00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Behind me we have BMW's most powerful production car, the M8 Competition, and then right next
00:06 to it is BMW's most powerful production motorbike, the S1000RR.
00:10 We're doing something a little bit different today, and obviously we know that the bike
00:14 is going to win in the drag race, but we want to see how quick the M8 Competition is against
00:18 the motorbike.
00:19 So, today we're going to do a comparison of the performance specs, we're going to do a
00:22 sound check to see what both of these sound like, we're going to do an acceleration test
00:26 with the M8 Competition, we'll do a drag race with both, and then finally we'll do a brake
00:30 test as well to see how quickly they stop from 100km/h.
00:34 Now before we get stuck into it, what about the prices?
00:36 M8 Competition, just over $350,000, the motorbike just over $30,000, so there is about $300,000
00:43 price difference between these two.
00:45 Now if you are impatient and you want to jump straight into the drag race or other parts
00:48 of this review, you can use the time codes up there or scroll down to the description
00:52 for the links, and if you haven't done so already, make sure you hit subscribe and also
00:54 press the bell icon, because that's going to tell you every single time we do more fun
00:58 stuff like this.
01:00 Let's kick things off over here with the M8 Competition.
01:02 So under the bonnet, 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, makes 460kW of power, 750Nm of torque,
01:10 it redlines at 7,200rpm, and it should in theory do 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds, uses an
01:17 8-speed automatic transmission and top speed of 305km/h, and this car here has the optional
01:24 carbon package on it, so you can see carbon fibre here on the lower parts, on the wing
01:28 mirror, on the boot as well, and the roof is made out of carbon fibre too.
01:31 Now in terms of weight, it's just under 1,900kg, and that means that it makes 250kW of power
01:37 per tonne.
01:38 What about the motorbike?
01:39 I'm going to have a look at my piece of paper because my motorbike knowledge isn't up to
01:42 scratch and I want to make sure it's alright.
01:44 152kW of power, 113Nm of torque, but it peaks, the redline here is 14,600rpm, it's double
01:52 what the car's going to do, and the big difference there is the weight.
01:55 This weighs just under 200kg wet, and that means it's producing 785kW of power per tonne
02:02 compared to 250kW over at the car, so there is a big difference there in terms of how
02:06 quickly these are going to accelerate.
02:08 It uses a 6-speed transmission and it also has launch control.
02:11 It's all going to come down to traction and which one can actually get down the drag strip
02:15 quicker.
02:16 But I'm keen to see which one of these sounds better, so let's give them both a rev.
02:19 So let's start with the M8 Competition.
02:20 I've got my colleague in the car.
02:24 Oh, that sounds really good, I like that.
02:31 Let's give the motorbike a shot.
02:34 That sounds so, so good.
02:41 Okay, so time to log some performance numbers.
02:44 I'm going to do this a little bit differently.
02:46 I want to see what this is like to start with from 0-100km/h in a number of different modes.
02:51 I'm going to start with comfort mode, so everything is on normal.
02:54 I have the auto stop/start system running.
02:56 This is exactly what it would be like if you rolled up to the traffic lights.
02:59 So the car is off, I'm just going to stand on the throttle and we will see what happens.
03:03 Here we go.
03:04 Alright.
03:05 That sounds sick.
03:06 Okay, so 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds.
03:21 So let's go back and try working our way up through the drive modes.
03:25 Okay, this time around I'm going to put everything into the sportiest settings it can go in,
03:31 but no launch control yet and stability control will stay on.
03:35 So I'll put that into sport plus, put that into sport plus, put that into sport, sport.
03:42 Okay, that is all done.
03:43 We'll turn stop/start off.
03:46 Everything is in its highest setting.
03:47 I'll put the gearbox into sport 3 as well.
03:52 Okay, that is all good to go.
03:56 Let's see how this runs.
03:57 So I'm just going to stand on the throttle and we'll see what happens.
04:08 That feels, that felt quicker.
04:10 Holy crap.
04:11 Okay, 4.1 seconds.
04:13 We are working our way up to this magical number of 3.2 seconds, which is the official
04:19 claim.
04:20 Okay, next one.
04:21 I've got M1 set up with everything in its most hardcore mode with limited stability
04:26 and I'm going to try shifting here as well, just on my own.
04:31 We'll see if we can get any quicker to 100.
04:33 So that's all set.
04:34 Here we go.
04:35 Okay, that felt quick.
04:36 That felt quick.
04:37 All right, that is better.
04:38 3.9 seconds.
04:39 So we're getting there.
04:40 Next time it is going to be launch control and I'm expecting to see some bloody good
04:55 numbers here.
04:56 Okay, so this time around, let's go all out.
04:59 Launch control on.
05:00 So to activate that, you come to a complete stop.
05:03 Stability control has to be completely off.
05:05 So I've pushed and held that.
05:06 The light has come on down there.
05:07 I have to put it into S3, which is the hardest shifting mode.
05:11 I'm going to hold the foot on the brake, hard on the throttle, be on the kickdown switch
05:14 and I'll see launch control active down here and then I'll just let it go.
05:17 So here we go.
05:18 All right, that felt good.
05:26 Oh, there it is.
05:30 Okay, 3.4 seconds.
05:34 Right on the lip there.
05:36 There is just a tiny bit left in it.
05:37 I kind of pre-shifted to second there, helped it get off the line, but I reckon 3.4 is about
05:43 as close as we're going to get.
05:45 That felt good.
05:46 Bit of heat in the tyres.
05:47 It is slingshotting forward.
05:49 Let's try our quarter mile time.
05:51 Okay, final run here is with launch control and we're going to do the quarter mile this
05:55 time.
05:56 So we've lined up on the start line there.
06:00 Wish me luck.
06:01 Holy crap.
06:02 Oh man, there's 140, 150, 160, 170, 180, 190.
06:03 Oh, that's a lot of power.
06:04 It's just run an 11.2 at 202 kilometres an hour.
06:30 This is a stock car.
06:32 That is insane.
06:34 And what's more insane about this whole situation is this track is damp.
06:38 So stock car, damp track.
06:41 This is unbelievable.
06:42 And on top of that, 0 to 100 down to 3.3.
06:46 So it just takes a bit of finessing, but this is a serious machine.
06:50 Okay, so we're just about to race the motorbike, but I just wanted to point out a couple of
06:53 things before we get started.
06:55 The weather conditions here are pretty miserable and the track is cold.
06:58 It was raining earlier in the day, so grip is going to be a little dicey.
07:02 All I'm going to do is just nail the throttle.
07:04 He is going to be sending all his torque through one tyre.
07:07 I can send it through four.
07:08 So I think it's going to be a whole lot closer than we thought it would, but we'll try it
07:11 a few times.
07:12 He'll try a few different modes on the motorbike and we'll see what happens.
07:15 Okay, it is time to race the motorbike.
07:17 I am very nervous here because I don't want to hit him.
07:20 I know it's going to be quick, but I also know this is going to be quick as well.
07:24 So let's give this a shot.
07:27 Okay, I can see him catching up to us.
07:32 All right, here he comes.
07:35 Oh man, that was sick.
07:40 Oh my God, okay, I got a really good clean start there.
07:49 I am seriously shaking.
07:51 That was so unbelievably cool.
07:53 Okay, so I got a good start.
07:55 0-100 in 3 seconds, 203.4 kilometres an hour.
07:59 Let's see how the bike did.
08:00 11.2 seconds at 224.5 kilometres an hour.
08:01 Wow, okay.
08:02 And 0-100 in 3.9 seconds.
08:03 Okay, so we were quicker 0-100.
08:11 What you didn't see in the frame there was the bike was on a wheelie halfway down the
08:16 straight and then he blitzed through like just ahead of me across the quarter mile,
08:23 but at a much faster speed.
08:24 So I think he has some more in it.
08:27 Let's go give this another shot.
08:28 Okay, we're going to do this once more.
08:32 This time he's going to use launch control.
08:35 I'm going to do exactly what I just did and we will see what happens.
08:38 He's got a little bit more warmth in his tyres now, so I think he should be able to hook
08:42 up a little better.
08:43 Okay, here we go.
08:48 I've got him again.
08:56 Here he comes, here he comes.
09:02 Just just just.
09:03 Oh man, that was close.
09:10 That was close.
09:11 Okay, so I muffed up my start a tiny, tiny bit.
09:15 11.5 seconds, 199.3 kilometres an hour.
09:25 So same time, same time.
09:28 Wow, okay, so he muffed up the start, but the time was identical.
09:33 11.5 a piece.
09:34 Okay, this time what we're going to do, we're going to try adjust one of the settings on
09:38 the launch control on the bike.
09:40 This is doing it pretty consistently, so I'm happy with this.
09:43 Let's see if we can get this any closer.
09:46 I'm pretty bloody impressed so far with this.
09:49 Okay, we've got one more run here.
09:52 This time we've adjusted some of the settings on launch control in the bike.
09:56 I'm just going to do the same thing over here and we will see what happens.
10:01 Okay, here we go.
10:04 Okay, okay, here we go.
10:08 We've got the jump again.
10:13 Here he comes, here he comes.
10:19 That was close yet again.
10:21 Oh my God, I think I had him.
10:24 11.3 for us, 202.8 kilometres an hour.
10:29 I think I had him.
10:30 Okay, so that last one was 11.5 seconds at 204.4 kilometres an hour.
10:35 There you go, okay.
10:38 And 0 to 100 in 4.5 seconds.
10:41 Okay, so I think what we've discovered here is that the motorbike is fast.
10:45 It is absolutely fast once it gets traction, but it is temperamental to get traction off
10:49 the line.
10:50 It is just, yeah, it is taking a lot of effort for him and he's an experienced rider to get
10:54 it off the line smoothly.
10:56 Once it hooks up though, it reels us in, but man, the cars are just easy.
11:00 I just stand here and just mash the throttle and it all just happens.
11:03 It is bloody impressive.
11:05 Yeah, it is seriously cool stuff and I love that we've been able to do this.
11:08 Let's see how they go with the brake test.
11:11 Okay, so the final test we have here is our braking test.
11:15 So the M8 Competition has a feature where they've integrated the brake booster and the
11:20 control logic all into one module and the brake pedal is actually electrically actuated.
11:25 So instead of being like a pressure driven system, as soon as you touch it, it's ready
11:28 to go.
11:29 Now that I've got the car in Sport everything, the second I tap the brake, it's actually priming
11:33 everything and making it ready to go.
11:35 So we're going to brake from 100km/h and see how much quicker we stop ahead of that bike.
11:40 Okay, so there's 100.
11:44 Wait for our marker.
11:47 Ooh!
11:48 Okay, so we stopped in 37.2 metres and it took three seconds.
11:58 Have a look at that difference there.
11:59 So his bike was maybe one and a bit car lengths ahead of us.
12:04 Okay, so it was 100 to zero in 3.7 seconds in 43.5 metres.
12:09 Wow, so it was almost five metres longer to stop from 100km/h and almost a full second
12:16 longer.
12:17 So it shows you how much quicker a car stops over a bike and that thing has ABS as well
12:20 to stop it from skidding out of control.
12:26 That was insanely fun.
12:27 This car is impressive.
12:29 It is fast, it's consistent, it makes a good noise and it just puts a smile on your face.
12:35 And it shows you that even with a motorbike, motorbikes are fast.
12:38 Cars are also fast.
12:39 So I know that in ideal conditions the motorbike is going to be quicker, maybe a longer track
12:43 it'll be quicker as well.
12:44 But yeah, this really surprised me.
12:46 So let me know what you think in the comments below.
12:48 Don't go too aggro on the results.
12:49 I'm sure you can do it 20 times over and get different results, but this car was quite
12:53 consistent.
