00:00 It's still hard for some people to buy because the price of sugar is not yet back to the previous price of 50 pesos per kilo.
00:07 Now that the grinding of grains is starting, is it possible that the price of grains will go down in the markets?
00:13 Witness, Bernadette Reyes.
00:15 At the same time that the entry of the Bermuds, the grinding of grains started.
00:23 But now, the Sugar Regulatory Administration wants to ensure that the supply of sugar in the country is sufficient.
00:30 That's why in the visa of Sugar Order No. 1, it was ordered to classify all the sugar that the farmers will import as domestic sugar.
00:40 Because of the SRA's price, even if the production of sugar is partially increased to 1.85 million metric tons,
00:47 there is a risk of El Niño that it might affect the farmers.
00:51 Aside from this, the expected demand for sugar will reach 2.2 million metric tons or higher in the supply.
00:59 If El Niño is really severe, we expect about 10 to 15 percent drop.
01:04 If it's not severe, then we can get our estimates.
01:10 The SRA is not yet in charge, so there is no need for a new importation.
01:16 But they will study early if the supply will be lacking.
01:20 By May and June, we will have ample sugar.
01:22 The shortages usually is felt before the next milling.
01:25 So usually at the beginning, first quarter of 2024, we should already start surveying and planning if we will really lack or if we really need to import.
01:36 For now, the price of sugar remains stable since February.
01:40 Despite the government's efforts to lower the price of sugar, it did not return to the previous level of 50 pesos per kilo.
01:49 That's why small businesses like this are affected.
01:53 Before, I bought white sugar, but now I am using was. Was is cheaper.
01:58 The price of sugar is not yet decreasing.
02:01 Maybe that's the trend now because it's already December and everything is increasing.
02:10 According to the SRA, the new sugar will be delivered to Metro Manila in a few days.
02:15 It is expected to be sold for P75 per kilo.
02:20 For GMA Integrated News, Bernadette Reyes, your witness.
