00:01 Behind me are two very yellow cars.
00:02 That one over there has the world's most powerful series production four-cylinder engine ever
00:08 created.
00:09 And that one over there is $23,000 cheaper.
00:11 We are, of course, talking about the Mercedes-AMG A45 S and the Mercedes-AMG A35.
00:16 Today I'm going to take you through a styling comparison, an exhaust sound check, acceleration
00:21 test, drag race, and a brake test as well.
00:26 If you don't want my amazing lesson, you can jump ahead to other parts of this review using

00:44 Let's talk styling and you're going to notice some massive differences when these cars are
00:47 up close together.
00:48 In the pictures, I didn't really notice much of a difference between the A45 and the 35.
00:52 But you can see right here that this looks a whole lot meatier.
00:55 It's like it's been working out at the gym and it's got big muscles.
00:58 This still looks good, but it isn't quite as out there or as aggressive.
01:02 So have a look at this grille over here.
01:03 This is what Mercedes-Benz calls the Panamericana grille.
01:07 It's a 12-slat grille.
01:08 It's used on more high-end Mercedes-Benz products like the AMG GT and it wears that Mercedes-Benz
01:13 emblem very proudly.
01:15 And if you've seen our other videos, you'll know that that is there for some of the safety
01:18 systems such as radar cruise control.
01:20 Now what about the radiators?
01:21 You'll see here in the A35 that they're completely closed off those air vents.
01:25 It only has a little bypass here that kicks out just in front of the wheel.
01:28 This on the other hand has a radiator nestled in over here.
01:31 There's no air bypasses there.
01:33 The other side is completely blanked out.
01:34 So they're the main differences down that lower end.
01:37 Have a look at this bonnet.
01:38 This uses what they call a power bump.
01:40 Instead of being flat like it is on the A35, it's got a little chisel on it.
01:44 This is kind of like another pectoral.
01:45 I think that's an arm muscle.
01:48 So it's kind of like an extra muscle you've got there.
01:51 Then with the aero pack, you're getting these little extra bits here.
01:53 It gives it a bit more of an aggressive look and lets people know that you mean business.
01:57 This is my favourite part.
01:59 Check out those wheel arches.
02:00 They kick down 27mm wide on each side.
02:04 The actual track, which is the width of these wheels apart from each other, is an extra
02:08 24mm compared to the A35.
02:11 So this has a really chiselled look when you look at it from front on.
02:15 You can see that pumped out compared to the A35.
02:18 And you're also going to notice this.
02:19 While the A35 gets pretty meaty looking brakes, this is the business end of the AMG set.
02:25 This is a 6-piston caliper.
02:27 It's a 360mm diameter rotor.
02:30 They are some serious brakes for such a small car.
02:33 Remember that this is marginally heavier than the outgoing A45.
02:37 So it needs a big set of stoppers to make sure it pulls up in time.
02:40 Right, let's have a look at the back styling.
02:42 Before we get there, the tyres.
02:44 24mm wide on the A45 to 35mm wide on the A35.
02:49 So you're getting a little bit of extra traction here for that all-wheel drive system.
02:53 The styling around the back continues for that aero package.
02:55 You're getting this big wing on the rear, the lower diffuser, and that's on both cars.
02:59 You can get these cars without the aero package.
03:02 This also has the Edition 1 pack, so you're getting the decals on the side.
03:06 What about the interiors?
03:07 Well, they're actually pretty similar, so you're not really losing out on much if you
03:10 go the A35.
03:11 You still get that awesome-looking steering wheel, which has the LCD switch for the drive
03:15 modes.
03:16 The Edition 1 also picks up pinstriping inside, stitching, and then there's decal on the dashboard
03:21 as well, and edition on the steering wheel.
03:23 So what about exhaust sound?
03:25 Let's start here with the A35.
03:26 Fire it up, Scott.
03:27 Give it a rev.
03:28 Sounds okay, but it's not making an absolute racket like you'd expect from an AMG car.
03:40 So what about the A45?
03:42 Two more exhausts.
03:43 Is it louder?
03:44 Scott, fire it up.
03:55 Not quite.
03:56 Like, it is louder, but it's not cracking and popping like I was expecting it to.
03:59 And by the way, we have warmed up both cars, so they are running warm.
04:02 So it is a little bit disappointing that we're not hearing more emotion from them from standstill.
04:06 There is one secret here, though, and it's called Emotion Start.
04:10 So when you're turning the car on, you hold one of the paddles and then switch it on,
04:13 and it makes this sound here.
04:15 It does a little bit of a burble.
04:18 So if you're in an underground car park, at least people are going to hear that you're
04:21 driving the 45S.
04:23 Okay, acceleration.
04:25 First up, let's see how quick the A35 is.
04:28 We've rolled up to the drag strip.
04:29 I've got the V-Box running.
04:30 Launch control is pretty easy to do.
04:32 Just foot on the brake, foot on the throttle.
04:33 It comes up saying "Race Start", "Release Brake to Start", "Flashing Lights".
04:37 Here we go.
04:38 Oh, that feels quick.
04:39 All right.
04:40 There's 100 kph.
04:41 Whoa, that felt really quick.
04:42 What are we?
04:43 4.8 seconds.
04:44 Okay, that is pretty impressive there.
04:45 The backfires a little bit for the A35 AMG.
04:46 Okay, we're in the A45S now, but just for fun, I'm going to do 0-100 here without launch
05:04 control, just so we can see how quick it is.
05:06 So I'm in Sport, I'll put it in Sport Plus.
05:07 I'm just going to hit the throttle and we'll see what happens.
05:09 Here we go.
05:10 Oh, that feels slow.
05:11 There's 100 there.
05:12 5 seconds dead.
05:13 That's interesting.
05:14 So unless you use launch control, this is actually a little bit slower than the A35
05:31 with launch control.
05:33 Okay, time to do this again, this time with launch control.
05:35 Got it in Sport Plus, foot on the brake and the throttle, that'll activate it and then
05:39 we let go.
05:40 There it is.
05:41 Here we go.
05:42 Oh man.
05:43 It's spitting the wheels.
05:44 It was just doing a four-wheel drive burnout.
05:55 Holy crap, that is quick.
05:57 Okay, so 4.1 seconds, but I think there's actually more in it.
06:02 I'm not even kidding you, we hit second there and then it started squirming a little bit.
06:07 This thing is ridiculous.
06:09 Absolutely ridiculous.
06:10 Okay, we're going to do this again with launch control, except this time I'm going to put
06:14 this into Sport Handling Mode, which will limit stability control.
06:17 I reckon there's a bit more in this, so let's give that a shot.
06:20 That's all set up.
06:21 Here we go.
06:22 Oh man.
06:23 It's squirming.
06:24 Oh man, there's 100.
06:25 That is bloody quick.
06:26 Okay, that time around, 4.1 seconds, so we're not able to get any lower than that, either
06:39 with or without traction control, but I can definitely feel the wheels spinning as it
06:44 flicks through those gears.
06:45 That is how much power and torque this engine has.
06:48 Okay, it is time for us to drag race the A45S against the A35.
06:53 Pretty confident this one is going to win, but I could stand corrected, so we'll see
06:58 how we go.
06:59 So in the car next to me, I have Scott, my colleague.
07:03 He's going to jet off at the same time.
07:04 We're going to use launch control in both cars and we're going to go over a quarter
07:08 mile and then Eagle, the video man, is going to stop it at 100 k's an hour, so you can
07:11 see which one is quicker at that point.
07:13 And then once again, we will reconvene at the end of the quarter mile and we'll see
07:16 what happens.
