00:03 Here are five things we love and five things we hate
00:05 about the 2024 Polaris RZR Turbo R4 Ultimate.
00:09 The Pro R may have grabbed all the headlines
00:11 a couple of years back,
00:12 but the Turbo R still holds a special place in our hearts.
00:15 With 181 horsepower from a one liter turbocharged twin,
00:19 this thing is a riot.
00:20 In an ultimate trim,
00:21 it comes with everything you could ask for.
00:23 Let's get started with the first thing we love,
00:26 this suspension.
00:27 It's the Fox 3.0 Live Valve internal bypass shocks
00:31 married to Polaris's excellent
00:33 Dynamix DV selectable drive modes.
00:35 If you think active suspension is a gimmick,
00:37 spend five seconds behind the wheel of this thing.
00:39 This kit is a wild.
00:40 It samples the terrain a billion times a second
00:43 to make sure all four wheels are planted at all times.
00:46 From a dig, you can feel the suspension working
00:48 to keep all the power down.
00:50 Once you're up to speed, everything levels out.
00:52 It feels like a speed boat coming up on plane.
00:55 It's wild.
00:55 Jokes aside, the Turbo R is wildly capable.
00:58 Polaris says it has an amazing 27 inches
01:01 of usable wheel travel,
01:02 which is great out here in super technical terrain.
01:05 The second thing we love about the 2024 Polaris Razor
01:09 Turbo R4 Ultimate is, and you've heard it before,
01:12 ride command.
01:13 There isn't a better navigation and infotainment system
01:15 on the market, full stop.
01:16 Planning routes, tracking your buddies,
01:18 communicating with other riders, it's all crazy easy.
01:20 The menus are well thought out, super easy to use,
01:23 and pairing your phone takes seconds.
01:25 It's great, and we wish every other manufacturer
01:27 had a system this nice.
01:28 The third thing we love about this machine
01:30 is of course the engine.
01:32 Like we said earlier, the Pro R gets all the attention,
01:34 but this Turbo Twin is a star.
01:36 And weirdly, it feels rowdier than the Pro R.
01:39 Part of that is how the turbo comes on.
01:40 You get this big swell of power.
01:42 You can hear the wastegate go off.
01:44 There is no mistaking that this is a turbo.
01:46 (engine revving)
01:49 Do we miss the extra power from the Pro R?
01:51 Not around here.
01:52 There really aren't too many places to stretch the legs
01:55 of a machine like this.
01:56 You know, 181 horsepower, 225 horsepower,
01:58 it doesn't really matter.
01:59 Out here, it is more than enough.
02:01 We can see needing the extra grunt from the Pro R
02:03 maybe out west if you're ripping around the dunes.
02:05 Out there, you gotta go full gout for hours on end,
02:08 but out here, Turbo R is more than enough.
02:10 The fourth thing we love about the Turbo R Ultimate
02:13 is the back seats.
02:14 Look, we're all drivers here,
02:16 but if you're buying a four-door,
02:17 you want enough space for all of your buddies,
02:19 not just a bunch of kids.
02:20 Nobody wants to spend a ride with your knees
02:22 crammed into the front seats.
02:23 Fortunately, the Turbo R has plenty of room.
02:26 I'm about 5'11" and I can sit back there all day long.
02:29 There is that much room.
02:30 And it's not just how much leg room there is.
02:32 There's stadium seating,
02:33 which means the people in the back seat
02:34 can see over the heads of the people in the front seat,
02:37 which is huge.
02:37 That keeps car sickness at bay,
02:39 and it makes for a way more entertaining ride
02:41 than if you're sitting down way low.
02:42 And the big grab bar means I can stay planted.
02:45 I can use my arms to hold myself in place,
02:47 even if the machine's going all over the place.
02:49 That really reduces fatigue.
02:50 It means I'm not relying on my core to stay in place.
02:53 That's huge.
02:54 The fifth thing we love about the Turbo R Ultimate,
02:56 these tires.
02:57 Polaris ships this rig with 32-inch Maxxis Rampage tires.
03:01 They're excellent.
03:02 They're wrapped around 15-inch aluminum wheels.
03:04 That is a great combination for a sport rig.
03:06 It offers a good balance of speed for wide open running,
03:10 and also plenty of sidewall for technical riding.
03:12 All that sidewall, it's great for ride comfort,
03:15 but it also means that you can air down
03:16 if you're out in the sand.
03:17 And of course, the 32-inch diameter
03:19 means you've got plenty of rolling diameter
03:21 to overcome big steps, big rocks with no problem.
03:24 We know plenty of guys who like a bigger wheel though,
03:26 just for the style of the thing.
03:27 What do you guys think?
03:28 Do you think Polaris should ship this thing
03:29 with a 16 or even a 17?
03:30 Let us know down in the comments.
03:32 Look, there are plenty more things
03:33 that we love about the Turbo R, but we gotta get moving.
03:35 Let's talk about the five things we hate about this rig.
03:37 Starting with, you guessed it, the transmission,
03:40 or more specifically, the shift lever.
03:42 Look, we have no problem with a good CVT.
03:44 Unfortunately, the Turbo R is stuck
03:46 with the old Polaris hardware.
03:48 And that means this shift lever feels like a broomstick
03:50 stuck in a bucket of mud.
03:52 That's not okay for a $40,000 rig.
03:54 It's vague, it can be hard to shift.
03:57 And that really sticks out
03:58 when the rest of the rig is this good.
04:00 All of that is frustrating
04:01 because we've seen what Polaris is capable of.
04:04 The Ranger XD 1500 has an amazing transmission.
04:07 Seriously, you can shift it with two fingers.
04:09 You're not doing that with this rig.
04:11 And if you can do it on a work rig, Polaris,
04:13 you can do it on this Turbo R.
04:14 The second thing I hate about the Turbo R Ultimate,
04:17 and I'm gonna get nitpicky here,
04:18 no bead locks on this rig.
04:21 This rig will cost you every bit of $40,000
04:24 by the time you get it home.
04:25 And if Kawasaki can put bead locks on the KRX,
04:27 Polaris can put it on this rig.
04:29 Look, they're big and they're heavy and they're expensive,
04:31 but they open up a lot of capability.
04:32 You can run way lower air pressures,
04:34 which is huge in the sand.
04:35 The third thing we hate, we're gonna stay nitpicky here.
04:38 We love Ride Command.
04:40 The screen is starting to show its age.
04:42 Compare this little guy to the huge 10-inch screen
04:45 on the Can-Am Maverick R,
04:46 or the sneak photos that we've seen
04:48 of the new Kawasaki Ridge,
04:50 and you realize this is pretty small.
04:52 The graphics are okay,
04:53 the rear backup camera fidelity, not so great.
04:57 And that's tough when the software is this good.
04:59 The fourth thing we hate about the Turbo R4 Ultimate
05:03 is the lack of obvious tie-downs.
05:05 Yeah, that's a minor thing,
05:06 but we got really spoiled by the Razor XP1000
05:09 with its integrated tow loops.
05:10 Makes it really obvious where to tie this thing down,
05:13 makes it super secure on a trailer.
05:14 And a lot like the shifter,
05:15 since we know Polaris can do better,
05:17 we want it on this rig.
05:18 The fifth thing that we hate about this machine,
05:20 and it's not specific to the Turbo R4 Ultimate,
05:24 the door handles.
05:25 I know Polaris has been using the same interior release
05:28 since the dawn of time,
05:29 and that's fine on a two-seat rig where it's just you,
05:32 or it's just your spouse,
05:33 or it's just you and a buddy who's in the rig all the time.
05:35 But a four-seater means you're gonna be taking around
05:37 a bunch of people who aren't necessarily familiar
05:39 with your rig.
05:40 I don't know how many times I've had to explain
05:42 how to open the rear door to a passenger.
05:44 And look, that just shouldn't be a thing.
05:46 I shouldn't have to explain to people
05:47 how to open the door to a rig.
05:49 So like on all Razors, you get suicide doors.
05:51 That's different to begin with.
05:52 It's different from a car, a Jeep, or anything else.
05:54 Then you've got to feel around for where the door latch is.
05:58 It's this handy thing.
05:59 That's not super obvious either.
06:00 Again, not a big deal if you've done it a billion times,
06:03 but if you're new to riding,
06:04 and hey, a lot of people who are riding in the back are,
06:07 it's gonna be a pain.
06:08 Yeah, obviously those are some very small things
06:10 to whine about, and they're small because,
06:11 hey, we love this machine.
06:13 It's excellent, but the misses really stand out.
06:16 So all that said, who is this rig for?
06:18 This machine's for somebody who isn't big on compromises.
06:20 You want to be able to go flat out anywhere.
06:22 You want to be able to hit any trail you can,
06:24 and you want to be able to take
06:25 a bunch of passengers with you.
06:26 It's also for the experienced driver,
06:29 and that's partly because the Turbo R4 Ultimate
06:31 doesn't feel as neutral as the Pro R.
06:34 It's a saucier rig.
06:35 It wants to slide.
06:36 It wants to pivot.
06:37 It feels like it has a much more rearward weight bias.
06:39 And look, that's a ton of fun for people like us
06:42 who have spent a lot of time behind the wheel.
06:43 But if you're new to side-by-sides
06:45 and you're new to sport side-by-sides in particular,
06:46 it's gonna be a handful.
06:47 Finally, this machine is definitely for people
06:49 who may need to adhere to local laws
06:51 that restrict side-by-sides to under a liter.
06:54 This rig's 925cc mil easily flies under that benchmark,
06:57 whereas the Pro R's big two liter definitely won't.
06:59 That's been five things we love and five things we hate
07:02 about the 2024 RZR Pro R4 Ultimate.
