00:03 I'm Macy and this is Petal's story for GeoBeats.
00:06 I am the owner of Margarita Ranch.
00:08 [puppy whining]
00:11 I have horses, donkeys, pigs, and four chickens now.

00:18 [puppy whining]
00:20 They're all rescued.
00:21 [puppy whining]
00:22 I adopted two BLM donkeys from the government program.
00:26 Hello.
00:27 Petal Flower, I was told, was around two or three years old
00:30 and she looked like a normal donkey.
00:32 It was the end of August.
00:34 It was 8 p.m. and I heard a really loud bray
00:37 from the other side of the property where the donkeys were.
00:39 I walked over and it was a complete surprise.
00:41 [puppy whining]
00:46 Petal was already standing.
00:48 Petal!
00:49 [music]
00:52 She was so teeny tiny and her ears were so gigantic.
00:55 Let me see the ears.
00:56 Petal, do the medal.
00:57 Run!
00:57 [music]
01:01 Her mom's name was Flower, so I had to name her Petal.
01:04 Look at her go, look at her go!
01:05 [music]
01:08 Look at her.
01:08 [music]
01:10 She's so beautiful.
01:11 You just look at Petal and you just melt because she's so adorable.
01:14 She's snoring.
01:15 Petal walks up to you and she puts her head on your shoulder
01:17 and then she pushes you like she's trying to hug you almost.
01:20 [music]
01:23 Aww.
01:24 [music]
01:32 Is he okay?
01:33 Petal and Frankie got to grow up together and now they're best friends.
01:37 [music]
01:43 They don't leave each other's side.
01:45 [music]
01:47 They are so bonded, they do get upset when they're separated.
01:50 [phone ringing]
01:51 Oh, I don't buy my phone.
01:52 They nap in the middle of the arena together, they'll stand in the rain together.
01:56 [rain]
01:58 They definitely have the brother-sister type of relationship.
02:01 [music]
02:02 Frankie can be the annoying big brother sometimes for sure.
02:05 [music]
02:07 Oh, okay.
02:08 [music]
02:09 What is this spontaneous kick?
02:11 Then Petal can be the pesky little sister.
02:13 [squeak]
02:14 [scream]
02:15 Frankie is very silly.
02:16 Hi, Franklin.
02:18 He thinks he's big man on campus.
02:20 He likes to instigate with horses.
02:22 [music]
02:24 It's all in good fun.
02:25 [music]
02:27 They have so much more personality than you would ever think.
02:30 [music]
02:33 They run up to me and they're just asking for snuggles.
02:35 Can you see yourself?
02:37 We always call them by their name.
02:38 I'll call Petal and she'll come running.
02:40 They're almost more affectionate than horses.
02:42 [music]
02:47 The doggies will stand there all day if they could just to be pet and snuggled with.
02:50 [music]
02:58 A lot of people call donkeys stubborn, but they're very smart.
03:02 So if you try to get them to do something and they don't want to do it,
03:04 it's not because they're being stubborn, it's because they're trying to protect themselves.
03:07 [music]
03:12 People ask me, "Why did you get donkeys?" or "What are you going to do with the donkeys?"
03:15 And my answer, "I'm just going to snuggle them."
03:17 They're just there for love.
