00:00 I'm sure at this point everyone has seen Emmitt Smith's comments
00:03 how he's disappointed in the Cowboys culture, frustrated.
00:07 What do you make of Emmitt saying all this?
00:09 Well, and he joins a pile of former Cowboys.
00:12 You know, Aikman has said this and Irvin has said this to some degree.
00:15 Dion told you this three years ago.
00:17 Yeah.
00:18 That there's just something about the makeup of this group
00:20 that they're not built for the moment, I think is one of the phrases that Dion used.
00:24 We can also talk about a lack of clutch.
00:26 I think Dion once brought that up as well.
00:28 But Emmitt goes a little bit deeper into the culture thing.
00:32 And I believe on one of his interviews he actually used my phrase,
00:36 I couldn't be more proud, #53brands.
00:39 Which doesn't mean that guys are selfish necessarily.
00:42 It doesn't mean that guys are bad guys.
00:44 It means to me what it's always meant is you come into this building
00:48 and you look around and you see that this is very much about marketing and sales and branding.
00:55 And you're tempted as an individual to think,
00:57 well if the whole organization is built that way, why can't I have a little bit of my piece?
01:02 And that's what Emmitt Smith's talking about here.
01:05 He mentioned podcasts.
01:06 Right.
01:07 He mentioned branding.
01:09 And it was interesting that he did.
01:11 Micah at the Super Bowl, I think it was on Friday,
01:15 said, yeah, we got to get rid of the distractions.
01:18 But he said that on his podcast.
01:21 Yeah.
01:22 On a stage at Radio Row at the Super Bowl.
01:27 Well, it's ironic that he either doesn't understand that he's talking out of both sides of his mouth,
01:36 or maybe he meant that's the last podcast I'm going to ever do.
01:38 It has been pointed out.
01:39 I've seen the Bro Bowl Mama drama people, the family members say,
01:44 well back in the day they had radio shows, didn't they?
01:46 Well, wait a minute.
01:48 I was there back in the day.
01:51 They didn't have, cowboy players didn't have radio shows in 1990.
01:55 They didn't have radio shows when they were 1 and 15, 1 and 13, whatever.
02:02 Well, not a lot of people want to hear from you when you're 1 win.
02:04 That's correct.
02:05 That's correct.
02:05 Well, I guess people want to hear from cowboys now.
02:11 They were America's team then.
02:12 They're America's team now.
02:13 But that phenomenon of guys starting to blossom and become their own thing happened after they won a Super Bowl.
02:22 Right.
02:23 Not after they've gone 29 years without having won a Super Bowl.
02:27 Crazy.
02:28 And again, one of the differences is you can just kind of go down to your basement and turn on podcasts and go.
02:34 So there's no...
02:35 Yeah, the world is different.
02:37 The world is different.
02:38 There's a lot more distractions in general for most athletes and for most people.
02:45 It's a great point.
02:46 It's a tree with branches on it.
02:48 The radio show, you didn't have a million people commenting on it to your face like you do now on Twitter.
02:56 Yeah.
02:56 You had a hundred people show up at the restaurant and cheer for you for what you said.
03:03 That was the feedback you got.
03:04 And again, I hosted a bunch of those shows.
03:06 We were involved with everybody from...
03:08 I mean, I did a Jerry Jones show.
03:12 I did a Mark Twain, and yes, Mark Twain, the very private offensive lineman, and Dale Hellestra, the long snapper, Wally and Leon did that show.
03:23 So I was involved.
03:24 Jason Garrett had a show that I did.
03:25 I did the Mike Zimmer show.
03:27 I did the Jason...
03:29 Jay Novacek show.
03:30 We did the Michael Urban show.
03:32 But not when they were rookies winning one game a year and not in a climate where everything you say now goes crazy.
03:42 I guarantee you, Dale Hellestra is a very funny guy.
03:44 Mark Twain, a funny guy.
03:46 The shows we did with Novacek, Zimmer, they were insightful and informative and funny and maybe even controversial.
03:53 Right.
03:53 But they didn't spread like wildfire in creating problems the way controversial comments now do.
04:00 I'm sure sometime in 1993, somebody's mom said something bad about the lineup, but I don't remember it.
04:07 But I don't know that I'm ever going to forget C.D. Lamb's mom saying, "We need to get Dax Ass out of Dallas or trade C.D. Lamb to Houston where I live so he can play with C.J. Stroup."
04:18 I will never forget that.
04:19 Whereas the silly things that went on the radio, I just remember I was sitting there.
04:23 I don't remember all the specifics.
