00:00 There's more to our capital city than meets the eye.
00:11 Video journalist Amirul Ruslan has documented the unsolved mysteries of Kuala Lumpur under
00:17 his online handle, The Cool Things.
00:21 The Cool Things is a short video content platform that I use to tell stories about KL that I
00:27 feel are under-told because KL is a huge city with over 10 million people and it sprawls
00:34 out so much yet I've always been frustrated that this city is often told only by the stories
00:41 of the main districts or the popular trendy places.
00:47 Always looking for clues, the sleuth puts on his journalistic hat and relies on archives,
00:52 libraries and local knowledge to piece together his jigsaw puzzle du jour.
00:59 In conjunction with World Cities Day, FMT Lifestyle joins Amirul as he explores his
01:04 first KL mystery, street signs belonging to cities in France mysteriously hung up in a
01:10 Chowkit back alley.
01:13 One is Rue des Rivoli in Paris and Rue Asali in Nice.
01:18 I've done my investigation into it.
01:20 These signs have been here since at least 1989, which means they've been here longer
01:25 than I've been alive.
01:26 So for 34 years, someone planted them for some mystery purpose that we still don't
01:31 know about and in that time, it's just been forgotten.
01:36 The mystery even drew the attention of the French Embassy and the Alliance Francaise
01:40 with one theory linking the signs to a cultural program.
01:44 On the same street lies another French-themed mystery, an art deco-style mural of Café
01:51 Le Glace, one of Denmark's oldest patisseries, with a Parisian address, 32 Avenue de l'Opéra.
01:58 While there is no immediate connection between the two, 32 Avenue de l'Opéra is an 8-minute
02:04 walk away from the very real Rue des Rivoli in Paris.
02:09 This brings us to Amirul's next mystery, near the Bank Negara KTM station, the now
02:15 forgotten Residency Station.
02:18 Set to have been the first railway station in Kuala Lumpur, it was constructed on the
02:23 line to Batu Junction, passing through the grounds of the British Residency and was for
02:28 private use.
02:30 Amirul came across a 1903 Selangor State document which declared the closure of Residency Station.
02:38 Other records indicated it was converted to quarters for railway staff, while a 1925 article
02:44 refers to a meeting of the Engineering Association of Malaya at Residency Station.
02:51 Could it have been demolished by 1917 when the KL Railway Station was completed?
02:56 So far, nobody knows for sure.
02:59 Go there now and all you will see are KTM trains whizzing along the curved tracks, the
03:04 only remnant of Residency Station's forgotten past.
03:09 Divya Raghu and Alina Nadia, FMT Lifestyle.
