00:00 Hello and welcome, these are the top headlines making the news today from our newsrooms across the North West.
00:05 Booths supermarkets are ditching their self-service checkouts at the majority of its stores after feedback from shoppers.
00:11 The supermarket chain is stripping all self-service tills from 25 of its stores, including all branches in Lancashire.
00:17 Only two stores in the Lake District in Windermere and Keswick will retain the self-service machines to help staff during very busy periods.
00:25 As part of its renewed focus on customer service, booths will also increase the number of staffed checkouts and kiosks as part of its ongoing store renovation programme.
00:34 Blackpool has been named the most dangerous major town in Lancashire according to new figures.
00:39 The overall crime rate in Blackpool in 2022 was 162 crimes per thousand people in statistics coordinated by the public safety data group Crime Rate.
00:49 This compares poorly to Lancashire's overall crime rate, coming in at 95% higher than the Lancashire rate of 83 per 1,000 residents.
00:58 The final member of a Wigan gang which conspired to flood the streets with drugs and weapons has been jailed for 19 years.
01:05 The sentencing of 42-year-old Lee Standen of Liverpool Road Hindley, who was found guilty of conspiracy to supply cocaine,
01:12 means the gang's members have been jailed now for more than 80 years in total.
01:16 British Transport Police have published a picture of numerous discarded laughing gas canisters in a car park at Bear Lane Station near Morecambe
01:23 as the government makes possession of nitrous oxide a criminal offence.
01:27 The photo of the discarded canisters is a reminder of the dangers faced by teenagers,
01:31 inhaling the gas which can make people feel relaxed, light-headed or dizzy.
01:35 Heavy use can lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency which can damage nerves in the spinal cord according to a government report.
01:42 And finally, staff and tots from Epadium Nursery Little Acorns has completed a sponsored walk for a very special cause.
01:49 The walk around Gawthorpe Park was for Maggie's Stillbirth Legacy, a charity that helps bereaved families worldwide.
01:55 Explaining the reason for the walk, nursery manager Ria Hargreaves said that one of their families had suffered the devastating loss,
02:00 very unexpectedly, of their four-and-a-half-month-old son Yusuf.
02:04 In the weather, it's a lovely start to Friday with plenty of autumnal sunshine but feeling chilly.
02:09 Another cold start to Saturday but lots more sunshine and light winds.
