ESPN analyst Ryan Clark recently took shots at San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
Transcript
00:00 What did Ryan Clark?
00:01 Say about Brock Purdy. He had a he had about like a two and a half minute
00:05 Not gonna say it's a rant, but he had a lot to say about Brock Purdy
00:09 He unloaded
00:12 He basically said that he was uncomfortable. I mean, it was just so weak. It was like I was I'm really uncomfortable
00:18 I was really uncomfortable earlier this year having to talk about Brock Purdy in the same category as
00:26 Lamar and and
00:30 Allen and and Mahomes
00:32 and
00:33 he basically said that Brock doesn't make his team better that his team makes Brock better and that if Brock were on a different team
00:40 Brock would be bad and that he doesn't lift up the team and yet I think we could go into the Niner locker room and
00:47 Even if we didn't even if we gave him a secret ballot
00:50 I think they would admit that Brock does make them better and his and does you know?
00:56 This guy makes a lot of plays. I mean, it's not just it's not just you know
01:01 He's making them better or it's not just that they're making him better. I think he makes them better
01:05 I think he plays at a really high level and has most of the year
01:09 So I I get it and it's easy after I mean
01:14 It's just so easy after the guy plays his worst game that everybody watched to say that
01:21 But that that that little statement right there is gonna age like crap if this guy bounces back plays well against Detroit
01:28 goes to Vegas and
01:30 Plays really well in the dome and the Niners win the Super Bowl. That's gonna look really really bad
01:36 So good for Ryan Clark. He rolled the dice and nobody's gonna remember I guess except for Niner fans
01:43 But I mean, I think it's total a fallacy to say that that Brock Purdy doesn't make the 49ers better
01:50 I think he does I
01:52 Understand where Ryan's coming from. I mean he has to prove that he plays with the best group of
01:57 Skill players in the league and when you take one guy away the offense kind of falls apart now, maybe that's just one game
02:04 But that's the thing about the playoffs Ryan Clark didn't watch every Niners game this year
02:10 it's not his job to watch every single game of every single team, but
02:13 He'll watch the playoff games and this is where Brock Purdy is gonna write his legacy
02:18 It's great that you had a regular a wonderful regular season
02:21 But these are the games that everyone's gonna remember and this last one was nondescript
02:26 You got to do a whole lot better than that to be considered an elite quarterback
02:30 And you know, you got you got the NFC Championship ahead of you right now if you eviscerate the Lions in this NFC Championship game
02:36 That'll be your legacy
02:39 That will be your leg. Your legacy will change entirely
02:41 So, I mean, maybe maybe Ryan's being a prisoner of the moment, but that's why I like football so much
02:48 These games all that really matter. No one really cares about what Joe Montana ever did in the regular season
02:53 His legacy is 99% playoffs. I love that
02:57 it's also
03:00 You know the better quarterbacks
03:03 generally win, but not always
03:06 Nick Foles
03:08 Eli Manning Eli Manning beat Tom Brady twice
03:11 Nobody would ever sit there and tell you that Eli Manning's better than Tom Brady, but he beat him in two Super Bowls
03:16 So I nobody who should or would ever tell you that Brock Purdy's better than Josh Allen or Patrick my homes, right?
03:24 Nobody has said that
03:26 And that's another one talking about straw man arguments Ryan Clark right there. No one is putting Brock Purdy in that conversation. No one nobody
03:34 So should he be MVP conversation? Yeah, look at his numbers like that's what and everyone understands even Brock understands. Hey
03:42 You're not quite Lamar Jackson
03:45 Maybe one day not now, but there's no shame in that
03:48 There's no shame in that still when the MVP and the Super Bowl in the same year. There's no shame in that
03:54 You don't have to be top five right now
03:56 Right, and those guys are super special. Come on. Yeah, I mean, come on
04:01 Yeah, I watched Josh Allen this weekend the way he threw the ball
04:04 I mean, he's absolutely incredible
04:05 But then also it's kind of a it's a weird thing too because Brock Purdy did go if Kittle doesn't drop that ball
04:12 He's seven of seven on the final drive and he led them from a you know
04:18 So it's like almost like we're kind of moving the goalposts. He can't do it
04:22 does he not he gets credit for that like he now has the
04:27 Reputation as being a guy who can gut it out and come from behind even if he's not playing his absolute best
04:33 We didn't know that about Brock before two days ago. That's a good thing. I mean he did it once
04:38 Could he do it again? Can he do it?
04:41 You know, we'll see we'll see and then
04:44 off game
04:45 Ultimately, it also is gonna come down to you know
04:48 You don't Brock doesn't play against my homes or against Allen or against Lamar. He plays against the defense
04:54 So I just think it's interesting how quarterbacks perceptions change after a weekend like before last weekend
05:00 We're looking at Jordan love is maybe like a borderline top five quarterback now. It's like buddy. You got a ways to go
05:06 You freaking melt it down in crunch time you may not be ready for the big stage
05:11 then you look at Lamar Jackson people were ready to write him off I
05:14 Another bad playoff performance kills it and it's like nah
05:19 Actually, he might be the second best quarterback in the league right now after Patrick Mahomes. I think it's interesting how these little
05:25 Reputations change drastically after a week of NFL playoffs. Well, you know what it is grant everybody, you know
05:31 You got a filibuster on
05:33 The head coach and the quarterback. Yeah, and that's what resonates. That's what moves the needle you could talk about
05:39 Mars performance was important like that was not we're not he needed that and he delivered
05:44 for 152 yards, I mean they you know, they ran for
05:50 229 now he ran quarterback
05:52 120 he didn't turn the ball over and he ran for a hundred yards and two touchdowns. It was really great
05:58 Yeah, but I'm just saying it's like he was really great as a runner
06:03 You know, it's like he threw for 152
06:06 So if you can just two touchdowns if you had four touchdowns
06:11 Okay
06:11 Ran for two and threw for two if you can force and it's gonna be interesting because now Kansas City's defense
06:18 Is really really good, you know can see the Jerry's need you can put the Jerry's need where you saw the that game
06:25 The Buffalo game guess who guess who didn't do squat in that game?
06:31 Buffalo's number one wide receiver Stefan Martin's the Niners with his arm not his legs
06:35 Yeah
06:36 But I mean it was shut down in that game and he was shut down earlier this year against Legere a Snead
06:42 Now we get to see the Jerry's Snead against a flowers and what if he shuts down?
06:47 Zay flowers and then can Baltimore just run it down Chris Jones's throat down the you know down Kansas City's throat
06:55 I kind of like Kansas City this weekend. We'll see but Baltimore is really good at home
07:00 Yeah, but I'll take my home. I don't ever I don't ever pick against Patrick Mahomes. That's a rule
07:04 Probably good
07:07 I think it's a good rule to live by Klessler imperio
07:10 Says it is lions all I'm better than Green Bay and what's up with our D line can't coach Kiseric get them going especially young
07:18 pressure golf
07:21 Here's here's here's the here's the rub. Oh the Detroit's line has better individual players
07:29 Ragnar's the best center and Penaeus was the best right tackle
07:32 Okay, but Green Bay was number two and pass block win rate and they are tremendous pass protectors
07:40 Detroit's offensive lines 14th in pass block win rate
07:45 So they're not as good run blocking where Detroit's lines really good is are not as good pass buck
07:51 They're really good run blockers. I
07:53 Wanted to come back to the the quarterback thing real quick. I'm saying I think I feel after this weekend
07:58 I put Lamar's second best quarterback in the league and Josh Allen number three and what's interesting is you went to
08:04 Passyards for Lamar just remembered
08:07 Josh Allen had like the same game
08:10 He threw for about 150 ran for a lot. He just turns the ball over and Lamar doesn't I think Lamar's better than Josh Allen
08:18 How about that? You want to argue that?
08:20 Josh Allen's got a way bigger arm way bigger arm than Lamar, but Lamar's the Lamar's a
08:26 Maybe the greatest running quarterback the league's ever seen. I mean who's not strength isn't all that important right Brock pretty fan number one
08:33 But I'm just saying I mean, it's not about arm strength. I think Lamar's got arm strength
08:38 It's about it's about you know accuracy and and overall passing
08:43 I like Josh Allen as a passer way more also, Kansas City defense had a little something to do with that
08:51 Curious need I like to me it's my homes and Allen and then Lamar
08:56 Okay, Gavin says only one way to prove the national media wrong when the whole darn thing
09:02 But the real blame needs to go on Kyle if you can't
09:04 Well before we start blaming people, let's let him play the games
09:09 You
09:11 (upbeat music)
