No, we haven't started reviewing used cars! This is the 2021 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series GXL. It's still sold as a brand new car in Australia, so we thought we'd get behind the wheel of this turbocharged diesel V8 brute to see whether it still stacks up in 2021. Paul Maric reviews the LandCruiser 70 Series to see if it's worth buying one today.

00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 No, it's okay, we haven't started doing used car reviews.
00:03 This is, in fact, brand new.
00:06 It is the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series,
00:08 and this right here is the SUV version of it.
00:11 There's a few different ones.
00:12 You've got a ute, you've got the SUV,
00:13 you've got a troop carrier as well.
00:15 So there's one for every need.
00:16 This is the top spec version, it's called the GXL.
00:19 It's priced at a little over $71,000,
00:22 but if that's too expensive,
00:24 they do a version that's a little bit cheaper
00:26 that has wind-up windows that is a little over $67,000.
00:30 Now this, in terms of competitors,
00:31 doesn't really have any.
00:32 It used to compete with the Defender
00:34 when that was brand new.
00:35 Now that it has a new, new version,
00:37 that's a whole lot luxurious and very different to this,
00:39 doesn't really have that as a competitor anymore.
00:42 Today, we're gonna do a detailed review of this car.
00:44 If you wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:46 you can use the time codes up on the screen,
00:48 or if you're on YouTube,
00:49 just scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:51 And if you haven't done so already,
00:52 make sure you subscribe to our channel
00:54 and press the bell icon
00:56 so you can join us when we step back in time.
00:58 So before we talk about the exterior,
01:01 I should preface when I said we don't do used car reviews.
01:03 We actually did one, which was the GTS-R W1 ute.
01:06 So if you wanna check that video out, click up here.
01:08 I think if you like this sort of stuff,
01:09 you might like NLS 9-powered ute.
01:11 But anyway, external, six colors to pick from,
01:14 all but this weird yellow shade
01:16 that I've never seen these in,
01:17 plus white is an extra $675.
01:21 I mean, what is there to say about the design?
01:23 It looks like a brick,
01:24 and I think that's why these are so synonymous
01:27 with just tough conditions and being able to go anywhere.
01:30 If you go to the middle of Australia, this is all you see.
01:33 The bigger 200 Series Land Cruiser plus these,
01:35 you'll rarely ever see other vehicles,
01:37 and that's because these are so dependable
01:38 and they never really change.
01:40 So in terms of the design, you can see down here,
01:42 you've got these lashings of chrome, a big Toyota logo,
01:46 big bit of bumper there.
01:47 It really is quite a solid setup.
01:49 Now you're not gonna find any radars
01:50 or any other fancy stuff down the front here.
01:53 This car doesn't actually have any parking sensors,
01:55 any cameras, anything sort of modern.
01:58 So there's nothing really that can go wrong up here.
02:00 You've got a functional hood scoop for the diesel V8.
02:02 Over here, you have a set of standard halogen headlights
02:05 and then halogen indicator globe,
02:07 and then fog lights down the bottom there.
02:09 Let's whip around to the side.
02:11 Now down here, you've got a set of 16-inch alloy wheels
02:14 and all-terrain tires.
02:16 Above the tires, you've got these
02:18 sort of plastic arch protectors.
02:20 Now, if you have a think about all the modern SUVs today
02:22 that have this kind of stuff,
02:24 this is where it's born from.
02:25 Rugged off-roaders like this,
02:26 they try and add this stuff to modern SUVs
02:28 to make them look rugged,
02:29 but this is where it originated from.
02:31 This is the OG of the wheel arch protector.
02:34 Now, this is something you're not gonna see
02:36 on a lot of modern SUVs today,
02:38 and that is an automatic locking hub.
02:41 That means the vehicle's able to decide
02:42 when it wants to engage the front axle.
02:44 You can, though, lock it in.
02:46 So if you are going to be doing a lot of heavy off-roading,
02:48 when you do lock the hub in,
02:50 it means that it's permanently engaged
02:51 and it's not going to accidentally unlock.
02:53 But in the auto mode,
02:54 when you switch between two high and four high,
02:56 it'll determine when it wants to lock those hubs.
02:58 In the previous generation,
02:59 or the older version of the 7 Series,
03:01 you had manually locking hubs,
03:02 so you could, in theory,
03:03 isolate the entire front axle from the drivetrain.
03:07 That meant that if you had issues with it,
03:08 you weren't going to run into any dramas
03:09 when you're out in the middle of nowhere.
03:10 So it is a slight compromise,
03:12 but I guess for the ease of use,
03:15 that means you don't have to hop out and engage the hubs
03:17 every single time you wanna go into a four-wheel drive mode.
03:19 Now, you've also got a snorkel as standard.
03:22 You've got a side indicator there.
03:24 You have an electric aerial on the other side
03:26 that goes up and down when the radio goes on and off,
03:28 and you can manually control that as well.
03:30 Wing mirrors, these are entirely manual
03:32 on both sides of the car,
03:34 so no electric adjustment there.
03:35 Toyota Land Cruiser badge,
03:37 you've got these metal side steps.
03:39 You have central locking on this model,
03:41 but you also have a keyhole to get you access.
03:42 If that fails, come around to the back.
03:44 So here you have a spare tyre on the back.
03:47 It's a full-size all-terrain tyre.
03:49 And then you have a split tailgate,
03:50 so you can see it opens there in two parts.
03:52 We'll have a closer look at that later on,
03:53 but more metal down there.
03:55 You have an indicator brake light,
03:57 and then another high-mounted brake light as well,
03:59 and the GXL badge,
04:00 which signifies this is the top-spec model.
04:02 Now, let me know in the comments section below.
04:05 I understand why this exists.
04:06 It's for people that want no fuss.
04:08 A lot of the components in here
04:10 are going to be the exact same
04:11 as they were 20 or 30 years ago,
04:12 and it means you can get spares wherever you want.
04:14 And if it does break down in the middle of nowhere,
04:16 you can kinda just fix everything yourself.
04:18 Do you think a car like this should exist today,
04:21 or do you reckon they should be done with it?
04:22 Let me know your thoughts down there.
04:23 So we are inside the 70 Series.
04:26 Let's start off with the key.
04:27 Here it is here.
04:28 So traditional key.
04:29 You can use that in the door slot,
04:31 and you also use that to start the car.
04:33 You also have central locking as well.
04:35 So lock and unlock on there,
04:36 and then the Toyota logo on the back.
04:39 I'll pop that in.
04:40 As soon as I turn this, you're gonna hear a noise.
04:42 That's the aerial coming up and the radio switching on.
04:46 Now, in terms of the styling,
04:47 as you can imagine, it is fairly basic and straightforward.
04:51 There's nothing too special here,
04:52 and it's been like this for ages.
04:54 They really haven't updated the styling a lot.
04:56 Over the generations, the radio system has changed,
04:58 so this is the latest version of that,
05:00 and I'll run through the infotainment in just a second.
05:02 But you can see features up the top, like the clock.
05:04 You've got outside temperature,
05:06 and also a lap timer randomly.
05:07 Now, what about the material and the touch points?
05:10 (tapping)
05:12 All very, very hard, except the door rest,
05:15 which is nice and soft.
05:16 How hard are they?
05:17 Well, we've got our durometer.
05:18 We've tested the main surfaces in this car.
05:20 If you wanna see how this compares
05:21 to other cars we've tested before,
05:22 have a look at the link in the description.
05:24 Now, what about build quality?
05:25 (tapping)
05:27 Look, it feels pretty solid.
05:29 There is a lot of flex in parts here,
05:31 and even down to the bumper at the front there,
05:34 it's got little rubber isolators on it as well.
05:36 It's this type of stuff that makes this car durable.
05:39 If this was all strong and sort of really well screwed in,
05:42 it would become too brittle over corrugations
05:45 and the type of thing that you experience
05:46 out in the middle of nowhere.
05:47 So yeah, it is flexible enough to cater
05:50 for the demands of middle Australia.
05:52 Before we look at the infotainment system,
05:54 I just wanna run you through some of the buttons here.
05:55 So you have this controller here for the aerial.
05:58 You can actually set its maximum height.
05:59 So if you're going into a car park or something,
06:01 you can have it max out a little lower.
06:03 Over on this side, you have an idle up switch.
06:05 This allows you to keep a higher idle speed.
06:07 This is especially useful
06:08 if you're starting in extremely cold climates
06:11 and the car needs to get warmer quicker.
06:13 And then finally, you have a manual DPF burn switch.
06:16 So it does have an automatic diesel particulate filter burn
06:18 that happens every 100 to 300 kilometres,
06:21 but you can initiate it manually yourself using the button.
06:24 Okay, let's talk infotainment.
06:25 So this has been upgraded recently.
06:27 Well, if you have a look at the manual,
06:29 there was basically an AM radio, AM only,
06:31 AM/FM, and then recently they added this,
06:34 which now includes satellite navigation.
06:37 It's a 6.1 inch infotainment system
06:39 with shortcut buttons down the side.
06:41 It has AM and FM radio along with Bluetooth,
06:44 and that's made it to a four speaker stereo.
06:46 You also have USB input as well
06:48 if you want to stream from your phone.
06:50 There is voice recognition, doesn't really work that well.
06:52 Satellite navigation is built in,
06:54 but there's no smartphone mirroring,
06:55 so no Apple CarPlay, no Android Auto.
06:57 For the most part though, this actually does an okay job.
07:00 So, you know, it does what it needs to do,
07:02 and it comes with Toyota Link as well.
07:03 So it's very basic, but with this car,
07:05 Toyota uses parts they know work,
07:08 and this infotainment system came out ages and ages ago.
07:10 So it's kind of been proven reliable,
07:12 they've ironed out all the kinks,
07:13 and then they're happy to stick it in this car
07:15 and know that it'll last 20 or 30 years
07:17 or something like that.
07:18 Okay, now what about safety technology?
07:19 Well, it's gonna be a very brief discussion
07:21 because it doesn't have very much.
07:23 So you've got two airbags, driver and front passenger.
07:25 You also have stability control,
07:27 which they integrated into this not that long ago.
07:30 It is worth pointing out that Toyota actually spent
07:32 a whole lot of money on the ute version of this,
07:34 integrating side airbags
07:35 so they could get a five star safety rating.
07:37 The reason it does is a lot of mines
07:40 and commercial industry use that vehicle,
07:43 and a lot of them move to a requirement
07:45 for side airbags and also five star ratings.
07:47 That didn't flow onto the SUV though,
07:49 so this has no side airbags.
07:51 It actually doesn't really have anything else.
07:53 There's no front or rear parking sensors,
07:55 there's no rear view camera,
07:56 even though you've got a color screen here.
07:58 So when it comes to reversing,
07:59 it really is only the spare tire
08:01 that is your parking sensor effectively.
08:03 You can't see anything,
08:04 you've gotta get someone to help you
08:05 if you're sort of parking in and around town.
08:07 I will point out though something really interesting.
08:09 I've noticed this just clever little thing here.
08:12 It is just one of those bits that I mentioned earlier
08:14 where over time they would have discovered
08:16 that this rear view mirror
08:18 was perhaps not standing the test of time.
08:20 So they've installed this tiny bit of rubber
08:22 that sits on the back of it
08:23 and prevents it from bending the main frame on the mirror.
08:26 So kind of gives you an idea of the things they do
08:28 to add durability to this car.
08:30 Righto, let's talk about practicality
08:32 and where are you gonna charge your devices
08:34 or have your devices running?
08:35 Because in a vehicle like this,
08:37 you might have nav and other sort of external bits
08:39 that are mounted to the car.
08:41 So you've got one USB port
08:42 attached to the infotainment system.
08:44 That supplies your music but can also charge.
08:46 Down here, you've got two 2.1 amp charging points
08:49 and then a 12 volt outlet.
08:51 But there is also one more 12 volt.
08:52 It is just here and it's actually a cigarette lighter
08:55 as well.
08:56 I remember when I was a kid,
08:56 I was sitting in dad's car
08:57 and I didn't really know what this did.
08:58 I pushed it in, it came out and I touched it
09:00 and like incinerated my finger.
09:03 But it is interesting that this is one of the few cars
09:05 on the market that still actually has a cigarette lighter.
09:07 Even has an ashtray there for your durries.
09:10 I know how much you tradies like your durries.
09:12 So your ashtray's there
09:13 and then you can also store your durries over there
09:15 if you want.
09:15 In terms of other storage,
09:17 you need to put your phone somewhere.
09:18 It slots in beautifully down the front there
09:20 while it's charging.
09:21 And then on your cup holders,
09:22 I've got my floral coffee cup here.
09:24 It doesn't really fit in.
09:25 So you've got to prop it up with your keys.
09:27 Otherwise the lid will come off.
09:28 But it does fit just a standard size bottle in there.
09:31 So the console here has like a coin tray type thing
09:34 that comes out.
09:35 And then the storage is huge.
09:36 It goes all the way down there.
09:37 So you can see for reference how big that is.
09:40 There is a map pocket down the side here.
09:42 It's not going to fit your bottle though.
09:43 Although the passenger side one
09:45 has a bottle holder inside it.
09:46 And then finally you have a pretty generously
09:48 sized glove box.
09:50 Okay, let's talk comfort.
09:51 So the good news is that air conditioning is now standard.
09:53 It's not optional on these things anymore.
09:55 Up the top there, you have a lever here that controls
09:58 which vents the air comes out of.
10:00 You've got a recirculation lever beneath it.
10:02 You can also go from cold to hot.
10:04 Now this is interesting.
10:05 So you've got your fan speed controller here,
10:07 but then behind it is the AC controller.
10:09 So you can actually determine how much the air conditioning
10:12 is involved in the air that comes out.
10:14 So it's quite an antiquated setup,
10:16 but it actually works really well.
10:17 And the air conditioner in this is killer.
10:19 It is for hot Australian summers.
10:22 This does a great job.
10:23 Seats themselves, they're interesting.
10:25 The top is like this sort of padded vinyl type stuff.
10:30 The bottom, I don't know what material it is,
10:31 but it gives me goosebumps when I touch it.
10:34 It's kind of weird.
10:35 It's, what is it, velour?
10:36 I don't know what that trim is, but it's bloody weird.
10:38 So seat is fully manually adjustable
10:41 for forward and backward motion.
10:43 And then the backrest can also go forwards and backwards.
10:45 You'll notice here on the steering wheel,
10:46 there's no controls for the radio.
10:48 So that's all manually adjustable.
10:49 There's no auto lights or auto wipers,
10:51 but the steering wheel itself offers
10:53 tilt and reach adjustment.
10:55 So in the back seat of the 70, I'm a little surprised.
10:57 There isn't actually a great deal of leg room here.
11:00 So you can see my knees are pretty much wedged
11:01 into that seat.
11:02 Yes, I have my seat quite far back,
11:04 but I thought there'd be a little bit more room.
11:06 Heaps of toe room though, and headroom is really decent.
11:09 Not a great deal of creature comforts here.
11:11 So you have mat pockets in the back of the seats.
11:13 There's no air vents here, but I can see,
11:15 but you've got grab handles to get in.
11:17 This is really working out well for you guys
11:20 that love your diaries,
11:21 because there are ashtrays in the doors as well.
11:24 So you can all have one while you're driving.
11:27 Also on top of that, you have manual door locks
11:29 on the actual doors themselves.
11:31 This is part of the reason
11:33 it doesn't have a five-star safety rating.
11:35 These are from the 70s.
11:36 It is just a lap seatbelt, so no sash there at all.
11:39 And there's no ISOFIX points or child anchorage points.
11:42 Okay, let's talk cargo space.
11:44 Now, I'll show you how this door works first.
11:46 So it's split in two sections.
11:48 You've got a little handle here
11:49 that then locks into position.
11:51 Inside the actual door, you have another grab handle,
11:53 a separate lock for it, and also a release lever.
11:56 And then you open the second part of the door
11:58 by pulling that.
11:59 So, welcome to the cavernous cargo space.
12:02 You can see your two speakers there
12:04 that form part of that four-speaker sound system.
12:06 Off to the right-hand side,
12:07 we have a little cubby hole
12:09 for the windscreen washer fluid for the rear,
12:12 plus these side windows that pop out.
12:14 Then we also have a cubby hole on the other side,
12:17 which contains the jack.
12:18 Now, we don't have a cargo volume figure for this.
12:21 We've looked literally up and down everywhere.
12:23 So if we do find one,
12:24 we'll update it in the comments section below.
12:26 But I'll show you how it fits our cargo.
12:28 So laptop bag in there, and then suitcase in here.
12:32 You can see it's a massive, massive space.
12:34 You can actually increase it further
12:36 by moving that second roll.
12:38 I'll show you how that works.
12:39 So around here, all you do is drop the backrest.
12:43 So that folds there.
12:44 And then you've got a separate lever here
12:46 that tumbles that out of the way.
12:47 And then you have a flat load space
12:50 that is pretty versatile, if you ask me.
12:52 Man, what a day.
12:54 It feels quintessentially Australian.
12:56 We're in the 70 Series on the road.
12:58 It's bloody hot outside.
12:59 The air conditioning's cranked.
13:01 Everyone's happy.
13:02 So what is powering this beast?
13:03 So it's a four and a half litre,
13:05 turbocharged V8 diesel engine.
13:08 Makes 151 kilowatts of power and 430 newton metres of torque.
13:13 And it's mated exclusively to a five-speed manual.
13:16 So no automatics and no six speeds available
13:18 across the range.
13:19 Now, this is an interesting point, right?
13:20 The diesel, it's a V8 diesel.
13:23 Only 400-ish newton metres of torque.
13:25 It really isn't a great deal.
13:27 And there is a reason for that.
13:28 This goes back to all the other points I made earlier
13:30 about them using parts they know will last the test of time.
13:34 And this engine is just that.
13:35 It is absolutely unstressed.
13:37 You can go and get aftermarket
13:40 automatic transmissions installed.
13:41 You can go get tunes on these
13:43 that bump it up to five, six, seven,
13:45 800 newton metres of torque.
13:47 And then you're getting well within the range
13:48 of where this engine needs to be.
13:50 But here in stock form,
13:52 it literally just does the job
13:54 and it does the job day in, day out.
13:55 Now, what does that feel like behind the wheel?
13:57 So we're doing about 60 now.
13:59 I'll drop it back to third and punch it.
14:01 Look, it's not the world's quickest car,
14:06 but it really just sounds cool while it's going.
14:09 You can hear the V8 murmuring in the background
14:12 and it just picks up nicely,
14:13 pushes you back in the seat lightly
14:15 and you feel like you're actually getting somewhere.
14:17 So what's the gearbox actually like?
14:18 Well, look, you could literally give this to,
14:21 she never watches my videos.
14:24 So my wife, who doesn't drive manuals,
14:27 and I genuinely think you could just drive it.
14:30 It is really just dummy proof.
14:32 So that means that when you are tootling about,
14:35 you really don't have to think about anything.
14:36 You just swap through the cogs,
14:38 nice and tight gear shifts.
14:40 Yeah, it is just fuss free.
14:42 So Toyota doesn't provide a zero to 100 time for this,
14:45 but just so it's like the rest of our reviews,
14:47 we thought we'd put it up against a stopwatch anyway.
14:49 Let's talk fuel economy.
15:05 So Toyota provides an official figure
15:08 of 10.7 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres.
15:11 This doesn't actually have a trip computer,
15:12 so there's no way of verifying that
15:14 without brimming the tank and all that kind of thing.
15:16 But to give you an idea of how much mileage
15:18 you should expect, it has a 130 litre fuel tank.
15:21 So you should be getting around 1200 litres per tank.
15:24 If you go to the troop carrier,
15:25 that actually has a bigger fuel tank.
15:27 Again, it's 180 litres.
15:28 So there is more than enough fuel there to keep you going.
15:32 It is just a little bit thirsty because here,
15:35 if I jump up to 100 k's an hour in fifth,
15:38 watch that tacho, we go past 80,
15:41 90,
15:45 and then 100.
15:49 We're sitting at 2000 RPM.
15:50 So you can see why it uses a fair bit of fuel.
15:53 If you're doing a lot of highway driving,
15:55 it's just going to be sitting up there.
15:56 It would be nice if they fitted this with a six speed,
15:58 that'd bump it down nicely.
15:59 So you may have heard all that noise there
16:01 when we were at a hundred.
16:02 There is a lot of wind noise,
16:04 mainly coming around that snorkel area.
16:06 But yeah, the sand insulation isn't fantastic.
16:09 You don't really get that much road noise.
16:10 It is just mainly wind noise at highway speeds
16:13 that comes into the cabin.
16:14 Now, what about the ride?
16:16 The ride is interesting.
16:17 So it's leaf sprung at the rear
16:19 and coil sprung at the front.
16:21 And look, it's okay.
16:22 It sort of throws you about a little bit,
16:24 but it's surprisingly comfortable
16:25 given a lot of utes that are leaf sprung
16:28 tend to buck about a lot.
16:29 This has that tendency,
16:30 but it's on the comfortable side of throwing you around.
16:33 Now let's talk handling.
16:35 Yes, I am very aware that it's not a sports car.
16:38 We've got our little corner here.
16:39 Oh, that's fun.
16:42 Look, I mean, it's doing not that fast through the corner,
16:45 but it's fun nevertheless.
16:46 It has a fair bit of body roll.
16:48 The steering doesn't really have a great deal of feel.
16:51 It actually feels a bit like that Gladiator
16:52 we drove recently.
16:53 If you want to watch that review, click up here.
16:55 It's kind of quite vague in terms of steering response.
16:58 Let's talk visibility.
16:59 Look, out the front, it's great.
17:00 I'm sitting up nice and high here.
17:02 Big bonnet bulges there,
17:03 and I can see down to the corners of the car.
17:05 Down the sides, it's good.
17:07 Obviously the wing mirrors are annoying
17:08 'cause they're manually adjustable,
17:09 no electric adjustment,
17:10 but once they're set, they're fine.
17:12 Visibility out the rear is not very good though.
17:13 Those headrests in the second row
17:15 pretty much block most of the vision,
17:17 but you can use that tire as a guide when parking.
17:20 And if you are doing any towing,
17:21 a 3,500 kilogram brake to towing capacity.
17:25 I think this would be handling three and a half tons
17:27 a whole lot better than most dual cab utes on the market.
17:29 Finally, turning circle, 12.6 meters.
17:33 It's actually not terrible.
17:35 I mean, it's not the world's smallest turning circle,
17:37 but for the most part, it's actually pretty acceptable.
17:41 Okay, let's do some light off riding.
17:42 I'll run you through the specs first.
17:44 So basically I mentioned earlier
17:46 that this is predominantly a two wheel drive,
17:48 but you can switch to high range four wheel drive.
17:51 You can also do low range four wheel drive,
17:53 and those automatic locking hubs
17:55 will take care of everything for you.
17:57 You've also got front and rear differential locks.
17:59 You have a ground clearance of 230 millimeters.
18:02 You have an approach angle of 33 degrees,
18:04 which is the angle of the face
18:05 you can approach before you hit anything,
18:07 and a departure angle of 23 degrees,
18:09 which is the same, but in reverse.
18:11 And then finally you have a 700 millimeter waiting depth.
18:14 Now it is worth noting,
18:16 especially with the front and rear differential locks,
18:18 that you can't use those on sealed surfaces.
18:20 So if you do want a better explanation of why
18:23 and how all that works,
18:24 click up here to watch
18:25 our four wheel drive controls explained video.
18:28 Now I'm gonna do something a little different here.
18:29 So normally we would just go up in four wheel drive,
18:31 high range, and you'd see how it works.
18:33 Given this thing has all terrain tires
18:35 and it's a bit of a beast,
18:36 and this is a very basic off-road course,
18:38 I wanna show you how strong the engine
18:40 and the reduction gearing system is.
18:42 We're gonna go up basically in first gear, low range,
18:45 and I'm just gonna let go of the throttle,
18:47 and you'll see what happens.
18:48 So to engage low range, it's one down to four high,
18:51 then a lift to neutral,
18:53 and then finally down to four low.
18:56 I'm gonna clear just the bottom log first,
18:59 just with a bit of throttle,
19:00 'cause if it gets stuck on the bottom,
19:01 it just doesn't really go anywhere.
19:03 But after that, I'm just gonna let go of the throttle,
19:04 and watch what the revs do here.
19:07 Okay, so clearing the bottom one.
19:09 There it is there.
19:10 I'm now completely out of the throttle,
19:13 and you can see the revs have dived down.
19:15 The car is now just using the sheer torque of the engine
19:19 to get it up here in first gear
19:21 without any throttle whatsoever.
19:24 That is really impressive.
19:25 The last car I was able to do this in was the old Defender,
19:28 but this just shows you how much torque is available here
19:30 when you have the right gearing in place.
19:32 Really impressive.
19:34 Okay, now let's go downhill.
19:35 I'm gonna throttle on a bit so we can hurry this up.
19:37 I'm gonna go down here in first.
19:39 We don't have hill descent control,
19:41 but this should give you an idea
19:42 of how it actually descends this
19:44 without needing to use something like hill descent control.
19:47 Okay, here we go.
19:48 So I'll line it up, 230 mil of ground clearance.
19:49 It's gonna be more than enough to clear this stuff,
19:51 but what I love here, first gear coming down here,
19:54 it's just crawling beautifully.
19:56 If I want a little bit more pace,
19:57 I can just roll into the throttle slightly,
20:00 and then if I wanna slow it down,
20:01 I just roll straight out of the throttle.
20:03 This is ideally what low range is for
20:05 and why I prefer something like this
20:07 over a hill descent control,
20:08 because ultimately you have more control
20:10 over what the car is doing,
20:12 and you can control the descent speed a whole lot easier.
20:14 So Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series.
20:17 Look, I'm not gonna pretend for one second
20:19 that anything about this is modern.
20:22 Let's just get that out of the way,
20:23 but I know that this serves a purpose,
20:25 and for so many people, these things are a workhorse.
20:28 They're dependable.
20:28 They need to work every single day,
20:30 and by kind of perfecting the formula ages ago
20:34 and not changing it, they've guaranteed that.
20:36 When you make a new car today,
20:37 you have to do engineering,
20:38 and you have to just do constant cycles
20:41 to make sure things work and they stay working,
20:43 and that's hard to get right
20:44 every single time you engineer a new car,
20:46 whereas these guys have done it once a long time ago,
20:48 and they just keep doing the same thing.
20:50 So still built in Japan
20:51 and still very dependable and reliable,
20:53 and look, the best thing is,
20:54 while they are expensive to buy to start with,
20:56 they hold their value extremely well.
20:57 So even if you've got one with 100, 200,000 Ks on the clock,
21:00 they still are worth something down the track.
21:02 Now, let me know in the comments section below,
21:04 do you think that these things should exist,
21:06 or are we done with them?
21:07 Do you think they are iconic and should stay on?
21:09 Let me know what your thoughts are,
21:10 and let me know when you think production will end,
21:12 because we surely can't be too far away from that.
21:14 Now, if you did enjoy this video,

21:20 so you can find out every single time
21:22 we drive one of these things,
21:23 but until next time, take it easy.
