Even though it looks big, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade is slightly shorter than the Mazda CX-9. But, unlike the CX-9, Hyundai has done an excellent job packaging the Palisade in terms of interior room and space. Paul Maric reviews the Hyundai Palisade Highlander in diesel trim to see if it's any good!

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 Now, just when you thought grills couldn't get any bigger, well, Hyundai thought they
00:04 would try and outdo everyone with this here.
00:06 It's the Palisade.
00:07 It's been out for a little while now, but it's new to Australia, and it brings with
00:11 it a whopper of a grill.
00:12 This one here is the top specification Highlander.
00:14 It's priced at 75 grand, but if this is a bit too much, the whole range kicks off with
00:19 an entry-level V6 for $60,000.
00:21 So there are a few different options there.
00:24 This competes with things like the Mazda CX-9, the Nissan Pathfinder, and to a degree, cars
00:28 like the Kia Sorento, even though that is slightly smaller than this.
00:31 Now, today we're going to do a detailed review of this car.
00:34 If you want to skip ahead to other parts of this review, you can use the time codes up
00:38 on the screen there, or if you're on YouTube, just scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:42 And if you haven't done so already, I'd love it if you could subscribe to our channel and
00:45 press the bell icon as well.
00:46 That way you'll find out every single time we drive a grill with tires.
00:51 So let's talk exterior.
00:52 You've got five external colors to pick from, and all but white is an additional $695.
00:56 OK, let's talk about this grill.
00:59 It's big.
01:00 So the grill is big itself, but then it has this giant brushed aluminium edge to it, so
01:05 it really does stand out.
01:06 And when you see this coming towards you, it's a bit hard to mistake it for anything
01:10 else.
01:11 Big Hyundai logo there too.
01:12 I don't think it actually looks bad, it's just quite imposing and looks very different
01:16 to every other car in this segment.
01:18 I think most other cars in this segment go for that, I guess, stylish, businessy type
01:22 look, whereas this really has that American style to it, and this car sold in the States,
01:28 so you can see where they've kind of tried to make it appeal.
01:31 Now that continues over here with the headlights.
01:33 So this is quite an interesting cluster.
01:35 Up the top here you have your daytime running light going all the way down the bottom, and
01:39 it kind of looks like it sits behind that panel and runs all the way down, and it's
01:43 got an indicator built into it there.
01:45 But the actual headlight module with the LED headlights is down the bottom here, so really
01:50 interesting setup.
01:51 We'll whip around to the side.
01:53 This is where you'll find your 20-inch alloy wheels.
01:56 Nice design, I think it's got that chrome look on the outside with a slightly darker
01:59 sort of graphite look on the inside of the alloy wheel.
02:03 A fairly decent profile tyre, so 50 profile, this should mean that the ride is pretty decent.
02:08 Hyundai takes, I guess, a lot of time and a lot of effort to make sure that the cars
02:11 that they sell here ride well and suit Australian conditions, so this shouldn't be any different,
02:16 but we'll see what it's like later on.
02:18 A little bit of plastic cladding along the side there.
02:21 Now this is interesting as well, have a look at this.
02:22 I haven't seen anything like this before.
02:24 It's that indicator built into the wing mirror.
02:26 Normally it's just this bottom section that lights up, but they've got like this C-shape
02:30 plugged into there, which is really fascinating.
02:32 Now in terms of dimensions, you can see them up on the screen there.
02:35 As a point of reference, this is actually slightly smaller than a CX-9.
02:40 When you look at it, it actually looks huge, and you'd think that it is bigger than a CX-9,
02:44 but yeah, slightly smaller, so just a point of interest there.
02:47 You've got your roof rails up the top here.
02:48 Thank you for correcting me in one of the other videos.
02:51 These are roof rails, not roof racks.
02:53 You've got privacy glass, and then come around to the back.
02:56 So you've got your LED tail lights.
02:58 You can see that cluster goes all the way down there.
02:59 You've got a couple of little lines up the top.
03:01 Then they've got this, which is kind of like a brushed chrome look that sits adjacent to
03:06 the tail light, so that really gives it a bit of character and definition.
03:09 Another light cluster down the bottom there.
03:11 Some real exhaust pipes, and then big Palisade lettering along the rear.
03:15 So let me know what you think about all of this.
03:18 Is this a bit too much, or do you think this is exactly what Hyundai needed to step above
03:22 the Santa Fe?
03:23 Righto, we are sitting inside the Palisade.
03:26 How's this interior colour?
03:27 It is very schmicko.
03:29 We will start with the key first though.
03:31 Here it is.
03:32 So you have lock, unlock, boot.
03:34 A little bit of chrome, sort of brushed aluminium stuff on top and bottom.
03:38 Then on the back, you have the Hyundai logo.
03:40 It's a proximity sensing key.
03:42 Put it in your pocket and then you have a push button start in here as well.
03:46 Quite like that push button start.
03:47 It's got like a metallic finish to it.
03:49 OK, let's talk styling.
03:51 I like what I'm seeing here because it's quite sophisticated, right?
03:53 So you've got this big cluster here that has the screen integrated into it.
03:57 You've got this nice material along the back there that houses the head up display as well.
04:02 And then it's tiered, so it goes from that darker colour through to the lighter with
04:06 this brushed aluminium strip.
04:07 I was about to say I can't see any piano black, but it is around the outskirts here.
04:12 It's OK, at least it's not down here getting smudged and yuck, which is good news.
04:18 I will call out though, I don't know what this material is.
04:20 So this opens and closes, but the material just looks really weird.
04:24 I wish with this they would have maybe had wood grain or something like that because,
04:27 I don't know, I feel like in the CX-9 the wood grain really gives this a classy look
04:32 and they even have wood grain up here, but they just haven't continued it down here.
04:36 So a little bit strange.
04:37 On the topic of wood grain, yeah, I like what they've done there, but strangely they've
04:41 put lines over the wood grain.
04:43 So instead of it just being natural wood grain, they've got all these lines in it which kind
04:47 of just interrupts the flow I reckon.
04:48 But anyway, I'm not a designer or a stylist, just pointing out my views.
04:52 Now what about your touch points?
04:54 So nice and soft there and also soft on the doors, so that's all good.
04:58 How soft is it?
04:59 We've tested the main surfaces in this car with our durometer.
05:01 If you want to see how this compares to other cars that we've tested before, scroll down
05:05 and have a look at the link in the description.
05:08 Build quality, yeah, it all feels nice.
05:11 And strong, no complaints from me.
05:14 OK, let's talk infotainment.
05:15 I'll get rid of this first.
05:17 So it is a 10.25 inch infotainment system, you can see it there.
05:22 Now it's interesting because it doesn't really take up the entire section.
05:26 You can see the screen cuts off just here on the corners, so I don't know why they didn't
05:30 just bother increasing the size of that, so it takes up that entire part.
05:34 But anyway, if you want to see a detailed review of this infotainment system, click
05:38 up here to watch one that we recorded earlier.
05:41 But today I will take you through just a basic overview.
05:44 So this is your home screen here.
05:45 You can set your profiles up the top and that will attach your profile to settings within
05:50 the car.
05:51 And then you can also adjust things like what appears on here.
05:54 You can see a map background there.
05:56 And if you swipe across, you have all of your controls for the infotainment system.
06:00 You also have shortcut buttons down the bottom here as well.
06:03 Interesting features, you have things like the sounds of nature.
06:06 We've seen this previously on Kia models.
06:08 Audio talk, where you can talk to people down the other end of the car.
06:12 So it just takes the microphone up the front and projects the audio down the back, which
06:15 I think is a great feature.
06:17 Voice memo in case you get any ideas out on the road.
06:20 Quiet mode if you have sleeping kids in the back, you don't want to wake them up.
06:23 It's got all of those features, which is cool.
06:24 In terms of radio, you have AM, FM, DAB plus digital radio, so it's got all of those bases
06:31 covered.
06:32 You've also got a 12 speaker Infinity branded sound system.
06:35 In terms of smartphone mirroring, you have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
06:38 This is what Apple CarPlay looks like.
06:40 Full screen integration and it is nice and quick and sharp.
06:44 I like that.
06:45 Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require a cable.
06:48 And this is what Android Auto looks like.
06:51 Disappointingly, it's not a full screen integration for some reason.
06:54 So it's in this little box in the corner.
06:56 It's a little bit disappointing.
06:57 I would have hoped to see a full screen integration there.
07:00 If you want to see a comparison between Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, click up here.
07:04 We filmed one previously, did some tests to see which one is better.
07:08 Now ahead of the driver, you also have another LCD display.
07:11 This shows you things like digital speedometer, all wheel drive controls, navigation and car
07:16 settings as well.
07:18 Moving on to safety tech, some of the main features include autonomous emergency braking,
07:22 an automatic dimming rear vision mirror, a lane keeping assistant, lane departure warning,
07:27 radar cruise control, a blind spot monitor built into the wing mirror.
07:31 You have safe exit assistant, which means you can't open the door if there's another
07:35 vehicle coming.
07:36 Very handy if you have kids that are in a hurry.
07:37 I like the fact that you can also push this button here to not only lock the back windows,
07:41 but lock the rear doors as well.
07:43 You have a rear seat reminder.
07:45 So if you do have kids in the back seat, it will remind you to check that they are out
07:49 of the car when you leave.
07:51 And finally, you have a driver attention monitor as well.
07:55 Let's look at the cameras and the parking sensors.
07:57 You have front and rear parking sensors.
07:59 And let's have a look at the reverse view camera.
08:00 I'm going to just start the car, pop that into reverse.
08:05 So it's a 360 camera.
08:06 You can see you've got the views there.
08:08 You can zoom in and out on that if you need to.
08:11 And then you can manually select different views from here as well, including those side
08:15 views.
08:16 Quality of the camera isn't amazing.
08:18 I can't look at that.
08:20 That is super just blurry and grainy.
08:23 And on the 360 camera, it just looks really low quality.
08:26 So I just wish they used the same system that they use in the Kia Sorento.
08:29 It's like super high resolution and so a little bit disappointing, but you do get the full
08:34 suite of sensors and also active guidelines as well.
08:38 Before we move on, I have a question for you guys.
08:40 Do you own a car with a beige or white interior?
08:44 How do you keep it clean?
08:45 What's it like long term?
08:46 And would you recommend a beige interior if you have a family?
08:50 Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
08:53 Let's talk about practicality and we'll start with your connectivity.
08:57 Now inside this centre console here you have wireless phone charging, one USB port for
09:01 your smartphone mirroring.
09:03 Down here you've got another 12 volt outlet and another USB port and then in the centre
09:07 console you have yet another USB port and another 12 volt outlet.
09:12 So you can see the theme here, there is a lot of connectivity options around the car.
09:15 In terms of storage, where are you going to whack your phone?
09:18 Well phone can virtually live anywhere here.
09:20 You can hit these buttons to deploy cup holders and then your phone can easily sit in there
09:26 and then of course you have wireless phone charging as well.
09:29 You can also store your phone down here if you want, if you want it charging through
09:33 a cable.
09:34 Now what about storage for your coffee cup?
09:35 Well they're quite sort of deep these holders so yeah you kind of need to sit it side so
09:42 it'll put something underneath it to prevent the lid coming off.
09:44 In terms of regular bottles, you can fit one of these easily inside the cup holder.
09:49 There's little teeth on the side there to hold it into position too.
09:52 Then you have storage inside the door as well.
09:55 Now here's a surprise, we have something new.
09:58 A lot of you have asked about a bigger bottle being tested so this is a much bigger one.
10:03 I think we'll only test this inside the door so you can get an idea of whether it fits
10:06 or not.
10:07 No, it does not fit inside the door of the Palisade, not easily anyway without breaking
10:12 something so we'll get rid of that.
10:14 The centre console is huge, it is nice and deep.
10:17 Just to show you how deep it is, watch this, the bottle easily disappears into there and
10:21 you have a little coin tray as well.
10:24 Finally you have this box over here for your glove box, that's really reasonable.
10:29 Now there is no sunglasses holder but you do get this little feature here.
10:33 So you have a mirror and that means you can keep an eye on everyone in the back of the
10:37 car and then you can also talk to them using that driver talk feature.
10:40 Righto, let's talk about comfort.
10:41 So you have dual zone automatic climate control up the front here plus controls for the rear.
10:47 You also get heated and cooled seats for the front row plus a heated steering wheel.
10:52 You get electric seat adjustment for the driver and front passenger plus memory.
10:56 The other thing I like about the seats is the design, they look really nice and cool.
11:00 Nappa leather, you get the perforations there and they help you from sticking to the seat
11:05 and that's also where the air comes through for the ventilation.
11:08 But if you follow the seat up, you not only see the sunroof but a suede headliner as well
11:14 so pretty cool looking design but I just wonder how clean that's going to stay.
11:19 Seats themselves are really comfy.
11:20 They hug you in nicely, the base extends as well and then the steering wheel sits nicely
11:25 in the hand with those paddle shifters there.
11:27 All of these controls are easy to reach while you're driving as well.
11:30 Second row, let's talk about what it's like here.
11:32 Well start off with room.
11:34 I have stacks of knee room, loads of toe room and a really decent amount of headroom as
11:40 well.
11:41 That's despite the fact we've got the sunroof at the front and then a second sunroof.
11:43 Well it's actually not a sunroof because it doesn't open but you've got a second roof
11:47 here as well.
11:48 There's a fair bit of space regardless of all of this stuff that eats into it.
11:53 Your air vents are built into the roof here so you can adjust those as you go.
11:57 Down the centre stack, this is where you have your third zone of climate control plus the
12:01 heated seat controls for the two outboard seats.
12:03 Keep in mind if you get this in the seven seat configuration, because you can even do
12:07 seven or eight, it's a no cost option, you actually get cooled seats as well for the
12:11 outboard seats.
12:13 That's worth keeping in mind.
12:14 USB ports into the seats themselves plus a 12 volt outlet down the bottom.
12:19 Map pockets here and then if I drop this down you have centre armrest with two cup holders.
12:25 See how it goes fitting our bottle.
12:26 The big bottle doesn't fit anywhere here so I'm not going to bother with that.
12:29 Fits easily there.
12:30 Then you have storage inside the doors as well plus more cup holders at the top of the
12:36 doors so it is absolutely jam packed.
12:38 You've got this shade that you can manually pop into position as well.
12:43 Plus two ISOFIX points on the outboard seats.
12:46 Seats themselves move so they're in a 60/40 combination so you can see here I can move
12:51 that forwards and backwards to give more room for the third row as well.
12:54 So really big fan of this space and even for adults you have acres of room here.
12:59 Now third row access.
13:00 It is actually pretty straightforward.
13:02 You have a lever down here that folds the seat flat or you can simply push a button
13:06 and that will move everything out of the way for you to climb in.
13:10 Let's see if it's adult friendly.
13:12 Yep, OK.
13:13 So getting in is a little tight but it's not too bad.
13:16 So let me see what this is like if I start bringing this back.
13:19 I'll bring it back to about there and lock it in.
13:22 There you go.
13:23 That's actually not terrible.
13:24 I've got a decent amount of knee room.
13:26 Toe room's pretty reasonable and headroom is good.
13:29 You've got to consider that this isn't a massive, massive SUV but I have plenty of room here.
13:34 So two cup holders.
13:35 I also have a USB port there and then you have the same thing on either side and then
13:39 you can also fit three abreast here.
13:41 I don't think you'd be fitting three adults abreast but you can fit three kids abreast
13:45 making this an eight seater.
13:48 Now Igor, how much leg room is there down the front there?
13:51 OK, that's not too bad.
13:53 That's a reasonable amount.
13:54 So you can always move this forward and back if you need more or less room.
13:58 So big SUV, does that mean big cargo space?
14:01 Let's have a look, see.
14:03 Power tailgate, swing out of the way there.
14:05 So you have around 300 litres of cargo space here when the third row is in position.
14:10 Not a huge amount of room but we'll see how it fares with our laptop bag and our suitcase.
14:18 Look at that, fits beautifully and then what you can do is drop your third row.
14:24 So pull of that, well drop that out of the way.
14:28 Same story over here.
14:30 The way that goes.
14:31 You get about 700 litres of cargo space there.
14:34 I'll give you a look at that as well.
14:36 This will easily fit but it's good to get a visual.
14:41 Finally if you do want a whopper amount of room you can drop your second row using the
14:45 buttons here and that expands to around 1300 litres of cargo space.
14:50 That is a big old boot.
14:51 Now what about your spare tyre and the other bits and pieces?
14:53 So under here you have cargo blind, the jack and a few other odds and ends.
14:58 You have hooks off to the side, a big old subwoofer, a 12 volt outlet.
15:02 And the spare tyre, it lives under the car which means it's not taking up a valuable
15:06 space in the back here.
15:08 OK we're on the road in the Palisade.
15:11 Now you've got two engine options for Palisade.
15:13 A petrol V6 similar to the engine that we tested recently in the Kia Carnival.
15:18 Click up there if you want to watch that review.
15:20 The only limitation to the V6 is it's front wheel drive only.
15:24 So if you want all wheel drive like we have here in the top spec Highlander, it's mated
15:27 to a diesel.
15:28 It's a 2.2 litre turbocharged four cylinder diesel engine.
15:33 It makes 147 kilowatts of power and 440 newton metres of torque.
15:38 It's actually a pretty reasonable amount for a four cylinder diesel, especially in a vehicle
15:43 this size.
15:44 You hear those numbers and you think to yourself that's probably not going to be enough to
15:47 move this big rig.
15:49 But it actually does a pretty competent job.
15:51 All of that torque is sent through an eight speed automatic transmission and it goes through
15:56 what's called H-Trac which is Hyundai's all wheel drive system.
16:00 The way that works, if I flick over to the screen here, you can see that it's constantly
16:04 varying torque between the front and rear axles depending on the drive mode that you're
16:08 in.
16:09 And then if you do want more torque, give it a punch and it will start sending it between
16:12 the front and the rear.
16:13 And then if you're in sport mode it obviously sends that a little further to the rear.
16:17 Righto, so what does it feel like?
16:18 We're just in comfort mode here.
16:20 Give it a little kick.
16:22 Hey that's pretty good.
16:24 So it pushes you back into the seat nicely.
16:27 Like it's not going to pull the skin off your bones but it's actually not too bad for what
16:32 it is.
16:33 The limitation that we've got is it's just Igor and I, we can't put eight people into
16:36 here.
16:37 I suspect if you did load it up it'd feel a little bit slower but I'm actually pretty
16:40 impressed with that.
16:41 For a four cylinder diesel that's pulling along nicely.
16:44 The gearbox is really smooth as well.
16:46 It's never hunting, it's always ready to go in the right gear.
16:49 And it'll even lean on the torque band.
16:51 So if I roll into the throttle it won't dive back through the gears, it'll just use the
16:55 turbocharged diesel to get everything moving.
16:58 I did notice though it can be a little bit noisy when you get stuck into it.
17:02 It's especially noisy outside as well, you can hear it clattering away there.
17:06 It's not terrible, it's just not amazing.
17:08 Fuel economy comes in at 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres, that's the official claim.
17:14 We are sitting on 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres, so not quite that 7 litre per 100 claim.
17:21 Righto, let's talk drive mode.
17:22 So you've got comfort and you change them here using this little spinny thing, I don't
17:28 know, whatever you call this thing.
17:29 So you move it from comfort to eco, eco dulls the throttle response a little bit and will
17:34 also change the torque attribution whether it goes to the front or the rear axle and
17:37 then you can go through sport and smart.
17:40 It just kind of looks out for the type of driving that you're doing and if you are getting
17:44 stuck into it, it will pick the right torque distribution for you.
17:48 So in sport mode here I can feel everything is instantly sharper, doesn't really feel
17:53 any quicker, it's just doing everything quicker.
17:55 So it's changing through gears quicker and it's more eager to jump back through the gears
17:59 instead of holding a gear and just using the torque band so it'll shuffle through them
18:03 a little more often.
18:04 You also have off-road modes, so you can switch between snow, mud and sand by flicking the
18:09 other way around.
18:10 All that's going to do is adjust how much torque is sent between the front and rear
18:13 axle and how much traction control intervention you have.
18:16 Hyundai doesn't have an official 0-100 time but we thought we'd put it up against the
18:20 stopwatch to see how it goes.
18:33 OK let's talk handling and steering, yes this is not a Ferrari but keen to see what it feels
18:39 like.
18:40 It's actually not terrible, yes it has a little bit of body roll but for such a big rig it
18:46 sits nice and flattish through corners.
18:49 The steering has a decent amount of resistance to it when it's in sport mode so you can really
18:54 get that feedback through the wheel.
18:55 If I slot it back to comfort it's really light as well so I think you get the best of both
19:00 worlds there with that steering tune.
19:02 There are no adaptive dampers so it's a single fixed damper setup but that's not such a bad
19:08 thing so obviously adaptive dampers are great with sports cars but for something like this
19:12 the tune actually caters for most road conditions.
19:15 Let's talk turning circle, 11.8 metres, it is bang on the exact same as the Mazda CX-9
19:22 and look it's not terrible, it just means when you are in and around the city something
19:25 this big is going to need a little bit of room to turn around.
19:29 You know what's strange with visibility in this car, it's slightly smaller than a CX-9,
19:33 I've mentioned that before but it actually feels bigger inside the cabin, like the cabin
19:38 feels huge and same on the visibility front, it feels like a much bigger vehicle behind
19:43 the wheel, it feels like I'm sitting up a little bit higher as well.
19:46 So there is a ground clearance of 222mm, means that you can do basic sort of off-roading
19:52 like going to a campsite or something like that, nothing too serious but I do see down
19:56 the front of the bonnet there I've got front and rear parking sensors, big wing mirrors
19:59 too with the blind spot monitors built into those, visibility out the rear is pretty decent,
20:05 it's a narrow envelope but it's not terrible and the cool thing is when I pop the indicator
20:09 on I get a screen come up in front of me with the cameras that look down the side of the
20:14 car, that is a really cool feature and is going to come in handy if you are doing highway
20:19 driving or something like that and you want to use your blind spot monitors in the wing
20:22 mirror and also a backup here, you will never have an excuse to merge into anything.
20:29 So Hyundai Palisade, I think this is creating a trend now, these big SUVs that are popular
20:34 in the States that are probably going to do well in Australia.
20:37 75 grand is a lot of money but I can't think of any features that it's missing inside,
20:41 it really is jam-packed, it's got a punchy diesel engine as well and it's fairly fuel
20:45 efficient.
20:46 So yeah, I'm a fan of it, I think what they've done here is great, it is a shame that this
20:50 didn't come here early and it's kind of midway through its product life cycle now so there
20:54 should be an update coming soon and we should benefit from that as it rolls on.
20:59 The equivalent to this is the Kia Telluride, I think that thing looks way better than this
21:03 but it's not coming to Australia at this stage so it would be awesome to see that here as
21:07 well alongside the Palisade.
21:09 So let me know in the comments section below, did you order one of these?
