00:00:24 Welcome into another episode of First to the Floor. Ben Ballast here. Thank you for joining us.
00:00:29 I hope you're doing well. Alongside me, Wayne Spooney and Jake Eisenberg. Spooney, how's it going, man?
00:00:34 Dude, if I could sing, I would be busting out. I want to dance with somebody right now.
00:00:39 I love this team. They're playing so good. And like, I almost felt bad for the Nets at the end of that game, dude.
00:00:45 But what a win.
00:00:47 [Singing]
00:00:53 That gene doesn't run in the family, that's for sure. But I mean, what a kind, kind present.
00:00:59 What a thoughtful present of the Boston Celtics to give us that type of performance as we go into the break.
00:01:06 Mazzullo saying, you know, it could be good, you know, it could be bad, depending on how you handle the emotions of the wins or the losses.
00:01:12 And I'm like, I'll tell you one thing is for sure. I'm going to handle this six game wins trick very irresponsibly.
00:01:17 I'm going, yeah, I'm injecting it all in one go. Let's do it.
00:01:21 All the propaganda. Yeah. A lot of what we've already talked about, the Joe quotes, the Luke Cornett singing on the bench,
00:01:27 going to make a reappearance in a later segment where we cover the best moments of the season so far, which is going to be a lot of fun.
00:01:32 Got a lot of clips uploaded here and streamed, but it's going to kick back, run through them all,
00:01:36 hopefully not get kicked off YouTube and have a good time reminiscing on what's been an awesome season so far.
00:01:41 But Jake, you're in New Zealand, correct me if I'm wrong, and you had an interesting flight over there meeting all of Australia on the plane.
00:01:48 Yeah. So yeah, in New Zealand and getting ready to get on the plane and all of a sudden I just see a couple of giant individuals wearing Brisbane Bullets t-shirts.
00:02:00 I'm like, okay, there's like three or four of them. There's the New Zealand Breakers, the team that RJ Hampton played for in the NBL.
00:02:08 And I'm like, I'm in 7B, seat 7B, you know, pretty close to the front. No big deal.
00:02:14 But it's unclear if the whole team's on the plane at this point. And I see it's like, this dude's coming on the plane, he's right across the road.
00:02:23 He's like 6'10", 6'11". It's not Bainsey, but one of his teammates switches with him. He's like, hey, I've got the exit row.
00:02:31 I'm only like 6'3". You can have the exit row. And the 6'11" dude gets up out of his chair and starts moving back.
00:02:38 But then it becomes very clear the whole Brisbane Bullets team is on the plane. And then I see him, the beautiful man, the man who sets the bone-crushing screens.
00:02:47 The man who decided to start hitting corner three-pointers in the Philadelphia 76ers series in the '17/'18 season.
00:02:54 It was all of Australia. It was Aaron Baines. And my whole body was just like, oh my God.
00:03:00 And I messaged the Discord, I messaged my parents. Everybody's like, you have to tell him. You have to talk to him. You have to tell him to get on the podcast.
00:03:08 So I've got a three-hour flight now. I'm just like, okay, just relax. You know, you've got a long way to go before you have a chance to actually say anything.
00:03:15 And by the time I got there, I was like, I don't know, man. He's just been squished into this box when he's 6'10" broad, something that I cannot relate to.
00:03:24 And he's got his headphones on, he's got the Bose on. I'm like, I'll leave him be. But if an opportunity presents itself, I'll play it by feel.
00:03:31 And we're going through the passport customs thing, and I'm like right behind him. I'm stalking him.
00:03:36 You know, I'm just a few steps behind. No chance of him ever seeing me, obviously.
00:03:41 And somehow I make it through the customs things first, and he's like right behind me.
00:03:47 And I'm like, okay, this actually could work better because I can get to the baggage, turn around and pretend like, oh, what?
00:03:55 Fancy seeing you here.
00:03:57 Aaron Baines.
00:03:58 And of course, I'm wearing my vintage Boston Celtics shirt from the 80s that says DJ all the way on the back of it.
00:04:06 And I turn around, I'm like, Bainesy, Celtics legend. How are we?
00:04:10 And he's like, give me a little bit, I'll be honest, give me a little weird look.
00:04:13 He's like, oh yeah, big fan. I'm like, oh yeah, dad's from Boston.
00:04:18 You guys ready for the big game tomorrow? You pushing for the playoffs?
00:04:22 He's like, oh yeah, see how we go.
00:04:24 And he's like, so what do you do for work?
00:04:26 I was like, funny you should ask, Aaron.
00:04:29 Yeah, I do a Celtics podcast. We would love to have you.
00:04:35 Obviously, you're a busy man in the midst of a playoff run here.
00:04:38 So maybe after the offseason, he's like, oh yeah, maybe in the offseason.
00:04:43 I'm like, okay, yes.
00:04:45 And then he's just like, where do you live?
00:04:47 I'm like in Tassie.
00:04:48 He's like, oh wow, Coldwater, I'm from Brisbane.
00:04:51 I don't like swimming down there.
00:04:52 So we just have this chat for like three or four minutes.
00:04:55 And I'm like, all right, I'll leave you to it.
00:04:58 I'm like, I don't want to bother this guy for too long.
00:05:01 And as I'm left, I'm like, look, we really miss your bone crushing screens on the court with Al Horford.
00:05:06 So I catch you later.
00:05:08 And he's like, yeah, see you, man.
00:05:09 And it was the best.
00:05:11 I was terrified.
00:05:12 I was shaking.
00:05:13 Oh, man.
00:05:14 It was awesome, though.
00:05:15 He really just gave me the time of day.
00:05:17 It was very nice.
00:05:18 Dude, that's awesome.
00:05:19 Dude, love Bainsey.
00:05:20 Obviously, as a fellow Aussie, that was a great stretch as a fan,
00:05:24 as an Australian fan having Bainsey on the team.
00:05:26 And I don't know, it sounds like it wasn't a straight up no with the invitation onto the pod.
00:05:32 I know.
00:05:33 My mom's been telling me I need to get business cards for the podcast.
00:05:36 I can just hand them out any time I see someone wearing a Celtics gear or for when I run into ex-Celtics legends.
00:05:42 But as soon as I left, I was like, fuck, I should have said, man, you.
00:05:47 I looked up the basketball reference straight afterwards.
00:05:50 I was like, he had taken like 21 threes all season and was 14 percent.
00:05:54 And then he got to the playoffs and shot 23 threes and was like 47 percent.
00:05:58 And that was like he came out of nowhere.
00:06:00 He just started shooting corner threes and was a huge factor in the Philly series.
00:06:04 I wish I would have researched that on the walk from the plane to the baggage claim.
00:06:08 I could have been like, bro, you shot like 23 threes in the playoffs, two more than the whole season.
00:06:13 And he would have been like, what the?
00:06:14 It actually made me worse, honestly.
00:06:16 Yeah, you could have got an analytics job with the Brisbane Bullets, man.
00:06:20 But yeah, it was awesome.
00:06:22 They're all fucking so huge, like even the NBL teams.
00:06:25 And like, I don't know, man, just and I could have joked being like not quite living the high life of the private jets around the NBA travel, squeezing into these tiny economy seats.
00:06:35 But no, it was sick.
00:06:37 Yeah, that's awesome.
00:06:38 Love to hear.
00:06:39 I've been excited to hear that story all night to squeeze it into the pod.
00:06:43 Thanks, Jake.
00:06:44 We've got an awesome show coming up, very clip heavy as we just kick back here and enjoy some of the best moments of the season so far.

00:07:20 The links for all of the above are in the description below.
00:07:23 Now, guys, before we get to the best moments of the season, 136 to 86.
00:07:28 Good for a 50 point deficit for all of the math nerds out there.
00:07:32 Spoonie, what stood out to you from this game?
00:07:35 It's a hard game to evaluate, right?
00:07:37 Yeah, it's very difficult to evaluate.
00:07:39 I guess I would probably say the defense, number one, even though we hung 136.
00:07:44 And I just feel like this team is starting to really be connected on both ends of the floor and understand the chemistry is really coming together on both ends.
00:07:55 And the Nets just have absolutely no offensive talent.
00:07:58 I mean, like that purple patch McHale Bridges had like for two months last season looks like it was just a hot stretch and like he's a nice third option, but has absolutely no chance of being a number one option on like a high level team.
00:08:14 It felt like at times they were like running offense.
00:08:18 They were just like, oh, my God, what do I do with this basketball?
00:08:21 I'm at the three point line and there's four seconds left.
00:08:23 I guess I'll just shoot it.
00:08:25 So the defense was super locked in.
00:08:28 I mean, Tatum, this is the best stretch of his career.
00:08:31 I'm just saying it right now.
00:08:33 He is playing at some sort of level right now with the passing, the decision making, the defense, like everything he does on both ends is just at an incredible level.
00:08:45 And I think like the biggest thing for me is just like his usage hasn't changed.
00:08:50 His assists are way up in the last ten games.
00:08:53 And his turnovers haven't changed either.
00:08:56 So he's just like turned into I don't hate he do Turkoglue's passing with like Carmelo Anthony scoring and like Kawhi's defense.
00:09:06 And it's like this dude is on his way to like the best player in the NBA if he keeps up this pace.
00:09:11 And like I'm not afraid to say that.
00:09:13 So and probably most importantly, Walshie.
00:09:17 We got a Walshie.
00:09:19 First quarter Walshie.
00:09:21 Yeah.
00:09:22 Dude, that was so good.
00:09:23 I mean, I was watching this game like sneak watching it on my lap on my phone at work, like typing while looking down, pretending to be working, but really in my mind, in my body vibrating as well.
00:09:33 She came in wondering what things must have been like in the playback room, Jake, as well.
00:09:37 She comes in a surprise while she entered in the first quarter.
00:09:40 I almost didn't even notice because like at first glance, like, you know, I got the chat going.
00:09:45 We're chatting away.
00:09:46 You know, you're mid timeout.
00:09:47 There's a there's a ball, Derek White.
00:09:49 There's a couple of shiny heads rolling around.
00:09:51 Like it took me took me a second to figure out that while she was out there.
00:09:55 But once I did, I was like, oh, my God, we got to lock the fuck in right now.
00:09:59 And I mean, look, it was it was a little bumpy performance for Walsh.
00:10:04 But the defense, like clearly, dude's arms are insane.
00:10:09 Like he's got like Rob Williams type arm, like seven foot three wingspan.
00:10:14 I think we looked up yesterday, which is just just absurd for a wing.
00:10:19 And so like you see the defense like he because he's obviously not like thick enough and strong enough yet as like being a 19 year old kind of can kind of get bumped off some spots.
00:10:28 But he's so athletic.
00:10:30 He kind of gets back in the play and because he's so long can still contest stuff.
00:10:34 And man, he had he had that one steal like in the midcourt and then was gone one on one on the break.
00:10:40 And oh, man, you can see him thinking about what he was going to try and do.
00:10:44 And just yeah, he got rookied on that one.
00:10:47 And the man, the garden would have just blown off if if he would have been able to convert that one.
00:10:52 But I wonder I don't know if it's obviously Al was out.
00:10:55 Obviously, Jalen, you know, more importantly, was also out.
00:10:58 So like you see while she potentially because like my favorite player obviously is gone to one abandoned.
00:11:06 Yeah, all right.
00:11:08 The line is in Portland.
00:11:11 Most evens actually looking all right with Memphis.
00:11:13 But yeah, no Banton.
00:11:15 So like, well, she's kind of like, is he the 11th guy?
00:11:20 12th guy, maybe like a head of speed.
00:11:23 And I guess that's really it.
00:11:26 That's it.
00:11:28 And so and like because obviously Tillman still out as well.
00:11:31 So I don't know if it's a sign of maybe things to come was just a spot.
00:11:35 But KP kind of talked about it in the press being like, I think that was good for us.
00:11:39 We got to be a little bit more focused, a bit more alert.
00:11:41 We put the young guy, the rookie guy in and in early in the game.
00:11:45 And we always got to be thinking about it.
00:11:47 That was good for us.
00:11:48 You know, something a little bit different, something a little bit more exciting.
00:11:50 Spice it up, you know, in this long season.
00:11:52 And I mean, please spice it up, Joe, because we want more.
00:11:57 Yeah, it's spiced up things for me.
00:11:59 It worked for sure.
00:12:00 Yeah, this first of all, he's obviously not quite the NBA savant yet.
00:12:04 Jordan, while she's looking a little sped up there, which is pretty typical of rookies,
00:12:09 particularly those who have come in the second round and they're a little bit more raw and they've got to get more up to speed.
00:12:14 And he got a rough whistle as well.
00:12:16 I think that travel that he got was pretty unfair because on one hand, you're like, come on, he's new.
00:12:20 Like, give him a chance.
00:12:22 Like, don't be so rough with the, no, harsh with the whistle rather.
00:12:25 That was unfortunate.
00:12:26 But this entire team was like inappropriately locked in on defense.
00:12:30 And we know that Walsh can come in and like uphold that standard.
00:12:33 And I say inappropriate because you guys kind of mentioned him.
00:12:35 It was.
00:12:36 Which is kind of unfair, like to be that good offensively while also simultaneously that locked in defensively against a sub-par team, a well under 500 team.
00:12:45 Trenton Watford, high scored for the Brooklyn Nets with 15 points, Mikael Bridges, 10 points, a minus 30 in this one, which was insane.
00:12:54 Spooner, you mentioned it earlier.
00:12:55 Like, it was just the Tatum show again.
00:12:57 Taylor Snow had this tweet after the game.
00:13:00 Jason Tatum has logged 27 efforts of at least 20.7 rebounds and seven assists in 491 career games.
00:13:07 He did it 20 times in his first 482 games and he's done it seven times in his last nine games.
00:13:13 So Tatum be cooking, I believe is what the kids would say.
00:13:17 Well said.
00:13:18 I don't know, this passing leap, obviously it's nine games or whatever, but this is the best that he's been passing the ball for that amount of games in his career.
00:13:29 Like, it's very obvious.
00:13:30 Like that feathery lob that he had to Chris Tapps that we ran on the feed here earlier.
00:13:35 Like, I mean, the short roll passing has become like really, really good.
00:13:41 And when teams are constantly trapping and trying to find ways to make him uncomfortable, it's so valuable and so impactful that he's able to find guys and get the offense and get the defense in rotation.
00:13:53 And then you're just firing the ball to high IQ guys, like elite scorer, elite mismatch guy.
00:13:59 Al Horf is going to make the right decisions.
00:14:01 Like, if he's going to make these passes, like, I don't know what that means for this team.
00:14:06 Like, they were already the best team in the league.
00:14:08 And then he all of a sudden has taken a playmaking leap.
00:14:11 Like, I think it's maybe a little too early to like really confirm the fact that he has taken a legit, but like nine, 10 games is a pretty good sample size.
00:14:22 And so I guess we're going to see, I mean, it almost reminds me of when the league shut down for COVID and Tatum was in the midst of like the best pull up shooting streak of in the history of the NBA.
00:14:32 And then we had to wait to come back and it's like, wonder what would have happened if we'd never stopped playing basketball, but take a little break here and we come back.
00:14:40 Hopefully he can continue this, this incredible passing, but like this last 10 games, he, he should be pretty firmly in like the top five of the MVP conversation.
00:14:49 I saw someone in the chat here.
00:14:51 We saw Stephen A. Smith on national TV today talking to, it's really the first time I've seen Tatum really talked about on, on national TV in that conversation so far this year.
00:15:02 And I don't know, I've been seeing some MVP ballots with, with like Kawhi and stuff ahead of Tatum.
00:15:09 I don't really understand it because he seems to get dinged more than anybody for having a good team.
00:15:15 Like Kawhi Leonard doesn't have James Harden and Paul George and allegedly one of the deepest rosters in the NBA.
00:15:23 But when it's Tatum, it's like, oh, it's super team.
00:15:26 He's, he's, he's the Brock Purdy of, of the NBA.
00:15:30 And I just, I looked at this earlier, Jason Tatum is in his seventh season.
00:15:35 He has missed 36 games in seven years, six and a half years, which is like, that alone is absurd.
00:15:42 The Celtics are 16 and 20 in those games.
00:15:45 So it's like, obviously the sample size is small, but there are below 500 team without Tatum in his entire career.
00:15:51 It's like, he is the super team.
00:15:53 Like this is all great, but none of, none of this is a 65 win team unless Jason Tatum is on this team doing everything that he does.
00:16:01 Like he should be smack bang top five in the MVP conversation amidst it now that he's been on this run.
00:16:06 And I think it's just fucking double standards for the Celtics always.
00:16:09 Everybody's always trying to nitpick everything about this team.
00:16:12 And that really is encapsulated when people talk about Tatum as well.
00:16:15 Like he's doing everything at an elite level and he deserves more respect.
00:16:20 Thank you, Stephen A for bringing his name to the forefront.
00:16:23 Ask me next time if you need Tatum propaganda, because he was just clearly reading a sheet of paper of stats,
00:16:28 which included Tatum's 37% in the non-paint, in the non-restricted paint area.
00:16:33 And I'm like, don't read that.
00:16:35 That's not the number to read off.
00:16:37 Like that's the one spot on the court that he's not good at.
00:16:40 So Stephen A, I appreciate it, but come to the right place for Tatum propaganda, please.
00:16:45 Lead Tatum propagandist, Jake Eisenberg.
00:16:48 That's right.
00:16:49 With Kawhi, I think there's an element of it.
00:16:51 It's the clippers, like the forever cursed, perpetually bad clippers.
00:16:55 How could anyone potentially lead them to the number one seat or wherever they're at right now?
00:17:00 I think it feels like a heavier feat, like dragging shit uphill on Kawhi's part.
00:17:05 And I think he's getting a lot of undue credit.
00:17:07 Oh, he's getting a lot of due credit as well, let's be honest.
00:17:10 But for leading that team to where they are now.
00:17:12 And also given the injury history of some of their more prominent players as well, I think, is where...
00:17:17 At a national TV layer, which is pretty shallow, let's be honest.
00:17:20 That's where a lot of that credit is coming from.
00:17:22 Back to the game here, though.
00:17:23 A few other things to get to.
00:17:24 Chris "Taps" Wolzingas, awesome again.
00:17:27 He did leave the game again, injured.
00:17:29 And yes, he was available to come back.
00:17:31 But it's definitely an unsurprising trend.
00:17:34 Like it's just so crazy.
00:17:36 And it like genuinely keeps me awake at night.
00:17:38 How much on a nice edge this whole thing is.
00:17:41 This whole shebang is with just like the health of Chris "Taps" Wolzingas.
00:17:44 And how easily injured he is.
00:17:46 And a lot of that is just there's just so much surface area.
00:17:49 He's a large Latvian man with huge clown shoe feet.
00:17:53 Whenever they come down, there's just statistically a higher chance that it's going to collide or come down on top of something else.
00:17:59 Because of how much of him there is.
00:18:02 But it is happening a lot.
00:18:03 And he is just injury prone.
00:18:05 Like even the eye thing in Indie many, many games ago.
00:18:09 Like he is just generally more injury prone.
00:18:13 It is worrisome.
00:18:14 Do you feel like Spoonie, the team, has a handle on it at least?
00:18:18 As far as like how to manage it, how to prevent as many hazardous situations as possible?
00:18:24 Or am I just like wishful thinking here?
00:18:26 No, no.
00:18:27 I mean like there's only so much you could do with a 7'3" guy, right?
00:18:30 Like he comes down on somebody's foot the wrong way and the season's essentially over.
00:18:34 Which is absolutely terrifying.
00:18:36 But we at least have -- I think they clearly had a plan for him.
00:18:42 A minutes load for him.
00:18:44 You know, he's getting a lot of rest.
00:18:46 Like I think a lot of these dings that he's sitting out for are just like, you know, he can rest because he's not an all-star last year.
00:18:54 But they're just keeping him out just to keep him fresh.
00:18:58 Keep him for the playoffs.
00:18:59 I think, you know, there's an argument to be made that he just shouldn't play for the rest of this season until the playoffs.
00:19:05 I agree.
00:19:06 I mean it's insane, but you could actually make a pretty cogent argument that it's like why bother?
00:19:11 Have him play like two games after the all-star break?
00:19:14 Like why not?
00:19:15 But that's not going to happen.
00:19:17 But, yeah, I think they've done a really good job of just like managing him and kind of managing his role.
00:19:22 Because not every game is he like kind of that high-volume post-up guy.
00:19:27 There are games where he does it, like the Houston game where we really need him.
00:19:30 But there's also games where he's just kind of like running, picking pops, a post-up like three, four times.
00:19:36 And then we play Miami and he's just roughhousing with Bam.
00:19:39 He's down there fighting everybody.
00:19:41 So I think as good as you can do with somebody that size, that injury-prone, the Celtics have done a great job.
00:19:48 I don't think a lot of these things where he leaves the game, I think that's just like pure caution, nothing to worry about.
00:19:55 But I am perpetually worried every time he jumps.
00:19:59 Like it's just terrifying every time he's in the air.
00:20:02 And sometimes he really gets up.
00:20:04 Like he launches himself up for these alley-oops and they look sick.
00:20:06 But like we're forgetting, I think like the entry-level fan doesn't understand the pain of like the fully entrenched like hooks-in fan
00:20:13 who's like every time he leaves the ground you're like "Ugh!"
00:20:15 You cower in fear as he's soaring through the air like the Latvian beast that he is.
00:20:20 Dude, yeah, like it's the barest layer gliding through the air is a sight to behold.
00:20:27 But like there is absolutely a massive part of me that every time he launches himself through the lane I'm like holding my breath.
00:20:35 Yeah, it's like "Dude, chill! Like save it!"
00:20:39 But all that being said, he is still on pace to play just over 60 games.
00:20:44 Which like if I gave you that before the season that would be more than enough really.
00:20:50 Like I would have, you're absolutely right, Smooney.
00:20:54 It's like "Can we just play once a week? Really? Like what are we doing here?"
00:20:58 Like but he's on the Bill Walton plane.
00:21:00 Like he is the Bill Walton for the 2020 Celtics here.
00:21:05 And he's taking them to a new level, the '85-'86 Celtics.
00:21:09 Bill Walton played 19 minutes a game.
00:21:12 And in the playoffs he played 18 minutes a game.
00:21:15 And obviously when Puzingas is playing, he's playing a bit more than that.
00:21:19 But it's a similar program.
00:21:22 We know the power of this guy.
00:21:24 And it's just like without Puzingas this team is still really good.
00:21:28 I think without Puzingas this team can still make the finals.
00:21:33 It's just when like, if he doesn't get hurt in the playoffs, I think there's a real chance we get to the finals and we've lost like three or four games.
00:21:41 Yeah, shorter series, which is huge.
00:21:44 That's sort of a cascading effect down through the rest of the team as well.
00:21:47 So he's hugely important.
00:21:48 But I agree that we can get it done one way or another.
00:21:51 As a way of sort of moving through this game quickly and moving on to the rest of the show,
00:21:55 I'll rattle off some topics here and you guys can each choose one of them.
00:21:58 So there's five.
00:21:59 There's Derek White, who has had a bit of a bounce back.
00:22:01 He shot 50% from three in this game, 50% from three in the last game as well.
00:22:06 Hauser had his best game as a starter by far.
00:22:09 We had Proamp in this one, the lead scorer for the Celtics.
00:22:12 Cornet dominance, I want to call it.
00:22:14 Like he was, I mean, everyone was dominant in this game.
00:22:16 Let's be honest, there wasn't a bad performance all around.
00:22:18 And then O'Shea Preset slams down the windmill dunk in transition there, which also featured a screaming Luke Cornet,
00:22:24 which we'll get to later if you hang on with us here.
00:22:27 Spooning off those topics, which excites you the most?
00:22:30 All right.
00:22:31 I was critical about Hauser against the Heat.
00:22:34 I thought he got roasted defensively.
00:22:36 This is just a great Hauser game.
00:22:37 And I think like he's starting to get comfortable offensively in a way he has not been kind of his entire career.
00:22:46 Like, I don't know if it was this Brooklyn game or the one in Brooklyn, but Tatum had like a pump fake and dropped it to him in the short roll.
00:22:53 And he took like three dribbles and like picked a beautiful pass to the corner.
00:22:57 And it was swing swing for a wide open three.
00:23:00 And like the shots back, like he's just burying threes again.
00:23:04 He had one like crazy one at Brooklyn where he was just like flying off the screen, caught it, maybe traveled and then buried a deep one.
00:23:13 And like he's kind of rebound.
00:23:15 I think he had five rebounds to assist a steal like that.
00:23:20 This was just a great Hauser game.
00:23:22 And like, if that's what he's going to give us, like he's going to have a role in the playoffs.
00:23:26 It might not be a huge role.
00:23:28 But as long as he gets that defense back up to a level that we saw earlier this year and all of last year, because teams have kind of started to figure him out, figure out the types of guys that can attack him, figured out like you got to run them through multiple screens and he gets lost a little bit.
00:23:44 But like he he'll adjust, he'll adjust.
00:23:47 He's a really smart player.
00:23:48 And like he's more athletic than he maybe looks.
00:23:51 And he's got good size.
00:23:53 He's a legitimate six, seven wing.
00:23:55 So, just great Hauser game.
00:23:58 Love to see it.
00:23:59 Glad the shots back.
00:24:01 Yep.
00:24:02 41.2% on the season from three.
00:24:04 Like guys a sniper is beginning.
00:24:06 We're going to get another run where like every time it touches his hands, we're going to be like, yep, time to start chugging back the other way that things going in, which is so it's good to see that be like he's doing his thing.
00:24:16 I like that he does the little things.
00:24:18 Now he'll give you another couple of possessions here and there with an offensive rebound.
00:24:22 But he does the little things as well, which like he's not just purely a shooter.
00:24:26 Like he is providing value on the rest of the game of basketball.
00:24:30 But Pritchard, I mean pro-amp, this guy, this guy was cooking dude.
00:24:34 This guy's been really good lately.
00:24:36 And like there's something special about Peyton Pritchard in a blowout.
00:24:42 I don't know what it is.
00:24:43 Clearly, it'd be fun to see him on a team where he's like a legit six man or even like a starting point guard just to see exactly what's possible because like when he has a complete green light, like he's able to pull from 30 feet.
00:24:55 He's able to get coming off screens and cross some guys over like man.
00:25:00 And he's talking to the like, because at first everybody wants Walsh.
00:25:03 The crowd's like, we want Walsh, get the ball to Walsh.
00:25:06 But then Pritchard starts cooking everybody's and then the crowd's just like, no, it's all right.
00:25:09 Go pee.
00:25:10 Let's get him up.
00:25:11 But then he starts looking for Jordan Walsh.
00:25:13 He got Jordan Walsh on open three in the corner, which he missed.
00:25:15 But I just like seeing Pritchard, you know, get a chance to really show what he's capable of because he's obviously still playing a smaller role than he would probably like.
00:25:24 And someone asked him in the press, like, how do you feel about your role and whatever.
00:25:29 He's like, we're focused on winning.
00:25:32 I'm enjoying winning.
00:25:33 I'm looking forward to winning.
00:25:34 Winning a championship.
00:25:35 Winning a championship.
00:25:36 It's like, talk to him, Peyton.
00:25:38 Let's go.
00:25:39 I love it.
00:25:40 I love it.
00:25:41 Yeah, I was tingling after that one.
00:25:43 Look, we're going to come back in a moment with the Shard and Frodo report because there has been some roster movement with one of our closest rivals.
00:25:48 But first, a quick word from our sponsor.

00:26:09 FanDuel, official sports book partner of the NBA.
00:26:38 Yes, that's right.
00:26:39 It is the Shard and Frodo report.
00:26:40 And there has been some movement with one of our closest rivals, the Milwaukee Bucks, who, according to Woj and several others online, have signed out of the buyout market, rather, Danilo Gallinari, agreeing to a deal with the Bucks for the rest of the season there.
00:26:55 Jake, I know Danilo Gallinari, long coveted by yourself as a potential buyout pickup by the Celtics.
00:27:02 He goes to one of our closest rivals, the Milwaukee Bucks, who need him for his defense, I'm guessing.
00:27:07 Firstly, it's important to note the intro there.
00:27:10 If you're not watching on YouTube, it's worth just coming to check out the new Shard and Frodo intro that Ben has pulled together.
00:27:17 I haven't seen Kill Bill, but I have seen that scene on YouTube before.
00:27:21 And it's absolutely beautiful.
00:27:23 The production keeps going from strength to strength here.
00:27:26 But yeah, this is personally sad for me, for us to not be able to play.
00:27:30 We actually might still be able to play the Gallinari song if we get to the playoffs and they actually have to play Gallinari.
00:27:38 And he just...
00:27:39 [laughs]
00:27:40 Like, they call him the Italian rooster, and he just turns into a barbecue rooster.
00:27:45 It's gonna be... that might be the time we actually get to play it.
00:27:49 But like, the thing about the Celtics is like, you can kind of talk yourself into a variety of players because you don't have to play against the Celtics.
00:27:58 Like, Andre Drummond can't play in the playoffs if they play against the Celtics.
00:28:03 Gallinari, I thought, could play in the playoffs for us because there are very few teams that can really, really destroy...
00:28:10 I mean, obviously, Galli maybe is gonna have issues at times, but it's like...
00:28:13 The Celtics are like the one team where it's like, "Oh, that guy probably can't play in the conference finals against the Celtics."
00:28:18 But that's not a problem that the Celtics have because that's who we are.
00:28:22 But he can't play against the Celtics, so I'm not really sure.
00:28:26 Like, he might help them technically, like that makes them a better team because they didn't have him before, but like...
00:28:32 How's he gonna play against the Celtics? I don't really see it.
00:28:36 He can't play against Indy.
00:28:39 Like, dude, he can't play against anybody in the playoffs.
00:28:43 Look, I'm pretty sure I was on here when we signed him to the mid-level and saying, "I think he's washed."
00:28:48 And I'm not exactly sure why we did the mid-level signing for him.
00:28:52 And now, like, dude, congratulations, you have worse Bobby Portis.
00:28:57 Well, Bobby Portis is already like, submarine-ing your defense.
00:29:01 So, I get it if you're the Bucs. It's like, okay, why not?
00:29:05 Like, we got an open roster spot because we shipped out Robin Lopez.
00:29:09 You know, he's better than literally no one, and he can still score it a little bit.
00:29:14 But like, he can't play against Indy. Can he play against the Magic?
00:29:18 I don't think he can play against Franz, Impalo.
00:29:21 I'm not sure who he can play against.
00:29:23 I like that a little bit more.
00:29:25 Yeah, I like it a little bit more, but I think those guys would completely roast him.
00:29:28 He might give it back to him a little bit on the other end offensively.
00:29:32 But, I mean, he can't play against the Heat.
00:29:35 You know, Spoh will absolutely scheme around it.
00:29:37 He'll be in every single-- he'll be running through seven screens of possession against Miami.
00:29:42 He can't play against the Knicks. He can't handle Julius Randle.
00:29:45 And he can't-- maybe against the Cavs, you can try and hide him for those ten minutes
00:29:50 when-- what's his name there? The wing that's terrible, whose name I am forgetting.
00:29:55 Karis LeVert?
00:29:57 No, not Karis LeVert.
00:29:58 Miang?
00:29:59 No, no, the bad guy who doesn't play anymore.
00:30:02 Dean Wade?
00:30:04 No, no.
00:30:05 Dylan Windler?
00:30:08 You know who I'm talking about.
00:30:09 You can't shoot a decent defender? Is that--
00:30:11 Yeah, yes, yes. He was the fourth pick over the years.
00:30:14 Oh, Okoro.
00:30:15 Yes, Okoro.
00:30:16 Like, if Okoro sees eight minutes, Gallo can hide on him for eight minutes, and that's about it.
00:30:21 So, I just-- like, this does nothing for me.
00:30:23 It doesn't move the needle at all for the Bucs in the playoffs.
00:30:26 But hey, just like Doc Rivers, maybe it raises their floor a little bit.
00:30:29 So, congratulations, Milwaukee. Maybe you'll win 51 games instead of 50.
00:30:33 Worse Bobby Portis. What an evaluation, and yet so accurate.
00:30:37 Yeah, the extent to which I care about this is just being completely bummed out that we can't play the Gallo song on a regular basis.
00:30:44 That's basically it. Like, who really cares?
00:30:46 And as a Celtics fan, not threatened by that acquisition.
00:30:49 And hopefully, it leads us to wait with some poise and sign someone who can have a little bit more of an impact on the Celtics beyond what Gallo would have been capable of.
00:30:58 All right. I think we should get to the meat of this podcast, which is the best moments of the season so far.
00:31:04 What a season. It's been so fun. The Celtics are so insanely fucking good.
00:31:09 We've had a lot of fun. There's been tensions as a fan base, particularly online and Twitter, because expectations have been so high.
00:31:17 I think the discourse has been troublesome at times, I think, just because of how high everyone's expectations are.
00:31:25 And yet, you cannot complain about where we're at right now.
00:31:28 And that is through all fronts of the Celtics. Coaching, players, talent, health.
00:31:33 Thank God, touch wood, everyone's fine right now.
00:31:36 I hope that we can say that in a couple of months' time.
00:31:39 But things are really, really good. It's been a lot of fun.
00:31:41 And so we thought, with the All-Star break now at our heels or at our toes or whatever the correct wording is, we'll get to it.
00:31:49 At our toes.
00:31:51 We thought it was high time to get to the best moments of the season so far.
00:31:57 And I'll throw to you guys, because we all sort of kept the run sheet blank to keep these somewhat of a surprise to each other.
00:32:03 And to the members of our Discord, who first of all, get exclusive access to our run sheet.
00:32:08 So join the Discord. You can chat with us. You can view our run sheet.
00:32:11 I was live streaming me making the Schadenfreude intro the other day, and I think one person jumped in for like five seconds and then jumped out again.
00:32:18 You get that kind of access. It's a lot of fun.
00:32:20 Jump into the Discord there. The link is in the description.
00:32:22 Spoonie, I'll throw to you first. What comes to mind?
00:32:25 We won't go in any particular order here, but what's been one of the standout moments of the season for you so far?
00:32:29 Okay, we trade beloved Celtics Marcus Smart for a tall Latvian dude who was on the Washington Wizards last year.
00:32:38 It's like, how's he going to fit? How's he going to play defense?
00:32:42 And then in the literal opening game of the season, we play his former team, the New York Knicks.
00:32:48 Jalen Brown, I guess, has a severe concussion.
00:32:52 I don't know, passes out on the court for three minutes and just continues to play somehow.
00:32:58 We cough up, I believe, as a seven point lead.
00:33:01 The Knicks got to with like four or five minutes left.
00:33:04 And then Chris Stapps, poor Zingas, the new guy, absolutely whips out, as Ben said, at minimum seven incher and just smashes nine incher.
00:33:16 Yeah, smashes the New York Knicks, gets like six free throws, hits a huge three, completely steals the game for the Celtics.
00:33:23 And we're all thinking like this is probably going to work out just fine for Chris Stapps in Boston.
00:33:28 Back out the floor for the Knicks.
00:33:33 Porzingis is going to shoot it and knock down a three.
00:33:38 Back to Barrett. Barrett takes. No.
00:33:42 Good job by Porzingis. Excellent. Draws a foul. Wait, which way is that foul going?
00:33:47 The foul on Hardenstein, I think they just teched up Porzingis.
00:33:54 Oh, that's a tough shot.
00:33:56 I mean.
00:33:57 And then we're in the penalty situation, so Porzingis will shoot the penalty free throws.
00:34:02 Found White there. About three and a half, four on the count.
00:34:08 Double team.
00:34:11 Oh, that's huge. That is huge.
00:34:15 Unreal.
00:34:18 Tatum. Porzingis is bumped.
00:34:23 And he's going to get the line. Hardenstein's going to be able to foul.
00:34:29 Sorry, Jake. I'll try to be more fluid getting to the clips.
00:34:33 And you guys lead the charge on this one because I've been in transit, so I'm not 100% on everything that's coming here.
00:34:40 For him to do this immediately, game one, crunch time, like, perfect.
00:34:49 Like every concern, every emotion that we had after we lost Marcus was immediately eased, massaged, as soon as Porzingis got on the court.
00:35:00 Like, for him to do that in crunch time in MSG on opening night, it was like, oh my God, I see the vision.
00:35:07 Brad Stevens has done it, and we're on pace to win 64 games.
00:35:13 It was great. I would add to that, just as part of the best moments of the season so far, just acquiring KP and Drew,
00:35:20 and like the emotional parachute that acquiring Chris Tapp's Porzingis was versus losing Marcus Smart.
00:35:26 We all maybe hoped, and some of us dreaded, that one day we would lose Marcus Smart because he, you know, a movable piece, movable contract,
00:35:34 and while being, I guess, like the backbone of the organizational culture, just due to the size of his contract
00:35:40 and maybe needing to open up more shots and more looks and touches for the Jays, he might eventually get moved.
00:35:46 And for that to happen, you know, like I said, cushioned by the emotional parachute of acquiring someone like Chris Tapp's Porzingis,
00:35:52 it just made that transition so much easier. And then I'd add to that the Buck's schadenfreude of acquiring Drew Holiday.
00:35:58 Like, they're so hyped about getting Damian Lillard, and then suddenly we introduce this element of doubt by acquiring their former all-star point guard
00:36:07 who can like D up the fuck out of Damian Lillard and just completely rains on their parades, which was a lot of fun.
00:36:14 But going into the preseason there, after acquiring those two guys, we get to see Brad's vision.
00:36:21 [Music]
00:36:35 >> Three rounds of shoulders. Holiday kicks it. Porzingis stakes it. That's nice.
00:36:43 >> See Tatum clean up that floor. If they're going to go with a small lineup, Tatum at the four, he's going to have to rebound.
00:36:51 >> He can do that all night again. >> He looks so much bigger.
00:36:58 >> Porzingis gets it back, sets his feet, buries the three. >> Another open shot for the Boston Celtics.
00:37:05 [Music]
00:37:32 >> I mean, that's been all of us pretty much every game, right?
00:37:36 >> It really has, though. Like, you watch it on the game. >> Holding onto the TV.
00:37:39 >> You're like, is this allowed? Is someone going to stop us from doing this? Because it doesn't seem fair.
00:37:46 >> Yeah, man. This Brad Stevens guy knows his nose ball.
00:37:50 >> We'll throw to you, Jake. What's been one of the standout moments of the season for you so far?
00:37:53 >> All right, so I was thinking back and going through just some of the wins and the losses, and the Celtics played the Sixers early in the year.
00:38:03 It was the second time we had played them. No Porzingis, no Jalen Brown, and Al Horford.
00:38:11 This was like the first game that we got like, okay, Al Horford, he still has it. Al Horford still owns Joel Embiid.
00:38:19 He had five blocks in this game, and it starts here, straight off the bat.
00:38:25 Al Horford D'ing up Embiid, strips him, goes the other way, and you're like, oh, he's still got it.
00:38:31 But late in the game, five minutes to go, Maxie beats Hauser and Horford, protecting the rim, swats him, pushes it the other way.
00:38:39 Swing, swing, Tatum finds Horford, finds Derek White, three. Celtics go up seven with like four and a half to go.
00:38:48 And that pretty much kind of seals the game. And like that game was just like, we're still finding him early in the season,
00:38:55 finding our feet, trying to figure out what's going on. We're not sure like, you know, where Horford is.
00:39:00 We were still kind of acclimating to the new version of Derek White.
00:39:04 We didn't quite realize that Derek White had become what he had become yet.
00:39:09 And in that game, he was so immense, beat Horford five blocks, two on Embiid, and was like, okay, the big dog, still.
00:39:17 Doesn't matter, Joel Embiid, regular season MVP, regular season, postseason.
00:39:21 Al Horford still has this guy under lock and key. And that was Chef's Kiss, one of my favorite games of the year.
00:39:29 So my favorite part of that game was going into the Sixers Reddit afterwards.
00:39:35 It was all about like, this Embiid can't even beat 45-year-old Al Horford.
00:39:42 Like, what are we doing here? Like, just trade everybody.
00:39:46 Great game. Great Al game. And like, maybe the first game where it was like that D. White signature big time shot that we needed really bad.
00:39:57 That was like kind of the first one I remember where it's like, oh, this dude, like, he's so good.
00:40:02 He's done it like 20 more times this season. But that's like the first one it feels like.
00:40:07 Yeah. Al Horford defending Joel Embiid effectively. A tale as old as time.
00:40:13 And who else is old as time is Al Horford, who is maybe the one person to have defeated Father Time up until this point.
00:40:20 He continues to defeat Father Time and Joel Embiid, it seems.
00:40:23 It's maybe one of the most disappointing factors as a Celtics fan of Joel Embiid being out is that there is an upcoming Sixers game.
00:40:28 And I guess unless he comes back unexpectedly, we won't get to see that matchup.
00:40:32 But always fun and always a highlight of the season to beat the Sixers.
00:40:35 I'll add best moments of the season so far. And Jake, I'm going to be stealing some of your words here.
00:40:41 Please. Like who would have thought that this beautiful Latvian man would have been the Jalen Whisperer.
00:40:47 And of course, I'm talking about cookies and cream like I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams that this would have been like the duo.
00:40:55 I think we always would have naturally expected it to be JT and KP linking up on pick and rolls and, you know, assists going both ways and all kinds of highlights.
00:41:03 But as you see here, if you're watching on YouTube, it's assist central for these two.
00:41:07 Assist city as they just have flawlessly and seamlessly connect almost every game.
00:41:13 And then we come to realize that off the court, they carpool together.
00:41:17 They live in the same building.
00:41:19 We heard on the podcast recently, The View from the Rafters podcast, that they broke down in Chris Sapp's Porzingis 1999 Mercedes on the side of the road.
00:41:26 Had to call a helper from the Celtics to come and extract them.
00:41:30 The stories just keep emerging from this situation.
00:41:33 And it's as amazing and beautiful as it was unexpected.
00:41:37 And it's been one of the most enjoyable parts of the season so far, Jake.
00:41:40 Yeah, I mean, team chemistry is really important.
00:41:43 And I was someone who had watched some of the press conference stuff from Porzingis.
00:41:49 It's like I had kind of an idea that he was this cool, funny dude, but I had no idea that he was going to come in and like, dude, he's legit been like, I don't know.
00:42:01 He's been the last piece of the puzzle, both off the court and like, I don't even, it hurts me to even say it, but like off the court too.
00:42:10 Like, obviously everybody loved Marcus, but there was definitely some tension there a little bit.
00:42:15 And I mean, Jalen in particular, dude, like I've just never seen this guy smile anywhere near as much as he has this year.
00:42:23 And like you watched that podcast with Jalen, it's like, you also get a feel like Jalen likes to keep things close to his chest when he's in front of cameras.
00:42:32 And so like, we don't get a real, which I think Tatum does as well.
00:42:35 And so we don't get a really good idea of what these guys are like, but to get that glimpse of these two hanging out and it's like, they're just, they're a new relationship.
00:42:45 They're in the honeymoon phase.
00:42:47 And then they're just sitting there giggling, hit each other on the shoulder.
00:42:51 It's a true bromance.
00:42:53 That's right.
00:42:54 Yeah.
00:42:55 No, you.
00:42:56 No, you.
00:42:57 I want to tell you.
00:42:58 I got to tell you exactly.
00:43:00 I'll tell the story properly after.
00:43:02 Yeah.
00:43:03 Like a married couple.
00:43:04 Yeah.
00:43:05 So Jalen has assisted Derek White 33 times this season.
00:43:09 Derek's second.
00:43:10 He's assisted KP 48 times, so like 15 times more than anybody else on the roster.
00:43:17 Cookies and cream, dude.
00:43:19 Like, yeah, it's such like a goofy duo.
00:43:22 And I just absolutely love it.
00:43:24 Them living in the same building is just such a bizarre nugget because Boston's a huge city.
00:43:29 And I don't know if he asked JB first, but the fact that he just ended up in the same place and carpool together is just fucking awesome, man.
00:43:38 Late night calls.
00:43:40 Come down, play some Super Smash Brothers with me, play some Mario Kart.
00:43:43 I need to believe that that's happening between them.
00:43:46 As long as there's no late night gardening, they can do whatever they want.
00:43:51 Yeah.
00:43:52 Spoonie, what do you got?
00:43:54 Oh, I've got.
00:43:56 I think so many beat us in overtime early in the season, kind of like maybe the worst loss of the year from a process standpoint, especially that overtime period.
00:44:06 It was like all the things we hate about the Celtics with like the late game isos and things like that.
00:44:14 So many comes back to Boston.
00:44:16 It's another overtime game.
00:44:18 And the C's actually, I think they were down seven with a couple minutes left.
00:44:22 Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, drag the Celtics to overtime and then basically dominate the overtime period.
00:44:29 Tatum has 45.
00:44:31 Jalen has 35.
00:44:33 Dominant performance against like that mini team was flying at that time, too.
00:44:37 They've since kind of cooled off a little bit, but people were talking about them like, are they the best team in the NBA?
00:44:42 And, you know, the only like mark on that is many was coming off a back to back.
00:44:47 But I don't think KP didn't play on the flip side.
00:44:50 So so I cancel those two out.
00:44:52 Just a great win.
00:44:54 Super fun game to watch, too.
00:44:56 Like when they're coming back and then dominating overtime, the garden was absolutely electric game of the season so far.
00:45:02 In my opinion, we've got to click with around the.
00:45:05 Oh, no.
00:45:08 Oh, no.
00:45:10 See him.
00:45:17 Tatum takes it.
00:45:19 Oh, big rebound by right.
00:45:27 Gets in the hands of Tatum down one pushes off.
00:45:31 Passes to Holford corner.
00:45:34 Yeah.
00:45:38 The best.
00:45:43 Oh, very.
00:45:47 Oh, yeah.
00:45:50 The best.
00:45:51 He gets to.
00:46:01 Self-described a steal.
00:46:04 How they take him.
00:46:06 Takes his time.
00:46:07 Knocks it down.
00:46:09 And the main one of that shot and the garden going completely not fucking bonkers.
00:46:14 That makes me it brings me so much joy.
00:46:17 That's that's a great one.
00:46:18 That might be and let us folks in the chat.
00:46:20 Let us know what you think.
00:46:21 Like, I think to me, that's that's the moment of the season so far.
00:46:24 Certainly the best game of the season and just the Celtics firing on on all cylinders without their Latvia and Moses and just killing.
00:46:31 Well, at the time, like you said, Spoonie was one of the best teams in the league.
00:46:35 Oh, man.
00:46:36 Big plays in that one.
00:46:37 Like the true holiday corner three like men.
00:46:40 Like you forget like some of the plays you have to make to get back in the game and Tatum hitting that sidestep three down five to bring it back to within two or whatever it was like and then he hits the three.
00:46:52 He's bouncing on his toes.
00:46:53 He just knows that it's in dagger and the gardens and the Gorman's just in his bag in a game like that.
00:46:58 Dude, he's just it's just the names of the players for to make it got it.
00:47:04 It's just like oh and then the other end like Nikhil Alexander Walker.
00:47:08 Big shot and he's just he lets the game.
00:47:12 He lets the garden take over and if people don't fucking understand why he's the goat, then you don't know ball and I just I'm going to miss him did absolutely.
00:47:22 Now, Jalen Brown is in the dunk contest coming up this weekend.
00:47:26 And one of the reasons is because the fan of the fan the league is desperate to keep fans engaged by having a relevant player actually included in the dunk contest.
00:47:34 The other reason is that Jalen Brown has had some incredible posterizations this season.
00:48:01 I mean, is this the best Jalen dunking season of his career so far?
00:48:05 Spoonie?
00:48:06 Yeah, I think so.
00:48:07 I don't know.
00:48:08 Yeah, it's gotta be right just because like how many posters you can remember a few posters he's had throughout his career, but like he's slowed down recently.
00:48:18 But like that first half of the season that he was dunking on somebody's head every single game and like the primal roars.
00:48:26 He lets out like I start roaring in my basement and realize how pathetic it is.
00:48:31 But like I just get so into it.
00:48:33 And he's the energy shifter.
00:48:36 Yeah, dude.
00:48:37 Oh, yeah, that's what it sounds like in your mind.
00:48:41 But in reality, it's like the three cool white boys screaming into the abyss.
00:48:47 That's right.
00:48:48 Channeling our inner Jalen Brown.
00:48:49 It feels good.
00:48:50 Who's next?
00:48:53 I've lost count.
00:48:54 Who's next?
00:48:57 I'll let you go.
00:48:58 You guys take over.
00:49:00 I'll just react from here.
00:49:01 All right.
00:49:02 I've got another one.
00:49:03 Go for it.
00:49:04 No, no, go ahead, Ben.
00:49:05 Go ahead.
00:49:06 All right.
