00:00 Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03 A council leader has defended a rapid response task force used to control illegal encampments in North East Derbyshire,
00:10 saying it's doing a 'brilliant job', despite another councillor's call for senior police to do more when tackling such problems.
00:17 Leader Nigel Barker of Labour-led North East Derbyshire District Council praised the work of the task force,
00:23 which was launched by Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster in February 2022.
00:28 But Councillor Ross Shipman said there has been a worrying increase in illegal encampments in the last two years,
00:34 citing particular problems at the Avenue washlands in Wingerwith,
00:37 and urged the council to write to the Police and Crime Commissioner to encourage police to do more to help landowners.
00:43 Liberal Democrat Councillor Shipman said,
00:46 "It appears to me that things are getting worse in terms of illegal encampments.
00:50 We've got the Illegal Encampments Task Force, which I have always called a 'talking shop'
00:55 because the activities it's supposed to do, it does not have the teeth."
00:59 However, the council leader argued that two months ago,
01:01 the task force dealt with those at an illegal encampment who turned up on Wednesday at North Wingfield,
01:06 and they were moved on by Friday, and in addition, he said,
01:09 as a council, he feels the authority should not criticise other statutory bodies.
01:16 Iconic venue, the Victoria Pub in Chesterfield,
01:19 is on the hunt for a new landlord to take over the reins of the beloved traditional pub.
01:24 For years, the Victoria has been at the heart of Brampton,
01:26 boasting a loyal customer base and a reputation for ales and lagers.
01:30 The current publican is preparing for retirement, and a search is now on for a landlord to take over.
01:35 The new landlord will have three bedrooms, a living room and a fully equipped kitchen
01:40 as part of private accommodation above the pub.
