00:02 I wanted to take Gigi to the park to help socialize her.
00:08 People were avoiding her.
00:11 They didn't want their dogs playing with her.
00:13 So she ended up playing by herself.
00:15 That just made me feel so awful,
00:17 watching my dog not being able to have fun with other dogs.
00:19 Sometimes when me and Gigi go on walks,
00:22 we'll see people cross the street,
00:24 but I never get like frustrated or mad
00:26 because in my mind, I'm just like, they don't know us.
00:28 They're going off something that they believe
00:30 but without even meeting us.
00:32 The biggest obstacle I would say that me and Gigi run into
00:35 is the prejudice and the stereotypes against both of us.
00:39 We've been told that I look like a typical Pitbull owner.
00:42 People reached out to me and said,
00:46 "Hey, have you ever thought about doing a meetup?"
00:48 Hey, we're about to have our first
00:50 very bully breed meetup.
00:51 Very excited.
00:52 Never thought we'd get to this point,
00:54 but I'm super stoked.
00:55 I know you are too.
00:57 Oh man, I can see it in your face.
00:59 I know that this is going to be our first time,
01:01 so we're going to learn through it and things.
01:03 The first meetup,
01:05 she didn't know what was going on obviously at first.
01:07 So she was just sitting patiently like,
01:08 "Oh, are we just people watching again?"
01:10 And then when new dogs showed up,
01:12 the tail was wagging, she was happy.
01:14 Everything you kind of hope it was,
01:20 it was like even better.
01:22 For me just to see how many people showed up
01:25 and how happy she was.
01:27 She was like, "Okay, cool.
01:27 "Now I do have a crowd that wants to play with me."
01:30 I could tell by the way Gigi started opening it up.
01:34 And I was like, "Okay, I did the right thing
01:36 "by starting these meetups."
01:37 I've had several different dogs,
01:40 but I've always had a special place in my heart for pit bulls.
01:42 I've always been around them.
01:43 And I know the stigma that they have.
01:45 So after the first meetup, I was just like,
01:47 "Okay, I think I want to do a little bit more around this."
01:50 And we've held a lot of different meetups now
01:56 in the San Diego area.
01:58 But my favorite part has been just seeing these dogs
02:02 grow in that space and find their comfort zone,
02:05 find their happy place with their humans.
02:07 In January, 2021, I was just like,
02:18 "Okay, my older lab was getting up there in age.
02:21 "And I wanted them to have a companion."
02:23 I met Gigi and she was just the sweetest,
02:26 kindest little dog.
02:27 So I brought her home
02:29 and it was like an immediate bond between them.
02:31 And then he passed away in December of last year.
02:36 In the first month or two after he passed,
02:38 it was probably the hardest time
02:40 because not only did I lose my first adult dog,
02:43 she lost the only dog that she's ever known.
02:46 So it was like a strong grief period for both of us.
02:49 That was a turning point of our relationship.
02:50 She started to trust me more.
02:52 We just got so used to sitting together,
02:54 taking in our surroundings and people watching.
