00:16 In El Salvador, electoral authorities
00:22 closed polling stations amid low turnout and complaints
00:25 of irregularities as the Supreme Electoral Court prepares

00:37 as part of the ongoing Israeli attacks
00:39 on several localities in Gaza.
00:41 Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:49 I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:53 We begin with the news.
00:54 Venezuela commemorates on February 4th
00:56 the Day of National Dignity on the 32nd year
00:59 of the civic military rebellion, led by Commander Hugo Chávez.
01:04 The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro,
01:06 participated in the commemorative acts
01:08 where he received the national caravan of Bolivarian fury,
01:11 which came out on Saturday from several states of the country.
01:15 During his speech, the Venezuelan president
01:18 recalled that the rebellion of 1992
01:21 was against the imperialism that governed the country
01:23 through the Venezuelan oligarchy.
01:26 Maduro assured that elites and surnames who had power
01:29 until the arrival of Commander Chávez
01:32 will never govern the nation again.
01:34 Today, 32 years after February 4, 1992,
01:47 I want to raise our eyes to heaven
01:49 and say thank you, Commander Chávez.
01:52 Thank you for your rebelliousness.
01:54 Thank you for your courage.
01:56 Long live Chávez.
01:57 During his speech, the Venezuelan head of state,
02:03 Nicolás Maduro, recalled the historic events of February 4
02:07 and the rejection of the Venezuelan people
02:09 to the model imposed by the International Monetary Fund.
02:13 In fact, I could say that the '90s had not even
02:21 begun when they tried to impose in Venezuela
02:23 the neoliberal colonialist model of the International Monetary
02:27 Fund on February 27 and 28, 1989.
02:32 They went down and down and down and down.
02:34 And the people took to the streets
02:36 and said not to the International Monetary Fund
02:39 measures in popular rebellion.
02:42 The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro,
02:44 compared the military rebellion led by Commander Chávez
02:48 with the one led by the libertarian SimĂłn BolĂvar,
02:51 assuring that both were a rejection to imperialism
02:54 and the oligarchies.
02:58 The '90s, and again, like 200 years ago,
03:02 Venezuela in the vanguard of February 4, 1992.
03:06 The military rebellion led by our commander Chávez,
03:10 down with imperialism.
03:12 The revolution of BolĂvar, of the liberators,
03:16 has arrived again.
03:17 And so it was.
03:18 BolĂvar arrived with his cause, with his flag.
03:22 The great national caravan Bolivarian Fury
03:28 arrived in Caracas to commemorate
03:30 the Day of National Dignity.
03:32 Thousands of citizens from different states
03:34 took part in the great national caravan
03:37 to mark 32 years of the rebellion of February 4, 1992.
03:41 The Day of Dignity is a historical gesture
03:44 that consolidated the Bolivarian revolution thanks
03:47 to the civic military union that achieved the return
03:50 of Commander Hugo Chávez.
03:52 During the activity that commemorated
03:53 the struggle of the Bolivarian revolution,
03:56 the first vice president of the Socialist Party of Venezuela,
03:59 Diosdado Cabello, recalled that on February 4, 1992,
04:03 Venezuela managed to subvert the neoliberal project that was
04:07 trying to impose on the country.
04:10 Also, members of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces
04:13 carry out a civic military march through the streets
04:16 of Fort Tuna, the most recognized
04:19 and important military installation in the country.
04:22 The activity took place on the occasion
04:24 of the celebrations for the National Dignity Day.
04:26 In El Salvador, electoral authorities
04:34 announced the beginning of the closing of polling stations,
04:37 and the Supreme Electoral Court prepares for the transmission
04:41 and proceedings of results.
04:43 Amid lower voter turnout and allegations
04:46 of irregularities and bias, the presidential and legislative
04:50 elections were held in El Salvador,
04:52 and the counting process has begun.
04:55 More than 1,500 polling stations opened their doors
04:58 at 7 AM local time to receive around 6 million Salvadorans
05:02 called to vote to elect the president, vice president,
05:06 and the 60 members of the National Assembly.
05:09 It is worth noting these elections took place
05:11 amid complaints filed by the opposition sectors of abuses
05:15 of power by the ruling party.
05:18 In this regard, the claims were presented
05:20 before the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of the nation,
05:23 aiming to expose what they call political advantages
05:27 and the use of hunger as an instrument of coercion,
05:30 promotion of candidacies in spite
05:33 of the electoral silence and threats of dismissals.
05:39 Amid election day, Salvadoran citizens
05:41 stressed that the country needs to improve the education sector
05:45 besides improving security.
05:48 Honestly, besides security, I'd like
05:51 to hear more about education.
05:53 I feel like it's an area that hasn't
05:55 been developed very much, and I think it's very important,
05:58 especially for young people who are waiting
06:00 for better opportunities.
06:04 We are hoping for progress more than there is currently
06:07 in the country.
06:08 I hope that the proposals of the current presidential candidates
06:11 will be implemented as they were proposed during the campaign.
06:16 The Guatemala Migration Institute,
06:18 IGM, reported that 11 people were killed in a traffic
06:22 accident on Saturday.
06:24 Nine people died at the scene at kilometer 133 of the route
06:28 leading from Guatemala City to the Pacific coast,
06:31 while two people died in a health center.
06:34 According to the IGM, nine of the deceased were Cubans
06:38 and were traveling north to reach the United States.
06:41 The accident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning
06:44 and involved a truck carrying sugar cane, a car with over five
06:48 passengers, and a motorcycle.
06:50 Guatemala initiated the process of communication
06:53 so that the deceased could be repatriated
06:56 by the Cuban authorities.
07:02 Argentina's security ministry said on Sunday
07:05 that federal police and Interpol agents arrested businessman
07:08 Diego Hernan Dirizio and his partner Paraguayan ex-model
07:12 Julieta Nardi last Friday in the province of Cordoba,
07:15 accused of leading a network that trafficked arms
07:18 to Brazil.
07:20 Hernan Dirizio is considered the biggest arms smuggler
07:23 in South America and was the president of a company
07:26 dedicated to the firearms trade, of which Nardi
07:29 was vice president.
07:30 The company acquired the weapons in Croatia, Turkey,
07:33 the Czech Republic, and Slovenia,
07:35 brought them legally into Paraguay,
07:37 and imported them into Brazil, where
07:40 they were sold to a third party who
07:41 was responsible for delivering the weapons
07:45 to local criminal organizations.
07:47 According to the Argentine Ministry of Security,
07:50 the company had imported 25,000 weapons since 2012.

08:14 Welcome back to "From the South."
08:31 Local media in Palestine on Sunday
08:33 reported that several civilians were killed and others injured
08:36 as part of ongoing Israeli attacks
08:38 on several localities in Gaza.
08:40 In this regard, the report adds that the Israeli bombardment
08:43 targeted civilians in the al-Hakkar area
08:46 in the city of Deir al-Bala.
08:48 On the other hand, three other civilians
08:50 were killed in a drone strike targeting an area
08:53 near al-Saraya alone, with another Israeli attack
08:56 on the family home in the al-Rimal neighborhood that
09:00 claimed the lives of four civilians.
09:02 In this regard, Palestinian authorities
09:04 also warned that the Israeli helicopter gunships
09:07 opened heavy fire on the Buraj refugee camp in central Gaza,
09:12 while in Tel Aviv's war planes have targeted
09:14 the vicinity of the Abu Barkh as Sidiq Mosque
09:18 at the al-Sabra neighborhood.
09:20 Since the beginning of the Israeli aggression,
09:22 more than 27,365 people, mostly children and women,
09:28 have been killed and more than 66,630 injured.
09:33 On Sunday, Canada joined the United States
09:40 in imposing sanctions to four Israeli settles
09:43 involved in terrorist attacks against Palestinians
09:46 in the West Bank.
09:47 Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
09:50 said that the Israeli colonist violence against Palestinians
09:53 in the West Bank is absolutely unacceptable
09:56 and puts peace and stability in the region
09:58 and the path towards the two-state solution at risk.
10:02 On February 1st, US President Joe Biden
10:05 had issued an executive order targeting Israeli settles
10:08 involved in attacks and acts of violence against Palestinians
10:12 in the occupied West Bank.
10:14 The US will also impose financial sanctions and visa
10:17 bans against the four settles involved.
10:21 In 2023, some 10 Palestinian civilians
10:24 were killed by Israeli settles.
10:26 The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has requested
10:35 the US administration to impose sanctions
10:37 on Israel's Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir,
10:41 who called for the expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
10:45 The request for sanctions was made through a communique
10:48 which condemned the Israeli minister's statements
10:51 as threatening, colonialist and racist,
10:54 which represents a blatant incitement
10:57 to the complete annihilation of the Palestinian people
11:00 in the Gaza Strip.
11:01 The Palestinian Foreign Affairs Ministry
11:03 says such statements by an Israeli minister
11:07 go against the consensus of the international community,
11:10 the ruling of the International Court of Justice,
11:13 and against the resolutions of the United Nations Security
11:16 Council.
11:22 On Sunday, in Germany, the United States and the United
11:25 Kingdom Air Force launched at least 48 attacks
11:28 against six provinces of the country.
11:31 In this sense, the spokesman for the Ansarola movement,
11:35 Yaiha Tsare, declared that 13 attacks were launched
11:39 against Sanaa, the capital of the country,
11:41 11 against the province of Taiz, 9 against the region of Al-Hudaydah,
11:46 and another seven bombings against the provinces
11:49 of Al-Baidah and Hajah.
11:51 Since mid-January, the United States
11:53 has ordered several rounds of strikes against Ansarola
11:57 targets in Yemen, some in coordination
11:59 with the United Kingdom and other allies.
12:02 While the Ansarola movement's senior officials
12:05 maintain that Washington and its allies' aggression will not
12:08 deter them from attacking Israeli-linked vessels
12:12 as they continue their genocidal actions against the Gaza
12:15 Strip.
12:20 The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces
12:23 condemned the US aggressions on the west of the Anbar district
12:27 and confirmed that such actions will not go unpunished.
12:30 Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces Chief Faleh Al-Faydah
12:35 described the US aggression against the Akashat and Al-Qaim
12:39 regions as a direct attack on the position
12:42 and dignity of the nation, and urged the Iraqi parliament
12:45 and all political forces to take a clear position regarding
12:48 this action.
12:49 Al-Faydah said he will not accept
12:52 the blood of the Iraqi people turned cheap political currency,
12:56 and he said Washington's aggression will not
12:59 go unanswered.
13:00 The Iraqi official denounced the United States' manipulation
13:03 of the issue of terrorism and demanded the immediate
13:06 withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
13:08 We say in Iraq where Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Siddiq
13:19 Dani visited the Al-Hussein Military Hospital in Baghdad
13:23 to see the wounded of the US attack west of the country.
13:26 He wished them a speedy recovery and ordered the hospital staff
13:31 to provide them with all necessary care and treatments.

14:07 Namibia's Vice President Nangolo Mumba is sworn in
14:11 as president following the death on Sunday
14:13 of previous president Hague Gengob,
14:16 a veteran of the country's liberation struggle,
14:19 who died at the age of 82 on Sunday.
14:22 Tributes to the 82-year-old statesman poured in
14:25 from African leaders who saw him as a hero of the anti-Apartheid
14:31 struggle.
14:32 Recently, Gengob supported South Africa's complaint
14:35 against Israel on the Degenocide Convention
14:38 and condemned Namibia's former colonial ruler, Germany,
14:41 for opposing the case.
14:43 Serving his second term as president,
14:45 he revealed last month that he was being treated for cancer.
14:49 Former Vice President Nangolo Mumba
14:51 was inaugurated as Gengob's successor
14:54 as president on Sunday, along with new Vice President
14:58 Netumbo Nandi Daidwa.
14:59 During this difficult period of mourning,
15:09 I urge all Namibians to remain united
15:14 and to keep the bereaved family, the bereaved Gengob family
15:20 and clan, in our prayers.
15:23 I take on this heavy mantle, cognizant of the weight
15:35 of this responsibility, to serve all people of Namibia
15:42 with utmost dedication and commitment
15:46 in the service of all citizens.
15:49 In Senegal, the decision to postpone
15:51 the presidential elections was welcomed
15:53 by the former ruling Democratic Party, whose presidential
15:57 candidate is Karim Oued.
15:58 Oued's supporters were seen celebrating
16:01 the delay of February 25th presidential election
16:04 by President Maki Solt. The decision
16:06 is due, among other things, to the conflict
16:08 between their candidate and the Constitutional Council,
16:11 accused of corruption by the former ruling party.
16:15 Several opposition figures rejected President Maki Solt's
16:18 decision to postpone the election,
16:20 and at least two of the 20 presidential candidates
16:23 say they would continue with their campaign scheduled
16:26 to begin on Sunday.
16:28 It is planned that Solt's term ends on April 2nd.
16:31 The Senegalese electoral code requires 80 days
16:34 in advance of the elections, which
16:36 means that the earliest a new vote could be held
16:39 is the last week of April.
16:41 This is President Maki Solt's balance sheet,
16:52 and it is a damage and upsetting because he almost
16:55 left with his head held high.
16:57 But now, fortunately, he's showing the true face.
17:00 The masks are falling off.
17:02 He's trying to pull off an electoral holdup.
17:05 What's that?
17:06 It is a constitutional coup, and we won't accept it.
17:09 Never in Senegal's political history
17:14 have we seen a situation like this.
17:18 It's a dangerous precedent to be able to postpone
17:23 presidential election on the eve of its start.
17:26 It's unprecedented.
17:30 Meanwhile, in Senegal, opposition demonstrators
17:33 and police clashed after President Maki Solt announced
17:36 the indefinite delay of upcoming presidential elections
17:40 scheduled for February 25th, 2024.
17:43 Protesters gathered in the capital city
17:45 at the call of opposition candidates.
17:47 The president pointed out that the reason for the delay
17:50 in the elections is to carry out an open national dialogue
17:54 in order to meet the necessary conditions that
17:56 guarantee a free, transparent, and inclusive election.
18:00 In turn, all presidential candidates
18:02 expressed their rejection and assured
18:04 that they would carry out their electoral campaigns in spite
18:07 of the official cancellation.
18:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
18:13 In Chile, the number of fatalities
18:29 due to the wildfires ravaging the central region of Valparaiso
18:33 has risen to 99.
18:35 The Forensic Medical Service said
18:37 they are working with multiple authorities in the region
18:40 to optimize the recovery, identification,
18:43 and delivery of the remains.
18:45 Representatives of the Ministry of the Interior
18:47 and Public Security have deployed
18:50 to the affected areas which remain
18:53 under a state of emergency in order
18:55 to expedite rescue efforts.
18:57 Meanwhile, the government has decreed
18:59 two days of official mourning as of February 5th.
19:06 On Sunday, the president of Chile,
19:08 Gabriel Boric, in the midst of the forest fires
19:10 that hit his nation, reiterated that the priority
19:13 of his administration is to warranty human lives.
19:16 The priority today, as we have said, but we reiterate,
19:22 is to save lives.
19:23 There are still active outbreaks to attend to the wounded
19:26 and to control those outbreaks that are being
19:30 fought as quickly as possible.
19:34 We have taken the decision to maintain the curfew,
19:36 and the curfew will be maintained as long as necessary
19:39 without any complex.
19:40 In China, heavy snow hit in central and eastern regions
19:47 has disrupted transportation in Anhui and Hubei provinces
19:52 amid the current spring festival travel rush.
19:55 Since Wednesday, snowfall has occurred in several cities
19:58 in Anhui province, affecting several stretches of highways
20:02 in the province.
20:03 Due to the snowy and icy conditions,
20:05 more than 95 expressway peak stations
20:08 have reportedly closed until Sunday morning
20:11 across the province, impacting many solo travelers
20:14 during the search and travel.
20:16 The local meteorological department
20:18 predicted that the snow will continue until Monday morning,
20:21 with accumulated snowfall expected
20:24 to reach up to 20 centimeters.
