The 5-cylinder engine in the Audi RS3 is one of my favourite engines ever. It sounds unreal, is hyper responsive and suits this tiny little hatch perfectly. So, join Paul Maric for a test drive of the 2023 Audi RS 3 Sportback!

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:00 There is nothing I like more than a five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine,
00:05 especially one that has an RS3 badge on it.
00:08 This is the third generation Audi RS3,
00:11 and I'll run you through a couple of the changes
00:13 and why I like it so much very shortly.
00:15 But this competes with things like the BMW M2,
00:19 the Mercedes-AMG A45 S,
00:22 and then also kind of the Volkswagen Golf R as well.
00:26 This is priced from just over $90,000.
00:29 There is a sedan version of this available in Australia as well.
00:32 Today we're going to do a detailed review of this car,
00:34 so if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of the review,
00:36 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:38 or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:41 If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel,
00:43 press the bell icon.
00:44 That way you'll find out every single time we drive a taxi-coloured car.
00:47 Let's talk about the exterior first.
00:50 So you've got eight colours to pick from.
00:52 They're all free of charge, yay.
00:54 Now, in addition to that,
00:55 there are a number of options you can get with the RS3.
00:58 This has some of them fitted.
00:59 I'll point out whatever I notice,
01:01 but the other complicating part is that
01:03 because of chip shortages and all this other stuff,
01:06 some stuff that's meant to be on this car isn't on this car.
01:08 So yeah, before you put your money down,
01:10 just make sure you're getting what you're going to be getting.
01:13 So down the front here, let's have a look at this first.
01:15 So big black grille.
01:17 I love this blacked-out Audi logo
01:19 instead of it being chrome.
01:20 RS3 badge over there as well.
01:22 And you'll notice here, there's meant to be a camera there,
01:25 but there isn't because chip shortages.
01:28 You can see also this engine loves a bit of cooling.
01:31 With the Dynamic Plus package, which this car has fitted,
01:34 it will do 290 kilometres an hour,
01:37 which is up from 250 if you don't have that package fitted.
01:40 So you have to have a fair bit of cooling
01:42 when the engine is churning out that much power
01:44 to keep it moving at 290.
01:46 I do love as well all of these big inlets over here
01:49 for cooling too.
01:50 They really just give this a gnarly appearance
01:53 when it's approaching you.
01:54 The other thing I love as well,
01:55 it's going to be hard to show you,
01:56 but these headlights are start sequence
01:58 when you unlock the car.
01:59 This little thing on the side here is an 8-bit graphic
02:02 and it comes up with RS3 when it unlocks,
02:04 which again is pretty cool.
02:06 Over on the rest of the headlights,
02:07 so you have matrix LED.
02:09 Again, not available at the moment because of chip shortages,
02:12 but that's what it is.
02:14 Daytime LED running light there as well.
02:17 Then we'll whip around to the side.
02:19 So you've got a set of 19-inch alloy wheels.
02:21 Again, love that black finish on there.
02:24 Now, let's talk about brakes
02:26 because this car has that Dynamic Plus package
02:29 and as a part of that, you get carbon ceramic brakes
02:32 and they look so cool under there.
02:34 So 380 mil rotor, six piston calipers.
02:38 Even if you don't get the carbon ceramic package,
02:39 I think there's still 375 mil on a steel rotor.
02:42 So they still look nice and imposing under that wheel.
02:45 So up the top here,
02:47 you'll see the start of the carbon package.
02:49 So this is all carbon fibre
02:52 and that is again an optional package
02:54 you can get on the RS3.
02:55 I reckon it looks awesome here with this yellow colour
02:57 indicator built into there
02:58 and typically you would have the rest of the 360 camera
03:01 under there, but it doesn't exist.
03:03 Cooling off to the side here.
03:05 I love how this is flared as well.
03:08 So as part of this third generation RS3,
03:10 the track has become wider
03:12 and what you'll notice at the front there
03:14 is that the front tyres are actually wider
03:15 than the rear tyres.
03:16 So 265 mil wide tyres at the front,
03:19 but 245 at the rear.
03:20 So slightly staggered set up there
03:22 and you can really notice that sort of extra bulk
03:26 to the front of it,
03:26 especially compared to something like an S3,
03:28 which still looks pretty aggressive as it is.
03:30 More carbon down the bottom here
03:32 as it follows along the side of the car.
03:34 Privacy glass.
03:36 Come around to the back, I'll show you the rear.
03:38 More carbon up the top here.
03:41 Love that.
03:42 Shark fin aerial.
03:43 More of those black badges as well.
03:46 RS3 down there.
03:47 And then the dual exhaust pipes
03:49 that are actually quad exhaust pipes
03:51 if you have a closer look.
03:52 Full LED taillights as well.
03:55 So love this design.
03:57 I think this looks so nice and aggressive out on the road.
03:59 And these have a lot of respect.
04:00 People know not to mess with an RS3 out on the road.
04:03 And sorry the car's so dirty.
04:05 This weather is insane.
04:07 It's like bucketing down one day,
04:09 really hot the next day,
04:10 humid, so anyway, you can't keep the car clean.
04:12 So let me know what you reckon about the design
04:14 in the comment section below.
04:16 So we are inside the RS3.
04:17 This is what the key looks like.
04:19 You've got lock, boot, unlock, Audi,
04:23 and then on the back you have RS.
04:25 This is a proximity sensing key.
04:27 And then once you're inside the cabin,
04:29 you have the push button start down here.
04:32 So let's talk about the design.
04:35 I was kind of okay with how all this looked
04:37 when this was a $70,000, $80,000 car.
04:41 Now that it's 90 odd thousand dollars
04:43 and this has like 10, 15 grand worth of options on it,
04:47 I just reckon it looks a little bit low renting
04:50 in comparison to the A45 and the new M2 as well.
04:54 And given this has only just been updated to the third gen,
04:56 I would have thought they'd kind of go all out with that.
04:58 So look, the materials are good,
05:00 but yeah, it's just sort of, I don't know,
05:03 lots of piano black and some of the scratchy stuff
05:05 in the center here and on the doors just isn't fantastic.
05:08 So anyway, outside of that though,
05:11 I mentioned the materials.
05:13 It's kind of firm here on the center
05:15 and firm on the door as well,
05:17 but it provides ample padding
05:18 if you do rest your elbows on there.
05:20 How soft are those surfaces?
05:23 Well, we've got our durometer.
05:24 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
05:27 If you want to see how this car compares to others
05:29 that we've tested before,
05:30 have a look at the link in the description below.
05:32 Now, build quality.
05:33 I say this about a lot of Audis,
05:36 this is very solid door test.
05:39 (doorbell rings)
05:41 Sounds excellent.
05:42 Okay, infotainment, let's talk about that.
05:44 So you have a 10.1 inch display here
05:47 in the center of the cabin.
05:49 Look, the display is fine.
05:51 There's sort of no dramas with it.
05:52 It's got the haptic feedback and stuff,
05:54 but when I talk about the M2 and the A45,
05:57 they both have significantly bigger screens
05:59 and I guess newer, more innovative infotainment systems.
06:03 So this is still fine,
06:04 but it just feels like it's perhaps a generation
06:06 behind some of those competitors.
06:09 On the radio front, you have AM, FM and DAB digital radio.
06:13 That's all plumbed through a 15 speaker
06:15 Bang & Olufsen branded sound system.
06:18 Normally the B&O stuff's great,
06:19 but I just didn't think it was that amazing in this car.
06:22 Maybe it was just 'cause I was listening
06:23 to a bad audio source,
06:25 but I thought it could have been a little bit better.
06:27 You get inbuilt satellite navigation,
06:30 including satellite overlays.
06:32 So you can see them there.
06:33 We're at our test track at the moment.
06:36 A bit old joint.
06:37 In terms of smartphone mirroring,
06:38 you have Apple CarPlay, that's wireless,
06:39 and it actually works really well.
06:41 It takes up that full screen.
06:43 Very easy to use, quite high resolution too.
06:45 Then on the Android front, you have wired Android Auto.
06:49 Same story again, full screen integration
06:51 and pretty straightforward to use as well.
06:54 Head of the driver, you have a 12.3 inch display,
06:56 and that is Audi's virtual cockpit.
06:58 You can switch between a couple of different views there
07:01 and change the context menus in the center.
07:04 I think they actually do this really well.
07:06 This is very easy to use and very straightforward,
07:08 and I'm a fan of how they've put all of that together.
07:11 Now, safety tech, you have AEB
07:13 with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
07:16 This is where it gets a little bit confusing.
07:18 I mentioned the chip shortages earlier.
07:20 That is affecting some of the safety features.
07:21 So it should come with blind spot monitoring
07:23 built into the wing mirror,
07:25 radar cruise control with a lane departure warning,
07:27 lane keeping assistant, and lane centering.
07:30 You should also have rear cross traffic alert
07:33 and front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
07:35 But again, part shortages, some of the stuff will be missing,
07:38 and as a result of that, the camera isn't 360 here,
07:41 but I'll show you what the quality looks like
07:43 for the reverse camera anyway.
07:44 It's actually pretty decent quality.
07:46 I can see our suitcase very easily there,
07:47 and those guidelines move with the steering wheel as well.
07:50 And you can see the sonar here
07:52 for the front and rear parking sensors too.
07:54 So not a bad setup.
07:55 Moving on to practicality,
07:57 and we'll start off with your connectivity.
07:58 So you've got two USB-C chargers down the bottom here,
08:02 a wireless charging pad via phone, a 12-volt outlet there.
08:07 Now, where are you gonna put your phone?
08:08 So it can live in the cup holders here,
08:10 and they're adjustable too,
08:11 so you can whip those out of the way
08:12 if you do wanna store your phone.
08:13 Or you can pop it down there on the wireless phone charger.
08:16 What about our coffee cup?
08:17 So I tried to pop this in here this morning,
08:19 but the lid catches the edges there,
08:21 so you're gonna de-lid it if you're not careful.
08:24 But I've propped my keys up with it, and it's fine.
08:26 Position of that's also good.
08:27 Bottle fits into there without any dramas,
08:30 but because there are teeth, but they're sort of,
08:34 yeah, they're kind of in a bit of a weird position,
08:35 your bottle will just sort of move around a little bit.
08:37 Bottle does fit inside the door though,
08:40 which is good news.
08:41 Other storage, you have a little slot here
08:43 just next to the driver's knee for coins, keys, odds, and ends.
08:47 Center console here, pretty tiny, if I'm honest,
08:50 but that does go forwards and backwards as required.
08:52 And then finally, you have a glove box down here,
08:55 which is pretty reasonably sized.
08:57 Let's talk comfort.
08:58 So you have dual-zone automatic climate control.
09:02 In addition to that, you have heated seats.
09:04 The seats should have massage function on them as well,
09:07 but perhaps shortages.
09:08 But in addition to that, they are electrically adjustable.
09:11 So you can go forwards, backwards,
09:13 backrest can go forwards, backwards.
09:15 You can lift the front, you can lift the back.
09:18 You can also adjust your bolster
09:20 and you have memory for the driver's seat as well.
09:23 Passenger seat is electrically adjustable as well.
09:25 I love the seats.
09:26 Oh, look at this, they are so cool.
09:28 So you've got this ribbing in the center.
09:31 You've got RS up the top there.
09:32 They hug you in beautifully as well,
09:34 and very comfortable for long distance drives.
09:36 Steering is both tilt and reach adjustable.
09:39 It is all manual.
09:40 And then on the reach test,
09:41 all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
09:44 So backseat of RS3.
09:46 Not a great deal of room here.
09:48 There is more room than the A45, which is good,
09:50 but yet knees are kind of nestled into the backseat there.
09:54 Not a great deal of toe room.
09:55 Headroom is okay, but if you're any taller,
09:57 you're gonna be rubbing up against the roof.
10:00 Down at the bottom here,
10:01 you have two USB-C slots for charging.
10:03 Air vents.
10:04 You have map pockets.
10:06 A center armrest here with two cup holders.
10:09 Bottle fits into there.
10:11 Maybe this is just a tiny bottle,
10:12 but it's gonna move around heaps
10:15 'cause there are teeth in there as well.
10:16 Can fit this inside the door too, should you so desire.
10:20 You have ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats
10:23 and three top tether points.
10:25 Now, what about our window test?
10:27 So it's auto up and down.
10:29 You are so close yet so far.
10:33 Good try anyway, Addy.
10:36 Okay, boot space.
10:37 Let's have a little shticky beak.
10:39 So power tailgate, yay.
10:41 Oh, that is small.
10:43 So under 300 liters of cargo space available there.
10:47 You got a 12-volt outlet just off to the side.
10:50 Safety kit under here.
10:52 A battery and a tyre repair kit.
10:54 There is really not much storage space there at all.
10:57 I'll show you what it looks like with our bags inside.
11:00 It's actually kind of expecting a bit more room
11:02 in there than that.
11:03 Wow.
11:05 Fair enough, kind of all fits in okay,
11:07 but it's pretty cramped.
11:10 I'll show you what it looks like
11:11 with the second row down as well.
11:13 When we get this stuff out of the way,
11:15 it actually gives you a little over 1100 liters of space.
11:19 So it is better, but still not remarkable.
11:21 So we have just hit the road in the RS3.
11:29 I am bouncing around a little bit.
11:30 Let me pop it in comfort.
11:32 There we go, that's better.
11:33 So this has adaptive damping, obviously.
11:35 Now, before I get into that, let's talk about the engine.
11:37 So I mentioned earlier on,
11:39 this is one of my favorite engines.
11:41 It is an absolute powerhouse
11:43 and just everything about it is cool.
11:45 It makes great noises.
11:46 It has stacks of punch.
11:48 And to me, it feels a little more,
11:50 well, a little, yeah,
11:51 a little more understressed than the A45,
11:54 given that that's a two liter
11:55 and this is a two and a half
11:56 with an extra cylinder as well.
11:58 So it produces just under 300 kilowatts of power
12:02 and 500 Newton meters of torque.
12:05 And that's all mated to a seven speed automatic transmission.
12:09 That's a dual clutch.
12:10 Not a fan of the transmission though.
12:12 So here in comfort mode,
12:13 just coming off the line,
12:17 I have to, it's a bit hard to explain,
12:19 but I have to kind of really get into the throttle
12:23 for it to do anything.
12:24 And then what happens is you overcompensate
12:26 by pushing it too hard and it lurches forward.
12:29 So it is just one of those frustrating
12:31 dual clutch gearbox tendencies,
12:33 and it can get a little frustrating at times, unfortunately,
12:36 but I guess it is what it is.
12:38 It is the cost you pay.
12:39 The end result of that though,
12:40 is even in comfort mode,
12:41 if you sort of get stuck into it,
12:43 it pins you back in the seat
12:46 and that noise is absolutely unreal.
12:49 So yeah, aside from the jerkiness at low speed,
12:51 it is actually a good gearbox
12:54 if you want to stick a whole bunch of power through it.
12:55 Now, Addy claims a combined economy
12:57 of just under nine liters per 100 Ks.
13:00 We are currently sitting on 11.2.
13:05 (laughs)
13:08 Yeah, so it is obviously much higher,
13:11 but I have obviously also been going for a fang
13:14 around our track here this morning.
13:15 So that has pushed it up a little bit.
13:17 And look, to be honest, that's actually not too bad.
13:18 If you're in the realm of V8 territory,
13:20 like well and truly in the realm of V8 territory
13:22 in terms of performance and acceleration,
13:24 I'm quite happy for it to be using more fuel
13:27 because that is where the fun factor comes out of this.
13:29 Now, just in addition to all of those engine specs,
13:32 because this has the Dynamic Plus package,
13:35 it will increase top speed from 250 to 290,
13:38 which I don't have enough room to test that out here today,
13:40 but pick an Autobahn, a long, nice, decent stretch,
13:43 and you would be absolutely hoofing along in this thing.
13:46 Okay, let's crank our speed up to 130.
13:52 This is the part of our review
13:54 where we test what this is like on a country road
13:57 with continuous undulations.
13:59 We call them the sine waves
14:01 because that's what they look like.
14:02 And these are designed to give us an idea
14:04 of what body control is like at overtaking speed
14:08 and the maximum speed limit here in Australia.
14:11 So we're in comfort mode at the moment.
14:13 Look, predictably, that is sitting pretty flat through there
14:17 so that's no drama.
14:18 I am having to speak up a lot though,
14:20 and that is because there is so much road noise
14:23 coming in through the cabin.
14:25 There is just so much tyre noise
14:27 coming in through those tyres,
14:28 and it is infiltrating the cabin,
14:30 especially on those coarse-chipped sections of road.
14:33 So yeah, that is probably something worth keeping in mind,
14:35 but it won't be the quietest place to be on the highway.
14:39 Now, I think it's time to go for a little fang.
14:40 So the annoying thing is the drive select button
14:42 is all the way down here,
14:43 and in there you have efficiency, comfort, auto, dynamic,
14:46 but you have three RS modes, RS individual, RS performance,
14:50 and RS torque rear, which I'll explain a little later on,
14:53 but I'm gonna go into RS individual,
14:55 which I've configured for my tastes,
14:58 and we'll see what it's like around our track here.
15:00 God, that noise is so intoxicating.
15:02 Holy shit.
15:08 It is sticking to the road like glue.
15:13 The way it's adding torque through those wheels
15:20 as we exit the corner is absolutely unreal.
15:24 Oh man, and these brakes are amazing.
15:27 So those carbon ceramic brakes up the front
15:29 really give this just another league of stopping power
15:33 with virtually no fade.
15:35 You would have to be going absolutely bonkers
15:37 to get fade out of those.
15:39 Wow, this is so fast.
15:42 Oh my God.
15:47 I barely have a chance here to look at the camera
15:52 because it is absolutely hauling.
15:54 So here comes our back straight,
15:55 I'll roll onto the throttle.
15:57 Grab the limiter there, but let's stay in this.
16:01 Wow.
16:02 Holy crap.
16:08 I think, I think point to point,
16:11 this is probably the fastest car we've driven here.
16:14 The way it piles on power and torque out of a corner
16:18 is absolutely next level.
16:21 It has virtually unlimited traction.
16:23 It is so cool.
16:24 So basically they've ditched the Haldex system here
16:27 for the all wheel drive setup.
16:29 And what they're using instead of the rear differential
16:31 is a twin clutch, twinster style system.
16:34 And the way that it works is you have two sets of clutches
16:36 that can divert up to 100% of torque
16:38 to either of the two wheels on the rear axle.
16:41 That allows you to do things like sending more torque
16:44 to the rear to give you better balance
16:45 and better torque vectoring
16:46 because it is a truly mechanical system.
16:49 But it also means if you do select this RS torque rear mode
16:53 and you switch stability control off,
16:55 when you do tip it in and slam the throttle down,
16:58 what it's actually doing is sending more torque
17:00 to the wheel that you're turning into.
17:02 That causes the rear end to step out
17:05 and then you can basically just feed the throttle in
17:07 and drift it nicely.
17:08 So it is a pretty cool setup.
17:10 And in my opinion, it works incredibly well here.
17:13 This is colossally quick and I was not expecting it.
17:16 The only downside is that when it is
17:18 in the full bonkers RS setting,
17:20 and the whole reason I set up RS individual
17:22 with a softer suspension setup is,
17:24 when you are in the full bonkers setting,
17:26 it is so firm through a corner.
17:28 It actually feels like the 845
17:30 where it kind of skips over the road
17:31 as you pile into a corner.
17:33 The setup that it's in now tapers that off a little bit
17:36 and gives you a bit more control over the car.
17:37 But yeah, I am genuinely blown away by this.
17:40 So let's do some zero to 100 in Audi claims,
17:47 zero to 100 in 3.8 seconds.
17:50 Let's see how we go up against the V-Box.
17:52 So I'm gonna put it into RS performance.
17:55 That already limits stability control.
17:57 And all I need to do is hold the foot on the brake,
17:59 foot on the throttle,
18:00 and then it will give us our zero to 100
18:04 with launch control.
18:06 And then I'll also go all the way through to 120
18:08 so I can see what our overtake speed is like.
18:10 So here we go.
18:12 God, that sounds good.
18:13 Here we go.
18:14 (car engine roaring)
18:17 (car engine roaring)
18:20 Oh, wow.
18:24 Oh, wow.
18:25 Oh, wow.
18:29 You can see my second and third chin shaking around there.
18:33 That is so cool.
18:35 Wow, 3.7 seconds, zero to 100.
18:37 So that's quicker than the claim,
18:39 which I think is pretty awesome.
18:40 And 80 to 120 in 2.4 seconds.
18:43 Wow, that is unreal.
18:46 It's probably one of the quickest cars we've tested.
18:49 80 to 120, I reckon.
18:50 That is stupidly good.
18:52 I bloody love that.
18:53 And I just love the fact that when you do put it
18:55 in that torque rear mode,
18:57 it can literally just become a drift pig.
18:59 It is just the ultimate little hot hatch.
19:02 I bloody love it.
19:03 And now it's time for our reverse test.
19:07 I've left it in RS performance mode.
19:09 Let's see how quick it is in reverse.
19:11 Here we go.
19:12 All right.
19:13 (car engine roaring)
19:16 It takes off really fast,
19:17 but typical sort of Volkswagen product,
19:20 speed limited to 30 Ks an hour in reverse.
19:23 Okay, so it is time to test the lane support systems
19:29 on our banked bowl.
19:31 So I'm gonna put this up to 70 Ks an hour,
19:36 and we will set the speed there.
19:38 And then I will also switch on the lane support system.
19:43 All right, that is now set on with lane guided.
19:47 So we're gonna test the three outer lanes
19:49 and see how well it performs here.
19:51 So it's doing really well in the bottom lane.
19:53 Keep in mind, you do have to have your hands on the wheel.
19:55 I've just, for the purpose of the demo,
19:57 just holding it very lightly to see how it performs.
19:59 So lane one is all good.
20:00 We'll jump over to our next lane.
20:02 Okay.
20:05 And that is now locked in.
20:08 It's actually doing a pretty good job.
20:11 It's keeping us away from that left-hand side lane.
20:14 Awesome, that's great.
20:15 Let's jump over to lane three,
20:16 see how it outperforms up here.
20:18 Now, some cars don't do all that well up here,
20:21 so I'll be interested to see if this is in the same boat.
20:24 Okay, it's all gone green.
20:25 I'll let go of the wheel.
20:27 Oh, it's not liking that.
20:28 We'll try that once more.
20:30 Okay, that is now locked in.
20:34 I'll gently let go of the wheel.
20:36 No, it's not liking that at all.
20:39 So it is a pass for lane one and two
20:42 and a fail for lane three.
20:44 So if you want to see how this car compares
20:46 to others that we've tested,
20:47 we've got a link in the description below there
20:49 that'll give you a bit of an insight into that.
20:51 Now let's talk visibility.
20:56 So I can see clearly down the front of the car there,
20:58 the wing mirrors are good, could be a little bit bigger,
21:00 but you do have that blind spot monitor built into them.
21:03 Visibility out the back isn't too bad.
21:05 It's a decent enough envelope there.
21:07 (car engine revving)
21:10 So the Audi RS3, this thing is so much fun.
21:15 It is colossally quick, especially point to point.
21:18 It is like next level.
21:19 You think to yourself, you're gonna need a big V8
21:21 and a big sedan to get fast point to point,
21:24 but it's all about something as nimble as this
21:26 that has this huge punch to it.
21:28 And then in addition to that,
21:29 they've actually just launched
21:30 like a higher performance version.
21:32 It'll do 300 kilometres an hour.
21:34 I mean, it's just pointingly insane.
21:37 Look, it is comfortable enough to drive as a daily,
21:39 but yeah, the tyre noise is crazy.
21:40 So if you are driving on the highway to visit someone,
21:43 probably gonna do your head
21:43 and you'll have to crank that audio up just a little bit.
21:46 But yeah, outside of that, it is an absolute smile maker
21:48 and I'd probably buy that over an 845 as well.
21:51 So let me know in the comment section below,
21:53 have you bought one of these?
21:54 Did you buy an 845 instead?
21:56 How's it going?
