Transcript
00:00 The DOST report that one in seven Filipino children is obese or overweight.
00:05 Because of this, the DEPEDD plans to limit the unhealthy food advertisement that children see.
00:12 Noel Talacay has a report, exclusive.
00:15 The cases of obesity and non-communicable diseases are increasing among the youth of the country,
00:25 according to a nutritionist.
00:27 This is because of the high availability of unhealthy foods in the community, even in social media.
00:35 We can see the trend that the rate and incidence of obesity in children is increasing.
00:46 Our cases are also increasing for other non-communicable diseases like your kidney problems, diabetes, etc.
00:56 We can see that our cases of heart attack, diabetes are increasing.
01:03 According to the study of DOST-FNRI,
01:07 one in seven Filipino children is overweight or obese.
01:14 UNICEF says that if this is not implemented,
01:18 30% of Filipino children will be obese or overweight by 2030.
01:27 According to a nutritionist,
01:30 this is the time to take care of the health of Filipino children.
01:36 We really need to address this issue,
01:39 and limit the exposure of our children to the advertisements that encourage them to eat unhealthy foods.
01:50 That is why this Children's Month celebration,
01:53 some of the country's leaders are gathering together,
01:57 including your services for PTV,
02:00 to have a heated discussion against unhealthy food ads.
02:07 This was led by Imagine Law,
02:10 an advocate group where 13 journalists from TV, print, and online,
02:17 only seven were chosen.
02:20 We selected those who demonstrated their capacity and ability to pursue a story relentlessly.
02:28 That's what we need, especially in an issue like the impact of unhealthy food and beverage marketing
02:35 that can really bring down the social issues.
02:40 The advocates are also here for the rights of youth and some LGUs,
02:47 some government agencies,
02:49 such as the Department of Health and Department of Education or DepEd.
02:54 DepEd is here to learn that there are programs and policies developed
02:59 to provide good nutrition to children studying abroad.
03:04 The Department of Education has also made a move
03:08 to fight unhealthy food ads that can be seen inside and outside schools.
03:14 We are pushing for the expansion of the school-based feeding program
03:18 so that we start feeding our kids not just for 120 days but for the entire school year.
03:24 And also we hope to limit the presence of unhealthy food advertising.
03:29 We are pushing to increase it so that we can actually provide our kids with better hot meals,
03:35 not just nutribuns but hot meals,
03:37 and in collaboration with LGUs, develop more central kitchens
03:41 and ensure that all Filipino youth are healthier and stronger.
03:45 Their call now is for a law to regulate unhealthy food ads
03:53 that are being shown on various platforms.
03:56 Noel Talacay for the Morning Show ng Bayan, Rise and Shine, Philippines.
