00:00 UMNO's weak performance in the state polls is a slap in the face for the party as it
00:06 proves that it has lost its relevance in the Malay belt, says an UMNO youth leader.
00:12 The party secured merely 19 out of 108 state seats it competed for, mirroring its poor
00:19 performance in the previous 15th general election held in November, where it managed to win
00:24 only 26 out of 120 contested constituencies.
00:29 UMNO Youth Permanent Chairman Wan Agil Wan Hassan said there are many things which the
00:34 party needs to improve on.
00:37 He said a post-mortem was never conducted after UMNO's loss in GE15 as it was too busy
00:42 forming the government and internal polls.
00:46 Wan Agil said although many still have affection for UMNO, it is not enough to improve the
00:51 party which has lost its relevance in the Malay belt.
00:55 In yesterday's elections, UMNO won only two seats in Selangor and in Penang.
01:02 The party also won only one seat in Kelantan, while all its candidates, including former
01:06 Menteri Besar Ahmad Said and Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, lost in Terengganu.
01:12 Meanwhile, UMNO Supreme Council Member Pua Zarkashi said the Barisan National Linchpin
01:17 needs a new narrative and suggested that it should no longer field candidates aged 45
01:23 above.
