00:00 All right, Greg, let's move to the offense.
00:02 I was reading your notes today,
00:04 and you might have an unpopular take
00:08 about this offense. - Shocking.
00:10 - What'd you think of that side of the ball on Sunday
00:14 when you watched the film?
00:16 - It's funny, like, you know,
00:18 when I have an unpopular opinion
00:19 because I stay true to the film,
00:21 that's negative on the Patriots.
00:23 Everybody, you know, calls me negative and all this stuff,
00:26 but now I'm gonna give this take,
00:28 and no one's gonna have an issue with it
00:31 because it's a positive take about the Patriots.
00:33 My take on the Patriots' offense
00:35 after watching them against the Jets
00:37 is that I think they were making progress.
00:39 I thought this was a step forward for this offense.
00:43 What are you talking about, Boudette?
00:44 They only got 15 points.
00:46 They couldn't do jack crap in the second half.
00:48 They punted like six times.
00:50 What are you talking about, you freaking idiot?
00:52 Like, I understand, but I'm just telling,
00:56 there's a couple things that make me think this.
00:58 Number one is I don't think people understand
01:01 how good the Jets' defense is.
01:03 It's really, really good.
01:05 I mean, we talked about it coming in.
01:07 Their defensive line, their linebackers are really good.
01:10 The cornerbacks are really good.
01:13 Whitehead, the safety is really good.
01:15 Like, it is, it's tough sledding.
01:18 You know, now, did the Cowboys shred it the week before?
01:22 Yeah, but again, that's, it's an abnormal opponent.
01:26 Those things happen.
01:28 You know, when you don't know teams that well,
01:31 and look, you know, the Cowboys had a day.
01:33 You know, what do you want?
01:34 Sometimes you're just on.
01:36 The Jets are really, really good.
01:37 So that's number one.
01:40 So you know it's gonna be tough sledding.
01:43 Number two, I thought, especially in the second half,
01:48 I thought the offensive line started to get some movement
01:51 in the running game.
01:52 They started moving the line of scrimmage,
01:54 which is, you know, when you're watching
01:56 on the coach's film, you know,
01:57 you can see it as clear as day.
01:59 You can see the uniforms pushing forward.
02:03 And I saw that more and more,
02:04 certainly more than at any point so far this season.
02:07 And to do that against this Jets defensive line,
02:10 even though, you know, some of it was when
02:12 Quinn Williams was getting a breather,
02:14 but I do think that was there on film.
02:18 And so that was good.
02:19 You saw some of the running game get going
02:21 with Ezekiel Elliott at times,
02:23 even with Romandre Stevenson.
02:25 So that was good.
02:27 I think that they are gaining more confidence
02:31 in the offensive line.
02:31 So we saw them go under center more.
02:34 We saw play action come in.
02:35 The 58 yarder to, I think, both Farrell Brown catches
02:40 came from play action.
02:41 So I think that's a key for this team.
02:44 And now, you know, look, are still things off,
02:48 especially in the passing game,
02:50 and, you know, some of the play calls and things like that.
02:54 Yeah, you know, let's also, and, you know,
02:57 I know they didn't penetrate like the Jets 29 yard line
03:00 the whole game.
03:01 Again, look at the opponent.
03:05 We're gonna do the same sort of thing
03:07 when we talk about the defense.
03:08 So I think we're looking at apples and apples here,
03:11 but I do think that against lesser defenses,
03:15 against lesser fronts,
03:16 I think they're gonna be able to impose their will more
03:18 in the running game.
03:19 I think it's gonna open up play action.
03:21 There's a lot of work to do as far as sorting out
03:26 who's gonna do what in the passing game
03:28 of what Mac trusts
03:29 and what their bread and butters are gonna be.
03:32 They're still figuring that out.
03:33 It's a little slow for me,
03:35 but to me, there was little doubt watching the film
03:39 by the end of the game,
03:40 even though the results weren't there.
03:41 And remember, they should probably should have had
03:43 another six points if Joe Cardona could snap the ball.
03:47 You know, this was a step forward for me.
03:50 I think, I don't think,
03:53 I know they are making progress as an offense.

04:46 - Yeah, we can't sit back and say,
04:48 "Oh, well, they only scored 13 offensive points
04:51 "against the Jets,"
04:52 when we all spent last week talking about
04:55 how good this Jets defense was.
04:58 Nobody anticipated them to put up 20-plus points
05:02 against this defense.
05:03 I actually thought, Greg,
05:05 they moved the ball much better in the first half
05:07 than I ever thought they would be able
05:09 to move the ball against that defense.
05:10 They moved it pretty well.
05:11 They had over 200 yards of offense in the first half.
05:14 Given the conditions, given the defense,
05:17 I thought that was good
05:18 and I thought that was a positive step like you're saying.
05:21 Really just to boil it down.
05:23 And we're gonna get into some other issues in a minute,
05:27 but offensive line to me was the biggest issue
05:29 the first two weeks.
05:30 And I don't think it's crazy
05:31 that the offensive line played a little bit better.
05:34 Your offense played a little bit better.
05:36 For the first time all year,
05:39 you had your top four linemen out there playing together.
05:42 So I know people kind of, their eyes glaze over
05:45 when Greg gets into the nitty gritty sometimes
05:47 talking about offensive line play, but it's crucial.
05:50 And it's really tough to run consistent offense
05:53 when your quarterback's running for his life
05:55 and your running backs can't find any room
05:57 to run the damn ball.
05:58 So offensive line played better, offense played better.
06:01 Let's get to the passing offense, Greg.
06:04 What's the biggest problem that you see?
06:06 - The biggest issue that I see is that
06:10 they just don't know the roles
06:15 that certain people should be in.
06:18 I mean, let's take for example,
06:20 the two Juju Smith-Schuster throws on third down.
06:24 This is Juju lining up sort of inside
06:29 and these routes going outside the numbers.
06:33 The combination of Mack Jones and Juju Smith-Schuster
06:36 working outside the numbers, it's just, it's not good.
06:40 We just know this.
06:41 There's enough evidence from both guys.
06:44 So it's not a high percentage play.
06:45 Now, on both of those plays, I think that Mack was right.
06:49 I thought that Mack threw good balls on both of those.
06:53 It's just like Juju's gotta figure out,
06:55 A, either Juju's gotta figure out who he is at this point,
06:59 which is basically a cashed outside the numbers receiver,
07:04 or the Patriots need to not put him in that position.
07:08 So should Juju be running those routes?
07:13 No.
07:16 Who should be running those routes?
07:18 I don't know.
07:18 I don't think they have a guy.
07:20 I mean, what's interesting is talking to people
07:23 around the team and we talk about the whole Myers debate.
07:26 And I think there's no doubt in my mind
07:27 that if they brought in DeAndre Hopkins
07:29 or somebody, an upgrade on the outside
07:32 and kept Jacoby Myers,
07:34 do I think this team has a legit shot at being three and O?
07:37 Yeah, I do.
07:38 But they made these choices.
07:40 And from what I understand,
07:41 Juju Smith-Schuster wasn't the Jacoby Myers replacement.
07:46 And so far, the way they've used him, you see that.
07:50 The Myers replacement was Mike Gusecki,
07:53 which just, it furthers the point of,
07:57 do the people in charge of Patriots personnel,
08:01 specifically Bill Belichick,
08:02 do they know what they're doing with offense?
08:04 I mean, I think, you look at their defense
08:07 and you could pick it, all right,
08:09 this guy was picked to do this role
08:10 and he knows what to do.
08:12 And then offense,
08:14 it's apparent that nobody knows what anybody is good at.
08:19 And it looks like they didn't have a plan
08:21 coming into this season.
08:22 Like this, we're signing this guy
08:24 and this is what he's gonna do.
08:25 And this guy is gonna do that.
08:26 Like it's just, they just threw some average bodies
08:29 and they said, "Well, we'll figure it out later."
08:32 And to this point, they haven't figured it out.
08:34 So, back to those throws,
08:37 like Juju is going outside
08:40 and he thinks he has a step on the cornerback,
08:43 thinking like, I don't know,
08:44 it's the Juju of five years ago
08:45 that he can beat this guy up the sideline.
08:48 He's not that guy anymore.
08:49 And Mack knows that.
08:51 And Mack says, "All right, well, just like Jacoby would do,
08:55 all right, work your leverage,
08:56 like press the issue up the field
08:59 and then break off real quick.
09:00 Boom, back shoulder, we got a conversion, we're moving."
09:04 That's the way Mack threw the ball.
09:05 I thought they were correct.
09:08 And so, there's just a lot of that on film.
09:11 You know, I blame Mack for the throw to Demario Douglas.
09:16 It looked like Mack sort of split it
09:17 between Giesicki and Demario Douglas,
09:19 but Demario had a step
09:20 and Mack threw it off his back shoulder
09:22 and threw it crappy, his footwork was bad.
09:24 Like that had a chance to be a touchdown.
09:26 And I don't know, he just kind of half-assed it.
09:29 He does that at times, you know, which I don't like.
09:31 But, you know, the big thing,
09:33 oh, and the other thing with Juju and Mack
09:35 and talking to people around the team,
09:37 'cause I asked them, I'm like,
09:38 "Do these guys practice together?
09:40 They don't look like they practice together at all."
09:43 And the answer I got was,
09:46 "They practice together sometimes."
09:47 I mean, you know, I think that has to do
09:50 with Juju's health. - What the hell?
09:51 - I mean, you know, how are you expected
09:53 to have a precision passing game?
09:55 The game is on the line,
09:56 you have a quarterback and wide receiver
09:58 who are working together and they need to know each other
10:01 like the back of their hand and they don't,
10:05 they look like strangers, why?
10:06 Because they don't practice that much together.
10:08 I mean, you know, I don't know.
10:10 I don't know what we're doing here.
