on this Falcone thing.
09:09 Once I take him out, we can start a family.
09:11 You know I can't.
09:12 We'll talk about options when you're ready.
09:14 But now are we still having movie night or not?
09:16 Yeah, what'd you pick?
09:17 Take off your Mia Wallace costume.
09:20 Oh, no.
09:25 I knew and I was still shocked.
09:29 I completely forgot.
09:30 Damn.
09:32 Pasted just well enough that I was like, "Oh, look how cute."
09:35 Great Batmobile.
09:40 The turkey is roasting, the pies are cooling, and Miss Kyle is on board.
09:45 Thanksgiving now?
09:46 Alfred, make a note to order a new windshield.
09:50 Bulletproof.
09:51 It wasn't bulletproof to begin with?
09:53 I don't know how that went over.
09:54 The hell you think this is?
09:55 Come on, this is Gotham.
09:56 Oh.
10:00 This is Chinatown.
10:02 Oh.
10:07 I've never seen that.
10:08 Have you ever seen Chinatown?
10:09 Like Jack Nicholson movie?
10:12 I've tried to watch it a few times.
10:14 Okay.
10:14 I quote it, but I've never seen it.
10:15 Yeah.
10:16 This is Chinatown.
10:16 I don't know what that means yet.
10:17 You will someday.
10:19 Someday.
10:20 Oh, dope shot.
10:21 Oh.
10:21 Batman movies need more Chinatowns.
10:28 You thought wrong.
10:38 We buddies were seen outside Harvey Dent's house on Halloween.
10:44 We were trick or treating.
10:46 Show me your candy.
10:50 Having fun?
10:51 Not yet, but any second now.
10:53 Oh.
10:55 Cool.
11:03 Oh, damn.
11:06 Big trouble in little Chinatown.
11:11 Whoa.
11:15 Damn.
11:22 Nicely done.
11:43 Like the martial arts in this.
11:45 Yeah.
11:46 Damn.
11:53 Don't tase me, bro.
11:58 Beast of a dude.
12:01 Hey.
12:03 Whip it good.
12:05 Go.
12:09 I'll keep an eye on your little friends.
12:12 Thank you.
12:13 Would be nice.
12:13 Thank you.
12:15 We can make this easy.
12:18 Mickey, just tell me who hired you to kill Dent.
12:20 Go to hell.
12:21 The only difference between you and me is that I know what's down here.
12:26 There's a killer croc lurking in these sewers.
12:30 Great line.
12:31 Oh, there he is.
12:36 Grundy.
12:38 My man.
12:39 There he is.
12:41 Born on a book.
12:42 This is your place.
12:44 Give him to me and I'll make sure he never sets foot down here again.
12:47 Take him.
12:51 Good.
12:51 Got my cameo for the day.
12:53 There it is.
12:53 You guy.
12:54 Yes.
12:59 Where were you on Halloween?
13:02 You're late.
13:02 Hey, he's getting his turkey on.
13:05 It's fine.
13:06 He's good.
13:06 He's thankful.
13:07 It's more of a holiday, man.
13:08 He gets into the season.
13:09 Oh, this one's not for your husband.
13:11 It's for you from Mr. Falcone.
13:14 I'm sorry, ma'am.
13:17 It's none of my business.
13:18 Isn't it time for his dinner?
13:21 It's not my business.
13:21 What the hell are you doing with gangsters?
13:23 Also, how does she not have a scratch on her?
13:25 She was in that fire.
13:26 I know he's holding the man.
13:27 I don't even know.
13:30 Come on, Falcone.
13:31 The Roman contract.
13:32 Your try had to take out Harvey Dent.
13:35 Your signature is all over it.
13:36 You got to help me keep my friend here.
13:38 Calm.
13:39 Good cop, bad cop, Batman.
13:41 Good cop, bad cop.
13:43 Chairs are for suspects.
13:47 This guy's innocent.
13:49 Oh, geez.
13:50 I want to do that to somebody.
13:53 That was great.
13:54 We have a lot to be thankful for, Alberto.
13:57 Health, family.
13:58 What's left of it.
14:00 If you are referring to your cousin, Johnny,
14:02 that is being handled by Mickey Chen.
14:04 And who do you think hired him?
14:07 [GIGGLING]
14:09 Love the sound effects.
14:10 He does such a good job gaffing us.
14:14 Is there something you wish to say?
14:15 Except to point out that Harvey Dent is still alive.
14:18 Is that Jack Quaid?
14:19 Because I allow it.
14:23 The dangers of independent thought.
14:27 Sounds like Jack.
14:28 Yeah.
14:29 And it sounds like Titus Welliver.
14:31 When have you had one independent thought?
14:34 Maybe when I sent flowers to Dent's hospital room
14:36 in the Falcone name.
14:38 You did what?
14:38 I thought it would take suspicion off of us
14:43 if we looked like we care about his recovery.
14:45 Now I suppose you'll say it was a sloppy move.
14:48 Why did you send them in that name?
14:49 Two for two.
14:52 Excellent work.
14:53 Any notion you may hold about being next in line
14:57 to take over our business interests
14:59 is a pathetic delusion.
15:03 Yeah.
15:03 [LAUGHTER]
15:11 Subtle.
15:12 Nice.
15:13 I'm on my way home for Thanksgiving dinner.
15:15 You should come along.
15:16 Barbara always makes a ton.
15:18 I'm not hungry.
15:18 Flip a coin.
15:21 What are we doing here?
15:23 Maybe I wasn't ready for this yet.
15:24 I think I'm going to go back now.
15:26 Don't you worry about Harvey.
15:27 I'm already worried about Harvey.
15:29 I'm pretty worried.
15:30 [LAUGHTER]
15:34 When a guy acts like that, you hand him a gun?
15:36 Yeah.
15:36 The Falcones are dangerous people.
15:38 And to them, you're the bad guy.
15:40 Protect your family.
15:41 Protect your girl who's clearly been off this whole time.
15:44 [LAUGHTER]
15:50 That nip.
15:50 Aw, Batman.
15:54 Grundy.
15:56 Giving Grundy some turkey.
15:57 Aw.
15:58 A little Thanksgiving for Solomon.
16:00 Shucks, Batman.
16:05 Even Gordon laughed.
16:07 [LAUGHTER]
16:09 Even Gordon laughed.
16:10 [LAUGHTER]
16:19 Oh.
16:20 Right on the gourds.
16:22 Yeah.
16:23 That was a really thick line work on that one close up.
16:27 Meanwhile, at the top of Mount Crumpit, the Grinch continued plotting.
16:32 His heart would not grow three sizes that day.
16:34 [LAUGHTER]
16:35 I should be out hunting.
16:37 We've got it covered.
16:38 All of Gotham PD will be deployed throughout town by midnight.
16:41 Oh.
16:41 When he said hunting, he meant like on Supernatural.
16:45 When holiday comes calling--
16:46 Tetch.
16:47 --we'll be ready.
16:47 You know, this is all you.
16:49 I wanted them in Gotham Penitentiary.
16:51 Oh my god, that is a different looking Jonathan Cranston.
16:53 Very.
16:54 Charlie Day.
16:57 Oh, with his cork board.
16:58 Falling on hard times.
16:59 [LAUGHTER]
17:00 Mapping things out.
17:01 Calendar Man.
17:04 Who killed Johnny Vidi on Halloween?
17:06 Vidi was the Roman's nephew.
17:08 The Roman was Chen's employer.
17:10 First suspect is, therefore, the Roman.
17:13 [LAUGHTER]
17:15 I told you to bring Mr. Dent.
17:16 He isn't safe out there.
17:18 The TA who put you all in Arkham?
17:19 Half the patients here would kill him on sight.
17:21 So I'd say out there is the only place he is safe.
17:26 Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
17:28 Or perhaps he doesn't know you're here.
17:30 Perhaps the district attorney is a suspect.
17:35 [LAUGHTER]
17:37 Love his voice.
17:39 There's lots of crazy out there these days.
17:42 And just when you thought you'd cleaned it all up.
17:45 Oh, what a joke.
17:47 Oh no.
17:49 Why did you make that reference?
17:50 [LAUGHTER]
17:53 Oh, it's too easy.
17:56 It's too easy.
17:56 Identity unknown, yes.
17:59 Whoa.
18:02 [LAUGHTER]
18:08 He had somebody get to my kid.
18:10 If I didn't help him, I'm sorry.
18:12 Oh, buddy.
18:13 Outside it's so awful chill.
18:16 [LAUGHTER]
18:21 This holiday's a killer.
18:24 Jingle bells, Batman smells Robin.
18:26 Such a good rendition.
18:27 Gilda.
18:29 She looks like a Gilda.
18:31 Oh, there's that art.
18:33 Looking for this?
18:37 Put the gun down and we'll talk.
18:41 Sure.
18:41 Oh, geez.
18:44 Shot him point blank in the nuts almost.
18:47 [LAUGHTER]
18:51 Bring extra bullets or keep count.
18:53 [GUNFIRE]
18:57 Ow.
18:57 Where did you get that?
19:03 Why?
19:03 You're missing one.
19:05 [LAUGHTER]
19:09 D.A. Dent is more than he appears to be.
19:13 I'll make sure little Gilda doesn't have to crow shop for hubby-wubby ever again.
19:19 You call that a joke?
19:22 But you haven't even heard the punchline.
19:24 It goes like this.
19:26 Ah.
19:26 It's not your best material, Joker.
19:29 It worked for me.
19:30 I'll take a good punchline joke.
19:32 Fine.
19:33 Any idea where he was heading?
19:35 Maroni.
19:36 Manja.
19:37 No.
19:41 That's Snowpack.
19:42 Two.
19:50 What happened to your friend's face, Maroni?
19:53 Nothing. What happened to yours?
19:54 He was inside before we got there.
19:57 Took out the whole staff.
19:59 Poisoned the frisole.
20:00 I wasn't hungry, but uh, Freddy here.
20:02 Not the frisole.
20:04 He put a gun in my face and told me that this is his turf and that he's cracking down on interlopers.
20:09 Freaks used to play way out on the fringe.
20:11 But once you showed up--
20:13 Relax, pal.
20:15 Now we got killer crocs and moths and sewer zombies.
20:20 Yeah.
20:21 A homicidal maniac skulking around the holidays hitting made men.
20:25 What's the common thread?
20:30 Where is he?
20:31 But if he's the guy killing Falcone's men,
20:33 it's only a matter of time till he gets to old Carmine himself.
20:36 Maybe start there.
20:37 Yeah, just shadow Carmine the whole night.
20:39 Easy.
20:39 Sleep with two eyes open.
20:42 Oh, what?
20:44 My bed gun.
20:45 Hello.
20:49 What the hell?
20:49 With the hat.
20:52 If you're gonna kill me, just do it.
20:54 Is this the face of a killer?
20:58 If you hear any news about the holiday investigation, I'd like you to pass it my way.
21:06 Here's a Macabre.
21:09 Here's a Macabre.
21:11 What the hell?
21:14 Looks like a good time.
21:19 They were just good old boys.
21:21 Kiss him.
21:28 It's the rules.
21:28 You know what I forgot?
21:30 No.
21:33 Dang.
21:35 She's hand cannon.
21:36 God, that is like a giant gun.
21:46 He's such a rascal in this movie.
21:48 Oh.
21:53 Still smoking.
21:58 Oh, the snow globe.
22:02 I love how they're doing these holiday titles.
22:08 Yeah.
22:09 Johnny Beatty was about to flip and Mickey Chin could testify that Falcone ordered dense murder.
22:14 But why kill his own bodyguard?
22:15 May I ask why you're keeping the fifth suspect off the board?
22:19 For the twist.
22:21 I blacked it out myself.
22:22 There it is.
22:31 I really overestimated this.
22:43 Or what the world deserves.
22:49 That's a great shot with the cow in the background.
22:55 Yeah, the suit you're putting on.
22:56 Yeah.
22:57 Oh, great name drops.
23:07 Oh.
23:07 Steal that broach.
23:13 Yeah.
23:13 Oh, no.
23:20 Oh, Christ.
23:23 Oh, dude.
23:24 Jeez.
23:25 No.
23:25 No.
23:27 Oh, dude.
23:28 He's freaking right there.
23:30 I mean, of course.
23:33 But wow.
23:35 Great setup for that speech.
23:36 Dead pilot?
23:37 Check.
23:38 Ground crew?
23:39 Check.
23:40 Poison gas?
23:42 Check.
23:44 Time to ring in the new year.
23:46 Oh.
23:47 Fasten your seatbelts, as I have no idea how to fly this thing.
23:53 Yep.
23:55 I would expect no less.
23:57 I feel like whatever this is, whatever we've tried to be to one another is unraveling.
24:04 We've never spoken of it, but the truth is that you and I are two different people.
24:09 One of us has herpes.
24:10 Now we both.
24:11 I don't think we're ever going to be able to put it all together.
24:14 Come on, the bat and the cat.
24:15 I guess we're just not cut out for whatever this is.
24:19 Oh.
24:20 Does she know?
24:23 How many levels is this conversation taking place?
24:25 When did you do it?
24:26 You took my watch.
24:29 I'm curious.
24:30 Take it from me, Bruce.
24:32 Around here, curiosity can get you killed.
24:35 Oh, and you would know.
24:37 Happy New Year!
24:40 Spray.
24:46 Just a flyby.
24:53 Didn't load it well.
24:54 Oh, silly me.
25:02 The safety.
25:03 Oh, pretty.
25:08 Yes, the green Baron.
25:12 Get out of there, everyone.
25:13 Yeah, you've got a chance.
25:15 Like, don't just assume that he's not going to do anything.
25:18 Oh, shit.
25:21 What are you trying to prove with this stunt, Joker?
25:26 Prove?
25:27 Stunt?
25:28 Joker?
25:29 No, wait, that one's right.
25:31 You think I'm holiday?
25:35 I didn't know you cared.
25:36 Oh, yep, yep, yep.
25:40 The boutonniere.
25:42 If I were him, why would I be trying to kill him?
25:45 He's the competition.
25:46 I won't be number two.
25:48 Oh, wow.
25:55 Great joke.
25:57 That took me a second.
25:59 And why gas everyone in Gotham Square?
26:01 Half the cities down there, which means holiday either is or isn't.
26:07 And if I fail?
26:08 Well, at least I've killed a lot of innocent people.
26:10 Yep, silver lining.
26:14 No, don't kill me.
26:15 Not before I find out who holiday is.
26:17 Why do you care?
26:20 I'm just like you.
26:22 We both love a good puzzle.
26:25 We're both the world's greatest detective.
26:28 Uh, yeah.
26:32 Do it.
26:34 You gotta contaminate all the fish in Gotham.
26:50 Yes.
26:50 It's like, please don't crash into a boat.
26:56 I'm an Oxford graduate who's learned more about business than my father could ever hope
27:01 to understand.
27:02 You don't get a seat at the table because I'm weak.
27:05 I fell in love.
27:06 How is that weak?
27:08 Because love's for sissies.
27:09 Yeah.
27:10 What happened to her?
27:12 I let him scare her away from me.
27:14 Why do I feel like I can talk to you?
27:16 I, um, I just.
27:20 No, yes, let's do this.
27:23 Oh, no, no, I'm sorry.
27:26 Oh, get away from her.
27:28 You bitch.
27:29 Bruce.
27:31 Wait.
27:32 Oh, dude.
27:33 No.
27:34 Wayne.
27:35 No.
27:36 What?
27:36 Selena.
27:38 What did you just do?
27:41 I don't want control of the family.
27:44 I never did.
27:46 I would happily trade that for a normal life to get married and have a child.
27:50 That was so clever.
27:55 Oh, okay.
27:57 Yeah, you did get shot.
27:59 I was like, that firework timing was magic.
28:01 Oh, where?
28:06 Okay, there.
28:07 You couldn't know you're missing so many pieces.
28:11 You.
28:14 Yeesh.
28:16 Oh.
28:16 Oh.
28:19 Oh, damn.
28:23 That is, that's a hell of a way to go.
28:25 Oh.
28:28 Oh.
28:30 It's the criminal on the neighborhood watch signs.
28:37 Have you seen this man?
28:38 He's killed everyone.
28:39 He's responsible for all crime.
28:42 What you thinking?
28:48 For old Lang Zine boy.
28:52 Old acquaintances be forgot.
28:55 I wonder if they're going to split this as a part one part two now.
28:57 I'm curious.
28:58 Hell of a way to go.
28:59 That isn't how he went.
29:00 He was shot by holiday before going overboard.
29:03 Alberto wasn't holiday.
29:05 It was Occam's razor, Jim.
29:06 The simplest solution.
29:08 So this is your fault.
29:09 If Alberto Falcone wasn't holiday, then who is?
29:13 That's not important right now.
29:15 And who's next?
29:16 We got till Valentine's Day.
29:18 Oh, dang.
29:25 So wait a minute, then.
29:28 Is she, would she have recorded the second movie by then?
29:36 I don't know.
29:37 Wow.
29:39 Damn.
29:39 And to like this, this very much feels like a chapter break.
29:45 Like, yeah, but it was just a very sort of graceful, you know, coming to a pause.
29:50 I was just thinking like, where is it going?
29:52 Are they going to escalate into the next holiday?
29:53 And like, I remember the comic always had that feeling between books.
29:56 David just Maltin was Calendar Man.
29:59 That's the voice.
30:02 Yeah, of course.
30:03 Terrifying.
30:04 Of course, his sort of like seething eeriness.
30:07 Yeah, totally.
30:08 Pitchy, uncomfortable.
30:10 I can definitely.
30:11 Just incredible.
30:11 He's like one of the nicest people in the world.
30:13 He's just so good at being terrifying.
30:14 I feel like that's, yeah, that's like a common thread.
30:16 Yeah, it's like people who play the most sort of like, either, you know, maniacal or just eerie
30:24 off characters are often, yeah, the like sweetest, most empathetic people.
30:28 But I guess you have to be to put yourself in the darkness, the less than glamorous shoes.
30:35 Yeah.
30:35 Man, that was good.
30:37 Yeah, I really liked that a lot.
30:39 Like, I love the mood and I love the pace.
30:41 Like, you know, after watching so many of these and contrasting and comparing the DCAMU stuff
30:48 we've seen to the, you know, brief excursions outside the DCAMU, I feel like this still
30:54 uniquely, you know, has its own very patient tone and pace that I appreciate.
31:00 This and the Frank Miller two-parter, I'm really, really bad with because this felt a lot like
31:05 Long Halloween without trying a lot, like I said about the Frank Miller one, it's adapting
31:09 without trying so directly to become it. But even the Frank Miller one, like the things we love,
31:14 the pauses, the taking the shot, like those things they did in that.
31:17 I love that this just felt like the world built.
31:22 Like it didn't try to be Tim Sales art, because again, I don't know if it would have translated,
31:25 but instead, like there was a shot of Batman where it's like him on his shoulder and he's
31:29 looking sideways and they grabbed like the lighting of his cape that looked just like Tim Sale.
31:33 And little moments like that for me really beautifully grabbed the world.
31:37 And obviously the writing's very Jeff Loeb. But man, that was incredible. 2021.
31:42 This is new.
31:44 Well, and yeah, like there's little flourishes like the Joker,
31:48 like his design, his like fangly teeth. Oh, oh, oh.
31:53 In your light, the sea light, and all the splendor of God. Amen.
32:01 Amen.
32:02 Carmine, if there's anything I can do, you know what I want you to do.
32:05 But time and time again, you refuse me.
32:08 When are we going for golf?
32:09 The Wayne Foundation isn't a money laundering outfit for the mob.
32:13 Of course, I don't believe you've met my associate.
32:16 Charmed.
32:17 Damn it.
32:19 No.
32:25 Cool post credit.
32:29 Very cool.
32:30 Yeah, like.
32:33 We'll go back to the cast list because like this, this was stacked.
32:36 Not only was the cast incredible, but like I really do appreciate the pacing.
32:42 I really appreciate how much it loved the source material.
32:45 But it's also like such a good movie.
32:50 Like, I feel like this is just like if you don't even like comics,
32:53 there's a lot going on here.
32:55 Oh, yeah, 100 percent.
32:57 And I mean, yeah, it's got so much, again, cinematic flourish.
33:00 And it's got these like new Irish elements.
33:03 Like, yeah, it very much feels like what I remember about the art and the mood of that
33:09 book. And it's a pretty long, like it's a thick book.
33:11 And yeah, and you really do feel like the I feel like it really puts you in,
33:16 even though you're hopping from holiday to holiday,
33:18 you still feel like you're sort of living in the space between.
33:22 It still feels like a long year, you know, right as this goes.
33:26 And I feel like they've managed to while still, you know, keeping it,
33:29 you know, in an hour and twenty five minute package or whatever, still like
33:32 clipping along nicely enough, but also, yeah, with that same sense of breath between everything.
33:38 And dread. Like one of the favorite things about the book is that you like you said,
33:41 a long year, it does feel like they're being beaten down by the time.
33:47 Like the time is another villain of this because they like there's a they know a holiday is
33:51 coming. They know they failed here. They know another holiday is coming.
33:54 It's the lack of control in this story that they have that doesn't work if you rush it.
34:00 Yeah. Because you don't feel the dread of another holiday. You don't feel the dread of failure.
34:03 You don't feel like grind. And I really think they captured that here,
34:06 especially with like this is only Halloween to New Year's.
34:09 Yeah, I know. Right. We still got like a whole big old leg of the journey to go.
34:13 Yeah. And like, you know, that each time,
34:15 you know, they give at least a little bit of service to the idea of what everyone's doing
34:21 for the holiday. Like, you know, I like this story. What I remember about the story,
34:27 partly because like, yeah, I think it's a really wonderful motif. It's a great serial killer motif,
34:33 but it's also just a great aesthetic motif. So you constantly have Gotham under these different
34:38 coats of decorum and decorum. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so I don't know. Yeah, it's really kind of
34:46 just, yeah, kind of capturing and highlighting and accentuating the unique sort of fun of this
34:52 particular story. And I think I've read this about five years ago, not quite as long as Dark Knight,
34:58 but it's just a long time. Yes, just it's one of the classics. Like this is a book I recommend to
35:03 everybody always like. Oh, yeah. Also, I was completely wrong. That wasn't Mark Hamill.
35:07 That was Troy Baker. Dude, I was I was wondering that during the reaction, because the times we've
35:11 heard Troy Baker do Joker, it is the one that is like he's so close to Mark Hamill. Yeah,
35:18 it is almost like I want to go now and figure out what's what. Yeah, I know. But that's the
35:24 thing is like now I want to figure out what's the specific earmark where you can tell when it's Troy
35:29 versus Mark Hamill, because I feel like whenever they have Troy Baker do Joker, it seems like the
35:36 point that they're going for is to emulate Mark Hamill. Yeah, because it's so spot on. It's like
35:41 it's so that that it doesn't seem like it's trying to be anything other than that. Yeah. So yeah. So
35:47 I wonder I'd like the tells seem like they would have to be kind of subtle because I feel like he
35:52 mainly worked with Kevin Conroy. So I was surprised that, you know, this was a Jensen Ackles Batman.
35:56 I said mainly I'm sure there's examples, but like I was like, is this the last time he played Joker?
36:01 Because this is so recent. But yeah, Troy Baker crushed it. I fucking love that performance.
36:05 I was so sensational. Yeah, no, 100 percent. And like, I love the the role the Joker plays in this.
36:10 Might be my favorite Joker. It could be. Yeah. Like that mask of the phantasm. Like those are
36:15 my favorite like portrayals and animation like this were solid. Like the jokes were great. The
36:19 mania was great. The delivery was great. Also love Billy Burke as Commissioner Gordon. Yeah. Good old
36:25 Papa Twilight. Oh, my God. Is that who that is? Ninety percent sure. Billy Burke. Right. Isn't
36:32 that like the cop dad from Twilight? Is it Charlie? I love Billy Burke. If that's who I think it is.
36:39 Yeah. Mustache dad. Forever a cop. Forever a mustache dad. Yes, he is. Oh, good call. Yeah.
36:48 I'm such a Billy Burke guy. That's so good. He's great. He's killing it. Josh Duhamel is
36:53 a Harvey Dent there. Yeah. Yeah. That one did not did not place it. And that's good because
36:58 because his design, his character design reminds me so much of Archer. And when he speaks, he
37:03 doesn't. So, like, right. Good. It helps to kind of separate from that. But yeah, I think he's doing
37:09 a great job. And Naya Rivera, like, rest in peace. But I like her portrait. Like, I'm sad now that
37:15 the prospect of more Catwoman portrayals from her won't be on the table because because I really
37:21 like their back and forth. And I love that interlude of them chasing each other on the
37:25 rooftops. And yeah, so flirty. It's so flirty, but it's also like it's very, again, atmospheric
37:32 and they're not talking a lot. It's sort of just a visual moment. It's almost a silent moment that
37:38 is prolonged, you know, for the course of like an entire scene. And yeah, like that, I think,
37:44 is a great aspect of, you know, a beloved novel like this deserves or the Dark Knight Returns,
37:52 like things like that. You know, you deserve a two parter, but it's also, you know, you see why
37:57 that's such a good idea when you have or I don't know, you just see how much that benefits it when
38:02 you get moments like that, that are allowed to breathe that way. I really love the sound design
38:08 in every sequence. That sequence is one of the first times I noticed it, especially, but like
38:11 the use of the rain, the use of like certain. No. Yeah. There's just so many sound moments in this
38:18 because it's so calm and ponderous. And that's the book. The book is very pensive and there's a lot
38:23 of frames that are just art. And that's that's kind of what we were saying earlier with the
38:27 Tim Sale art, maybe not just directly going animation because so many frames are just like
38:31 still and silence. And they managed to capture that without replicating the art. Yeah. Yeah.
38:37 And still while having a striking artistic palette, I mean, so many great, beautiful
38:41 just Gotham skyline shots and the way they have the sky and the moon and all these different things.
38:47 And I don't know. Yeah, this is really, really it's a modern production, certainly. And there
38:52 are elements of the animation that feel very modern. However, they do have some of those
38:58 flourishes that feel like, yeah, here's a big watercolor backdrop or something like that.
39:01 Giant yacht shot. Yeah, exactly. The background watercolor sky,
39:04 you know, was always a great impact moment in this.
39:07 Jensen Ackles' crush, too. I'm even more excited about the prospect of him playing live action.
39:14 I would love like, you know, we've heard him now as Red Hood and we've heard now as Bruce Wayne.
39:18 We'll see him again in the next installment. But yeah, I'm loving his portrayal so far. I mean,
39:23 he's the right age to play him in real life. It's true. I'm just saying. And I know James Gunn,
39:27 like I mean, the David Corden sweat and Rachel Brosnan casting is very much like Twitter being
39:32 like these people. So do your job again, Twitter. And let's get some Jensen Ackles Batman.
39:37 Absolutely. And it was it was Jack Quaid as Alberto. It was Titus Welliver as Carmine.
39:43 Old like my brain was like, Jack, you know, like I like kept seeing the wrinkles on a blur to the
39:48 face and I was like, is it him? And that was like a great performance by Jack Quaid. It didn't sound
39:53 young. It sounded like that. Like there was a lot of little extra like edges to words and stuff.
39:58 It was good work. Yeah. And yeah, he sounds very weathered by just life. What the character has had
40:04 to go through, what he sums up there towards the towards the end before he's murdered.
40:10 And I love this. Yeah, I mean, it's it's it's of this movie. It's also of the book. But yeah,
40:15 the way you have so many of Gotham's different rogues being like, I want to find out who this
40:21 holiday is to what's going on. It could easily be me, but it's not me like taking my job. Yeah.
40:27 Yeah. Yeah. And having like to go and consult. And that's like a well-worn Batman thing to
40:32 is like going to Arkham and gathering and talk to someone in prison. Yeah. But like, I love just
40:37 the way that this particular story presents that. And yeah, you're jumping around to all these people
40:42 who would like love to take credit but won't. Yeah. And I love how often like you've seen
40:47 this story adapted in different ways. I recently did a what to read if you like this video. And
40:53 for the Batman, I recommended Long Halloween because there's a lot of slow ponderous. It's
40:58 very Jeff Loeb, Tim Sale. There's holidays in it like that movie is very much that. But then also
41:02 the Dark Knight, the other most iconic Batman movie, I would argue. Sorry, Michael Keaton as
41:07 well. But like the most recent other of the big iconic, obviously, the lot of the stories is like
41:12 the three of them, Harvey and Gordon and Batman, the giant stack of money. There's Falcone like
41:18 there's a lot. But I would say the Dark Knight and the Batman are so different. Totally. They're
41:23 connecting to this. Right. I mean, yeah, there's so much rich story in the Long Halloween that you
41:29 can adapt the Dark Knight and you can adapt the Batman. You can have a Nolan action movie heist,
41:34 the heat. And you can also have not the heat, but heat. And you can also have the Batman, which is,
41:39 you know, you're you're David Fincher, you're seven year. And that's how strong and rich the
41:43 story is. Yeah. Well, that's what two is is so lovely. I think about comics in particular is that
41:49 whereas like with a novel or a book or something that is, it's one kind of thing. It's like, yes,
41:55 this is one particular story and this is the direct adaptation of that. But yeah, you can look
42:00 at multiple other adaptations and go, oh, this piece of work, the Long Halloween especially
42:06 keeps popping up in aspects and details. And yeah, the way you can make things that feel so different
42:12 while clearly also drawing direct inspiration from the same touchstone. And we've still never
42:18 had this movie. We still never had a Long Halloween and we've had the two biggest adaptations of
42:23 recent history not do this, but do this because it is so rich. Yeah. So, yeah, I love this is my
42:29 top third. It's going to be really hard when we rank all of them, because I think I think everything
42:34 is in the top there. Everything's well, there's a couple that are there's a couple. It's basically
42:37 lowdowners top third and then a couple. Yeah, it's going to be a real issue. Yeah, that's not
42:41 how math works. But we're going to be ranking those or by the time you've seen this, you may
42:45 have already that is on the books. We got some stuff cooking, but that when we rank our first
42:49 video, it's just going to be the DCAMU. This will not be included. We are going to do this all when
42:55 we've seen them all, which could be a couple of years. But we'll see you very soon for the DCAMU.
43:01 We got a patron. I want to get some love to give some love to a patron. All right. Who do we got?
43:05 This very video. Mikhail Linden Mikhail, listen up. This is a very elegant Gotham story. All right.
43:17 And I can just imagine you, you know, sitting around the Falcone, you know, table there breaking
43:23 bread with everybody made man part of the family, but conflicted. It's the holidays. You've got a
43:30 family of your own to think about. How did you fall into this life? Can you take credit for
43:35 the dastardly deeds afoot? Nay. But you could do something to stop them, Mikhail, because you're
43:40 an upstanding citizen of the Gotham that is Patreon. All right. So, hey, keep it real and
43:49 stay elegant out there. But maybe put your unique and innate skills to a more benevolent purpose.
43:58 You know, as we've left this movie off, it's Christmas, it's New Year, it's time to turn over
44:03 a new leaf, Mikhail. So while you would make, I think, a perfect mobster, I also think that your
44:09 moral compass is greater than a few dirty dollars, if you know what I mean. Family like the fast
44:17 family, not the mob family. Use your elegant crime tactics to save people. Boogie, Mikhail,
44:24 Linden's great name. I like that name. Yeah, it's a great name. So many great comic book characters.
44:29 Both the first and last name separate and together. Excellent work. Excellent. There's
44:33 a little accent, a little accent. Go over there. Does that mean it's then is it Linden?
44:39 Linden. Mikhail Linden. Sounds like someone you'd go to for like advice or like a wise.
44:47 Some yeah, some like real. Yeah, it's either like sage advice or some kind of like ancient
44:53 knowledge that is hitherto lost to man, except for by Mikhail. Mikhail Linden. Yeah, we appreciate
44:58 you. Thank you. All right. That is going to do it, you lovelies. We're going to wrap on out of
45:03 here. We'll be back for the long Halloween part. Yeah, most likely next week. And that is very
45:08 exciting stuff because this first one was excellent. Again, do not envy us ranking them
45:13 all. But it's got it's it's coming one day. Please let us know in the comments what you want us to
45:17 watch after the long Halloween part. Yeah. And please don't yell at me for calling him Mark
45:23 Campbell. It sounded a lot like him. I do apologize to everyone in the chat. I understand.
45:26 Retroactively. I mean, the people have already written it. They've already been yelling. It's
45:31 already in all caps. And I'm sorry. Now I hope you get to this part of the video and go, man,
45:35 I shouldn't yelled in all caps. I could have just said like, no, you fool. It's Troy Baker. And I
45:40 still would feel bad about it. But here we are. Here we are. All right. You love you. Remember,
45:43 check out the bad verse shirt. Remember, Comic-Con Saturday early afternoon. And remember,
45:47 call your family. Tell me you love them, whether they're a mob family or a fast family.
45:51 They're worth your love. We'll talk to you soon. Happy Halloween.
