00:00 G'day, I'm Paul, so we've worked our way
00:01 through the Ranger lineup,
00:02 but now it is time for the Everest.
00:05 And we're kicking off with the Everest Platinum,
00:08 which is the top specification version
00:10 of the new Ford Everest.
00:12 Now this competes with things like the Toyota Prado,
00:15 the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, the Isuzu MU-X.
00:18 It is kind of in a market here
00:20 where you have ute-based SUVs.
00:23 Now, this being the top specification,
00:24 it is just under $80,000.
00:26 It has crept up in price,
00:28 but it does come with a stack of features
00:29 that I'll run you through shortly.
00:31 If that's too expensive though,
00:32 the whole range kicks off at not much over $50,000.
00:36 So they really do have a lot of options there
00:38 within that price band.
00:39 Today, we're gonna do a detailed review of this SUV.
00:41 So if you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:44 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:46 or if you're on YouTube,
00:46 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:48 And if you haven't done so already,
00:49 subscribe to our channel,
00:50 press the bell icon,
00:51 'cause that's gonna tell you
00:52 every single time we review a Platinum.
00:54 Let's talk design.
00:57 So you've got six external colors to pick from,
00:59 all but white is gonna cost you just under $700.
01:02 Now, let me just run you through the dimensions quickly.
01:05 So Everest has grown.
01:06 So it sits on a longer wheelbase,
01:08 so it's 50 mil longer,
01:09 and it also sits on a wider track, 50 mil wider.
01:11 And that's important,
01:13 'cause I always, whenever you see an Everest on the road,
01:15 like the previous generation,
01:16 it always kinda looks weird up the top there.
01:19 This actually looks like it has a decent stance to it now,
01:21 and it really has quite a presence out on the road.
01:24 I love the treatment here with the Platinum as well.
01:25 So I could take or leave the lettering on the bonnet there,
01:28 but I do love this sort of brushed aluminum look
01:30 and the 3D elements on that grill.
01:32 Big Ford logo there as well,
01:33 with a camera up the front
01:35 and a little washer built into that.
01:37 Down the bottom here,
01:38 you've got radar cruise control,
01:40 parking sensors as well,
01:41 and then cooling for the V6 diesel here.
01:44 Now, I did notice something here that I wanna call out,
01:47 and that is the fit and finish on this bonnet.
01:49 We actually noticed it on a Ranger
01:51 that we borrowed the other day
01:52 that I hadn't noticed previously,
01:53 but you can see it doesn't sit flush with that.
01:55 So I don't know whether that's been not fitted well
01:57 at the factory or something like that,
01:58 but yeah, hopefully this isn't a sign of things
02:01 to come in terms of reliability.
02:03 Headlights, you have a set of full matrix LED headlights
02:07 with that C-clamp LED daytime running light.
02:09 You have an LED fog light down the bottom there as well.
02:12 Let's whip around to the side, 21-inch alloy wheels.
02:16 These are Whoppers.
02:17 Now, this sits on a highway terrain tire,
02:18 but you can get an off-road pack for Everest as well.
02:21 It comes with all terrains,
02:23 and I think that's gonna be important
02:24 if you do any off-road driving.
02:26 The all-terrains are the ones to go for.
02:27 They will come with a smaller wheel as well.
02:29 The other thing with the 21-inch wheel,
02:30 these brakes look almost comically small
02:33 when you look at this from the side,
02:34 and I know that it's obviously not much
02:36 you can do about that, but yeah,
02:37 the bigger the wheel you go, the smaller the brakes look,
02:40 and in this instance, they kinda just look
02:41 a little bit too small in my opinion.
02:43 Up the top here, you don't have that sort of black cladding.
02:45 This is all body-colored,
02:46 and I think this looks really nice.
02:47 And this color as well, I really like that.
02:49 V6 badge on the side here.
02:51 If you do go for the four-cylinder, that says Bi-Turbo.
02:54 Little bit of that brushed aluminum there as well
02:56 with some extrusions there that expose this element.
02:59 This is hydroformed, so you do actually have
03:01 space in here for cooling,
03:02 and this is also where they fit
03:03 some of the components for the engine.
03:05 Just like the Ranger, the V6 Everest,
03:07 and also the four-cylinder,
03:09 you can fit with a second battery
03:10 under the bonnet there as well, should you so desire.
03:13 Up the top here, you have body color for that wing mirror.
03:15 Indicator built into there.
03:17 360 camera on the side here.
03:19 Very powerful LED light here as well,
03:21 'cause this has 360-degree zone lighting.
03:24 More platinum badges on the side there.
03:26 Side steps.
03:27 I do like that this has a little bit of color to it,
03:29 because in the Ranger, if you don't go for the Raptor,
03:32 this is all just kind of very plasticky
03:33 and not very nice looking, but still, I don't know.
03:36 Plastic just doesn't really do it for me.
03:38 I'm just wondering if there's another material
03:39 they could have used down here
03:40 just to give this a little bit more presence, I reckon.
03:43 You've got privacy glass, roof rails up the top here,
03:46 and then come around to the back.
03:48 Platinum again, just so no one forgets
03:50 that you're driving the Platinum.
03:51 LED taillights, so that wraps around the side there.
03:54 Quite a good looking taillight at nighttime as well.
03:56 Four-wheel drive down the bottom there,
03:58 and then Everest down here as well.
04:00 This now has a 3 1/2 ton brake to towing capacity.
04:04 Look, if you are gonna be towing 3 1/2 tons,
04:05 it is the V6 that you wanna go for.
04:07 It really has the punch that you need
04:09 to tow something that size.
04:10 And if you do get the tow package from Ford,
04:12 it actually comes with an integrated brake controller
04:14 inside the cabin as well.
04:15 That also allows you to configure the size of the trailer
04:18 so that you can also have support for blind spot monitoring
04:21 within that length of the trailer,
04:22 which I think is a really cool feature.
04:24 In addition to that, you have camera down here,
04:26 Ford badge just here, high-mounted stop lamp here,
04:29 and then a aerial up the top there.
04:32 The other thing I wanted to call out as well
04:33 is that this, unlike the Ranger, gets coil sprung rear.
04:37 You also have a Watts linkage too,
04:38 so it should mean that it actually rides quite nicely.
04:40 So I'll be keen to go for a drive and see how it performs.
04:43 Now, let me know in the comments section below,
04:45 do you like the design of this?
04:46 Do you think that the sort of increase in dimensions
04:48 has actually helped it?
04:49 Let me know what you reckon down there.
04:50 So we are inside the Everest.
04:52 We'll start off with the key.
04:55 So you have unlock, lock, the boot button there.
04:58 On the back of it, you have the Ford logo there.
05:00 It's a proximity sensing key,
05:02 so you can leave that in your pocket.
05:03 Once you're inside, you have a push button start here
05:05 attached to the steering column.
05:06 So let's talk about the design first.
05:08 So if you've seen our other Ranger reviews,
05:10 this kind of looks very familiar to that,
05:12 but there are a few other design highlights here
05:14 that I actually quite like
05:15 and that are unique here to Everest.
05:16 So you get wood grain here on the dashboard.
05:18 I think that actually looks really nice.
05:20 A little bit of this aluminium strip there as well,
05:22 and then a platinum badge up the top there.
05:24 That wood grain continues around the door here as well.
05:27 So really sort of nice looking setup.
05:29 And I just love the size and appearance
05:31 of this big screen in the center here.
05:33 So what about your touch points?
05:35 Nice and soft in the center there,
05:38 soft on the door as well.
05:39 How soft are they?
05:41 We've got our durometer.
05:42 We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
05:44 If you want to see how this car compares to others
05:46 that we've tested before,
05:47 look at the link in the description below.
05:48 Now, build quality,
05:50 given the bonnet situation over there, what's it like?
05:53 Yeah, a little bit of flex there.
05:58 That's a little bit loose there as well.
05:59 Let's try our door.
06:00 (door creaking)
06:03 Door sounds really nice and solid.
06:04 So let's talk about infotainment.
06:06 I mentioned that this is kind of the centerpiece
06:07 to the interior here.
06:09 So it's a 12 inch display
06:10 with the SYNC 4 operating system.
06:12 I have mentioned this in our previous Ranger reviews.
06:14 I feel like the bigger version of this screen
06:16 is just a little bit slower and laggier
06:19 than the smaller 10 inch version.
06:20 You'll notice when you're sort of going through
06:22 some of the menus, it's fine now,
06:23 but if they're not preloaded,
06:25 they just take a little bit of time
06:27 to sort of wake up and start doing their thing.
06:29 Once it is moving, it's fine.
06:31 And these controls down here are a little bit tricky to use
06:33 while you're on the move.
06:35 So when you go to click on them,
06:36 you need to be quite accurate with your clicks.
06:40 Otherwise it doesn't actually register.
06:42 You'll see there, I've really got to spend a lot of time
06:45 actually clicking on that.
06:46 And it is hard to do while you're driving.
06:47 So a couple of little things I can fix there,
06:50 hopefully with a software update,
06:52 because it is capable of over the air updates
06:54 down the track as well.
06:55 This has inbuilt wifi as well as a hotspot.
06:58 So you can get other people to connect into the car
07:00 if you need to.
07:01 It has emergency services built into it as well.
07:04 So it is really quite a comprehensive system.
07:06 Satellite navigation comes standard on this as well.
07:09 That is if you don't have a smartphone paired to it,
07:12 but in terms of your smartphone connectivity,
07:14 not only do you have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto,
07:16 both of those are wireless.
07:17 So I'll show you what Apple CarPlay looks like.
07:19 So there it is there.
07:20 You can adjust the size of that screen too.
07:22 So you can increase the size of your
07:24 shortcut buttons down here,
07:26 or you can go down the path of having
07:28 a bigger smartphone mirroring display there.
07:30 And this is what Android Auto looks like.
07:32 So again, similar setup.
07:34 You can adjust the size of that screen if you want to.
07:36 So pretty impressive.
07:37 In terms of audio, you have AM, FM, DAB, digital radio.
07:42 You also have a 12 speaker B&O Play branded sound system.
07:46 It's a really good sound system.
07:47 And for something like this size of car,
07:49 it's actually pretty impressive how much bass you get
07:51 and how immersive it is.
07:53 So I really like that setup.
07:55 Now, also different to Ranger outside of Raptor,
07:58 this actually gets the big digital display
08:00 here ahead of the driver.
08:01 So 12.3 inch display, fully animated.
08:03 And as you move through the drive modes,
08:05 all of that changes as you go.
08:06 So really like that setup and it looks very high end
08:09 and premium as well.
08:10 Now, what about your safety tech?
08:11 Obviously, big family SUV, that stuff is important.
08:14 In addition to the nine airbags and a center airbag as well,
08:17 which is what they needed for the five star safety rating,
08:19 you have autonomous emergency braking
08:21 with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
08:23 You have an auto dimming rear vision mirror.
08:25 You have a blind spot monitor built into the wing mirror
08:27 over there.
08:28 And as I mentioned earlier,
08:29 if you do have a trailer hooked up
08:30 and you set the length of the trailer,
08:32 that blind spot monitor will actually cover
08:34 the length of the trailer as well,
08:35 which is a really, really good feature.
08:37 In addition to that, you have radar cruise control
08:39 with the semi-autonomous steering function.
08:41 We'll actually test that out later on
08:42 and see how well it performs in our banked bowl.
08:45 And then you also have rear cross traffic alert
08:47 on the parking front.
08:48 You have front and rear parking sensors
08:50 and the 360 cameras.
08:51 I'll show you what that looks like.
08:52 Here it is there.
08:53 So quality of that is pretty decent.
08:55 You can see out the front there pretty clearly.
08:58 This is your top down view.
08:59 It is a little bit sort of warped
09:01 on those outer edges there
09:02 and you don't really get the best sort of angles there.
09:04 But if we go down here to the different views,
09:06 you get the sonar set up there.
09:09 You can see our suitcases at the back.
09:10 So you get those little lines come up.
09:13 This is a wide angle view of the front.
09:15 This is your view of the back.
09:16 And then you also have a trailer hitch view as well.
09:20 So really impressive set up there
09:21 in terms of camera coverage.
09:22 So practicality, we'll start off with the connectivity.
09:25 Down the bottom here, you've got a USB-C outlet,
09:27 USB-A outlet.
09:28 In the center console, you have a 12 volt outlet.
09:31 And then up at the top here,
09:31 you have a USB-A outlet for dash cam.
09:35 Where are you gonna put your phone?
09:36 Well, there is actually wireless phone charging down here.
09:38 So you can rest your phone on that charging pad
09:40 or alternatively, you can kind of put it wherever you want.
09:42 There is even a little chip holder down there
09:44 that can rest your phone in as well.
09:46 Now, coffee cups.
09:47 So if you do have a pool size coffee cup,
09:49 it fits into there without any problems.
09:51 By the way, when we were in the States recently
09:53 reviewing the new Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV,
09:57 American pool had a much bigger coffee cup.
09:59 So you can see that you can get a variety of things in there.
10:02 Now, teeth in there as well
10:05 to hold your bottle and coffee cup.
10:07 So you can see that that won't move around too much.
10:09 And then put the bottle inside the door
10:11 and we'll try a big bottle as well.
10:13 See how that goes.
10:15 Yes, that fits inside the door too.
10:17 Very good.
10:18 What about your other storage?
10:18 So over here, you actually have cup holders
10:21 in front of the air vent.
10:22 So I think that is a great feature.
10:24 And it means that if you do have a hot drink on a cold day,
10:27 the heater will keep it nice and warm
10:29 and vice versa if it is cold.
10:30 You have one on the driver's side,
10:32 one of the passenger side as well.
10:33 Center console, nice and big in there.
10:35 You have a little storage tray there
10:37 for coins and odds and ends.
10:39 Glove box, pretty reasonably sized.
10:42 You have a secondary glove box up the top here.
10:45 And then finally, you have a sunglasses holder
10:48 right up the top of the cabin as well.
10:49 So comfort, you've got a fair few
10:51 sort of little bits and bobs here.
10:53 So dual zone automatic climate control up the front here.
10:56 In addition to that, you have heated and cooled seats
10:59 for the front row, heated steering wheel.
11:01 The seats themselves are really comfy.
11:04 So they hug you in nicely.
11:05 You've got these perforations here for cooling.
11:07 You also have a platinum badge up the top there as well,
11:10 which is pretty cool.
11:11 The seats are fully electrically adjustable
11:13 for the driver and front passenger.
11:15 You can go forwards, backwards.
11:16 Backrest can go forwards, backwards.
11:18 Front of the seat can go up.
11:20 Back of the seat can go up.
11:21 And then you also have lumbar adjustment as well.
11:24 You have three-way memory for the driver.
11:26 Steering wheel offers both tilts and reach adjustment.
11:29 And on our reach test, all of this stuff
11:31 is easy to reach while you're driving.
11:34 Okay, second row of the Everest.
11:35 What do we reckon?
11:37 Look, knee room is pretty good.
11:39 I have my seat pretty far back,
11:40 so that's actually not too bad.
11:42 Toe room is okay.
11:44 Headroom is not too bad.
11:46 So the interesting thing is when I was in the back
11:48 of the Ranger, it was okay.
11:50 Raptor was a little tighter, I think, because of the seats.
11:52 But look, this is okay.
11:54 I was hoping for maybe a little bit more room back here,
11:57 but that'll be fine.
11:58 In terms of your creature comforts,
11:59 you do have heated seats here for the two outboard seats.
12:02 You have blower controls here for this zone.
12:05 You have USB-C and USB-A connectivity.
12:08 You have mat pockets just there.
12:10 You've got the center armrest here
12:11 that you can rest your elbow on,
12:13 but you also have two cup holders in there.
12:15 Pop the bottle in there if you need to.
12:17 The bottle can then go inside the door,
12:19 so you've got room there for odds and ends.
12:21 Your air vents are located just up here,
12:24 so you can put those on your face if you want to.
12:27 It's actually quite a handy feature
12:28 because if you have a rearward-facing baby seat in here,
12:31 often the air vents that are located down here
12:34 don't really work that well,
12:35 whereas that can blow directly down onto the baby.
12:37 So I think that's actually a much better way
12:40 to be doing things.
12:41 ISOFIX points on the two outboard seats
12:43 with three top tether points as well.
12:45 And what about our window test?
12:48 So it's auto up and down.
12:50 Boom, all the way down.
12:51 That is very impressive there from Ford Everest.
12:54 So KFC lovers, if you're out there like me,
12:57 can you fit an adult KFC lover in the third row?
13:00 So you have a couple of ways of folding this,
13:03 but the easiest way to access the third row
13:05 is fold and push it all the way forward.
13:07 And then let's try climbing in here.
13:10 Let's see how this goes.
13:11 I'll also bring this back as well.
13:14 So, it's not right.
13:18 Let me just go forward a touch.
13:19 I'll bring it up to there.
13:22 There we go.
13:22 So in this setting, my knees are kind of,
13:25 they have just enough room.
13:26 Toe room is tight, but okay.
13:29 And headroom, my hair is sort of just touching the ceiling.
13:32 It's actually not terrible though.
13:34 I thought it was gonna be a whole lot worse.
13:35 So, got storage off to the sides here.
13:37 You've got a 12 volt outlet over here as well.
13:40 Now, Igor, can you just show us how much knee room
13:43 there is there in front of the seat?
13:44 So you can see that it is a little compromised there,
13:47 but I think if you wanted to fit a KFC loving adult
13:51 like myself in the back here,
13:52 it would be fine for short trips.
13:54 Kids certainly wouldn't have any issues here at all.
13:56 Then on top of that, these two seats
13:57 also have top tether points as well.
13:59 So you can put baby seats in,
14:02 all five seats in this car,
14:04 which I think is pretty awesome.
14:06 But let's see how much boot room there is,
14:08 'cause I think that's probably
14:08 gonna be a little compromised.
14:10 So let me show you how much room you do have.
14:13 So behind the third row,
14:15 you have just under 300 litres of cargo space.
14:18 The reason this is so limited is,
14:20 in pretty much all of these,
14:22 I guess SUVs based on dual cab utes,
14:24 they try and push that third row as far back as they can.
14:27 And it does mean that you get limited space here.
14:29 So we'll try and load our bags in in just a second,
14:31 but you do have 12 volt outlet off to the side here,
14:34 little LED light there.
14:35 Have a look at this.
14:36 I thought this was interesting.
14:37 So under floor here,
14:38 you have a little bit of storage there for odds and ends.
14:40 Here they show it's snorkels, boots, and a t-shirt,
14:44 but this is where you're gonna find
14:46 access to your spare wheel.
14:48 It is a full-size spare under there.
14:49 You remove this cap, but they also have this,
14:51 and this is totally over-engineered,
14:53 but I just love it anyway.
14:54 So you have these little things here to hold all this up
14:58 while you're changing your tire
15:00 or doing whatever you need to do.
15:01 And then all of your tools are under here.
15:03 So really nice little setup there.
15:05 I thought that was quite impressive.
15:07 Get this out of the way.
15:08 We'll try and put our bags in now.
15:09 We'll see how that's gonna go.
15:10 Wondering if we can fit our suitcase in.
15:12 So laptop fits in there.
15:14 Suitcase, ah, easy, no dramas at all.
15:18 So it's actually not too bad there
15:21 in terms of practicality of that storage space.
15:23 This is also cool as well.
15:25 So I mentioned earlier,
15:26 we just reviewed the Mercedes EQS SUV.
15:29 It's probably gonna be over 300 grand
15:31 when it gets to Australia,
15:32 and the third row was manual on that.
15:34 This on the other hand is electric,
15:37 so that just disappears out of the way.
15:38 You can see those top tether points there as well.
15:41 With that out of the way,
15:42 you have just under 900 litres of space.
15:43 I'll show you what that looks like.
15:45 So bag in there, big bag in there.
15:48 So no dramas there at all.
15:50 Now, if you do want even more space,
15:52 what you can do is fold this down.
15:55 And then once that second row is folded,
15:57 it's pretty much flat.
15:58 It climbs up a little bit there,
15:59 but you have just over 1800 litres of space back here.
16:02 So we have just hit the road in the Ford Everest.
16:07 Look, I think this is the engine
16:09 this car needed the whole time.
16:10 So turbocharged V6 diesel.
16:12 We've tested this engine in a Ranger as well,
16:15 and we're pretty impressed with it,
16:16 especially on the dyno.
16:18 If you haven't seen that video before,
16:19 click up here to watch that.
16:20 We actually stuck the Raptor,
16:22 the V6 Wildtrak and the four-cylinder Wildtrak
16:24 on the dyno to see how they would perform.
16:26 And the V6 diesel actually really came up nicely.
16:29 It does feel like it's torque limited
16:30 in first and potentially second,
16:32 but once it gets up and moving,
16:33 it really has some mumbo.
16:35 And that is because it is a really decent engine.
16:37 So three litre turbocharged V6 diesel,
16:40 it makes 184 kilowatts of power
16:42 and 600 newton metres of torque.
16:44 That is a fairly decent chunk,
16:45 and it's all mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
16:50 Now the transmission, it has undergone some changes
16:52 over the previous generation of this car,
16:54 and the V6 has its own calibration as well.
16:57 That means that when you are driving along,
16:59 you sink the slipper in,
17:00 dials back really nice and quickly,
17:03 and it is such a smooth engine.
17:04 It is just so nice and exactly where it needs to be.
17:07 Suits the character of the car perfectly.
17:09 Now, typically what's happening is you select
17:12 where it's sending the torque.
17:14 So for efficiency,
17:15 you can run it in two-wheel drive high range,
17:17 or you can run it in four-wheel drive automatic.
17:19 If you remember the previous generation of Everest,
17:21 unless you specifically got the rear-wheel drive version,
17:24 it was basically permanent all-wheel drive.
17:26 Here you actually have the choice
17:27 of selecting which drive mode you want.
17:30 Then in addition to that, you have four high and four low,
17:32 and we'll do a little bit of light off-roading later.
17:33 I'll run through those along with these drive modes as well
17:36 to show you how all that works.
17:38 But for the most part, it is a very straightforward setup.
17:40 And for me, I'd probably just run it in four auto
17:43 the rest of the time, because that is all you need.
17:45 You really don't need to be faffing around
17:46 with two-wheel drive high range
17:48 like you do in the Raptor
17:49 if you're doing any fun, drifty things.
17:51 Now let's talk fuel economy.
17:52 Ford claims 8.5 litres per 100 Ks.
17:55 We're currently sitting on 11.3.
17:58 So I think Ford's numbers are very, very optimistic
18:02 because even if I drop down to the earlier cycle here, 10.9,
18:06 still much higher than eight and a half.
18:08 And I think that if you are using this realistically
18:10 day-to-day in and around the city,
18:11 perhaps towing with it,
18:12 it is probably gonna chew through a little bit of fuel.
18:14 So keep that in mind
18:15 if you're getting the V6 over the four-cylinder.
18:18 Now there is no sport mode here,
18:20 but I'm gonna pop this into four auto.
18:21 We'll go for a little stab around our track here.
18:24 See what this feels like.
18:26 So a little bit of body roll there.
18:29 It's actually not too bad.
18:32 It's very predictable.
18:33 Like when you tip it in, it does have that body roll,
18:36 but I can just lean on the throttle.
18:38 And then in four auto,
18:39 it's just feeding torque through all four wheels.
18:42 It's just doing a commendable job
18:44 of keeping everything nice and composed.
18:46 And look, this isn't a sports car.
18:48 They do a sport model.
18:49 So I'll be keen to see if that's any better,
18:51 but keeping in mind
18:52 that this is running on the highway terrain.
18:54 So they give this just that little bit of added traction.
18:57 If you go for the all-terrain,
18:58 you'll probably run out of traction a little earlier.
19:01 It will be better for off-road driving,
19:02 but if you are planning on predominantly sticking on road,
19:05 I'd stay with the highway terrains.
19:07 See what it's like on our back straight here.
19:09 Just curious to see what Everest is like
19:12 when it comes to the higher speed stuff, like overtaking.
19:17 Rolling onto the back straight here.
19:18 I'll just stay on that throttle.
19:20 It's actually really composed at high speed.
19:22 I wouldn't dare do anything like this at a Prado.
19:25 This actually feels really good.
19:26 Actually nudging 160 there.
19:31 That's not too bad.
19:32 Yeah, pretty impressed with that.
19:33 So look, it is big.
19:35 It does feel big, but it's very predictable.
19:38 Every input is just,
19:40 it has a response that you are expecting it to have.
19:42 So yeah, pretty impressed
19:43 with how this feels behind the wheel.
19:45 Okay, so there is no sport mode,
19:47 but I thought we'd try our luck at zero to 100 here
19:50 with the V-Box.
19:51 I'm gonna do this twice,
19:52 once in two-wheel drive high range,
19:54 and then once in four-wheel drive auto.
19:56 And I'll go up to 120 as well,
19:57 so we can see what our overtaking range aided at 120 is like.
20:00 So here we go, load up a few revs.
20:03 Just stand on it.
20:03 It feels slightly leisurely compared to range,
20:08 but that's all right.
20:09 100.
20:14 (engine revving)
20:16 And 120, dive on the brakes there.
20:19 Okie dokie.
20:20 So zero to 100, 9.4 seconds.
20:24 And I did a 120 number, 6.7 seconds.
20:28 So it is surprising.
20:29 I would have thought this would be a little snappier there,
20:32 especially with V6 diesel.
20:33 I'll be keen for us to try out the four-cylinder
20:36 to see how much slower that is in comparison,
20:38 but let's give that another try
20:39 this time around in four-wheel drive auto.
20:41 Okay, let's give that one more shot.
20:43 I'm in 4A at the moment,
20:45 so we'll just go straight up to 120 again
20:48 and see what happens.
20:51 Here we go.
20:52 (engine revving)
20:56 All right, there is 120.
21:09 Okay, that was better.
21:11 So nine seconds, zero to 100,
21:13 and 6.7 seconds, 80 to 120.
21:17 So it does look like it makes a little bit of a difference
21:19 there by selecting four auto and nine seconds, zero to 100.
21:24 It's fine.
21:25 I'm not sort of too blown away with it.
21:27 I thought it could be maybe a little bit quicker
21:29 with a big, punchy V6 diesel.
21:31 Okay, time for our all-important reverse speed test.
21:35 Here we go.
21:36 Slide that into reverse.
21:38 Mash the throttle.
21:40 Little bit of torque there.
21:42 38 k's an hour is our limit in reverse.
21:46 Let's talk about the ride.
21:48 So the ride is actually remarkably good
21:50 despite the fact we're on 21-inch alloy wheels.
21:52 In and around town, it's nice and smooth.
21:54 It doesn't feel ute-like at all.
21:56 And that is, you know, there's a quantum difference
21:58 between the Ranger and the Everest,
22:00 which I really love.
22:01 It means you're not just buying a ute with seven seats.
22:03 This feels like its own standalone vehicle,
22:06 and that's really gonna come in handy
22:08 when you are driving through the country,
22:09 and it does show you how much effort they put
22:11 into tuning this for Aussie conditions.
22:13 So what's it like over our sine waves?
22:15 Let's dial up 130 k's an hour.
22:18 So keeping in mind that this is coil sprung,
22:20 it uses a watts linkage at the rear,
22:22 whereas the Ranger outside of Raptor is leaf sprung.
22:26 I would expect this to be a little more settled
22:28 over this stuff, so there's 130.
22:31 It's okay.
22:35 It's not amazing.
22:36 It doesn't really have a great deal of body control
22:37 at the top end there.
22:38 It sort of floats a little bit.
22:40 It does have that sort of added weight that keeps it down,
22:42 so tips of the scales are just under 2,500 kilos,
22:45 so that helps keep it down.
22:46 But once you do get a little bit of that oscillation,
22:48 which is what you'll typically find on a country road,
22:50 and you will encounter that when you're overtaking
22:53 as well at those speeds,
22:54 it is just something to keep tabs on.
22:56 Now what's visibility like?
22:57 This is obviously a big bus.
22:58 I can see clearly down the front there,
23:00 the bonnet is sort of well within visibility, no dramas.
23:04 Big, big wing mirrors with the blind spot monitors
23:06 built into those.
23:07 Visibility out the back is excellent as well,
23:09 so really impressed with that.
23:10 You've got a stack of cameras too,
23:12 so it means that if you are trying to park this
23:13 in and around the city,
23:14 it is going to be pretty easy to park.
23:16 Turning circle of 11.8 meters as well.
23:19 Now what's road noise like?
23:20 It's actually quite quiet and subdued.
23:23 Given they are highway terrain tyres,
23:24 you don't get a huge amount of noise coming in
23:26 through the cabin.
23:27 Obviously, yeah, course-trip roads,
23:29 you get a little bit more,
23:29 but pretty impressed with how quiet it is inside here.
23:33 Now it's time to test our lane support system,
23:35 so we're on our bowl.
23:36 The way that it works is I'll dial up 70 k's an hour
23:39 and we'll test each of the three outer lanes
23:41 to see how well the lane centering system works.
23:43 The Ranger passed in all three lanes,
23:45 so I'm expecting this to do the exact same.
23:47 So let's see how it goes.
23:49 I've got cruise control set to 70 there.
23:52 I'll switch on the lane centering system.
23:55 Let go of the wheel.
23:56 I will support it a little bit,
23:57 'cause technically you're not meant to let go of the wheel.
24:00 That is doing a perfectly good job there in the first lane.
24:04 Jump over to lane two.
24:07 Okay, wait for that to go active.
24:13 Okay, that's found everything.
24:14 Let go of the wheel.
24:15 That is doing a good job there in lane two.
24:20 We're not sort of getting too close to that line.
24:22 Some of those systems,
24:23 I hate it when they wedge you up on the line,
24:25 and if there's a B-double or something there,
24:27 it's the most intimidating place to be seated.
24:30 So I'll wait for this to get its bearings.
24:35 There it is there, okay.
24:36 Let go of the wheel.
24:37 Look at that, that is doing a remarkable job.
24:40 We are close to the line.
24:42 There we go, that's fixed itself up.
24:44 That is awesome.
24:45 So, so far we've only had a couple of cars
24:47 actually be able to achieve this type of thing,
24:49 so really impressed here with the Everest
24:51 being able to do that.
24:52 So, yeah, big tick for all three lanes for Everest.
24:56 Okay, time to do some light off-roading.
24:59 We'll see how the Everest goes.
25:01 I want you through the specs first.
25:02 So I mentioned earlier
25:03 in terms of the mechanical drive modes,
25:05 you have two-wheel drive high range,
25:06 four-wheel drive automatic,
25:07 four-wheel drive high range,
25:08 and four-wheel drive low range.
25:09 You also have a mechanical rear diff lock as well
25:12 that you engage here on the central display,
25:15 and you also have hill descent control too.
25:17 In terms of our actual numbers,
25:19 226 millimeters of ground clearance.
25:21 We have an approach angle of 30.2 degrees.
25:24 So that's the angle of the face you can approach
25:26 before you hit anything at the front of the car,
25:28 and a departure angle of 25 degrees, which is the same,
25:31 but in reverse, you have a waiting depth
25:33 of 800 millimeters as well.
25:35 Now, if any of that doesn't make sense to you,
25:37 or you don't know how to use this stuff down here,
25:39 have a look at this video that we shot a little while back
25:41 where I explained four-wheel drive controls
25:43 and run you through all of it.
25:44 So first up, what we're gonna do is change our drive mode.
25:47 So here ahead of the driver,
25:49 you can flick between normal, eco,
25:51 towing, slippery, mud, ruts, sand.
25:56 So I think we'll go to mud ruts.
25:59 It isn't muddy today.
26:00 It has dried up a little bit beneath the surface it is,
26:02 but I thought that'd be the best bit
26:04 to have a look at how that goes.
26:05 I'm also gonna leave this in two-wheel drive high range.
26:09 In fact, it's not gonna let us do that.
26:10 So I'm just gonna go back to normal
26:11 because the first thing I wanna do here
26:13 is test two-wheel drive high range
26:15 to see how that actually performs
26:17 in terms of traction control on our course.
26:20 So we're in two-wheel drive high range.
26:22 Traction control is on,
26:24 and we will see how it goes here
26:26 when we get a wheel off the ground.
26:28 So the first one's gonna be the driver's side rear
26:30 that lifts off the ground.
26:32 And we'll see how it copes with that.
26:34 There it is there.
26:35 So it's just off the edge of the road.
26:37 I'll just lean into the throttle a little bit.
26:39 See how it does when I feel that lifting.
26:43 Unless it's actually rocking us back and forward a little,
26:48 but a little bit more throttle
26:50 and it gets us off the ground there
26:51 without any problems at all.
26:53 And then I'll ease us off the edge here.
26:54 The guys at the proving ground
26:56 have fixed the mess I made out here with the Raptor
27:00 when I decided to leave it in two-wheel drive.
27:01 High range and just floor it
27:04 with the stability control switch off.
27:06 There we go.
27:07 So no drivers there.
27:07 What we'll do now, we'll double back there.
27:09 I'll flick it into the mud ruts mode
27:12 and we'll put it in four-wheel drive high range
27:13 to see how traction control copes
27:16 when we have a couple of wheels off the ground.
27:18 Okay, so we'll flick through these drive modes to mud ruts.
27:23 It switches us into four-wheel drive high range on its own.
27:26 It locks the rear diff as well.
27:28 I'll just see how we go without the rear diff locked.
27:30 So I'll disable it by pushing that.
27:32 See how it copes with that terrain.
27:37 It's knocking about a bit.
27:40 Okay, here we go.
27:41 So it's in this spot just here
27:43 we get four wheels off the ground.
27:46 See how it likes that.
27:48 I guess I can see that wheel spinning
27:49 in the background there.
27:51 I'll just lean onto the throttle.
27:52 You can hear the traction control working.
27:55 Jeez, it is doing such a good job.
27:57 That is awesome.
27:58 So all I've done is just leaned onto the throttle
28:01 and the traction control is sorting everything out.
28:03 I haven't had to lock the rear diff there
28:04 to get it over this.
28:05 So that is really damn impressive.
28:09 So yeah, good job there by the Everest.
28:13 Okay, next up, we've got our hills.
28:14 So what I'm gonna do here is keep it in mud ruts
28:19 except I'll go to low range.
28:20 So to get to low range, you hit 4L once.
28:24 It wants us to put that into neutral.
28:26 So it tells us there on the screen ahead of us.
28:29 It does that shift.
28:30 I'll lock the rear diff as well.
28:31 It switches stability control off when it does that.
28:34 So I'm gonna push this button as well.
28:35 So this brings up our terrain view.
28:38 So we get our vision out the front there.
28:40 We've also got the rear diff locked.
28:41 I'm gonna turn the parking sensors off
28:43 'cause they can get annoying.
28:45 I'll just roll up to the hill here.
28:47 And ahead of us as well, you can see all of our angles.
28:50 So pitch and roll,
28:51 and then exactly what the four wheel drive system's doing.
28:53 So I'm gonna go up this twice.
28:54 Once is just a slow climb.
28:56 And then next time around, I'll go up halfway
28:58 and see how well this copes with starting.
29:02 I could feel it slipping there a little bit already.
29:05 Starting from stationary.
29:08 Okay, so we're on highway terrains here
29:09 and it's not loving this.
29:10 So I'll just give this a little more of a nudge.
29:13 There we go, we're getting there.
29:15 All right, just needs a little bit more love.
29:17 There we go, okay.
29:19 We got there in the end.
29:20 All right, we've got our mud bog.
29:21 We'll plow through this.
29:22 All right, there it is.
29:25 And then we've got our descent.
29:26 Now on the descent,
29:27 I'm gonna use the hill descent control
29:29 just to test that out.
29:30 So you engage that just by pushing that button just there.
29:34 Tells us hill descent control is ready.
29:36 And we'll see how it goes on our descent here.
29:40 Coming over this hill.
29:44 My camera comes in very handy here.
29:47 So I'll just let go of the brake.
29:49 And there it is there.
29:50 It is going down nice and gently all on its own.
29:53 No problems there at all.
29:55 So yeah, it's impressive.
29:57 I have said this before in other videos
29:59 that I do prefer just to use my own descent
30:02 instead of hill descent control,
30:03 but it's good to know that it's there anyway.
30:06 Okay, so it is time for round two on our hill.
30:10 Yes, this time I'm gonna go up
30:11 and basically just come to a stop
30:13 and then just lean into the throttle
30:14 and we'll see how we go getting up there.
30:16 It sort of didn't love going up this the first time around
30:20 and I kind of had to stop anyway.
30:22 So here we are, I'll stop here
30:24 and we'll just lean onto the throttle and see how it goes.
30:27 We're already slipping a little bit.
30:29 I can see the rear wheels spinning.
30:31 It's gonna stay in the throttle though.
30:33 All right, we're getting up there.
30:34 Getting up there.
30:35 There you go, that did well.
30:36 So look, we had to go low range,
30:38 rear diff locked for that to work.
30:40 But ultimately I think it is the highway terrain tires
30:42 that lets this package down.
30:44 If you are gonna be doing any off-road driving,
30:46 I would be going straight for the all terrains
30:49 because they're gonna make a huge amount of difference
30:52 when you have limited traction.
30:53 Okay, time for our rocks.
30:55 Obviously, yeah, I wouldn't recommend doing this
30:58 with highway terrain tires.
31:00 I would be only doing this with all terrains,
31:03 but I just wanna see what it feels like
31:04 just in terms of behind the wheel here.
31:07 So I've just left it in low range.
31:08 I'm just riding the brake with the throttle.
31:11 It's actually really nice and comfy.
31:12 I found with the Ranger
31:13 that it was actually pretty comfy as well.
31:15 Whereas this, this just feels right at home.
31:18 You can kind of imagine having the whole family in here
31:20 and going off and getting stuck somewhere
31:23 and then getting in trouble from your wife.
31:25 Yeah, it actually feels pretty good.
31:27 Finally, our water crossing.
31:29 So 800 mil wading depth.
31:31 Let me get through our little bog over here to get us there.
31:35 I've left it in low range just in case.
31:40 It's not overly deep at the moment,
31:42 but better to be safe than sorry, I reckon.
31:44 Especially when it is someone else's car.
31:46 So crawl around here.
31:49 Okay, here we go.
31:51 That's actually not too bad.
31:53 It's just around 650 mil.
31:55 Drop her in.
31:57 Let's see how it goes.
31:58 Feels good.
32:02 I just love how you can hear it lapping around the doors.
32:05 It's always slightly concerning.
32:07 All right, let's see what it's like
32:08 with our climb out of here on these highway terrains.
32:11 Ah, it's fine.
32:13 Tiny bit of slip there, but it's all good.
32:15 There you go.
32:16 Okay, so look, pretty impressed with Everest Off-Road.
32:19 Same as Ranger.
32:20 I mean, it just does the job really well.
32:22 The only thing I would change is just
32:23 if you are gonna be doing any off-roading,
32:25 even if it is sort of light-ish stuff,
32:26 just get your All-Terrains.
32:27 It really will make a world of difference
32:29 and it means you won't be scrabbling for grip all the time.
32:31 But outside of that, really impressed
32:33 with all these four-wheel drive controls
32:34 and how well the traction control system works.
32:37 So the Ford Everest, look,
32:41 I'm probably not surprising any of you
32:43 by telling you that this thing is pretty awesome.
32:45 I really enjoy the Ranger.
32:46 I think they've done an excellent job with that.
32:48 Not so much at the lower end, I think it's a bit expensive,
32:50 but at the top end,
32:51 if you are prepared to pay that little bit extra,
32:52 you are getting a quality product.
32:54 This right here creates a reason to not bother
32:56 with anything else in this segment,
32:58 including the Toyota Prado.
32:59 The Prado just feels so old now
33:02 and it is more expensive than that
33:03 with a smaller engine, less features.
33:06 I mean, it just makes no sense why anyone would buy it.
33:07 So I think this really is right up there.
33:09 The V6 is great.
33:10 And here in the platinum trim,
33:11 you're getting all of the bells and whistles.
33:13 I'm looking forward to driving some of the cheaper ones.
33:15 I wanna see what the Sport's like,
33:16 especially with the V6.
33:17 And I also wanna see what the four-cylinder's like
33:19 because this probably wasn't as snappy
33:21 as I thought it would be with the V6.
33:23 So I'm thinking the four-cylinder
33:24 is probably going to feel a little bit slow,
33:26 but we'll wait and see until I get a chance
33:28 to finally drive that.
33:29 And it's probably a little more dynamic
33:30 than I thought it was gonna be as well.
33:31 So let me know what you reckon in the comments section below.
33:34 Did you buy a Ford Everest?
33:35 How's it going?
33:37 Have you tested one of these?
33:38 Have you bought something else?
