00:00 Meet the future star of Malaysian equestrian sports, Arisha Hayakanda.
00:21 At only 16 years old, Arisha has made history on the international stage as a showjumping
00:26 and dressage athlete.
00:30 This year she became Malaysia's first individual medalist in the Asian Junior Championships
00:35 held in Seoul in South Korea.
00:38 She also played a pivotal role in the Princess' Cup Thailand 2022 as a member of the first
00:44 junior national team to medal in an international event.
00:49 Don't let her small stature fool you.
00:51 Arisha stands as the sole athlete among the few youth riders in Malaysia to consistently
00:56 achieve the 130cm level in showjumping, the highest class in the country.
01:03 Despite her successes, Arisha has a very simple reason for loving the sport.
01:08 What I love most about the sport is that I just get to spend time with my best friends
01:15 every day.
01:16 I 100% consider the horses my best friends.
01:20 They know more about me than anyone, any human does.
01:25 This bond, she says, is what makes the sport unique.
01:29 So horses have a huge emotional capacity and what makes that so special is also their sensitivity
01:37 to humans' emotions.
01:39 So actually, fun fact is that a horse can detect a human's heartbeat from up to four
01:44 feet away.
01:46 So when they're human, when their rider is feeling nervous or stressed and their heart
01:51 rate increases, the horse can feel that.
01:54 And that will actually affect the horse's mood and performance.
01:57 Acknowledging that a high level of discipline is required for any sport, Arisha says being
02:03 an equestrian athlete requires even more.
02:07 This is a sport that isn't just a sport.
02:11 It's an entire lifestyle.
02:13 Horses are high maintenance.
02:15 You have to spend hours and hours a day that you're not riding them, taking care of them
02:19 on the ground.
02:20 You have to brush them, you have to groom them, you have to feed them, and you have
02:23 to interact with them.
02:24 So it is not just about the training and the technical skills of the sport.
02:30 After a day of rigorous training at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort in Kuala
02:34 Lumpur, you'll often find Arisha at the stables showering affection on her horses like Metzi
02:41 here.
02:42 And while celebrating her victories, this young athlete admits that gaining local recognition
02:48 in this niche sport has been challenging.
02:51 Hoping to change that, Arisha is gearing up to relocate to Holland next year for advanced
02:56 training with her sights set on the 2027 SEA Games, the Asian Games, and ultimately the
03:02 Olympics.
