Belichick's Few Offers Raise Doubts About his Coaching Future

00:15 And for me, the reason why this stands out so much is it is not that Bill Belichick is
00:20 going to struggle to make money.
00:21 He can pick any network he wants and go become one of their lead commentators in studio.
00:27 It's not that Bill Belichick couldn't pick 1,000 coordinator jobs potentially.
00:31 Honestly, if he wanted, he could probably go get a power five job in college right now
00:35 if he decided he would.
00:37 The thing that I am struggling a bit with, Joe, is the notion that Bill Belichick at
00:41 his age is going to take a year off and come back as a head coach again next season.
00:48 And that's basically where we are because there's no job coming for Bill Belichick this
00:52 offseason head coaching wise in this league.
00:54 No, there's not, but I'm not really shocked the more I think about it, Kevin.
00:58 Part of the reason is look at where we are in regards to the NFL and look at where we
01:03 are in regards to Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.
01:06 After Tom Brady moves on and wins the Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, he drafts Bailey Zappi,
01:11 he drafts Mac Jones, can't elevate the quarterback position, can't put playmakers from an offensive
01:16 perspective around that talent, and they struggle from an offensive identity.
01:22 More importantly, look at what he did in terms of Joe Judge and Matt Patricia, co-offensive
01:27 coordinators, defensive players, a special teams coach, Donnie, and he has them coaching
01:32 the offense.
01:33 He can't even get a grip in regards to coaching this team, and I think he's sort of regressed.
01:38 Now statistically from a defensive perspective, they were good, but not elite.
01:42 And when you have young playmakers like Drake London, Kyle Pitts, B. John Robinson, and
01:47 Tyler Algier, and you look at Smith, Arthur Smith, and he couldn't coach that offense
01:52 up.
01:53 Do you really want to give the reins to Bill Belichick in terms of that type of situation?
01:56 I wouldn't, Donnie.
01:58 Which makes it perplexing, because I think you're right with the way we angle Bill Belichick,
02:02 because for me it was like he's a fantastic coach.
02:05 He just can't be the entire guy in the organization, make every single call, draft picks, free
02:10 agents and the like.
02:11 And we had to find out if he actually wanted to do that or didn't want to do it.
02:14 But if you're going from a defensive perspective and you say, "Okay, look, defense is the way
02:17 to go here."
02:18 Bill Belichick's probably the best defensive coordinator in the history of the sport itself.
02:22 And then you hired Raheem Morris, who also is a defensive coordinator.
02:26 You go Dave Canales, you go even with Callahan as the coach in Atlanta.

02:30 They went offensive.
02:31 That's not what Bill Belichick's cut from that same cloth.
02:34 Belichick being left out for Raheem Morris does make it interesting, but also keep in
02:37 mind sometimes in the NFL world, as Kevin and I talked about this on the radio, organizations
02:42 want to have functioning people all across the board.
02:45 The owner obviously is going to own, not going to push him around.
02:48 But there's football ops, there's, you know, half of the building here with 25 to 30 scouts.
02:53 Those guys want to have a job that has some input.
02:55 If Bill walks into your building, he's the end all be all.
02:57 It's almost like, what are we doing here in the front office anymore?
