Notre Dame Wide Receiver Play Must Improve

00:06 Now I'm not down on the wide receivers as much as maybe some people are, but

00:09 I don't like some of the things that I've seen from them so far this year.

00:13 They've certainly better coach than they've been in the past, but

00:15 there's some areas where this group has shown me some of the same mistakes over and

00:21 over and over again, or I shouldn't say mistakes, shortcomings over and

00:25 over and over again that aren't talent related.

00:28 Because you've got to be able to look at a unit and say, you know what guys,

00:32 they're just not good enough.

00:33 They don't have the talent.

00:36 You could watch the 2020 receiving core and be like, look guys,

00:39 they're not just gonna go out there and start with Javon McKinley and Ben Skirron.

00:43 Just start running by Alabama's corner, it's just not who they are.

00:47 They're good football players, but they're not elite big time speed guys.

00:51 They're not this kind of player, they're not Devontae Smith,

00:54 they're not good enough there.

00:56 You could look at the 2017 receiving core against George and be like, look guys,

01:00 they're just not very good.

01:01 I mean, Cameron Smith, he's just a solid player.

01:04 Freddie Canteen's just a guy.

01:07 You know, Equinemis St. Brown's a good football player, but

01:10 he's not a true number one for a championship caliber football team.

01:15 He doesn't have the mindset to be a true number one in that type of moment.

01:19 And it just wasn't good enough.

01:22 When I watch this football team play, I don't view it that way.

01:26 I think that they have the talent.

01:29 I believe that the talent isn't necessarily being utilized to the best

01:33 degree possible.

01:34 And I'll have a little bit of a breakdown of that on the message board with some,

01:39 all 22 to back it up.

01:41 But there's also some things where you've got to recognize what your talent is and

01:45 maybe play a little bit more to it.

01:47 And so when I look at the receiving core, it's not a bunch of burners.

01:51 Girl, Chris Tyrese pretty fast.

01:53 Tobias Merriweather has really good long speed.

01:58 And so you've got to figure out more ways to utilize that speed a little bit more.

02:02 But even with the Tobias, you've got to do things with him,

02:07 with Jaden Thomas, with Jaden Greathouse, Rico Flores,

02:11 where they've got to start better.

02:12 You've got to start better in those situations.
