00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Now, the Toyota Supra, it is a seriously controversial car, but this is going to be slightly
00:06 different because that's my car.
00:07 I bought the Toyota Supra, and today we're talking about the five main reasons I put
00:12 my money behind that car, and then we're going to do the same thing with the other cars I
00:15 own as well, because that's what you guys are wanting.
00:18 Everyone keeps asking me about this, and they want to find out a bit more about it, and
00:21 what it's actually like to live with.
00:22 So I'm looking forward to bringing that to you.
00:24 Now on top of that as well, I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone that
00:27 has been watching our videos and getting involved on social media as well, commenting.
00:32 The subscriber count is amazing.
00:34 We weren't expecting it to go as well as it has, so a big thank you to everyone who has
00:38 become a part of the Car Expert family, as cheesy as that sounds.
00:42 Today we're going to do things a little bit differently.
00:44 We've split this video into two.
00:45 The first half is going to be the five main reasons I bought the car, and the second half
00:50 is a bit of a Q&A, and that's with the questions that you guys have sent through on Instagram
00:55 just before we started filming this.
00:57 If you have any other questions, you can leave them in the comments below, or hit me up on
01:00 social, and if there's enough comments there, we're going to do a completely separate video,
01:04 like a Q&A style video as well.
01:06 So yeah, we'll try it out, see how it all works.
01:09 Let's get cracking.
01:11 Let's kick off with reason number one.
01:13 So I bought the Supra because of the way that it handles on the track.
01:16 I had the chance to drive this car as a prototype all the way back in 2018 at a track called
01:22 Jarama.
01:23 It's just outside Madrid.
01:25 All the cars were all camoed, but you kind of got a good idea of what they looked like.
01:28 They were still finishing up things like exhaust, and I think the stability control tune as
01:33 well.
01:34 I was there with my previous employer, which some of you may know.
01:37 But yeah, I remember driving it going, "Holy crap, this car is an absolute missile."
01:43 When it got to like third gear, it unleashed all of its torque, pinned you back in the
01:47 seat.
01:48 The way that it handled the racetrack was really cool, and I love the noise as well,
01:52 because one of the reasons that I'll get to in a sec is the engine, and the engine in
01:56 this car sounds absolutely sensational.
01:58 So that is the first reason.
02:05 The way that it handles on the track, and I just loved the way that it rode on the road
02:10 as well, because that's where Toyota's ride and handling tune actually came in above and
02:15 beyond what BMW had done.
02:17 So that meant that it was compliant like a Toyota, but kind of drove like a BMW.
02:21 Reason number two, I love the fact that it's so controversial.
02:24 In the lead up to the car being announced and the concept coming through, I love the
02:28 fact that everyone was getting their knickers in a twist about how different it was to the
02:32 last generation of Supra.
02:34 Now when I was growing up, the last generation of Supra was nice, but it wasn't what people
02:38 picture in their heads as a Supra.
02:41 People picture 1,000 horsepower drag cars, drift machines.
02:45 A standard Supra was fast, but it was more a Grand Tourer.
02:48 It wasn't some ridiculous missile that competed with the GTR, and when this car came out and
02:54 the specs came out, everyone was jumping up and down about how slow it is, how it doesn't
02:58 compete with the GTR.
02:59 Well, I don't think that was ever the plan.
03:02 It was never meant to do that.
03:03 So I just love the fact that it caused a lot of controversy, and that certainly followed
03:07 through to ownership as well, because I found that people still either love or hate the
03:12 car.
03:13 There's really no in-between, and I find that fascinating.
03:14 But the thing that brings everyone together is the design.
03:17 Some people that don't like the car still kind of think it looks good, and people who
03:20 don't know anything about cars still think it looks good.
03:24 And one of the things I learnt when we drove the prototype was that Toyota was in fact
03:28 involved in this process from ground up.
03:30 It wasn't like Toyota came along and said to BMW, "Okay, you've done the Z4, we're going
03:35 to take the keys now and just change a few things."
03:37 Toyota was actually there from the very early stages of dimensions of the car, picking the
03:42 right engine for the car as well, because remember, Toyota doesn't actually have an
03:45 engine to put in this car.
03:47 So that's where all this started for them, and it also meant that they could really get
03:50 the handling and also the ride right, which only really Toyota could do if they did it
03:55 all from the very beginning.
03:56 But yeah, it was more just that the car was controversial and had to be good to live up
04:01 to that super name, and I think they've absolutely nailed it in terms of the entire package.
04:05 Okay, reason number three, it's the engine.
04:08 This is one of my favourite engines ever.
04:11 I love the M140i, and this really follows on from that with the B58.
04:16 It's a three-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
04:21 It's such a smooth engine.
04:23 BMW has really just perfected this, put their own twist on it and just given it a real life
04:29 of its own.
04:30 And I also love the fact that it's not mated to a dual-clutch gearbox.
04:32 If you've watched some of our other car reviews, I'm not a huge fan of dual-clutches.
04:36 Often we're testing them in buzz boxes and economy hatches, and they only use a dual-clutch
04:41 to save fuel and for fuel efficiency.
04:44 When you stick it into a sports car, if it's not a good one, it kind of kills the day-to-day
04:47 driving experience.
04:48 This, on the other hand, the eight-speed automatic from ZF is really smooth.
04:52 It's not that smooth when you're coming to a stop, but the rest of the actions are really
04:56 smooth.
04:57 The gear shifts are super fast, it goes down gears really quickly.
04:59 It's quite an intuitive, sporty gearbox, and it works sensationally with this engine.
05:03 So that is the main thing that really gels this car together.
05:08 Now, one question that a lot of people asked was, "What was I looking at instead of this?"
05:13 And this is how weird car people are.
05:15 You might think to yourself, "Okay, this car's about $100,000.
05:17 I would have been looking at cars around this price point."
05:19 Well, I wasn't.
05:20 I didn't really have a price bracket to work with.
05:22 I just wanted something fun to drive that my wife wouldn't want to drive, and she never
05:27 drives this.
05:28 I really wanted something that nailed that brief.
05:30 I had a look at a Cayman GT4, a second-hand one.
05:33 They were holding their value well, so I thought from a resale perspective that would be pretty
05:36 good.
05:37 Couldn't find the right one, and it wasn't going to be super practical.
05:40 It was a manual only, which I love manuals, but if my wife ever needed to drive it, that
05:45 wasn't really going to work.
05:46 The second car I looked at was an Australian car, the HSV GTSR W1.
05:50 I got to the point of almost buying one.
05:52 Basically, I found a pilot car, one of, I think, four pilot cars they built.
05:57 So it was based on a 2015 GTS that they then retrofitted with the LS engine that they use
06:02 in the W1.
06:03 Unfortunately, the car was sold before I could get to it, and all the new examples were just
06:07 astronomically priced, and I just couldn't justify paying that kind of money for a car
06:12 that I knew would settle in price eventually.
06:13 And then, of course, I looked at the natural options, the BMW M2 and the M2 Comp.
06:17 M2 I like, but it was probably a little soft around the edges.
06:20 M2 Comp came out, but there was a lot of them.
06:23 They weren't very rare, so I thought, "Okay, what if I wait for the M2 CS?"
06:27 That was still going to be a little while away.
06:29 That's only just sort of landed in Australia, or will be landing in Australia soon.
06:33 That's pretty expensive for what it is, and then BMW has a habit of just bringing things
06:36 out above it as well, and you'll hear when we do the things I don't like about this car,
06:41 which will be a separate video, one of the things that's kind of irritated me with Toyota,
06:44 but we'll get to that later on.
06:45 But that gives you an insight into the other cars I was looking at as well, but it really
06:49 is the engine that sold me on this car ultimately.
06:51 Okay, let's jump to reason number four.
06:54 As you know from our other videos, I'm a bit of a tech buff.
06:57 I love technology in cars, and I love iDrive.
07:00 iDrive is one of my favourite infotainment systems in a car, so when Toyota said they
07:04 were teaming up with BMW to do the Supra, of course that meant we were getting iDrive,
07:07 and they finally confirmed it.
07:09 I thought, "Oh, thank God, it means I don't have to have a Toyota infotainment system."
07:13 I get this instead, which is a colour touchscreen with iDrive.
07:16 I get a screen here in front of me, a heads-up display.
07:19 It's all really easy to use.
07:21 The voice recognition is great.
07:22 Wireless phone charging.
07:24 It really is just a complete package.
07:26 It is let down though by a few things, and again, I'm going to go through this when we
07:29 talk about the things I don't like about this car, but for some reason here in Australia,
07:33 Toyota's skipped on being able to do remote services.
07:36 That means I don't get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
07:37 I don't get traffic on the nav system, which I think is just absolute bullshit, so that
07:41 is really disappointing, but from a tech package, this car has everything that you need.
07:45 So it's not like you're getting a sports car that's limited on tech.
07:48 It's really functional, very easy to use, and because it's a BMW, they're kind of working
07:52 on these systems all the time, so you're getting software upgrades as it goes.
07:55 So yeah, absolutely love the tech package in the Supra.
07:59 Reason number five why I bought the Supra.
08:01 It's something that has evolved since I've owned it, but the main sort of reasoning behind
08:05 it was when we drove it in Spain as a prototype, I could not believe how many heads the car
08:09 was turning, and I'm not buying a car because I want people to look at me, but it helps
08:13 that the car gets attention, whether people love it or hate it, and I love talking about
08:17 cars to people, so the fact that people are stopping me all the time to talk about it,
08:21 I love sort of being able to tell them, get them to sit inside the car, get them to experience
08:25 it, and that all sort of started when we did that prototype drive because initially I thought
08:30 it could have been just the camouflage, but a lot of people were interested in the car,
08:34 and they're all like speaking Spanish at me when we were driving, and I'm like, I don't
08:37 know what to tell you.
08:38 The whole interior was still covered up, but yeah, they absolutely loved it, and that has
08:42 evolved since I bought the car to the point now where it is turning so many heads, more
08:47 than any supercar I've ever driven.
08:49 This turns more heads, guaranteed, and I think it's partly the colour.
08:52 I've got Nürburgring grey, which is like a matte finish.
08:55 It's a limited global supply of these cars, and certainly limited in Australia.
08:59 You only get 350 in total for the first 12 months.
09:02 So yeah, the car itself is quite limited in that sense, and it just gets attention everywhere
09:07 that it goes, even from people that don't like cars.
09:09 My wife, parents, all these people that don't like cars just absolutely love the way that
09:13 it looks.
09:14 Okay, it is time to answer some of your Instagram questions.
09:17 Yesterday I put this up on Instagram, and we got a stack of questions here, and I've
09:22 picked my six favourite ones.
09:24 I'm going to start with this one here from Igor Solomon, who is coincidentally our cameraman,
09:29 and I think he just wanted to include this video clip.
09:31 So his question was, "Dude, is that a Supra?"
09:37 Haha.
09:38 Cheesyeggs26, "How did you make it through the lottery?
09:43 Any special favours?"
09:44 Okay, so the question there relates to the way this car was allocated in Australia, because
09:49 we only got 300, initially 300 cars that expanded to 350.
09:54 They had to basically set up a lottery system, and they didn't want people gaming the system,
09:58 because in the past when there has been limited edition cars in Australia, people would buy
10:02 two, three, and then basically resell them immediately after.
10:06 So to prevent that from happening, they had a setup that basically at a certain time,
10:11 the gates opened, and you had to give a deposit.
10:13 The deposit was $1000, and you had to link it to your driver's licence.
10:17 So that meant that you couldn't go and register six different cars, because you would only
10:21 get one allocation for your driver's licence.
10:24 The lottery was then sorted, and you have to give them your preferences, either first
10:28 or second, and my first preference was actually the Nürburgring, which is this matte colour
10:32 with the alcantara interior.
10:34 Somehow I made it through the lottery and won that, and I had no assistance from anyone
10:39 at Toyota, it just happened.
10:40 So I was lucky enough to get in there straight away, and I actually filmed this clip of me
10:44 doing it at the time.
10:46 So you can see how stressful it was.
10:48 We were out doing a shoot somewhere, and basically I was just sitting there with my laptop trying
10:51 to get through with my credit card, and finally got in there.
10:54 So I was really happy to make that.
10:56 I then got a call from Toyota's concierge.
10:58 They had a dedicated person that would allocate cars to people, and then also follow through
11:02 the whole process with them.
11:04 So I got my first preference, and was extremely happy with it.
11:08 Next question from Mickey Hoog.
11:10 If the spot where the cup holders are full, can you put drinks in the door bins?
11:14 That's a good question.
11:16 So I've got a cup in the cup holder.
11:18 If that's full, does it fit in the door bins?
11:19 If you come around here Igor, you will see that the answer is no.
11:24 Unless you're drinking out of like a goon bottle or something that you can cram into
11:29 the door, you're not going to be able to fit anything in the door bins, which is interesting.
11:33 I've never actually really noticed that.
11:35 I've only ever had cups in the car.
11:37 OK, next question from Berealswani.
11:40 Better track driver at the limit, Toyota Supra or BMW M2 Comp?
11:44 OK, so based on my experience having driven both of these cars on the track now, the M2
11:48 Comp edition is far more track focused and is a better weapon on the track.
11:53 The engine is sharper than this.
11:55 It's better tuned for track work as well, and it's a little more dynamic.
11:58 This is quite soft even in the sports setting as you throw it around on a racetrack.
12:02 So that's worth keeping in mind.
12:04 This is more an everyday car whereas the M2 Comp has that edgier track experience to it.
12:10 Question here from, and I'm sorry if I don't pronounce this right, Hans Pratama 96.
12:15 Can you change the fake air vents to real ones?
12:18 So let me show you something here.
12:21 This is one of the air vents on the side, right?
12:23 So you can see that's clearly fake.
12:25 It's not real.
12:26 It's just completely filled in.
12:27 But if I crack this open, and Eagle, come around this side, you can see behind here
12:35 that that air vent actually sits in behind there.
12:38 If you wanted to, you could cut this section out and have that as a functional air vent.
12:42 The whole reason that is closed off is more just for emissions.
12:45 It means that they can have a better fuel economy figure for this car because you don't
12:48 have air escaping.
12:49 You can retain heat inside there.
12:51 But you can see that they have built this for modifications.
12:55 So they have holes here and on top of the suspension mounts for strut tower braces,
12:59 and people are already doing aftermarket kits for those things as well.
13:02 Okay, last question from, Napsy 91.
13:05 What made you change the wheels?
13:06 Not dissing, just curious.
13:08 Well, to be honest, I actually don't really like them.
13:10 I think they look a little bit goofy on the car.
13:12 They're kind of a bit small.
13:14 The backstory to these is the wheels, they're Yokohama Advan GTs and they're sitting on
13:19 AD08 tyres.
13:21 These wheels were actually red and these were attached to a car at the World Time Attack
13:27 Challenge in Sydney.
13:28 They were actually attached to another Supra that was doing drift demonstrations.
13:31 They were getting rid of them and I thought, well, I wouldn't mind having another set of
13:33 wheels and tyres for track days.
13:35 So I bought these, stripped all the red stuff off them.
13:38 These tyres have been fantastic, but never really had a chance to do a track day because
13:42 of all this COVID stuff that popped up.
13:43 So they're yet to experience a track day, but initially I can immediately feel that
13:48 they have stacks more grip and I get a lot more traction out of the car as well.
13:52 But I just don't really like the look of these.
13:54 From side on, they look a little bit weird.
13:55 Let me know in the comments below whether you think they suit the car.
13:58 I've kept the original wheels as well, so I can stick those back on when I'm done stuffing
14:02 around.
14:03 That is all we're going to have time for because we still have to finish filming that car over
14:06 there, which is the other car we're reviewing this week.
14:08 Let us know if you've enjoyed this format.
14:10 I don't know if this works.
14:11 I just sort of shot it a little guerrilla style.
14:13 And if you have enjoyed it, we'll roll this out for the rest of the cars that I own and
14:18 then also do a whole lot more content on this car as well.
14:21 And with the Q&A, we need as many questions as we can.
14:23 So leave them in the comments below and also send me some through social media and stuff
14:27 like that.
14:28 And then on top of that, if you haven't done so already, please hit the subscribe button.
14:31 Feel free to share this video if you found it interesting.
14:33 Press the like button as well.
14:35 And the bell icon is going to tell you every single time we post a new video.
14:38 And I look forward to bringing you more content on this and in this format as well if you've
14:42 enjoyed it.
14:43 But until next time, drive safely.
