00:00 Summer is a great time to focus on achieving fitness
00:03 and mental health goals, and here to help us
00:05 is best-selling author, Dr. Mike Dow.
00:08 Good morning, doctor.
00:09 - Thanks for having me.
00:11 - Is there anything we should be paying attention to
00:14 going into the summer?
00:15 - Yes, our diet.
00:18 So, we know that sugar and also flour
00:21 doesn't just expand your waistline,
00:23 it can shrink your brain, according to research,
00:25 as I outline in my book, The Sugar Brain Fix.
00:28 So, what you wanna do as you're enjoying
00:30 your summer holiday, find ways to get sugar
00:33 and also its cousin, flour, out of your diet.
00:36 So, have lots of leafy greens,
00:39 have the barbecue chicken over salad instead of bread,
00:42 have leafy greens in ranch dip instead of chips,
00:45 and swap out those sugary sodas for sparkling waters.
00:49 - What's one piece of advice do you give
00:51 for getting healthier this summer?
00:53 - Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate,
00:56 especially with these heat waves.
00:57 We lose sweat and excessive sweating,
00:59 we can lose minerals, and that is why I recommend
01:02 Liquid IV's Hydration Multiplier,
01:05 which is a great tasting electrolyte drink mix
01:08 that delivers hydration faster and more efficiently
01:11 than water alone.
01:12 Liquid IV is available at The Vitamin Shop
01:15 or on vitaminshop.com, the leading destination
01:18 for lifelong wellness solutions,
01:20 and you just add these packets to water.
01:22 It's available in these great tasting natural flavors
01:25 like lemon-lime, acai berry, and passion fruit.
01:29 - All right, let's talk about a good way
01:31 of getting fit this summer.
01:32 - You wanna have fun while you're getting fit.
01:36 My favorite outdoor activity is biking.
01:38 My very first bike was a Huffy
01:40 when I was seven or eight years old,
01:42 and today Huffy doesn't just make bikes,
01:44 they make e-bikes, they make scooters.
01:46 They've got bikes in almost every size and style,
01:50 truly a product to help everybody live the ride
01:53 and have a healthier and more active summer.
01:55 Huffy's got durable mountain bikes,
01:57 two kids' character bikes, beach cruisers,
02:00 and this really fun bike I was on yesterday,
02:03 the Huffy Everett Plus Electric Comfort Bike,
02:06 which is just perfect for riders
02:09 who wanna spend more time outdoors.
02:11 - Okay, let's talk about improving our diet
02:15 and our nutritionist's intake.
02:16 - In my book, The Brain Fog Fix,
02:19 I really outline why the American diet leads to inflammation
02:23 and one simple thing that anybody can do today
02:26 to decrease inflammation in both the brain and the body
02:29 is to add omega-3 superfoods to your diet.
02:33 So walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, wild salmon,
02:37 those omega-3s can bring down some of the inflammation
02:41 in both brain and body, leading to a better mood,
02:44 leading to better health outcomes in the body as well.
02:47 - All right, something that's very important,
02:48 and that is improving our mental health.
02:51 You know, I think all of us have a little inner critic
02:54 inside of our mind that sometimes spews
02:56 these catastrophic, worst-case scenario thoughts,
02:59 talking very negatively.
03:01 So when you hear that voice, just say,
03:03 I hear you, but I don't believe you.
03:05 So you can actually talk back to that inner critic.
03:08 What are things in your life, what evidence do you have
03:10 that things do work out,
03:11 that you still have hope in your life?
03:13 We know that if you could rewire your brain in this way
03:16 and become more optimistic,
03:17 you will also have even a longer lifespan, possibly.
03:22 So it's a really important thing to do, mind that mind.
