Brexit regret: What is dual citizenship and who is eligible?

  • last year
If the Brexit referendum were to happen today, would you still vote the same way? According to a recent poll by YouGov, only thirty two percent of people think Brexit was the correct decision. With Brexit regret at an all time high, could dual citizenship be the answer to offering a chance to remain to some UK citizens?

00:00 Some people in the UK can have British citizenship as well as foreign citizenship.
00:07 But what exactly is dual nationality? Who is eligible and what are the pros and cons of applying for the special status?
00:14 British nationals who have dual nationality are able to hold a British passport and also a passport for another country.
00:20 Having this status means you can apply for foreign citizenship but also keep your British one.
00:25 To get the status you must have some form of connection to the country in question by way of birth, adoption, descent, registration or naturalisation.
00:33 This will depend on the country too. Some countries consider a married person automatically eligible for their partner's nationality whereas others do not for example.
00:42 The main benefit to obtaining dual citizenship is that it will give you the right to live, work, study and travel in both countries, something not afforded to British citizens since Brexit.
00:51 However there could be drawbacks, for example you may be subject to double taxation and you must abide by the laws of both countries.
