00:00 I personally think this coaching matchup is going to be something that's talked
00:06 about consistently all throughout the week so why not get it started right now.
00:11 Andy Reid against Kyle Shanahan, a rematch of the Super Bowl four years ago
00:16 and we have somebody that has now Andy Reid a two-time winner of the Super Bowl.
00:22 His record as a head coach 258 and 51 overall with Kansas City he's 128,
00:29 128 wins and he is the fifth winningest head coach, excuse me,
00:35 now the fourth winningest head coach in NFL history.
00:38 Just Shula, Hallis and Belichick in front of him.
00:41 So that's overall wins obviously includes playoff wins as well.
00:46 But Andy Reid a big part of the Chiefs success along with Patrick Malone's
00:51 that duo as good as his career playoff record as a head coach 25 and 15
00:56 and with Kansas City 15 and 7.
00:59 His career Super Bowl record as a head coach 2 and 2, obviously 2 and 0 with the Chiefs.
01:03 He's NFL coach of the year, he's three-time sporting news coach of the year,
01:07 he's got all kinds of accolades of being a successful head coach.
01:10 But what we're really going to focus on with him is do he and Steve Spagnolo
01:15 have the better of Kyle Shanahan and Steve Wilks.
01:19 Just a few years ago the Niners had a 10-point lead against an Andy Reid coach team
01:24 and Steve Spagnolo is the defensive coordinator and they couldn't--
01:28 Kyle Shanahan and company couldn't close it out.
01:31 Obviously we have different coordinators since then with the Niners.
01:36 Steve Wilks now the defensive coordinator, Robert Sala was the defensive coordinator then
01:41 and was now head coach of the New York Jets.
01:43 So we've seen some changes on the San Francisco side.
01:46 On the Kansas City side it stayed exactly where they wanted to be,
01:51 winning championships and Steve Spagnolo doing as good a job this year
01:54 as he's done in his entire tenure as a defensive coordinator,
01:57 not just in Kansas City but his entire career.
02:01 I mentioned Snead and I mentioned McDuffie earlier, Chris Jones, an all-pro player,
02:06 Nick Bolton, just an incredible linebacker as well.
02:10 So what I think about a lot with Andy Reid is those first 15 plays.
02:16 I'll think about it with both coaches, those first 15 plays, the script.
02:20 Andy Reid a master at it. What does it look like coming out of the gate?
02:23 How much do they take advantage of Steve Wilks and this Niners defense
02:27 which has not been as sharp against the run as they were earlier in the season?
02:32 So a big part of what we're looking to do.
02:34 Now Kyle Shanahan on the other side, I think he's under the bright spotlight
02:38 as much as anybody this entire week because Kyle Shanahan was obviously
02:43 the offensive coordinator in Atlanta when they blew a 28-3 lead.
02:47 Now the head coach in San Francisco when they blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.
02:53 A 10-point lead with 8 minutes to go and Jimmy Garoppolo who started the game 18 of 21
02:59 ends up the game 2 of 10.
03:01 Why do I mention those numbers?
03:03 Because with a 10-point lead and a team that was successful running the ball,
03:07 although Christian McCaffrey is not a part of that offense,
03:10 but they still were successful running the football, why did they go to the pass?
03:13 Why did they leave it in Jimmy G's hands?
03:15 It's a question that Kyle Shanahan will have to answer for the rest of his career.
03:19 And if he's not able to take advantage of all of the weaponry that he has on offense
03:23 this time around, will that start to build?
03:27 Will it be when Kyle Shanahan can't win the big one?
03:29 I tend not to take stock in those types of hyperbolic statements.
03:34 This guy can never win a Super Bowl, that coach will never do it.
03:37 How many times have you been proven wrong when you said that will never happen?
03:41 I hate to say it, but it's certainly not canon.
03:45 It's not a situation where you'll be taking that all the way to the banks.
03:50 This Niners team is a very good team, but I do have concerns about Kyle Shanahan.
03:54 I have concerns about Andy Reid up against Steve Wilks,
03:57 Steve Spagnuolo up against Kyle Shanahan.
03:59 I think those are the matchups you're really looking for.
04:01 It's easy to compare the head coaches, but it's really the mastery of what
04:05 Kyle Shanahan and this Shanahan scheme can do
04:08 versus Steve Spagnuolo and what he's been able to do.
04:11 Effectively shutting out Lamar Jackson for the final three quarters of that game.
04:16 A measly field goal in the final three quarters.
04:19 We have that to note.
04:23 Obviously on the flip side, it's Andy Reid going up against Steve Wilks.
04:28 Andy Reid, with all of this experience, Steve Wilks is a highly experienced
04:32 defensive coordinator and has a defense that has a lot of talent on it,
04:37 but they haven't looked as good in the second half of the season
04:39 as maybe they were in the first half of the season.
04:42 Some other storylines beyond that.
04:44 19 years ago, Kyle Shanahan had just ended his first season as an NFL assistant
04:49 coach with Tampa Bay, and he watched his father Mike win consecutive Super Bowls
04:53 with the Denver Broncos in the '90s.
04:56 Shanahan, with a victory this week, would be the first father-son duo
05:00 to take home the Lombardi Trophy.
05:03 On the flip side, Christian McCaffrey's father, on the Niners side,
05:07 Christian McCaffrey's father, Ed, was a wide receiver on each of those Broncos teams
05:12 and was a wide receiver on the 49ers team and is the last one to win the Super Bowl
05:18 all the way back in the 1994 season.
05:21 Mike Shanahan was the 49ers offensive coordinator because the Shanahans
05:26 and McCaffreys bring it full circle and bring a victory home.
05:29 So a lot of common ties with historic 49ers teams can bring it all full circle.
05:36 So I really think those are interesting threads, but I am very focused on what Andy Reid,
05:42 what Steve Wilks can do to try to manipulate what Andy Reid can do.
05:47 To the Ravens' credit, they did lose the game, but they shut out the Chiefs
05:52 in the second half, five punts from the Chiefs in the second half.
05:55 That defensive coordinator is now a head coach in Seattle, Mike McDonald.
05:59 So what can Steve Wilks do that was similar to what the Ravens were able to do?
06:04 It's just the problem that I mentioned in the first hour is even when you tie the Chiefs
06:08 one arm behind their back, they're able to play with the other one.
06:12 They can possess the ball for a long period of time and grind out the clock,
06:15 or they can score quickly and take advantage of every piece of field
06:19 you're willing to give them.
