00:44 Hello, this is Lok Satta Online's Gost Pardaya Makhchi.
00:53 I, Nayan Sapre, welcome you to this episode.
00:56 Rasikav, how was Sam Bahadur?
00:58 To find out, let's watch a story about him.
01:02 India had won the 1971 Pakistan War.
01:07 After the war, Pakistan's thousands of soldiers were taken into captivity.
01:12 For that, they were taken to a camp.
01:14 Sam Manik Shah would go to the camp and watch them do whatever they wanted.
01:19 There was a colonel among the Pakistani soldiers.
01:22 He told Manik Shah, "Sir, if I get a Quranic verse, I'll be blessed."
01:28 Sam Manik Shah took a piece of an Indian Muslim
01:31 and sent it to the colonel in a day.
01:34 A few days later, the same colonel met Manik Shah and told him,
01:39 "I've heard a lot about you. I'm sure you're not my commander."
01:44 Field Marshal Sam Manik Shah,
01:47 Major General Shubhi Sood wrote in his book,
01:51 that there was a meeting of the army commander in Lahore.
01:55 After the meeting, he was told that a few people had stopped to meet him.
01:59 When Manik Shah arrived to meet him,
02:02 a Pakistani officer took out his gun and put it on his feet.
02:07 When Sam Bahadur asked the officer the reason for this, he said,
02:11 "Sir, my five sons are in our captivity."
02:14 When he was sending me a letter from India, he wrote,
02:17 "You've given them a Quranic verse.
02:20 You've given them a place to sleep.
02:22 And even after all this, your soldiers sleep on the ground.
02:26 Now, the Indians are bad.
02:28 My faith in them has been washed away."
02:30 It's about the birth of Bangladesh.
02:40 In 1947, just like India became independent,
02:43 Pakistan also became independent.
02:45 When Pakistan became independent, it was divided into two parts.
02:48 One was East Pakistan and the other was West Pakistan.
02:52 Between 1947 and 1971,
02:55 East Pakistan and West Pakistan had no good relationship.
02:59 East Pakistan is the present Bangladesh.
03:02 And West Pakistan is the present Pakistan.
03:05 On 3 December 1971,
03:07 Pakistan launched Operation Changej Khan.
03:11 In this, Amritsar, Ambala, Pathankot, Jodhpur, Srinagar,
03:15 and other such places were bombed by Pakistani planes.
03:19 From there, India's struggle to make Bangladesh independent from Pakistan began.
03:24 On that day, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi
03:27 sent a message to the whole world.
03:30 "I am telling you about a dangerous time.
03:34 On 3 December at 5.30 PM,
03:38 Pakistan launched an attack on us."
03:41 On 10 April 1971,
03:47 People's Republic of Bangladesh filed a government to Kolkata.
03:51 Because many of the leaders of Bangladesh had left India.
03:55 Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was declared as the President of Bangladesh.
04:00 And Tajuddin Ahmed was declared as the Prime Minister.
04:04 In all these changes,
04:06 India was getting almost 10 lakh refugees from East Pakistan.
04:11 Instead of rehabilitating the refugees coming to India,
04:14 we should send India's army to East Pakistan
04:18 and help them. It will be easier for us.
04:21 And their country will be independent.
04:23 Such was the role of India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
04:27 Here was the entry of Colonel Sam Bahadur.
04:31 Indira Gandhi called them for a meeting and told them to start the war as soon as possible.
04:36 And East Pakistan,
04:38 means get ready to invade Afghanistan.
04:42 Sam Manikshaw was not ready for this.
04:45 He did not feel the right time for war.
04:48 After much discussion, Sam Manikshaw gave up his kingdom.
04:52 But he was not ready to start the war.
04:54 But Sam Manikshaw thought about the work he had done.
04:58 And Indira Gandhi trusted him.
05:01 A few days later, Sam Manikshaw
05:03 started his initial operations in East Pakistan.
05:07 In this operation,
05:09 they train and supply weapons to the Ghatmukhti army of the Bengali state.
05:14 They had trained three brigades of the Bangladeshi army.
05:19 And before the war, this army was used
05:22 to harass the West Pakistani army in East Pakistan.
05:27 Then, on 3 December 1971,
05:31 Pakistan invaded India.
05:33 At this time, Sam Manikshaw was fully prepared.
05:37 The Indian army entered East Pakistan, means Bangladesh.
05:41 And Amritsar, Ambala, Pathankot, Jodhpur,
05:44 and other places were also attacked by Pakistan's attacks.
05:49 So, for the first time, Sam Manikshaw had asked India not to invade.
05:55 But at the same time, he saved India by keeping both the borders in mind.
05:59 And he also freed Bangladesh.
06:02 [MUSIC]
06:08 Sam Manikshaw's one-time Pakistan President, Yahya Khan,
06:14 has a famous story with him.
06:16 And that is the story of the US-made motorcycle.
06:19 Before India became independent,
06:21 British Indian Army's Manikshaw
06:23 and Pakistan's then President, Yahya Khan, were friends.
06:30 At that time, Manikshaw had a US-made motorcycle.
06:33 When the country was divided,
06:35 Yahya Khan joined the Pakistani army
06:37 and Manikshaw joined the Indian army.
06:40 But on his way out, Yahya Khan told Manikshaw
06:44 that he had bought a US-made motorcycle for Rs. 1000,
06:48 but he did not give him the money.
06:49 He said, "I will send you the money later,"
06:53 but he did not give him the money.
06:55 Time passed.
06:56 Manikshaw became the leader of the Indian army.
06:59 And Yahya Khan became the President of Pakistan.
07:04 After Pakistan surrendered in the 1971 war,
07:09 Manikshaw said in an interview
07:12 that Yahya had to pay half the price of that motorcycle
07:16 by the country.
07:18 Now, Sam Manikshaw is sending a picture to him.
07:21 Now, the purpose of making a video on him is
07:24 to create curiosity in your mind about him.
07:28 And that curiosity will take you to the theater.
