00:00 The unlimited class side-by-side arms race
00:02 has officially begun, Zach.
00:04 Two years ago, Polaris released the Razor Pro-R,
00:06 the biggest, the baddest side-by-side
00:08 you could buy at the time.
00:09 And Can-Am didn't fire back immediately,
00:11 and we all kinda thought, what's happening here?
00:13 Yesterday, they fired back.
00:15 Zach, what did they do?
00:16 They fired back in a big way.
00:17 We're talking more power.
00:19 We're talking a trick transmission.
00:21 We're talking more wheel travel, more ground clearance,
00:24 a better interior.
00:25 We are talking an all-new Maverick from the ground up
00:28 that only shares one thing with the old guy,
00:31 that's the seats.
00:32 I'm Aaron, that's Zach,
00:33 and this is everything you need to know
00:35 about the 2024 Can-Am Maverick R.
00:38 (upbeat music)
00:41 So to get to know the Maverick R,
00:43 we need to know the basics of what it is.
00:45 Zach.
00:46 - Yeah.
00:47 - What is it?
00:47 - Like I said, it's an all-new machine,
00:49 and that starts with the engine.
00:50 Can-Am says it's a 999cc Rotax turbocharged triple.
00:55 That sounds pretty familiar
00:57 because it's the exact same layout
00:59 as in our own Can-Am Maverick X3 XRS Turbo RR.
01:03 - Did they just moon boost it?
01:04 - They did not.
01:05 You know, that would have been the easy thing to do, right?
01:07 We sort of expected Can-Am to just take that Rotax,
01:10 shove a load of boost at it, and let it eat.
01:13 You know, we threw a Dynojet at our rig.
01:15 It was turning over 200 horsepower.
01:17 We thought, man, the reach to 221,
01:20 just to poke Polaris in the eye, was not that far.
01:22 - Nope.
01:23 - But Can-Am did not do that.
01:25 This new engine is all new from Rotax.
01:27 They say this rig has been in development
01:30 for a total of eight years.
01:32 - Eight years?
01:33 - That's what they said.
01:34 - Tell me a little bit about this all-new engine.
01:35 What changed?
01:36 All sorts of things, right?
01:37 - You've got plasma-lined cylinders.
01:38 You've got tension rods to hold the thing together.
01:40 We're used to, like, head bolts.
01:41 This thing uses external rods,
01:44 threaded at both ends to sandwich everything together
01:47 so it doesn't blow apart when you are skeeting along.
01:51 - Now, it's important to note
01:52 that they haven't told us bore and stroke,
01:54 torque figures, or how much boost it makes,
01:56 but if you're going to the trouble of bolting it together
01:58 after you already bolted it together,
02:00 you can imagine it's gonna be a ton.
02:02 - It's gonna be a ton.
02:02 240 horsepower.
02:04 That's 15 more than the Pro are.
02:06 It's a dry-sump motor.
02:07 Can-Am says they have tested that rig
02:09 up to 45 degrees on an incline.
02:11 Engine oil is just fine.
02:12 It has piston squirters.
02:14 It has all sorts of trick stuff to keep the thing cool,
02:17 including an external oil cooler with two fans.
02:20 - All right, but how are they getting the power
02:21 to the ground?
02:22 Is it a traditional CVT like everything else?
02:23 - No, man.
02:24 - Ah.
02:25 - Yeah, so we saw the patent drawings
02:27 a little bit before this thing got unveiled.
02:29 It's a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
02:32 It is the only seven-speed dual-clutch currently for sale
02:35 and is side-by-side anywhere.
02:37 If you're familiar with a Honda Talon,
02:38 you know what a dual-clutch transmission is, right?
02:40 Two shafts, gears on each side.
02:43 One loads up the next gear, bang.
02:44 You've got power just as fast as you can click through it.
02:47 - How fast does it shift?
02:49 - They wouldn't tell us.
02:49 Very fast is what they said.
02:51 - Okay, so more or less instantaneous torque.
02:53 - More or less instantaneous torque.
02:54 You do have high and low for all seven of those gears.
02:58 It's not a 14 speed technically,
03:01 but you can go from first low to seventh low,
03:04 then jump up to first high and go all the way up
03:07 to seven high.
03:08 - As if that wasn't enough,
03:09 they also did something radical with the suspension.
03:12 If you look at it, it looks kind of a little snaky,
03:14 a little maybe lobstery with the claws that hang over.
03:16 They're calling that the tall knuckle suspension.
03:18 Now, what does tall knuckle mean and what does it do?
03:21 - The tall knuckle suspension makes sure
03:23 that you can have as much travel as possible
03:24 while maintaining the lowest center of gravity.
03:27 It also makes sure that all of the forces,
03:30 the load forces, lateral, up, down, forward, back,
03:33 all of those forces get transferred directly to the frame,
03:37 not twisting around the suspension.
03:39 I mean, if you look at that knuckle,
03:41 it is a giant hunk of aluminum.
03:44 Super strong, made to take an absolute beating,
03:47 which is good because this thing leaves the factory
03:50 with 32 inch tires wrapped around 16 inch beadlocks.
03:54 That is a heavy, heavy combination.
03:56 - Yup, and it means that you can put 35 inch tires on it.
03:59 Also, it means the thing is 77 inches wide.
04:01 She a big girl.
04:02 - She a big girl.
04:03 And they made it 77 inches wide
04:05 because at full compression,
04:07 the suspension will actually widen up to three inches.
04:10 There are a lot of race bodies
04:11 that regulate the total width of a machine
04:13 at full compression.
04:14 That number is typically 80 inches.
04:16 There are some legislative bodies
04:18 that also regulate that too,
04:20 in terms of like OHV places,
04:21 places you can ride, that sort of thing.
04:23 So they kept it at 77 inches.
04:24 You squish it down, it gets wider.
04:26 That sounds super wide,
04:27 especially when you think that our X3 is--
04:30 - 72?
04:31 - But, I mean, compare that to like, what, a Jeep Rubicon?
04:34 - Yup, it's three inches wider than a Jeep Rubicon.
04:37 - Yeah, a stock Rubicon.
04:38 We're not talking wide tires, bumpers, all the rest,
04:41 or sliders, any of the rest of that stuff.
04:42 You know, it's a big girl.
04:44 It's not that big girl.
04:44 That said, K&M has made it hyper clear
04:47 this is not a woods machine.
04:48 - No, this is for desert racing.
04:50 - It is for getting out and going as fast
04:52 as you are comfortable going in the wide open desert.
04:55 - They haven't said how fast.
04:56 - They have not said how fast.
04:57 They did say faster than the old X3.
05:00 - Yes, so those are the high points of the spec sheet,
05:03 but let's drill down a little bit
05:04 and maybe we should compare this thing to the Pro-R.
05:07 What do you think?
05:07 - Yeah, that's what everybody wants to know.
05:08 - All right, so why don't you go through
05:10 the Maverick R spec sheet,
05:11 I'll go through the Polaris RZR Pro-R spec sheet,
05:13 and we'll see how the two stack up.
05:15 - We should start with price.
05:16 The 2024 Maverick R starts at $35,499.
05:21 How does that line up against the Pro-R?
05:23 - Well, it's less.
05:24 The 2023 Polaris RZR Pro-R,
05:26 according to our spec sheet, starts at 37,499.
05:30 - Dude, two grand.
05:31 - Yeah. - That's a lot.
05:32 - And these things have been on the market for a minute,
05:34 and let's just say I challenge you to find one
05:37 that actually trades at 37,499.
05:39 - Yeah, absolutely.
05:40 I can remember when they first dropped,
05:41 dealers were asking over $50,000 for a base Pro-R,
05:44 a base two seat Pro-R.
05:46 - Yeah, yeah.
05:47 - And those numbers have softened up a little bit,
05:49 but not a lot.
05:50 - Yeah, I mean, and it is also fair to say
05:52 when the Maverick R hits dealers,
05:54 you can expect that launch editions
05:56 are gonna be a little bit more expensive,
05:58 markups gonna come into it.
05:59 By the spec sheet, the 2024 Maverick R
06:01 is underneath the 2023 Polaris RZR Pro-R.
06:05 What's next, engines?
06:06 - Yeah, let's talk about engines.
06:07 And this is a crucial thing, right?
06:09 So Polaris went a very different way
06:12 from all other side-by-sides.
06:15 Can-Am stuck with something
06:16 that we're more familiar with, right?
06:18 So a sub one liter, 999 CC turbocharged triple.
06:23 They're gonna run into any of the regulatory problems
06:26 that you would run into with a two liter
06:28 in terms of where you can ride the thing,
06:30 in terms of how you insure it,
06:31 how the EPA treats it, any of that fun stuff.
06:35 It is just a regular side-by-side tried and true.
06:38 - The RZR Pro-R, when you run it in a racing series,
06:40 it has to be in an unlimited class.
06:42 Almost like you need special regulations to run it.
06:44 You're not gonna see a Pro-R run against a Maverick X3,
06:47 and that's based on the engine size.
06:49 The thing about the Maverick R
06:51 is that it now fits in all the turbo classes
06:53 that limit you to one liter.
06:54 So not only does the Can-Am Maverick R
06:57 have more horsepower than the Pro-R
06:59 and can run in the unlimited class with the Pro-R,
07:01 it also can slot in in those lower classes
07:04 where everything tops out at about 180 horsepower.
07:06 The Pro-R runs a 1997 cc or two liter four cylinder
07:11 that comes right out of the slingshot.
07:13 It's a stout motor.
07:14 There's a lot of room to put a turbo on it
07:16 or whatever you wanna do,
07:17 so you can make more horsepower out of a Pro-R.
07:20 But again, you run into where you can drive it.
07:22 You run into how you can insure it.
07:23 Rules are a little bit easier to navigate
07:25 with that 999 cc mark.
07:27 Let's talk transmission.
07:28 My Pro-R has a Polaris's PVT,
07:30 continuously variable automatic.
07:32 That is a traditional rubber belt driven CVT
07:35 like you see in every other side-by-side.
07:37 What's the Maverick R got going on?
07:38 It's got a DCT, seven speed dual clutch transmission
07:41 we talked about a little bit earlier.
07:42 You know, we're used to seeing a dual clutch
07:44 in the Honda Talon.
07:45 It was big news when the Talon came out
07:47 with the dual clutch transmission
07:48 from the Honda Africa Twin motorcycle.
07:50 This promises to be something else entirely,
07:54 specifically because it was designed,
07:56 it was manufactured only for the Maverick R.
07:59 This isn't another gearbox
08:00 that was plucked out of something else
08:01 and dropped into a side-by-side.
08:03 This is its own gearbox.
08:05 Okay, so it's a, is it a Rotax gearbox?
08:08 It is Rotax.
08:08 Rotax says that they designed the thing,
08:10 started from the ground up,
08:12 built it specifically for the Maverick R.
08:13 That engine, that transmission combination,
08:15 on my side, on Maverick R's side,
08:17 we're talking 240 horsepower.
08:19 Yeah, on the Pro-R side, out of the box,
08:21 you've heard this number a million times,
08:23 it is 225 horsepower.
08:24 We should point out, that's plenty.
08:26 We've both driven a Pro-R and they don't hang around.
08:30 No, you know, it's interesting.
08:31 If two years ago, you had come to me and said,
08:34 hey, there's gonna be a 225 horsepower RZR,
08:37 I would have called you absolutely insane.
08:39 Now we have a 225 horsepower RZR
08:41 and a 240 horsepower Maverick.
08:43 Right, and you know, we were asking two years ago,
08:46 when the Pro-R came out,
08:47 where are you gonna use 225 horsepower?
08:50 Anywhere you want, right?
08:51 Yeah, yeah, and 240 is going to be
08:53 just that little bit more insane.
08:55 So, on my side of things,
08:57 the dual-clutch transmission
08:58 gives you a bunch of different advantages.
09:00 It's got three drive modes.
09:01 You've got normal mode, which shifts at like 3,500 RPM.
09:04 You've got sport mode,
09:05 that ratchets that all the way up to 8,500 RPM.
09:08 And then there's sport plus,
09:10 which turns on an anti-lag system.
09:12 They will literally shut down one cylinder,
09:15 and just turn it off.
09:16 So it's just pumping air constantly.
09:18 It's unclear whether they leave the valves open
09:20 to make sure that, you know,
09:22 air's going where it should be down the exhaust.
09:24 That air keeps the turbo spun up.
09:26 They retard the engine timing,
09:28 so that when you pop on the throttle,
09:30 everything jumps back up to normal.
09:32 That third cylinder pops off.
09:34 The turbo's already spooled up.
09:35 You have zero lag, and you are off and ripping.
09:37 That was the next thing I was going to bring up.
09:39 The Pro-R is naturally aspirated,
09:40 so I was going to ask how that's going to work,
09:42 and we got the turbskies, bud.
09:44 Weirdly, can't have much thinking about that.
09:46 It's an all-new turbo.
09:47 It's not anything that we've seen
09:49 on any of the old Mavericks.
09:50 How big is it, 54 millimeter?
09:51 It's 54 millimeter.
09:52 That is huge.
09:54 It's a honker.
09:55 All right, on the suspension side of things,
09:56 again, we covered it a little bit
09:58 in the high points at the beginning of the video.
09:59 On the Pro-R side of things,
10:01 when this thing came out,
10:02 everyone was shocked at how beefy
10:04 the front and rear suspension is.
10:06 And for the first time in a side-by-side,
10:08 the coilover actually goes through the upper A-arm
10:10 and connects to the lower A-arm,
10:12 which shouldn't be revolutionary,
10:13 but it's something that desert racers
10:15 raved about when it came out.
10:16 It's just that much stronger
10:17 than anything that came before it.
10:19 But I think the tall knuckle kicks that up
10:20 just another couple notches.
10:22 - Like previous Mavericks,
10:23 the Maverick-R uses Fox suspension.
10:26 This time, it's live valve suspension.
10:28 It uses Fox Podium 2.5 shocks up front,
10:31 Fox Podium 3.0s in the back.
10:33 The new live valve system samples the terrain
10:36 and can adjust the shocks up to 200 times per second.
10:40 - That is ridiculous.
10:41 - That is ripping along.
10:42 Can-Am also says that these new Podium shocks
10:44 have more compression adjustment
10:46 than any other side-by-side ever made.
10:48 They say six times the previous champ.
10:50 - That is huge.
10:52 Let's talk about travel real quick.
10:54 The 2023 RZR Pro-R has up to 27 inches of travel
10:57 in the front and up to 29 out back.
10:59 How's the Can-Am doing?
11:00 - That eclipses the Can-Am.
11:02 We only have 25 up front and 26 in the rear.
11:04 - Only.
11:05 - Yeah, yeah, yeah, no.
11:06 You're talking two feet of suspension travel.
11:09 That is a lot.
11:10 - Right, and also the design of the new knuckle
11:13 keeps everything sort of moving a little bit more smoothly,
11:15 keeps the center of gravity low where you want it.
11:17 So what you lose on paper, on the spec sheet,
11:20 you don't have bragging rights at the bar,
11:22 but something tells me that the performance
11:24 isn't going to suffer all that much.
11:26 - Yeah, like, you know, what's two inches among friends?
11:28 - Right, ask that question all the time.
11:30 Before we get to the next thing on the spreadsheet, friends,
11:33 remember to like this video, comment on it, and subscribe.
11:36 We have new content every Sunday,
11:38 and if you don't subscribe, you won't get notified.
11:41 So go down there and get subscribed.
11:42 Both of these machines have triple piston calipers up front,
11:46 dual piston calipers in the rear,
11:48 which is a big step up for braking,
11:50 and you're going to need that
11:51 given the speed you're going to be carrying.
11:52 - Right, neither company skimped here.
11:54 - Neither company one up the other.
11:56 We can call them more than adequate and move right along.
11:58 All right, so let's move from that to wheels and tires.
12:01 The Pro R has 15 by seven inch five lug wheels,
12:06 front and rear, and a set of Maxxis Rampage Fury
12:10 eight ply 32 inch tires.
12:12 Tell me about the Maverick R.
12:13 - The Maverick R has 16 inch V-lock wheels from the factory,
12:16 and these are six lug units.
12:18 From what we can tell from the presentation,
12:20 the Maverick R uses lug bolts, not lug studs.
12:23 - That's an interesting choice for a desert machine
12:24 where you're going to be changing wheels pretty often.
12:26 - Right, yeah, they're not the most intuitive thing to use,
12:28 but we should note that it shares a bolt pattern
12:30 with the Toyota Tacoma,
12:31 so there should be a wide range of wheels
12:33 that fit this thing.
12:34 - All right, these 32 by 10 inch ITP Tenacity tires.
12:37 Cam says these are high speed rated tires.
12:40 It's the first high speed rated tire
12:41 they have put on any machine they have ever built,
12:43 which means the top speed on this thing
12:45 is going to be up there.
12:46 How up there?
12:47 Eh, we haven't told us yet.
12:48 - All right, that leads us to the elephant in the room.
12:50 77 inches wide, big wheel base, lots of horsepower.
12:53 Just like the Pro R, the Maverick R is going to be pretty big.
12:56 The Pro R in two seat, guys,
12:58 its total length is 136 and a half inches.
13:01 That's almost 12 feet.
13:02 That's big.
13:03 What do we got on the cannon front?
13:04 - Maverick R is longer, 140 inches.
13:07 - 140 inches?
13:09 So we're talking like proper car size.
13:11 - Proper car size, yeah.
13:12 If you've got an 18 foot trailer,
13:14 you're probably not sticking two of these on there.
13:15 - No more yard trailer and half ton truck for you
13:18 if you buy one of these.
13:19 It is total 78.1 inches wide.
13:21 How about the Pro R?
13:22 - 74.
13:23 We're going in a little narrower than that.
13:25 We thought 74 inches was massive when it came out.
13:28 Can-Am's going to have a bigger footprint.
13:30 Remember when we were shocked that the Pro R
13:32 was visibly bigger than a Jeep TJ?
13:34 - I do, yeah.
13:35 - Yeah, I think we're fixing to be shocked again.
13:38 - All right, how about height?
13:39 I'm looking at 71.5 inches on my side.
13:41 - That's 72.8 for a two seat Razor Pro R.
13:45 So we're a little bit bigger.
13:46 76.5 inches if you go for the four seater,
13:49 which Can-Am has not released specs
13:51 on their Maverick R four seater, have they?
13:52 - Yeah, I mean, they haven't said anything
13:54 about a four seater, but you know it's coming.
13:57 Can-Am's have always been a little bit lower.
13:58 They like that low slung look.
14:00 They like that low roof.
14:02 The Pro R does look tall just sitting there.
14:04 It kind of looks like a pumped up June bug.
14:07 Now what about wheelbase?
14:08 I'm looking at 108 inches for the two seat.
14:09 - 104.5 over here, so it's a little bit more compact.
14:13 The interesting thing about the Maverick R,
14:15 it's got a pretty decent bed capacity.
14:16 You're talking about 200 pounds.
14:18 And part of that is Can-Am integrated
14:20 the link system in the back.
14:21 You've got all those different tie downs
14:22 for all the different accessories
14:23 that Can-Am's been making for all their rigs
14:24 for a long time.
14:25 What about the Pro R?
14:26 - The Pro R's bed capacity is 300 pounds.
14:28 So it's a little bit more.
14:30 It also contains Polaris' proprietary lock and ride system.
14:34 So any of Polaris' accessories will fit right in.
14:37 - Yeah, yeah.
14:37 - It's parodying. - It comes up.
14:38 - Yeah, right.
14:39 I got 12 gallons of fuel capacity.
14:40 What you got?
14:41 - 13.2.
14:42 - Woo, all right.
14:43 What do you have for ground clearance?
14:44 - 16 inches.
14:45 - 17.
14:46 - Ooh, all right.
14:47 - How about dry weight?
14:48 What are you looking at for dry weight?
14:49 - Says here it ranges from 2,144 pounds,
14:52 which I guess is for a two-door,
14:55 to 2,480 for the four-seater.
14:57 What do you got?
14:58 - I mean, that's pretty close.
14:59 I mean, we're talking about 2,250 pounds dry weight.
15:01 So they're pretty neck and neck there.
15:03 - Yeah, and they're both, we should note,
15:05 that's big for a side-by-side.
15:06 They're both big.
15:07 You know, utility rigs routinely weigh more than that,
15:10 but you don't see sports side-by-sides going that heavy.
15:13 - Yeah, I mean, you think our X3,
15:14 our Turbo RR is what, 1,700 pounds?
15:16 - Yeah, about 1,700.
15:17 - Yeah, so that's a pretty big step up.
15:19 - Last but not least, the boring part.
15:21 I got a six-month warranty.
15:22 How about you?
15:23 - Same.
15:24 - Mine's available now.
15:25 When's yours gonna be available?
15:26 - We don't know yet.
15:26 Can-Am has not said when we can expect
15:28 to see the Maverick R at dealers,
15:30 but it is a 2024 model, so shouldn't be that long.
15:33 - Yeah, dune season's coming up,
15:34 so I would expect you can get one
15:36 around Christmas time and not before.
15:38 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:38 - That's the spec sheet, which leaves only one thing.
15:41 - Who are these for?
15:43 - So who is yours for?
15:43 Very similar buyer to the Pro R,
15:45 which is somebody who has access to wide-open desert,
15:49 likes getting out in the areas around Arizona,
15:51 Nevada, Baja, Mexico, and just going flat out,
15:54 or an amateur racer.
15:56 Now, to build a standard racer or a standard Maverick
15:59 into a machine that could compete with one of these,
16:01 you're gonna pay way more money
16:03 than what these things can do out of the box,
16:05 and we've heard very encouraging things
16:07 from racers who have taken Pro Rs,
16:09 bone stock, tweaked a couple things,
16:11 and just gone street racing.
16:13 - Right, and they love to quote
16:14 that they use Polaris's in-house electronic suspension
16:17 on the Razor Pro R, and I have talked to Casey Curry,
16:20 who said he just runs that in his desert racing rig.
16:23 There is no reason to assume
16:24 that the Can-Am will be any different.
16:26 Now, I gotta say, who these aren't for,
16:28 they're both as wide and as long as an aircraft carrier,
16:31 so out here in East Tennessee, unfortunately,
16:34 we'll happily drive them out here,
16:35 but really, they're not gonna feel at home.
16:37 240 horsepower is hard to use in the woods.
16:40 You know, you're pretty quickly gonna hit a tree,
16:42 so they're not really geared to East coasters
16:44 unless you have access to a closed circuit
16:47 or have cut some big, wide trails in your woods,
16:49 and that's just kind of the reality
16:51 of the size and power that these things have.
16:52 On that note, we have to say,
16:54 if this is going to be your first sport side-by-side,
16:57 maybe look elsewhere,
16:58 unless you're downgrading from a trophy truck,
17:00 and I mean that.
17:02 If you've driven sand rails your whole life
17:03 and you wanna see what this whole side-by-side thing
17:05 is about, by all means, go buy a Maverick R,
17:08 go buy a Pro R.
17:09 If you've driven mules your whole life
17:10 and you're like, "What's this sport side-by-side thing
17:12 "about they make rigs for that,
17:14 "Can-Am makes plenty of rigs for that,"
17:16 this might not be your beast.
17:18 - And it's also worth noting that this is not a replacement
17:20 for the regular Maverick X3.
17:21 This is an all-new model,
17:23 so you go all the way from the Maverick
17:25 through the Maverick X3 to the Maverick R.
17:27 - Right, and Can-Am has even revamped the Maverick X3 lineup,
17:30 but rest assured, if you're not sure you want a Maverick R,
17:33 there are so many options in the Can-Am lineup
17:35 that will absolutely scratch that itch
17:37 and maybe fit the terrain,
17:38 your local terrain, a little bit better.
17:40 Thank you for watching.
17:41 That's been everything you need to know
17:43 about the 2024 Can-Am Maverick R.
