Notre Dame Offense Has Been Too Inconsistent
Transcript
00:00 When you look at the past game, it tells a similar story.
00:06 I mean, just on raw numbers, Notre Dame's past game has been pretty good this year.
00:09 They ranked 20th in yards per attempt, 18th in yards per completion, 31st in touchdowns.
00:15 They ranked 21st in pass efficiency rating.
00:18 They ranked 30th in fewest sacks allowed per game.
00:22 That's on a per game basis.
00:23 So there have been some really good things this season, but it's just been such a change.
00:28 And I had an article today that kind of broke it down.
00:30 And, you know, when you look at Sam Hartman's first four games of the season, he averaged
00:35 265.3 yards per game, completed 71.1% of his passes and averaged 11.8 yards per attempt.
00:42 He had 13 touchdowns and no picks in the first four games.
00:46 In the last six games, however, he's only averaged 201.8 yards per game.
00:51 He's only completing 58.3% of his passes, and he's averaging only 7.2 yards per attempt
00:57 while throwing five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
01:00 So the overall numbers look good, but they don't tell the story of what the pass game
01:06 has been in recent weeks.
01:08 And so to me, getting this part of the game going is going to be important.
01:12 And we saw it get going a little bit against Pittsburgh, you know, where they were able
01:17 to make some big plays.
01:18 And we saw Chris Tyree make a great catch, and we saw Tobias Merriweather get open for
01:22 a big play.
01:23 And, you know, we saw some different things we liked.
01:25 But then we also saw, you know, Sam Hartman make some big mistakes in the pass game.
01:29 You know, the two interceptions were drive killers.
01:31 I've heard people say, "Oh, the offense struggled against Pittsburgh."
01:33 No, it didn't.
01:34 The offense moved up and down the field the entire game against Pittsburgh.
01:37 The problem was they got into the red zone or near the red zone twice, and Sam Hartman
01:42 threw two picks.
01:43 Once was a mistake from Rico Flores, once was a mistake from Sam.
01:46 And it was really those things that stalled the offense.
01:49 It wasn't, you know, play calling and all these other type of things that we like to
01:52 kind of go to when trying to blame, you know, find blame for where Notre Dame is having
01:58 the issues that they're having.
01:59 And to me, you know, it's going to come down to doing a better job, in my opinion, from
02:05 a game planning standpoint, which I'll get into here in a little bit.
02:08 But then the execution's got to get better, which means the preparation has got to get
02:11 better.
02:12 That's what execution means to me.
02:13 When a coach says that execution isn't good, I think more often than not, what I hear is
02:17 we didn't do a good job in preparation and coming into the game to get them ready to
02:21 execute at a high level.
02:22 That's what it means to me, and that's what it should mean anyway.
02:25 And so that still goes down to being a bit of a coaching issue, although at the end of
02:28 the day, there are times when the players just got to make plays.
02:32 Yeah.
