00:03 Approved plans for a new hotel near Chesterfield Town Centre have been shelved
00:08 because developers say the scheme is no longer commercially viable in an economically challenged post-Covid climate.
00:14 Instead, they have put forward a new proposal for Basil Court, which is near the Donut roundabout,
00:20 to build an apartment block containing 40 flats with commercial units on the ground floor.
00:25 The planned apartments would stand alongside another proposed block containing 34 flats.
00:31 Consent for plans to build a 133-room hotel and an adjacent block of 34 apartments was granted in September 2021.
00:40 However, the applicant, Belmont Project, has stated in a submission to Chesterfield Borough Council
00:45 that Covid has hit the economic climate for the worse and there has been a change in demand.
00:50 Instead, Belmont Project has partnered with Housing Association The Guinness Partnership to put forward a revised scheme.
00:57 In a statement they said, "If this proposal is granted, it will offer Chesterfield Council 74 high-quality units for the housing stock in the affordable housing market."
01:06 They added, "There is no loss of employment by change of use from hotel to apartments
01:10 as this will be offset by the commercial units below the apartments."
01:16 A thief who repeatedly stole from shops in Chesterfield has been banned from a number of stores in the town.
01:21 David Annotts of St Augustine's Mount in Chesterfield was handed a three-year criminal behaviour order at Derby Crown Court yesterday.
01:28 The order bans the 43-year-old from entering the Ravenside Retail Park on Markham Road,
01:33 the Pavement Shopping Centre, as well as any of the stores on Lordsmill Street and from Low Pavement in the town centre.
01:40 Failure to comply with the conditions of a criminal behaviour order is an arrestable offence which could result in a prison sentence, a fine or both.
01:48 The order was sought by officers from the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team
01:52 due to Annott's high level offending and the number of offences committed over a 17-month period.
