Examining the early offseason storylines for Detroit Lions following 2023 NFL season.
Transcript
00:00 John, simply what are your biggest storylines going into the offseason for the Detroit Lions?
00:04 Yeah, Vito, it's really interesting.
00:06 Now we're in the offseason, the Detroit Lions are going to turn the page, wrap things up,
00:10 grade the roster, review everything that went on in the regular season and postseason, and
00:15 now start to look to the NFL Draft.
00:18 But a couple things are going to be really interesting to monitor throughout this offseason.
00:23 Namely, first, what is the extension going to look like for Jared Goff?
00:27 It's going to get done, most likely.
00:29 Jared Goff earned a raise.
00:31 But the question mark is going to be how much and how many years?
00:34 Does Jared Goff become one of the highest paid players in the National Football League?
00:39 That'll be something to monitor.
00:41 Early on, now you recognize too that Brad Holmes is going to have some decisions to
00:45 make on some free agents, some notable ones to pay attention to, Josh Reynolds, CeeDee
00:50 Deuce, Halepuli Vati Vitae, Graham Glasgow, Jonah Jackson.
00:55 So you recognize that there could be some turnover and some players that are fan favorites
01:01 that might not be brought back in 2024.
01:04 Potentially, based on the news this week, it's likely that the Lions coaching staff
01:09 could stay intact.
01:10 Now there could be some shuffling.
01:12 Obviously, Dan Campbell always likes to reevaluate everything from top to bottom.
01:17 So I'm not certain that the entire coaching staff will return, but by and large, I think
01:22 that a good amount in terms of the experience that they had all together is going to pay
01:28 dividends.
01:29 I think the coordinators potentially could both be back and a lot of the assistants could
01:33 be back as well.
01:34 But there could be some adjustments to some position groups or things like that moving
01:38 forward.
01:39 And then, Vito, when you look at the offseason, you look at one of the big things that people
01:45 are going to pay attention to is what are going to be the offseason needs in regards
01:49 to what they're going to fill in the draft.
01:52 And I think that clearly, after a review of what we just saw in the NFC Championship
01:58 game and throughout the season, that defense namely needs to be upgraded.
02:03 And I think that the priority is going to be there.
02:05 I know that they're going to look at good football players at a lot of different spots,
02:09 but I surely expect this front office to upgrade the defense, namely at the cornerback spot,
02:16 the number one spot that struggled all year that potentially could have cost this football
02:20 team dearly.
02:22 And I think that when you look at this football team, improving the defense and the secondary
02:27 will bode well moving forward.
02:29 So this is a big offseason, just like everyone is.
02:32 But this offseason could set the tone for what could be a run for many, many years.
02:37 John, thanks for all the insight.
