00:01 Aw, sweet, sweet angel.
00:04 Simon and Bub both came from pretty rough backgrounds.
00:07 I adopted them from a kill shelter in Central California.
00:10 He's so happy to be over there.
00:12 Bub had been used as a bait dog in the past.
00:14 That's a good boy.
00:15 That's my boy.
00:17 And Simon had actually been chained up for most of his life,
00:21 so he had never really gotten to see anything at all.
00:23 So both of them had not known a lot of excitement or adventure
00:27 in their lives.
00:28 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:30 The first big thing to do when I got Simon home
00:35 was introduce him to my dog, Bub.
00:37 Bub, what do you think?
00:40 What do you think, misty?
00:43 Bringing Simon home, I definitely
00:45 knew that was going to be a difficult adjustment in some
00:47 ways because of the sheer size of having two big dogs.
00:51 I was definitely concerned because I
00:53 knew both of these dogs had had rough pasts
00:55 and hadn't been properly socialized or trained
00:57 at any point in their lives.
00:59 So I was worried at first.
01:00 I wasn't sure how they would react to sharing space and toys
01:03 and my attention.
01:06 Something just clicked, and they immediately
01:08 became best friends.
01:09 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:12 [LAUGHTER]
01:16 Oh, boys.
01:21 [LAUGHTER]
01:23 I always knew whenever I got a dog
01:29 that I wanted to be able to share adventure with my dog.
01:32 And when I got Bub and Simon, of course,
01:33 I had no idea really how they would
01:35 react to those sort of things.
01:37 And so I just kind of went for it when I got them.
01:39 I remember for both of them, taking them on their first hike
01:43 and just watching them let go of the scared and kind
01:45 of unsure personas that they had up until that point.
01:48 [LAUGHTER]
01:51 About a year and a half after I adopted Simon,
01:55 I noticed that Simon started limping on one of his back legs.
01:58 One day, he just didn't want to put any weight on it
02:00 and was clearly in a lot of pain.
02:02 Hey, what's going on?
02:04 When Bub first realized that Simon was sick,
02:07 he seemed like he could tell immediately
02:08 that his brother wasn't feeling well anymore.
02:10 And so instead of trying to get him to wrestle with him
02:13 or get him to play tug, he would just lick him.
02:16 I took him to the emergency vet.
02:19 No one could quite figure out what was wrong with him,
02:21 but he just kept getting worse and worse.
02:25 It was just a really emotional time
02:26 because two different vets told us that we should put him down.
02:29 And we just saw how much pain he was in,
02:31 and that was just killing me.
02:32 And so we made the decision to amputate his leg
02:35 because we were told it was very likely never
02:37 going to regain movement.
02:38 It was still causing him discomfort.
02:40 [LAUGHTER]
02:42 Hi.
02:44 [BARKING]
02:47 He bounced back to the happy and silly and just wonderful boy
02:52 that he always was.
02:54 Bub just did one quick sniff of where Simon's leg used to be,
02:57 and then immediately he was just happy to have his brother back.
03:02 We noticed he wasn't able to keep up and do as much
03:05 as he used to do before his amputation.
03:08 So I started looking up different options
03:10 for how to help him stay mobile and be able to go
03:12 on adventures with us still.
03:15 I found a wheelchair that seemed perfect for him.
03:19 It was like as if he'd been born in that wheelchair.
03:22 I was worried about what Bub would think, just because he
03:24 can be kind of an anxious dog.
03:26 I kind of thought seeing his brother in this contraption
03:29 might freak him out a little bit.
03:30 But he didn't even give it a second look.
03:32 He was just like, all right, there's my brother.
03:34 We can go run again.
03:36 Once we saw how much he was enjoying being in the wheelchair
03:38 and how much it really opened up his world again,
03:40 a lot of our favorite trails became covered in snow.
03:43 So we just swapped out the wheels, put the skis on,
03:46 and then he was just cruising around.
03:47 Look at him go.
03:48 It's really the most amazing feeling in the world,
04:10 just knowing the life that both of my dogs used to have.
04:14 They're both absolutely perfect, and they just
04:17 make my life so much better.
