Hyundai actually listened to us and updated the suspension in the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5. We had issues with body control and the way it drove away from city streets. Is it fixed? Paul Maric finds out.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. So, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. We have already reviewed this car, but there
00:04 has been a key change. When we drove it, I complained about how bad the suspension was
00:09 and how poor the body control was. Well, someone at Hyundai listened because they have updated
00:13 the suspension and claimed to have fixed the body control issues. So, we're going to do
00:17 a slightly more condensed review compared to what we normally do. So, I'll run through
00:21 that in just a second.
00:22 Just as a reminder in terms of pricing and competitors, this is the mid-spec all-wheel
00:25 drive version, so it's priced at just under $80,000. This competes with things like the
00:29 Kia EV6, the Genesis GV60, and the Tesla Model Y as well. So, today, it's going to be a slightly
00:36 less detailed review, but if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:40 you can use the time codes on the screen, or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down
00:43 and use the chapters below. And if you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel
00:46 and press the bell icon so you can find out every single time we drive a car that has
00:50 hopefully been fixed.
00:52 So, I'm going to skip through all of this exterior part because we have already seen
00:57 this. I have gone through it in a lot of detail before. So, if you do want to catch up on
01:02 that review, you can use the link in the description below or that little card on the screen there
01:07 to get all of those details. But, yeah, I love the look of this. I still think it looks
01:11 fantastic. I love these sort of square pixel LED headlights and just the overall design
01:16 as well. And I love this matte finish colour as well. I think that looks unreal.
01:20 One of the big changes they did make in addition to that suspension is actually the battery.
01:23 So, come down the back with me. So, what has changed? Let me crack this open while I talk
01:27 about the battery. So, it's increased in size. It's around 80 kilowatt hours now instead
01:31 of being a little over 70 kilowatt hours. So, that means more weight, but it also means
01:36 an increased driving range of just over 450 kilometres.
01:39 Now, I think that the suspension changes here have been not only to address the criticism
01:45 on the ride, but also to take into account the extra battery weight because the second
01:49 you start adding that weight, lower centre of gravity, it is going to affect the way
01:53 that the car drives. So, we'll go through that in a little bit more detail shortly.
01:56 But as a recap here, you have a great architecture beneath the skin. So, 800 volt charging architecture,
02:02 it'll do up to 350 kilowatt. Currently, that averages to around 200, a little over 200
02:06 kilowatts when you do plug it up and the battery is pre-warmed. You do have a function now
02:11 if you set your destination to a DC charger that it pre-warms the battery, similar to
02:15 the way Tesla does. Unfortunately, a heat pump, which they've now integrated into this
02:18 platform is only available on the top spec and not available here on the lower models.
02:23 Under the AC front, you have three-phase charging. You also have vehicle to load as well, which
02:28 means you can power appliances from this at up to 3.6 kilowatts as well. So, it's a really
02:32 good EV setup in terms of the specs.
02:35 But let's jump inside the cabin. I'll run you through that quickly and then we'll go
02:38 for a spin.
02:39 Okay, so normally this is where I'd go into a whole lot of detail about the interior of
02:43 the car as well. But like I said before, I've already done all this with the previous Ioniq
02:47 5 that we had. So, just go down to the link in the description below if you do want to
02:50 check out that review. I'll just run you through some of the cooler parts here. So,
02:54 obviously, there's two screens ahead of the driver. They work incredibly well because
02:58 this one's your touchscreen for the infotainment. Very easy to use and it comes with all your
03:02 smartphone mirroring tech like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Unfortunately, both of those
03:06 are wired. AM/FM, DAB, digital radio, Bose sound system.
03:11 But what is pretty cool here, this actually has a head-up display now, so it means that
03:15 you can obviously get the contents of a head-up display ahead of the driver. But it also has
03:19 augmented reality, so when you do have a navigation destination set, you'll see it appear on the
03:23 screen ahead of you and give you a better idea of where you need to turn. So, I do quite
03:27 like that technology. They have also introduced, which isn't on this car here, but digital
03:32 mirrors similar to the digital mirrors we've seen on the GV60. So, not a huge fan of those,
03:37 but I'm keen to have a drive of this with the digital mirrors to see exactly how that
03:41 performs. But outside of that, yeah, funky interior, really well packaged in terms of
03:46 space inside the cabin here, and I think they've done a really great job with the design and
03:50 making this feel premium. This feels way more premium than any Tesla product. So, when you
03:56 do compare those two in terms of price, this feels significantly better than a Tesla on
04:01 every single front there.
04:02 So, I did promise I would keep all of this brief. Like I said, if you want more detail,
04:06 go to the other review. But let's hit the road and see whether they have actually fixed
04:10 the suspension for the better.
04:13 So, we've just hit the road in the Ioniq 5. So, I'll give you a run through of all the
04:19 stats because it has changed a little bit here. As part of that battery becoming bigger,
04:24 they've also rolled out a little bit more power and torque. So, there's 14 kilowatts
04:27 more power. That produces a combined 239 kilowatts of power and just over 600 newton metres of
04:34 torque. And that's split between two motors, one on the front axle, one on the rear axle.
04:39 The entry level version of the Ioniq 5 is just rear wheel drive, whereas mid-spec up
04:43 is all wheel drive. So, it simply means you get one motor up front, one motor at the rear.
04:47 Motor on the front axle generates 74 kilowatts of power, so a slight increase over last time.
04:52 And then the motor at the back is just over 160 kilowatts of power. And they combine to
04:55 give you that power output.
04:57 So, yeah, in terms of behind the wheel, does it do all the EV stuff? Yes, it does. It sort
05:03 of pins you back in the seat. Today is incredibly hot as well, so be interested to see how this
05:07 fares with a little bit of heat in the system.
05:10 So, from a sort of slow speed driving point of view, it all feels perfectly fine. But,
05:14 I'm going to read this from my piece of paper, because this is where Hyundai says all the
05:20 changes have been made. So, what they've said here is they've equipped the Ioniq 5 with
05:25 a new ride and handling package, perfectly tailored to the powertrain and the larger
05:30 battery. Key focuses were wheel control, bump absorption and body control, and the result
05:37 is a vehicle that perfectly blends comfort with engaging dynamics, no matter the road
05:43 or road surface.
05:45 So, that's why we've got our proving ground road here to figure all this stuff out. We
05:49 want to get to the bottom of whether this has improved over the last one.
05:53 Okay, so what we're going to do, we're going to go for a bit of a sporty drive here. We'll
05:56 see whether it feels any different around our track compared to last time. Brakes aren't
06:01 too bad, which is great. Slot it through here. Okay, so far so good. That is feeling a little
06:13 bouncy through there. Now, this section here, the faster left-hander here is where I had
06:18 problems last time.
06:20 Well, yeah, that's still kind of, I don't know, it still bounces a fair bit once it
06:29 hits a bump mid-corner, but it doesn't feel as, I guess, out of control in a sense. When
06:35 I say out of control, I mean it doesn't feel like it's just doing whatever it wants. You
06:39 kind of feel like that's what you expect. We'll try it up the faster section up the
06:44 back here. Yeah, see, it sits flatter, or it feels like it sits flatter to me, but it
06:49 still is catching some of these bumps mid-corner, which are causing it to wallow a little bit.
06:55 But it does feel like it is improved. Let's have a look at what it's like on our sine
06:59 waves here. It's actually clocking up a fair bit of pace there.
07:02 So if you have watched our last review of the Ioniq 5, you would have noticed that during
07:07 our ride over the sine waves, it just lacked body control at the top end, and it was quite
07:11 sort of choppy and all over the place. It really just didn't feel comfortable to drive
07:15 fast, especially in that top spec model. There is then also an even faster version of this
07:20 coming called the Ioniq 5 N, so that will have, I presume, some kind of adaptive damping,
07:25 but this at the moment is not an adaptive damping setup.
07:28 It's also been really hard to find exactly what has changed here. They haven't really
07:31 been specific. So we are on our, well, heading to our sine waves now. I've got to jack the
07:37 speed up to 130. It actually feels really good as a mid-spec. This thing has a stack
07:42 of punch.
07:43 OK, so sine waves are coming up. There is a little kink halfway through this corner.
07:48 It's kind of just boaty across there. All right, here's our sine waves at 130. This
07:56 is replicating what we did last time.
07:58 Yeah, look, it is still very vague at the top end, so it doesn't feel like it has a
08:04 huge amount of body control there. It certainly doesn't feel anywhere near as good as something
08:08 like an EV6, and granted, the Tesla Model Y is much firmer than this, but the Model
08:13 Y is very composed over that stuff.
08:15 So I think this new suspension package has helped, but it still needs some degree of
08:20 tuning locally. I think they've taken a tune that perhaps works in the states where they're
08:24 happy with that soft sort of floaty ride, but here in Australia, those sine waves, I
08:29 have said this in our other videos before, if you leave the big smoke and head out into
08:33 the country, you will experience roads like that, and if you have to overtake or you are
08:38 driving in some of the states where 130 k's an hour is legal, you will find that the car
08:42 feels very floaty over that stuff, especially if you've got the family on board and there's
08:46 a fair bit of weight. So I think that is worth keeping in mind.
08:49 The good thing though that I quite like about this package, I was having a little bit of
08:52 fun earlier, but unlike the Tesla products, which I think it's only in the performance
08:57 trim you can get track mode, if you do switch all the stability controls off, you can actually
09:00 have a lot of fun with this, and it's my understanding that with the IONIQ 5N and the IONIQ 6N eventually,
09:06 they're going to have drift modes and other features that allow you to send all the torque
09:10 to the rear axle. So I think that is a bonus of the way that they have set this up. While
09:15 it is a little wallowy over this stuff, it actually does feel fun and engaging when you
09:19 do switch everything off.
09:20 OK, now before we wrap this up, one of the extra tests we've added since we last filmed
09:24 the IONIQ 5 is our bumpy country road. So this is a lot of corrugations and just a lot
09:30 of not very goodness. So we do this at 90 k's an hour.
09:35 See this is interesting, it actually feels quite good over this. So you get the benefit
09:40 of the soft suspension when you do hit dodgy sections of road like this, and this particular
09:46 stretch of road is our condensed sine waves. You can feel it floating over that because
09:51 it doesn't have the fast rebound that some of the other cars in this segment do, but
09:56 as we float over this stuff, it is actually just very smooth and very comfortable as well.
10:01 This particular road in the EV6 feels a lot firmer because they've dialled in the firmness
10:06 to counteract that lack of body control. So yeah, look, I think it has its positives and
10:10 its negatives. If you are going to be doing sporty driving and that sort of stuff, I'd
10:14 probably be leaning towards an EV6 over this, or perhaps the Model Y Performance once that
10:19 lobs. But if you are predominantly in and around the city where you are going to be
10:23 experiencing those types of roads, this probably is going to be the better option for a smoother,
10:29 more comfortable ride.
10:31 Okay, so I thought let's just do our performance numbers here anyway. I know that we did them
10:35 with the last IONIQ 5, but we didn't have our GPS thing doing it all. So we'll do an
10:40 acceleration all the way through to 120 so we can get our 80 to 120 acceleration. We'll
10:45 also do a brake as well to see how quickly this stops from 100 k's an hour. So here we
10:50 go, I've got it in sport mode. I might switch traction control off. There it is. We'll stand
10:56 on the throttle and see how we go.
11:04 Yeah, it feels nice once it gets up and moves. So there's 100 and 120. So let's have a look
11:12 at what the numbers look like. Okie dokie, so 0 to 100, 5.3 seconds and 80 to 120, 3.5
11:21 seconds. So not a bad effort there. Okay, so we're going to stop from 100, so we'll
11:25 dial up 100 k's an hour. There it is there. Get our marker.
11:30 [Engine revs]
11:34 Alrighty, let's have a little look here and see how quickly we stopped from 100. So 100
11:44 to 0, 3.56 seconds and 43.7 metres. So if you do want to see how this car compares to
11:52 other cars that we've tested before on our performance tests, have a look in the description
11:56 below. We've only just started collecting these figures, so they will grow over time.
12:01 But have a look at how the Ioniq 5 compares to other cars. And finally, our reverse speed
12:06 test. I've left it in sport mode. Let's see how it goes. Here we go. Jeez, it gets up
12:14 and moves. So 54 kilometres an hour in reverse.
12:22 Updated Hyundai Ioniq 5. What's it like? Well, look, the suspension is improved, as
12:29 in it's better than it was previously, which is good news. But I still think it's nowhere
12:33 near as good as the EV6. And I think a lot of that comes down to local ride and handling
12:37 tuning. And Hyundai's now stopped that. Kia is still doing it. And I think there is a
12:41 lot of merit in it, because especially on these roads here, this is representative of
12:45 an Australian back road. It really does feel completely different to the EV6. So look,
12:49 hopefully Hyundai does address that at some point. And we do see an improvement, especially
12:53 with the Ioniq 5N that's about to be launched. I mean, that thing is going to be blisteringly
12:58 quick, and it needs to have a well-sorted ride. So let's see what happens there. Outside
13:02 of that, this is a really fun car. I just love the interior. I love the charging tech.
13:07 I love the EV side of it. It is all really well thought out. So very impressed with it.
13:11 So let me know what you think of the comments section below. Have you bought an Ioniq 5?
13:15 Do you care about the ride? Do you just drive it in and around the city? Doesn't really
13:18 sort of matter that much to you? Let me know what you reckon down in the comments section below.
