00:13 Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says the division of powers

00:19 between Malaysia's federal and state governments is often misunderstood,

00:23 especially their respective jurisdictions over land and religion.

00:28 His comments come after a nine-judge panel ruled that the Kelantan Legislative Assembly

00:34 had no power to pass 16 provisions in its syariah enactment

00:38 because the offences in question were already covered under federal law.

00:43 While visiting Melaka, Anwar also called the rally outside the federal court today dangerous

00:50 and said the situation was being politicized by the opposition.

00:55 He said the opposition wanted to play up religious sentiments

00:59 simply to portray the unity government as opposing Islam,

01:02 even though the application by the two women was filed when Perikatan Nasional was in power.

01:08 Earlier today, more than 1,000 people gathered outside the Palace of Justice to protest the decision.

01:15 In 2022, Nick Ellen Zurina and her daughter, Tunku Yasmin Nastasha Tunku Abdul Rahman,

01:23 filed a constitutional challenge to the Kelantan Assembly's authority to pass the syariah enactment.
