GR Yaris v Supra, it's the comparison you never asked for. But, because we love shooting a CarExpert Dragparison, we wanted to compare the entire Toyota GR range (GR stands for Gazoo Racing), which consists currently of the 2021 Toyota GR Yaris and the 2020 Toyota GR Supra.

We just did a review of the GR Yaris (you can watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKa9KcAyQk8 ) and we have previously shot a video of the Supra in this video, which is actually my car (you can watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bppJcYFLSc8 ).

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. So it's time for another Car Expert Dragparison.
00:03 If you don't know what a dragparison is, it's where we do a comparison at a drag strip.
00:07 Done a whole bunch of these before and they are so much fun to produce.
00:09 Now, this one is a little bit different because yes, we're not at a drag strip.
00:13 And also, they're not really comparable cars.
00:15 They're kind of from the same mother but have different fathers.
00:18 So it is the Toyota GR Yaris, which is brand new, one of the most anticipated car launches of this year,
00:24 plus the Toyota GR Supra, so the one that they did in collaboration with BMW.
00:29 And by the way, that's my car, you can see because of the stupid number plate and the different wheels.
00:34 Today, we're going to compare these two.
00:35 It's not going to be a direct comparison, but we just wanted to see now that Toyota has a complete GR family, Gazoo Racing.
00:42 Let's see what they've done and how these cars go.
00:44 So today, we'll do some 0-100 testings, an exhaust comparison, and also a drag race between the two to see just how quick the all-new GR Yaris is.
00:53 Now, if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this dragparison, you can use the time codes up on the screen there.
00:58 Or if you're on YouTube, just scroll down and use the chapters below.
01:01 And if you haven't done so already, make sure you hit subscribe and press the bell icon.
01:05 That's going to tell you every single time we check out a sibling rivalry.
01:08 Okay, let's start over here.
01:10 This is the GR Yaris engine.
01:12 I know, it's not overly exciting, but here's some news.
01:15 That is the most powerful three-cylinder production engine in the world.
01:19 So that means it pumps out 200 kilowatts of power and 370 newton-meters of torque.
01:25 It's a 1.6-litre engine, and that's impressive because this weighs barely anything.
01:28 It's just under 1300 kilograms.
01:30 Six-speed manual only, so no automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive only as well.
01:35 So no front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, but it can vary the torque split as it drives.
01:39 So it is a fairly complex setup.
01:41 So I'll be keen to see how this goes when we put it up against our stopwatch.
01:43 So let's go over to the Supra.
01:45 Okay, look at that.
01:48 That may look familiar to you BMW people because it is BMW's B58 engine.
01:53 It is a 3-litre inline six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
01:58 Fits nicely under that bonnet.
02:00 In fact, so nicely, I reckon they'll be able to fit the M3 engine under there at some point,
02:04 and I'm looking forward to that when that happens.
02:06 This one, on the other hand, produces 250 kilowatts of power and 500 newton-meters of torque.
02:11 And unlike the Yaris, this is only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission,
02:16 and it's also just rear-wheel drive with an electronic locking rear differential.
02:20 And in terms of weight, this weighs just under 1500 kilos.
02:23 So it is slightly heavier than the Yaris, but it doesn't have a complex all-wheel drive system weighing it down.
02:28 Okay, let's talk design and we'll kick off with the Yaris.
02:31 Now, this isn't just a normal Yaris.
02:34 Let me quickly explain why this one is so special.
02:36 So this started off life as a normal Yaris,
02:39 but they needed a homologation car for the Rally Series.
02:42 And to do that, you have to produce 25,000 of them,
02:45 and it needs to resemble the Rally car in some way.
02:47 And if you've seen the Yaris, that definitely doesn't.
02:50 So they came up with this, which sits on its own platform, which is crazy.
02:53 So the front end is regular Yaris.
02:55 The rest of it, though, is shared between the C-HR and the Corolla,
02:59 and it has a whole number of other differences that I'll walk you through in just a second.
03:02 But have a look at this front end.
03:03 That is a massive, massive mouth, and that is to get in as much air as you can into that super-powerful three-cylinder engine.
03:11 And if we jump around to the side, actually, before we do that, you can see all these vents are kind of blocked off.
03:16 I have a feeling that down the track, we might see a more powerful version of this.
03:19 So they might pop those open, and kind of like the Supra, where they'd come out, and you can actually put things on.
03:25 Tuners are going to have a field day with that sort of stuff.
03:27 Jump around to the side here.
03:29 Now, this is the impressive part about the brakes.
03:30 They are Whoppers, 356-millimeter rotors.
03:33 They're slotted, and they also have four-piston calipers.
03:36 You've got an 18-inch alloy wheel.
03:37 That looks really cool as well.
03:38 There is a performance/track version of this car called the Rallye that is coming to Australia.
03:43 That's going to have lightweight wheels, different brake calipers, a front and rear locking diff,
03:47 and a few other sort of bits and pieces that are extra.
03:49 This is just the standard car.
03:51 GR badge there, so you can tell this Yaris aside from others.
03:54 Have a look at the roof.
03:55 I bet you never thought you'd see a Yaris with a carbon fiber roof.
03:58 This helps save around 3.5 kilograms.
04:01 The roofline also sits 95 millimeters lower than a standard Yaris.
04:04 So you can see the dimensions just look completely different.
04:07 And it actually shows over here.
04:08 Have a look at these wheel arches.
04:10 They are huge haunches.
04:11 They just pop out nicely.
04:13 And then in terms of the dimensional differences between this and a standard Yaris,
04:16 it's 55 millimeters longer than a standard Yaris, 60 millimeters wider, and 45 millimeters lower.
04:22 So moving on to the Supra.
04:24 I think most of you know the platform here is shared with the BMW Z4.
04:28 But what a lot of people don't know, and you can actually watch the video we recorded on my car
04:32 and why I bought it and all that sort of stuff up there,
04:34 but a lot of people don't know that Toyota was actually involved from the inception of this platform.
04:39 So they've had a lot to do with the engineering work.
04:41 Yes, it uses a BMW engine and some interior parts,
04:44 but there is a Toyota engineer at heart in there somewhere.
04:48 So in terms of the design, you've got all your standard air vents.
04:50 You've got a big gaping one in there to keep it cool and then air vents off to the side.
04:53 But it is worth noting that there are some fake vents on this car.
04:57 But as we've seen with the aftermarket, a lot of aftermarket tuners have gone and bumped those air vents out
05:02 and there is space in there to create additional cooling as well.
05:05 So they have thought about that in the long run.
05:07 We'll jump around here to the side and have a look at the wheels.
05:09 So these are aftermarket wheels.
05:11 They aren't the standard wheels, but the tire size is the same.
05:13 So 255 millimeters at the front, 275 millimeters at the rear,
05:18 and this is a 19-inch alloy wheel.
05:20 And then in terms of braking, you have a 348-mil rotor up front with a four-piston caliper.
05:25 There's one of those fake vents that I mentioned.
05:27 Now come around to the rear.
05:28 Now, this is my favorite angle around the rear
05:30 because you can see those massively wide wheel arches there that contain those 275-mil wide tires
05:36 and then these cool LED taillights plus the bimodal exhausts.
05:40 Okay, so it is time to hear some exhaust sound.
05:43 Now, both of these cars have been warmed up and we're going to do this stationary and moving as well.
05:47 Scott, you're in the car. Fire it up. Pop it into sport mode and let's have a listen.
05:51 It's actually pretty quiet.
06:00 Okay, so first stop when you get a GR Yaris is going to be an exhaust.
06:04 Let's see what it sounds like once it's moving.
06:06 (engine revving)
06:08 Okay, what about the Supra? It's got three more cylinders.
06:17 Let's have a listen. Fire it up, Scott.
06:19 Now, this is in sport mode. Give it a rev.
06:22 That sounds awesome.
06:29 I've never actually sat behind my car and listened to it.
06:31 Okay, let's see what it sounds like once it's moving.
06:33 (engine revving)
06:35 Okay, so we are inside Bay, my Supra.
06:47 This is what we're going to start our drag parison with.
06:50 I'm going to do 0-100 in this first.
06:52 It is slightly uphill here, so I guess that is just something to keep in mind.
06:57 This time is probably going to be a little bit slower than the official claim,
06:59 but it should give you an idea of how we go.
07:01 So first time around, I'm just going to use sport mode with stability control kept on.
07:05 Now, when I did this just before when I was practicing,
07:07 I left a big old set of skid marks on the road here.
07:11 So, yeah, I'm going to have to be a little sensitive with this.
07:13 But yeah, sport mode first, stability control on.
07:16 Let's set a baseline time for 0-100.
07:18 So all I'm going to do is just load it up a little bit
07:21 and then just slam the throttle down.
07:22 A little bit of wheel slip.
07:31 There's 100. 4.6 seconds.
07:33 Okay, so the official figure is 4.3 seconds.
07:37 So we're just a little bit off that time,
07:39 but I suspect there is still a little bit more in it.
07:42 Okay, let's give this another try.
07:43 So this time I'll try it with launch control.
07:45 It is incredibly temperamental.
07:46 So you press the stability control button once, it puts it into a traction mode
07:51 and then what you're meant to do is foot hard on the brake,
07:54 foot on the throttle down to the kickdown,
07:56 and then it comes up saying launch control active.
07:58 And it lets you just have a little bit of wheel slip as you get along.
08:01 So I'm going to try and activate that now.
08:02 If I can't activate it, I'll just let it go with just limited stability on.
08:06 Okay, there's launch control active.
08:08 This is going to be slow.
08:16 4.9 seconds.
08:20 Yeah, you see what I mean? It just let the wheels slip too much.
08:23 It's not a very good launch control program.
08:25 Okay, let's try that again.
08:27 This time I'll try and be a little more aggressive with it.
08:29 Here we go.
08:30 There it is.
08:33 That's better.
08:34 Still holding.
08:36 It's still torque limiting me there.
08:38 That's really annoying. 5.1 seconds.
08:40 Yeah, it was just torque limiting me off the line.
08:42 It was just, I could feel full throttle.
08:44 It just wasn't giving me everything.
08:45 So I'm going to try this once more without launch control
08:48 and we'll just see if we can get the final good time out of it.
08:50 Does sound good though, just as I'm returning here.
08:56 Giving a little squeeze, a bit of a crack and a pop on the overrun.
08:59 Yeah, I still really like this car.
09:03 Okay, so like I said, no launch control this time.
09:06 I'll just try and walk it off the line.
09:07 It'll probably have a little bit of wheel slip,
09:09 but I've got it in that limited traction mode.
09:11 Let's see how we go.
09:13 Felt okay.
09:20 Still not amazing though. 4.7 seconds.
09:26 Yeah, so look a little bit off the time I was hoping for,
09:29 but it is a little bit uphill.
09:30 Maybe that's got something to do with it.
09:31 But yeah, it's just notoriously hard to launch.
09:33 There's so much torque there and it either just gives you everything or nothing.
09:38 You sort of never really get in anything in between
09:40 that lets you sort of get off the line nice and clean.
09:42 Okay, so we are inside the GR Yaris.
09:45 Now the official 0 to 100 time is 5.2 seconds.
09:49 I want to see how close I can get to that.
09:51 But there is a caveat that I want to point out really quickly.
09:53 This isn't actually a press car.
09:55 This is a customer's car.
09:56 It's from the legends at Tuners Edge.
09:59 Now these guys are tuning up the Yaris GR
10:01 and they have one of the first customer cars in Australia.
10:03 They've very nicely loaned us this.
10:05 And by the way, if you want to see this on the dyno
10:07 plus some of the work they're going to be doing to it,
10:09 click up here to watch that video.
10:11 So I'm not going to go too hard with this,
10:13 but I will reveal the times that the owners have actually achieved
10:16 after sort of fairly brutally launching it.
10:18 So let's give this a shot.
10:19 First up, we're going to put it into sport mode,
10:21 but leave stability control on for our first run.
10:24 Now the owner of this car has told me that he launches it from some astronomical RPM,
10:28 but I genuinely don't want to break the car.
10:29 So let's just see how we go.
10:31 I'll try from around sort of 3,000 with a slight clutch slip.
10:35 Here we go.
10:36 God, that is quick.
10:45 That is seriously impressive.
10:52 I enjoyed that.
10:53 Wow, okay, 5.4 seconds.
10:55 That is straight out of the box, just in sport mode.
10:58 Right, let's try that again.
10:59 This time around, sport mode, stability control off.
11:02 So it's a push of that button.
11:03 It comes up with all the messages.
11:04 Now I'm going to raise the RPM here a little bit
11:06 because it did bog down out there at the start.
11:08 So I think it actually has a little bit more latitude there before it slips.
11:12 Let's go up to about 4,000.
11:15 Kind of holds it there, which is good.
11:16 Let the clutch out a little bit.
11:18 Oh, it feels better.
11:23 Oh, far out.
11:27 This thing is quick.
11:30 Okay, 5.4 seconds again.
11:33 Okay, this time around it is track mode.
11:35 I'm going to keep stability control up, but dial up the revs a little bit more.
11:39 And we'll see if we can just get a touch more out of it.
11:42 Okay, here we go.
11:43 I'll have it up just over 4,000 RPM.
11:47 [engine revving]
11:50 [tires squealing]
11:52 That felt good.
11:53 [engine revving]
11:58 Whoa, okay.
12:00 All right, 5.7 seconds.
12:02 That one was even slower.
12:03 So it looks like sport mode is actually the mode that you want to go for.
12:06 Okay, it is time for the sibling rival in the grudge match.
12:10 It is the Supra up against the Yaris, both GR cars.
12:14 Obviously the Supra is going to win, but I'm just curious to see how close it is.
12:17 I think this will have it off the line, but we'll see how close they are down the line.
12:21 Eagle's going to start us off.
12:22 So let's give this a crack.
12:24 Three, two, one, go.
12:27 [engine revving]
12:30 Oh, I got off the line a little early.
12:34 Oh, he's catching me.
12:35 Come on, let's go.
12:38 140, 150.
12:40 There goes the Supra.
12:41 160.
12:43 Just over the line.
12:45 I tell you what, this car is colossally quick.
12:49 All right, let's see how we went.
12:50 So 0 to 100 in 5.4.
12:53 So that was a really good launch.
12:54 And then we'll have a look at our quarter mile time.
12:57 13.5 seconds at 169 kilometers an hour.
13:02 Seriously quick.
13:03 Let's see how Scott went.
13:04 Scott, how did you go?
13:05 12.8 for the quarter mile at 180.4 k's an hour.
13:09 Okay, that is quick.
13:11 I'm proud of it.
13:13 It's quick.
13:14 The guy that owns this, he's actually done his own testing
13:17 before they started doing tuning.
13:19 He's a drag racer, so he knows how to properly launch it.
13:22 And he's more willing to be a little more
13:23 aggressive with the car.
13:24 But he has managed a sub 5 second 0
13:28 to 100 kilometer an hour time.
13:30 Oh, that is impressive stuff.
13:32 So this is normally the point where
13:33 we would do the brake test between the two cars.
13:36 But look, it's not my car.
13:37 I don't want to take the piss.
13:38 They've loaned us this car, which
13:40 we're really grateful for.
13:41 And I don't think I'd want to watch a video where
13:43 some bloke was just smashing the brake pedal on my car.
13:46 We might just wait till we get an official press
13:47 car from Toyota.
13:48 And I think I'll feel a little bit better
13:50 then when I know that it's not someone's actual car.
13:52 So that is another car expert drag parison done.
13:54 Whenever we finish these, I always
13:56 have a big smile on my face.
13:57 And that's always a good thing because cars are so much fun.
14:00 Especially these two.
14:01 Still absolutely love that.
14:03 That has blown me away.
14:04 I was not expecting them to be close at all.
14:06 They're completely different cars.
14:07 They're completely different price brackets.
14:09 But the smile that thing puts on your face
14:11 and how much it keeps up with that off the line,
14:13 even down the quarter mile, there's
14:15 not that much of a difference.
14:16 So let me know in the comments section below.
14:18 Were you surprised with the results?
14:20 Did you think one would be faster than the other?
14:22 Yes, in the hands of a professional and someone
14:24 that kind of wants to be a little more abusive to their car.
14:27 That thing will go sub five seconds, zero to 100,
14:29 which I think is pretty awesome.
14:30 So let me know in the comments section below.
14:32 Have you bought a Supra or a GR Yaris?
14:34 If you have, let me know what you think of it so far.
14:36 Have you done anything fun with it?
14:37 What kind of mods have you done to it,
14:38 especially to these?
14:39 I think they're about to get some absolute power out
14:41 of these once the tuners get hold of them.
14:43 And big thank you to Tuners Edge as well
14:45 for letting us loan that car.
14:46 Now, if you haven't done so already,
14:47 I would love it if you could share this video,
14:49 hit the Like button, and don't forget to subscribe and press
14:51 the bell icon, because that'll tell you every single time we
14:54 do a smile-inducing drag parison.
14:56 But until next time, take it easy.
