The first round of the Campeonato Gaúcho de Motovelocidade, held at the Autódromo Internacional de Guaporé, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, on Sunday 15 April 2012, was marred by an accident that resulted in the death of a man and two others injured.
Nine Pro-riders started the fourth Superbike heat of the meeting. On the 4th of 15 laps, Willian Onzi was involved in a three-bike accident near the end of the main straight, while dicing for the third place with competitors Joniran Saling #121 of Santa Catarina, and Mariano Spolier #77 of Novo Hamburgo. Suddenly Spolier signaled with his hand that he was reducing his speedin consequence of engine trouble. Because of the high speed, Saling who closely followed him failed to swerve and crashed into Mariano Spolier's bike. Trying to avoid them, Willian Onzi smashed against the wrecks at about 250 km/h, being thrown with his BMW #111 into air and landing tens of meters ahead, near the Um turn.
Willian Onzi suffered extensive injuries and died before the emergency crews reached him. Mariano Spolier sustained a broken feet, and also Joniran Saling was slightly injured in the accident. The race was immediately stopped after the tragedy and the final classification was taken by the fourth lap, no points were assigned.
An experienced rider from Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Willian Onzi, 32, took part in the Campeonato Gaúcho de Motovelocidade and also in the National series since 2004. In 2010 Onzi was vice-Champion of his state championship, then he quit racing for a year and returned only in 2012. The Guaporé race was his first outing of the season.
